RE: [WSG] web check

2007-02-13 Thread John 'Max' Maxwell
Hi Georg,

Many thanks for your comments - much appreciated.

I will get on to the 'more' links and add the names.

Need some font-resize testing and improvements. Text is overflowing
containers in the good browsers under certain conditions, and IE6'
'auto-expansion' bug is not very kind to that layout either.

I spotted this and need to take the height attribute off some divs or maybe
bring in some kind of auto scroll.

A generous 'min-width' is needed for supporting browsers.

What does this mean? Making the page wider than 850 pixels if the space is
there?? Why would this help?

I don't think you need more than one IE-expression for 'min/max-width'
in that layout - on the outer wrapper, and it definitely needs some
tuning for trigger/fix-points and smoothness of action.

Can you expand on this as I am interested in knowing more about it.

Thanks,

Max.

I like it, your attention to standards with an easy check link on the
page footer. Sorry not much time for a full review too much to do, my
site always needs attention, a great start. A few things to consider
accessibility for bots and page rank as well as well as disability

[WSG] website checker

2007-01-08 Thread John 'Max' Maxwell
Hi All,

Can someone tell me the best way to check my website for 'accessability'?? I
have done a standard HTML and CSS validation so I can be 100% before
advertising the fact in my footer etc. But is there a 1 click Y/N tester for
accessibility that works in the same way as the W3 site checker for
validity??

Thanks,

Re: [WSG] *Pure* CSS drop down menu

2006-10-06 Thread John 'Max' Maxwell

Hi Christian,

I am pretty new to all of this and by no means any kind of expert - so I
am reading this all with interest.

I have often been told that pure CSS is a good idea as javascript is
something that can be turned off - is this true?

I am very much in the camp of pushing envelopes etc - but in the 'page'
- at the end of the day, maybe navigation is the one area where you need
to stick to what works best across all scenarios.

I think the most important phrase for this kind of thing is 'graceful
degradation'. I personally think you should have a menu that looks
exactly as you want it with all bells and whistles - on the perfect
platform say a std FF browser. Then it should be capable of degrading as
each bell and whistle is removed. As part of this process I guess
trade-offs are made and that is the beauty of every client being
different. Where one may leave off a bell to help out a particular group
of users ... another may ask for a bag of whistles and stuff 'em!

So, I am quite clear on what you DON'T like - but what about these great
combination menus with CSS and javascript? Can you point us to some of
your work? I am not really interested in key tab navigation right now -
I'd just like to see:

1. How good these 'super-valid' menus can look.
2. What methods are used to achieve them and how they cope with the
'turning off' idea I have mentioned above.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thanks,

Max.

Re: [WSG] *Pure* CSS drop down menu

2006-10-06 Thread John 'Max' Maxwell

Dear lord Christian,

what was that about? Do you preach to everyone? I was casually agreeing
with your views on usability etc (whilst trying hard not to mention your
attitude towards other posters) ... and you give me a lecture? You even
cut my paragraphs in half to allow you to treat my words out of context
and respond with another lecture ... please do not do that.

There are some good open discussions on here but a few too many people
that like to here themselves preach and some very poor awareness of
common courtesy ... alas another forum ruined by a minority.

I'd like to tell the council that I am not paying for not getting any
service, yet I have to. Every shop owner would like people to not
complain but just come, buy and leave, but that never happens either.
You don't build web sites for yourself, you build them for people to
come to them and either buy stuff or tell you how great you are. If
your attitude is that you decide what people are allowed to talk to
you (or which bells and whistles are good for them), you shouldn't
wonder when not many come. This is normally the step when people start
thinking about search engine optimization, cause surely this is why
nobody hangs around or not many people comt to the site.

 ummm - are you telling me how to run a web design business? Are you
briefing me on how to address a client's needs? If you are - please
don't. Can you people not help being condescending or are you doing it
to annoy me?

Max.

[WSG] Max-width issues

2006-10-03 Thread John 'Max' Maxwell

Good Morning All,

I am having a bit of a problem with the old 'max-width' issue in IE and
would like to know your thoughts on the subject.

If I add this to my style sheet:

#outer_wrapper {
   max-width: 800px; }

Then I am fine in FF but not in IE - in IE the outer container just
keeps stretching with the browser window. So if I add the following,
then all is well in all browsers BUT the code is no longer valid:

* html div#outer_wrapper {width: 800px /* fallback value */;
width:expression(((document.compatMode
document.compatMode=='CSS1Compat') ?
document.documentElement.clientWidth :
document.body.clientWidth)
 1000 ? 800px : (((document.compatMode
document.compatMode=='CSS1Compat') ?
document.documentElement.clientWidth :
document.body.clientWidth)  570 ? 552px : 99.7%));
}

Is my syntax or something incorrect or is there just no way of adding
this fix without going 'invalid'?? Does the above code even belong in a
style sheet as it doesn't look like standard CSS to me. So you know, I
am a designer who is wholly self taught in XHTML/CSS/PHP so there are
huge gaps in my 'education' - I would therefore appreciate careful
handling. Having said that, the 10 years I spent in the military when I
should have been at Art School does mean I am capable of taking it
'straight' - I would just appreciate it if any derisory comments about
my code were followed by a helpful tip of how to put it right ;-)

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Max.

Hi Germ,

i must have the syntax wrong - just tried that and it stopped IE
working in addition to still being invalid CSS.

Was your whole CSS like this:

#outer_wrapper {
 max-width: 800px;
}
* html div#outer_wrapper {width: 800px /* fallback value */;
width:_expression_((document.documentElement.offsetWidth
 820)? "800px": "auto" );
}

I just tried this in my style sheet to no avail.

Cheers,

Max.

Your syntax is correct, and if you've got the values right it'll work

fine in IE6 (and IE5+ win).
Ref: http://www.gunlaug.no/contents/wd_additions_14.html

An IE-expression is by definition: proprietary, non-valid, CSS - you
can't make it valid. Nevertheless; IE-expressions belong in CSS, and
nowhere else.

You can hide it - and other non-valid workarounds for old IE-win - from
the validator by putting them in a separate stylesheet, linked to from
inside a 'conditional comment'.
Ref: http://www.gunlaug.no/contents/wd_1_02_01.html#item2

Georg

Many thanks Georg - I've sorted it - great news!!

If you use non-standard properties, then your CSS can't be
valid.

so there is not a valid way of adding transparency to a layer - is that
right? That seems a shame as it is a good tool I think - does anyone
else use it or is it valid code only in here?

The only other way (in my scenario) is to add a transparent image
'over' the background to line up with the div - but this is a bit of a
'fudge' and seems a shame when there is code to do the job.

Do you know why it isn't valid?

Max.

2006-09-08 Thread John 'Max' Maxwell

Hey,

thanks for these guys - just tweaking and I shall be back - minor emergency:

whilst gleefully clicking away in my creative, fluffy world (having
conveniently forgotten the fact that I was 'watching' Harvey (my 2 year
old) whilst Michelle popped upstairs) I have just discovered that he too
has been creating across our garden wall with a permy marker!! I
have created a monster - worse still ... a designer!! And worse STILL -
one as verbose as me!! no teeny weeny scribblings in the corner for this
chap, its full rolf-harris thing.

anyway - back soon with new improved approach - and hopefully a work
around for the min/max width thang.

cheers,

Max.

Re: [WSG] web check Part II

2006-09-08 Thread John 'Max' Maxwell

Max,

Just a very cursory look on my end, and some hasty notes...
It may be a good idea to view your page in a test browser and validate
the markup.

What is your page about?
Should the document title and the h1 heading read: Tiverton Rugby Club?
View your page in Opera/9.01 and then compare it to Firefox/1.5.0.6.
Do you want the page centered or hugging the left viewport?
Best,
~dL

Hi David,

The page isn't about anything yet - the rugby club content is merely to
pad the structure - I am looking for a cross browser happy layout at
this stage.

as to alignment - I usually go for centred but this layout has a max of
1000px so I guess it'll only 'hug' the left viewport (less the 20px
padding) in browsers (less IE) set to be wider than that. I'll have a play.

right now - just making sure it doesn't go awry in any particular
browser/platform combo.

Hope that makes sense?

Cheers,

Max.

In reference to your uri:

Nice one - Thanks David!! - by the way - its now valid HTML and CSS
though I need to change the way the flash is embedded.

I don't like my content area either ... but that's all cosmetic - no
problem.

Thanks again,

Max.

Fear not - I am close to securing 'Grade 2 Listed' status for my web
sites as an area of outstanding natural beauty ... nothing is to be
touched ... a wheelchair ramp or even the teeniest handrail or elevated
plug socket would just destroy the ambience that is my art

bloody peasants - can you imagine them in the Victoria and Albert
The Monalisa - are you sure - but its just tooo small and then this one
here is huge. Pardon step back?? no, no n - you need to fit a
scroll wheel to the frame dear boy, so EVERYone can enjoy it you see.

sorry.

PS - You're wrong ... I haven't even started the wine yet ... oh dear.

Being a wheelchair user myself, I find your statements to be offensive at a
personal level and misguided at a professional level.

I don't think adding alternate ways of navigating a web site will encroach
on your art. If you feel you can't add the appropriate WCAG modifications to
your site without stifling your creativity, why not add an alternate link to
accessible (artistically ugly) pages?

Hopefully we learned from the Jim Crow laws that we can't segregate an
entire segment of the population and call ourselves a "Democratic Society".

excellent - there's always one - and thank you for identifying
yourself. You clearly exposed me as an individual who actually is
fighting for spiral staircases and disrespects all forms of democracy,
no no - it wasn't a joke - you're quite justified don't worry - I can
only help that my platform provided you with a satisfactory position
from where to correct me.

Misguided? I'll take my chances there - to be honest - going to war in
Iraq with a 50 year old weapon was misguided, but I survived that. But
offensive? If you can honestly tell me that you as an individual were
offended by my humour then I can only wholeheartedly apologise as it is
something I do not take any pleasure in and until tonight had managed
to avoid.

All of my websites these days are valid, clearly constructed and
encourage access by all members of society using all variations of
hardware and software.

Regards.
