I know Dream weaver may be a little more standard but mBED is a lot easier and faster. It builds multimedia and gui's by adding any scripting, java,C/C++, ActiveX,applets, and any thing else with the kitchen sink that you can imagine, svg, xml, servlets, browsers, and anything on your server's harddrive by putting in the source address (c:\). I've requested that since there business agendas are changing, why not let mBED become open source. Looks like it's on it's way someday. (won't hold my breath). Nice part about it is rebol.r can be called from mBED and it will work every time, with or without a stand alone user interface that can run on any computer and browser(java support needed). The mBed language is even a lot easier than rebol written in natural language. background=grey width=300 height=250 noicons=true etc... it's streams to the browser and its all ran through C++ or java engine. So i dont really need rebol\view but i think its got its place in the hackers hall of fame.

With the Scala MM200, they were able to use DirectX which probably made things a bit easier for smooth multimedia effects. On the Amiga, they pushed it to the max, to be able to get the effects they did. An Amiga 1200 with an accelerator can perform quite favourably with my 133Mhz Pentium PC. What I'm saying is that their is a lot of work involved :) So to have smooth Scala like wipes, they would probably have to employ a number of people to just work on the graphics subsystem, especially to get it to work on more than a couple of platforms. Or just get everyone to buy fast machines. -- Julian Kinraid ... [EMAIL PROTECTED] ... ICQ:17257217

[REBOL] [REBOL]Controlling security from script Re:(3)
I've been pondering security issues lately, motivated by an interest in having a web- (or other net-) server which contains a library of scripts or functions which could be run at will (or automatically synchronized frequently) on a net-connected box. It's really tedious keeping N+1 boxes synchronized by hand! However, that increases the number of potential attacks on the client box. Hence the paranoid mutterings below. -jn- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > > This is dangerous if you're running scripts that other people gave > you. > > Good point. One idea would be to use a different extension for "safe > scripts", like .RS > > One extension is as good as another to REBOL. > Hmmm... That just displaces (and enlarges) the security problem. To make the point, let me oversimplify and ignore the differences between file and net security (and levels, etc.) and focus on WHEN the security decision is made, in broad brush terms. In practical terms we currently have these kinds of options: 1) Naive mode: Always run unsecured (via -s or {secure none} in user.r) 2) Cautious mode: Insecure intervals at a loose timescale (disable security, do a bunch of stuff, then turn security back on) 3) Nervous mode: Lower security just enough to run a trusted script, then immediately crank it back up. 4) Raving paranoid mode: Always leave security at the highest setting, leave the modem off, unplug the network cable, and don't even boot the box. With the .RS option, I could mount an attack on your system using new techniques to bypass your choice of 1-4 above: a) Social engineering, part 1: Try to get you to run a script (send it via email, ask you to 'do my web-page, etc.) and hope you don't notice the name %email-threat-to-white-house-and-erase-hard-drive.rs b) Social engineering, part 2: Send you a useful (SAFE!) script with an *.rs name. You can look it over carefully and test it (change its name to *.r and explicitly monitor all dangerous actions, etc.) until you trust it enough to leave it enabled with *.rs all the time. Then I send you an "upgrade", with an *.rs name, that has a Trojan horse (possibly implemented via self-modifying code after a certain number of executions or elapsed time) and hope that the new version inherits the trust you placed in the older copy. c) Catch-you-not-looking attack: Get at your box long enough to change a script's name from %foo.r to %foo.rs (there's a bit more, but you get the idea). Just thinking in paranoid mode here... ;-) I'm wondering if we could come up with new security techniques that would be viable alternatives to the sandbox or the signature methods. Old joke: "I'm from the government. I'm here to help you." New joke: "I'm from microsoft. I'm safe to execute on your box."

[REBOL] Find Function Re:
Hi, Paul, Several other folks have given good, comprehensive explanations. I might add a simple trick; read any [...] as if it were a synonym for first_established_value_in [...] where "established" means something other than none or false. It's saying "try these in this order, and quit as soon as you find one" (in a loose sort of way). REBOL allows you to make puns in logic-oriented expressions; none is considered to be false, and everything else (other than false and its synonyms no and off) is considered to be true. As a consequence, foo: any [ gorp bletch quux flarp "default"] can be used as short-hand for the imperative code either found? gorp and gorp [ foo: gorp ][ either found? bletch and bletch [ foo: bletch][ either found? quux and quux [ foo: quux ][ either found? flarp and flarp [ foo: flarp ][ foo: "default" ] ] ] ] For example, if I have a Great Big Hairy Database of contact and address data (and some suitable function definitions ;-), I could write your-address: any [ your-home-address your-work-address your-parents-address general-delivery-to-your-home-town "no address on file" ] -jn-

[REBOL] one file user guide ? Re:(2)
As a workaround, you could generate a single doc complete with TOC using the freeware program HTMLdoc -- see http://www.easysw.com/index.html It will generate either a single structured html file or a ps or pdf for printing. It works very well in my experience. __ Reply Separator _ Subject: [REBOL] one file user guide ? [REBOL] [REBOL]Controlling security from script Re:(2)
Thanks Tim and Ted: I currently program in C++ on NT and am familiar with the procedure outlined. I don appreciate the tips however. This procedure will be good enough for testing on my desktop pc until I get my feet a little wetter with rebol. Maybe I jumped the gun before testing FTP and CGI features, but this is what I eventually want to be able to do: 1)Automatically (without user input) update a file via ftp. From my PC at home. Haven't done this before, I think rebol is the media for this. 2)Read/write files on web server via CGI. I do this all the time using executables compiled in C, but I think that rebol may be a better media in may cases. Hi, Sorry if this is a FAQ here, but it's not in the FAQ at www.rebol.com. Is there a version of the user guide that is downloadable (and printable) in ONE file ? Ah, so the static content, right? I thought so. In such case - is /Media still planned? Jim, also - if you want to step into embedded market, you need cool stuff like transparent windows, fading effects etc. Give us such primitives and we will build Scala like wipes combining them, right, Steve Shireman? :-) If you will not provide such or similar functionality, you will not succeed in embedde market imho ... ;-) -pekr- > > > I'm at the point of just writing demo's now to try and push the envelope a > bit and see if there are any gotchas. I think some are private responses from SELMA to individuals (like the welcome when subscribing). } Yes, the 80,000 does include all the bounced messages that come back to SELMA. Mailbox full, et cetera. That's why the message numbers in the archive skip numbers. Some good refinements would be a GET that only retrieved outgoing messages, and/or a similar feature for the archive script. On 1/27/2000 at 4:03 AM [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: { I'm still not sure I get it, if you don't have it already, how do you know which one(s) you want? If you read it in the archives, why do you need to request it? } The original context was that bobr said in 81447: { Finally, some of the questions will have been answered before. It is fine refer me/readers to a particular message already on the list that has both question and answer using the {X-SELMA: [REBOL] dd} number. } And I was just mentioning (in 88440) why that was useful, and that you can also retrieve the HTML version of archived messages using the message number. So it's a handy way to refer to an old message (e.g. FAQ), or six, without reposting. e.g. See http://www.rebol.org/userlist/archive/81/447.html See http://www.rebol.org/userlist/archive/88/440.html -Ted.
