building Mozilla from source
Greetings, I've seen a few random comments here & there (off this list) about people getting very significant performance improvements when they rebuilt Mozilla from source (even compared to the i686 binary tarball). Truth be told, i attempted to rebuild a Mozilla-0.9.8 SRPM earlier this week, and it bombed out after chugging for nearly 40 minutes. So, that said, who has already done this successfully, and did you see a noticable performance improvement? Another Microsoft marketing success
>From the BBC online. Friday, 8 February, 2002, 12:35 Here is the last part of a story covering a speech by Mr. Mbeki to the S.A. parliament this week: "He also announced a pledge by the US software giant Microsoft to provide software to all of South Africa's 32,000 public schools." You can read the entire story if you like, but that paragraph was the only reference to MS. http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/africa/newsid_1808000/1808986.stm This looks to be a beautiful marketing move. It's a shame there is no organization that could supply linux. I suppose S.A. will get grants from Western countries to buy the hardware to run the free MS software. So, Western governments will help pay to extend MS's monoply. Very nice touch. Anybody who doubts the intelligence of the MS organization should reflect on the genius of this "gift." It is my observation that very few people, having used windows for a while, will willingly switch to linux. Therefore, it looks like linux just lost the African computer market. As I recall, MS took over the office productivity market by giving people cheap versions of word and excel. (MS works). After that, they had to use Work and Excel at work. I suppose they'll do the same here. Joel ___ Linux-users mailing list - http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users Subscribe/Unsubscribe info, Archives, and Digests are located at the above URL.

I have had no luck in getting the workstation 3.1.1 ISO's that so many have been getting. I keep getting turned away because the iso server is full up with users logged on... However, on one of the mirrors I found the WS311 rpms and srpms and grabbed those. The ones I actually used to upgrade my ws31, were the 3.1.1 RPMS. After carefully removing the ones I didn't want... I simply issuded: rpm -Uvh --replacefiles --replacepkgs --force and after a bit of wait for the packages to install... I eventually got my console back and did a: shutdown -r now When the macine came back up... I had WorkStation 3.1.1 running. :') The packages I didn't upgrade were the kernel and xfree.. I already had updated stuff running, no sense in overwritting my hard work. I had to go around and do a little clean up. My custom compiled copy of samba 2.2.2 was in a different location than WS311, all I had to do was move smb.conf to the caldera location and restart smbd. One other note... the ws311 provided acpi daemon fails to work correctly on the compaqs I host. Over-writing the caldera copy with the one from acpid-20010510 fixed it. Shutdown with either -r or -h now works as expected. All in all, fairly painless. unsupported upgrade of Workstation 3.1 to 3.1.1. After observing the behavior with top, it appears that the "pagination" is occurring back at the ghostscript level. Any idea how to alter this behavior? As with so many things in life, I find myself between the extremes in this discussion. I certainly wouldn't want to try cli browsing and/or email manipulations (there are advocates even for this), but I've never gotten to like the concept of drag and drop overly much, even on Windoze. For the great army of potential linux users out there (the unwashed, so to speak), however, a standard offering of gui elements to make them comfortable in the wilderness of new unix facilities (which they may never want to comprehend) is esential. -- Collins Richey - Denver Area WWTLRD? - ELX rc1 with xfce and sylpheed ___ Linux-users mailing list - http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users Subscribe/Unsubscribe info, Archives, and Digests are located at the above URL.

Re: MySQL front ends, was: Re: no printing from kmail
By "Front End" do you mean something like Access has for it's own databases? With most SQL RDBMS's you will find that the best front end for them is a GUI tool which allows you to send SQL commands in a simple way. For this, I like KMySQL. Other than that, you aren't going to find any "Access"-like front ends for real database servers. Even Access won't allow you to create databases and tables on MSSQL servers. You still have to use the tools for the DBMS, some of which are better than others. begin "David A. Re: Fwd: SuSE noshow at LWCE NY 2002
Yeah, sure. So I can have users "losing" entire directories. I will never forget the time I was called frantically to restore accounting information to someone's server because it was "missing". It being on NetWare I attempted a Salvage, but couldn't find anything to salvage. Well Chief, to make a long story short, someone had dragged the directory into one of the surrounding subdirectories. While Konqueror would have asked "Move, Copy, Link", Exploder didn't think to and simply moved it.
