RE: Disk Activity

2002-02-09 Thread zohar

Dep,

Please try not to answer by .dat files as it is not opening, may be
opening in linux but I do not have external modem so for internet and
applications I have to maintain W2K

I had also experienced the same problem of elongated disk activity in
the past but at that time I was not on this list and formatting solved
it but reading that question today the thing became afresh in my mind.

If you could make attachment in a .txt format or other way many will be
happy to know your answers.

I would be a matter of looking at each cd under kernel. However at this site
http://ranger.dnsalias.com/mandrake/mandrake8.1/kernel/

You can download the latest mandrake version of kernel 2.4.17 full source
file or the rpm version.

RE: HELP!! (fixed - not solved)

OK this is what I did.

Booted up into single user mode
Reset the passwords for the users
Rebooted in the previously broken system
Logged in as if nothing had happened.

So I have cured the symptom but still don't have any clue as to what
the cause was. I'll check my /var/log for any hints that I was
broken into. This is a good time for me to review my security.

Thanks Llama for pointing me in the right direction. And thanks

Yes, but if you can get to the point where you can edit that file, then

OK, then you need to determine what got broken. Passwords don't just
change themselves. Either you tinkered with something you shouldn't
have, or your box got compromised.

> How can I alter my boot up squence so that I boot up into single user

Well, if you're running GRUB, then you'll prolly need to edit the boot=
line so that it says something like 'linux single'. If you're using
LILO, then simply type 'linux single' at the LILO prompt.

> Once I do, I would then use the COAS tools to re-enter the passwords?

Errr...no. Now is not the time to be going to a GUI to solve your
problems. You're going to need to get really familiar with the command line.

Yes, i was one of several that built & installed XFree86-4.2.0. I was
also the one that had the very odd problem where gdm refused to start
going into runlevel 5. This was in a RedHat based system, not Caldera,
BTW. I haven't yet gotten around to upgrading my Caldera box to 4.2.0
(i did build 4.1.0 on it several months back, and that went swimmingly).
The actual build of 4.2.0 was quite easy though, i just followed the
SxS.

Truth be told, i haven't seen any real performance or feature benefit
going from 4.1.0 to 4.2.0 on that 1 box. I will note that i did see a
significant improvement going from 3.3.6 to 4.1.0 on my Caldera box and
my redhat box.

building Mozilla from source

2002-02-09 Thread Net Llama

Greetings,
I've seen a few random comments here & there (off this list) about
people getting very significant performance improvements when they
rebuilt Mozilla from source (even compared to the i686 binary tarball).
Truth be told, i attempted to rebuild a Mozilla-0.9.8 SRPM earlier this
week, and it bombed out after chugging for nearly 40 minutes.
So, that said, who has already done this successfully, and did you see a
noticable performance improvement? If so, what did your configure line
look like (Mozilla seems to have something like 200 options)?

thanks,
Lonni

You could try editing your password files.
Look at /etc/shadow.
For example:

aph5::11476:0:-1:7:-1:-1:134535844

user aph5 has no password and you can log on with just the user name.

Another Microsoft marketing success

2002-02-09 Thread Joel Hammer

>From the BBC online.
Friday, 8 February, 2002, 12:35
Here is the last part of a story covering a speech by Mr. Mbeki to the S.A.
parliament this week:
"He also announced a pledge by the US software giant Microsoft to provide
software to all of South Africa's 32,000 public schools."

You can read the entire story if you like, but that paragraph was the only
reference to MS.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/africa/newsid_1808000/1808986.stm

This looks to be a beautiful marketing move. It's a shame there is no
organization that could supply linux. I suppose S.A. will get grants
from Western countries to buy the hardware to run the free MS software. So,
Western governments will help pay to extend MS's monoply. Very nice touch.
Anybody who doubts the intelligence of the MS organization should reflect on
the genius of this "gift."

It is my observation that very few people, having used windows for a
while, will willingly switch to linux. Therefore, it looks like linux just
lost the African computer market. As I recall, MS took over the office
productivity market by giving people cheap versions of word and excel.
(MS works). After that, they had to use Work and Excel at work. I suppose
they'll do the same here.

Kernel sources question (Mandrake 8.1)

2002-02-09 Thread Jean Sagi

Does anyone know where to get the kernel sources on the Mandrake 8.1 cd's?

I used the software manager to find and install them but i cannot find them.
I don´t know if it's some package i have to install, or they just dont
come in any
of the three cd's.

I read the kernel-howto, but I just says to get linux-x.y.z files from
some urls
and it follows with the process of recompiling the kernel...

I need them, not to recompile a new kernel. Just need source file
(headers maybe)
to compile the modules for install a PC-TEL winmodem my uncle has.
I´m following the steps of Jan Stifter I found on Llama's SxS for 2.4
kernels and it states
that you have to run ./configure with two parameters:

--with-hal=pct789(Uncle's modem chipset )

--with-kernel-includes=/path/to/my/kernel-sources/include
If you don't have your kernel sources at /usr/src/linux, specifiy
your includes...

That's it idon´t have them!!

Any help would be very appreciated.

Re: Printing question

2002-02-09 Thread Joel Hammer

Does the print file generation take a long time on the linux server or is
the slowness in the transfer to the printer?
You could just change lp=/tmp/outfile and time the output.
You would first have to touch /tmp/outfile and run checkpc -f.

XMMS for AVIS

2002-02-09 Thread Brett I. Holcomb

I have XMMS setup to show AVIs if I select them but I can't make it use
XMMS if I left click on an avi file. I've added XMMS to the file
associtions/general tab as the preferred app. On the embedding app tab I
try to add XMMS but it doesn't show up in the list when I click ADD. I
also tried setting the video group left click action to "show in separate
"view but then when I click on an AVI file the xmms icon is shown but then
I get a dialog for edit file typ showing the embedded viewer tab and I
still can't add XMS.

What am I missing here. I just want to open the file in XMMS when I click
on it.

Another upgrade path from ws31 to ws311...

2002-02-09 Thread Jerry McBride

I have had no luck in getting the workstation 3.1.1 ISO's that so many
have been getting. I keep getting turned away because the iso server is
full up with users logged on...

However, on one of the mirrors I found the WS311 rpms and srpms and
grabbed those. The ones I actually used to upgrade my ws31, were the 3.1.1
RPMS. After carefully removing the ones I didn't want... I simply issuded:
rpm -Uvh --replacefiles --replacepkgs --force and after a bit of wait for
the packages to install... I eventually got my console back and did a:
shutdown -r now

When the macine came back up... I had WorkStation 3.1.1 running. :')

The packages I didn't upgrade were the kernel and xfree.. I already had
updated stuff running, no sense in overwritting my hard work. I had to go
around and do a little clean up. My custom compiled copy of samba 2.2.2
was in a different location than WS311, all I had to do was move smb.conf
to the caldera location and restart smbd.

One other note... the ws311 provided acpi daemon fails to work correctly
on the compaqs I host. Over-writing the caldera copy with the one from
acpid-20010510 fixed it. Shutdown with either -r or -h now works as
expected.

All in all, fairly painless. unsupported upgrade of Workstation 3.1 to
3.1.1.

Cheers.

After checking out countless sites looking for information on setting up
Mysql, I came upon:

http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/PHP/SoothinglySeemless

This site does not offer a simple front end per say but does offer a
step-by-step tutorial on setting up an integrated Apache-PHP-MYSQL sever.
This could be an overkill for what you need, but its worth looking over.

Found this is a google search for kmysql.

KSql, previously known as KMySql is a KDE database client.
It was originaly mySQL specific, but uses now plugins to
access databases like miniSQL and PostgreSQL.

The problem was not the library, I have LD_LIB set.,
it is the older stl headers being called before the STLport

very good at all. Their build files have everything in them
whether they are used or not. Making simple make file is

As with so many things in life, I find myself between the extremes in
this discussion. I certainly wouldn't want to try cli browsing and/or
email manipulations (there are advocates even for this), but I've never
gotten to like the concept of drag and drop overly much, even on
Windoze. For the great army of potential linux users out there (the
unwashed, so to speak), however, a standard offering of gui elements to
make them comfortable in the wilderness of new unix facilities (which
they may never want to comprehend) is esential.

I'm floundering with databases, so 'yes', that type of thing would be what

Although I think I understood your explanation, I don't follow why it would
be so difficult to have a front end (so to speak) for a mysql dbase server.
What's so difficult about creating (say) a simple name and address book dbase
using a 'standard' tool? It's the 'standard tool' I can't find, apart from
Knoda/Rekall. I can follow along ok if I had to program it myself using (say)

By "Front End" do you mean something like Access has for it's own databases? With
most SQL RDBMS's you will find that the best front end for them is a GUI tool which
allows you to send SQL commands in a simple way. For this, I like KMySQL. Other than
that, you aren't going to find any "Access"-like front ends for real database servers.
Even Access won't allow you to create databases and tables on MSSQL servers. You
still have to use the tools for the DBMS, some of which are better than others.

Yeah, sure. So I can have users "losing" entire directories. I will never forget the
time I was called frantically to restore accounting information to someone's server
because it was "missing". It being on NetWare I attempted a Salvage, but couldn't
find anything to salvage. Well Chief, to make a long story short, someone had dragged
the directory into one of the surrounding subdirectories. While Konqueror would have
asked "Move, Copy, Link", Exploder didn't think to and simply moved it. DOH!
