[WSG] Using em's as unit measure
Hi I have a div element with just a few words of text directly in the div, I have applied padding using em's but when I view this in IE and Firefox IE seems to make the element larger than it appears in Firefox. If I put an equal amount of padding all round the div element in Firefox this places the text to be aligned in the centre of the div, while in IE the text seems lower down and the div appears a lot larger. Can anybody shed some light on this? 'Morgen, My hardline semantics reply would be... Math (a2), square units (km2), Should be MathML? chemistry formulas (Na2CO3) ... ChemML? I exactly know your reason for putting it this way, but (and the same goes for modularity) it does not serve the common needs (read: a straightforward use without a heavy overhead stuff) of marking up the simple construction used just for a common unit. (I know you use the form of sqm and mph but we have solely m^2 and kmh^-1). I'm not talking scientific stuff, weird formulas or equations. Speaking of which .. the numbers 0-9 should be available in Unicode in both subscript and superscript if I'm not mistaken, so it should cover this basic usage. we're thinking XHTML 2.0 for a second That's what I tried not to do. The reason? When I hear XHTML2 two things pop up in my mind ... W3C and IE, I don't quite know which one is more distant from the ideas of HTML and web at all. Honestly, it gets weary to think in the theoretical field over and over after some time. And you know what I mean, I'd like to see it in real ... once. Or see my kids working with it / using it at some point ;) Theoretically, would you like it more if it were called indexsomething /? Possibly, yes. That was what I thought - the element serves its purpose ... at least to some extent; it's only stupidly called and treated ;) (Take it with a grain of salt, as always.) -- Jan Brasna :: www.alphanumeric.cz | www.janbrasna.com | www.wdnews.net *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] *** This message and its attachments may contain legally privileged or confidential information. Is there a definitive answer? I want the best search engine rankings but I also want clean markup. Background images, not being IMG elements, can't have ALT attributes, so that part's easy. If you've decided that an image is truly decor and doesn't need to be a foreground image, it also doesn't need (and can't have) alt text. Determining which images are decor and which are truly content can be difficult at times as there can be lots of grey area. One could argue that if the image is not necessary to understanding the page content, it's decor. It helps if you turn images off in your browser and see if the integrity of the page suffers as a result. The correct markup will depend on whether you're using HTML or XHTML. For XHTML it's: img src=x alt=xx / Other attributes are available; see: HTML 4.01 Specification 13 Objects, Images, and Applets 13.2 Including an image: the IMG element http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/struct/objects.html#edef-IMG Regards, Paul *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***
Re: [WSG] Image markup clarification
Robin, since you are using background images, I assume that the images are meaningless, and only for decoration reasons. Therefore you do not need alt attributes there. It is true that alt attributes are a little piece of the search engines algorithms, which can boost a bit your rankings, but they are not there for stuffing with keywords. And for the minimal boosting, it is not worth to spoil your clean code. That is a fact! Work on more important on-site and off-site factors for achieving higher rankings. There is no 'tool' for checking accessibility, it's something that has to be done manually, as there are too many requirements that need a common sense interpretation. Email me off list if you want a recommendation, I won't spam the group with it. The RNIB is also likely to be able to make some suggestions. I have done a standard HTML and CSS validation so I can be 100% before advertising the fact in my footer etc. But is there a 1 click Y/N tester for accessibility that works in the same way as the W3 site checker for validity?? No, many aspects of accessibility cannot be programatically tested for. Yes, here's an article with a table of affected screen readers (scroll down to the table) http://alistapart.com/articles/fir/ Joe Clark seems to claim that Jaws does read it. .Matthew Cruickshank http:/docvert.org Convert Word Documents to HTML *** List Guidelines: http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm Unsubscribe: http://webstandardsgroup.org/join/unsubscribe.cfm Help: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ***
