Dunno about Konqueror, but it looks fine to me in mozilla-1.3b. I'm

Yea, that's half my own stupidity half apache/web browser stupidity. I
foolishly changed the name of the file when i updated it from a *.html to

what the file is based on its extension rather than its content.

If you go to Video- Quicktime, it works fine. (i think).

Sorry, I am unable to validate this document because its content type is text/plain, which is not currently supported by this service.

So I'd say Apache is telling the browser that the page is plain text. If a browser renders it as HTML, that would be wrong. And, yes, Internet Explorer renders it as HTML...

apache is telling the browser that it's text. It determines this be extension.
I used to have it configured to use 'magic numbers' (think of the 'file'

I'm no expert on this, but perhaps your environment is wonky? Run
./configure --help and see if there is an option to set mcpu when
running configure, like --cpu. Also, if you echo each of those env-vars
(CPPFLAGS, CXXFLAGS, and CFLAGS) do they show what you expect them to
 show?

No problem with env. However, I compiled without the C*FLAGS, and it ran.

XINE won't work, though. I get:

xine: error while loading shared libraries:
/usr/local/lib/xine/plugins/xineplug_inp_dvdnav.so: undefined symbol:
dvdnav_menu_language_select

In setup, language is set to en. I don't get the unable to play

This didn't leave me feeling very good about Video playong on Linux... I
must say, your observation of minimum HW is accurate. I have had quite a

hit on could be whether it helps to have the HW Decoder and how to use it,
if any way exists. I believe all the libdvdcss stuff takes the place of
the decoder card, but of course at a large cost. OTOH, I had DVD's
playing well on my ThinkPad 770Z, back when I actually HAD a decent
laptop. I believe it had the decoder built-in, so it ran fine on a 366.
Of course, That was before I used Linux like I do, and before the Xine and
mplayer projects were quite so good... and before your succinct SxS.

I'm getting problems with this. First, the SxS says to install xine-dvdnav
before xine-lib. However, on ./configure, I get:

checking for xine-config... no
checking for XINE-LIB version = 0.9.10... no
*** The xine-config script installed by XINE could not be found
*** If XINE was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the XINE_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to xine-config.
configure: error: *** You should install xine first ***

So, OK - try xine-lib first, then. Configures alright, but make chokes
with:

cc1: bad value (athlon) for -mcpu= switch
make[3]: *** [utils.lo] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory
`/home/edj/downloads/dvdstuff/xine-lib-0.9.12/src/xine-utils'

make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/edj/downloads/dvdstuff/xine-lib-0.9.12'
make: *** [all-recursive-am] Error 2

I have an Athlon 1G, and CPPFLAGS, CXXFLAGS and CFLAGS are set to:
-O3 -march=i686 -mcpu=i686. The Makefile has:

DEBUG_CFLAGS = -O3 -march=i686 -mcpu=i686 -g -DDEBUG -Wall -D_REENTRANT
-D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -DXINE_COMPILE -O3 -mcpu=athlon

I'm nowhere near familiar enough with all this stuff to know - how do I fix
the athlon bad value error in make?? Any advice appreciated. Thanks a
lot.

This is a great step and many thanks to Doug.

Some minor nits to pick:

Blackdown Java link is broken, thewre's a file in
http://hunley.homeip.net/linux_sources/mozilla/ called
j2re-1.3.1-02b-FCS-linux-i386.bin, is that what is needed? FWIW, I grabbed the tarball
from balckdown proper.

RealPlayer link is broken, it links to
http://hunley.homeip.net/linux/sources/mozilla/rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin and it
probly should be
http://hunley.homeip.net/linux_sources/mozilla/rp8_linux20_libc6_i386_cs2.bin

Step 5 referes to * cd xpinstaller/packager, that should be xpinstall/packager.
Additionally, when I create the link as shown, ln -s /opt/mozilla/mozilla
/usr/bin/mozilla, then try to run /usr/bin/mozilla, I get an error:
Cannot find runtime directory. Exiting.
Running /opt/mozilla/mozilla works (I get an error that freetype support is not
compiled in, but I don't know how inportant that is).

Step 9 says to tar -xvzf linux-ar-405.tar.gz, but we were told to download
linux-505.tar.gz.

Other than that it seems to have worked beautifully.

Regards,
Tim
