That's a cool looking foot-forward design, but I'm not sure I like the front
swingarm.

Why not? I admit that the whole front swing arm thing has confused
me since day one so I'm not sure what's good or bad about it.

But, you'll notice they have a cage driver on it. Booo.

"Tom Swift Rides Again: The Saga of Armer Electric"

Rollin Armer, a designer at the Lawrence Radiation

demonstrates his electric motorcycle made from two
batteries and a rewound starter motor. This is a
favorable article for electric motorcycle technology.

On the Kneeslider.com, the writer is convinced that
Hybrid-electric vehicles as being unnecessary in
different articles.

http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2005/12/20/hybrid-motorcycles-are-not-necessary-part-2/
http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2005/12/18/yamaha-targets-hybrid-motorcycle-by-decade-end/

I can see some of his points, because lighter is
better. Why build a big machine like the Gen-Ryu with
the sole goal of being a hybrid when a lighter machine
and good engine can get the same mileage? My bias is
toward electric vehicles and I think he is missing the
broader point that electric motorcycles are limited in
range and to overcome that limitation a hybrid engine
is an option.

Now granted hydrogen fuel cells are the new thing and
could alleviate the range problem, but I dont see that
infrastructure gonna happen here in the states within
the next 10-20 years. If we were talking methanol
fuel cells I can see it being used quickly since
methanol can be manufactured from a variety of sources
(coal, biomass, natural gas, wood waste, trash, etc.),
but methanol has the stigma of another form of
gasoline, the MOFC fuel cells release CO2, and there
are health problems from contamination of improperly
stored methanol. No easy answers, but there never are
when talking alternate fuels.

Yeah, this stinks of BS.

"not recharging ever" means:

1) Perpetual Motion / Over Unity : Bunk.
2) Fusion reactor. Not quite Back to the Future
3) Fuel Cell: Most plausible, but would need fuel, probably hydrogen.
This wouldn't really be a "battery".

As far as the explosion goes ... um ... huh? It'd be difficult to store
that much energy in that small of a space with a purely chemical reaction.

Lithium will react violently with water. On lithium
batteries when the cells are pierced, they react
causing a chain reaction and runaway heat. If this
reaction is in a confined space it will explode.
Valence had a cool video confirming this, but the link
is inactive.

The pics loaded fine for me. The electric source was definitely a fuel cell

am not aware of any phosphorus batteries, but water and the right version of

Took me awhile to find this again after I first saw it
on the show.

The ENV on the NBC's Today show June 30, 2005
http://video.msn.com/v/us/v.htm?g=bb54f3a7-5b7f-44e2-94a5-ea4f4491e265&f=copy

here is a brief transcript:

AL Roaker: We're talking so far this year everyone is
talking about hybrid vehicles. There expect about
200,000 and 260,000 next year. What we have here are 2
special bicycles and andy engleston is the E.N.V.
project director of Intelligent Energy. Good Morning.

Andy: Good morning nice to meet you too.

AL: These 2 bikes are called the ENVY. WHat is the
ENV?

Andy ENgleton: Well, the ENV stand for Emission
Neutral Vehicle. This is a hydrogen powered bike. It's
a hybridized bike. Partly powered by a fuel cell and
partly by battery.

Lady1: This is interesting because many ppl think that
about hydrogen power- "Is it safe?"

Andy: yes, it is safe.

Lady1: It is safe? Where is the hydrogen actually
stored?

Andy: The Hydrogen is stored in this chassis here in a
pressurized cylinder.

Lady1: Oh, inside this area here. Okay, alright.

AL: Compared to a regular motorbike of this size, how
powerful is it?

Andy: It's about 9hp, but the bike is very light and
powered by an electric motor.

Lady2: The question of course that I want to know is
"If I was to ride one of these, where do you refuel?"
You say it can go 50 mph and go 100 miles, but where
do you refuel one of these?

Andy: It needs to be refueled every 100 miles on 5
ounces of hydrogen. But, you go to a hydrogen
refueling station.

AL: I dont know where any of those are around or not.

Andy: There are not. There are 29 in California.
Though there will be 200 in 2 years time.

Lady1: What is your vision for this?

Andy: We have a reforming technology so you should be
able to produce hydrogen at home.

Lady1: Oh.

Andy: And fuel the bike with that. Using biofuel.

AL: If you get into any kind of accident can the
hydrogen get out? And if it does, can it be a problem?

Andy: No, these all have their safety certificates and
so on. So there is no danger from that.

Lady2: When will they be able to be available on the
market? ANd how much?

Andy: They will be available as early as December
2006. It will be somewhere between 6-8 thousand
dollars.

Lady1: Its a nice to know that ppl are looking
seriously at alternative forms of fuel because
obviously that is a problem.

Lady2: Yes, I want to buy one.

AL: I got a couple of guys in helmets [over there].

Lady1: Thank you for coming out.

Andy: Yeah, we're gonna start them up now.

Lady2: We are gonna get out of the way. Andy, thanks
so much.

AL: Now the interesting thing is you dont really hear
anything

Andy: Right. There is little sound and the only
emmission is water vapor.

Lady1: Wow. That's fantastic. So it is better for the
environment.

AL: Look I cant even hear them. Dont hit anybody.

Lady2: Thanks, Andy.

I studied it two years and had a german buddy in college in Florida. We both
had 69 Mustangs and would spend the weekend wrenching on them. I helped him
restore his BSA (don't remember which one, but a 250 single jug). We would
also buzz around on his dad's Bimmer with me riding passenger. Great fun!

His mom would cook these big german dinners on Sunday night and after the
wine took effect, the conversations became bi-lingual. But, that was long
ago and now I depend on Babelfish and Deutsche-Welle for "accurate"
translations.

I would call myself literate on a 2nd grade level. ;)

It did wreck. That is discussed in the pdf that the photos are drawn from. I
am not sure if the frame is homebrew or not, but it looks they used GS500
wheels on it. Katana wheels have dual front rotors. The front fork tubes
could be GSX-R or others and the rear shock is definitely race quality. The
front tire is very thin compared to a stock GS tire. Probably low rolling
resistance and definitely slick.

This bike seems to be a school team project. The "HTL" on the shirts is the
initial for the school. The "L" standing for "technical achievement center."
They are from Austria for sure. The article goes on to discuss the wreck and

Ann Harbor News
Electric motorcycle leaves price hikes in the dust
Saturday, August 27, 2005
Editor's note: This week, we take a daily look at how
people in this area are coping with high gas prices.

Unlike most motorists these days, Terry Richards feels
pretty good when he drives by a gas station, no matter
how high the price per gallon.

"I just kind of thumb my nose at them, and it feels
good,'' said Richards, 47, admitting it's easier when
you're not feeling the pinch of recent sharp price
increases.

The reason? Richards, a test specialist at Chrysler
Corp. Proving Grounds in Sylvan Township, rides a
21-year-old racing motorcycle he converted into a
fully electric-powered vehicle for about $2,000.

"I study a lot of material about alternative energy
sources, and I had a pretty good idea (the price hike)
was going to come, and fast,'' said Richards, a driver
mechanic by trade and environmentalist at heart.

The 1984 Yamaha RZ350 racing bike was never known for
gas mileage, he said, but now runs on 48 volts of
electricity stored in four batteries. Richards
calculates spending 4 cents per mile to operate it and
averages about $15 worth of electricity per week if he
drives it every day.

The motorcycle cruises at 40-45 mph and can reach a
top speed of 60 mph, he said.

The batteries collectively take about fours to fully
charge and provide enough juice to average about 16
miles per use. Not too far, but far enough to make his
13-mile daily commute to work, where he has permission
to plug in to an electrical outlet. He also regularly
rides in to downtown Dexter, where he says people
marvel at the quiet engine.

"I've had joggers jump out right in front of me
because they just don't hear it,'' he said, likening
the soft hum to a household blender.

Richards admits he and his wife, Rosemary, still do
the majority of their driving with their two sedans.
But these days, even skipping one or two commutes or
deciding to stay home can add up to significant
savings over a month's time.

"I wanted to get off gasoline as early as possible,
and I'm glad I did,'' he said. "But it's just a
start.''

Richards' latest project is constructing a hybrid
bio-diesel car, which he hopes to have done within a
few years.

"Here's a video of the 1st of 3 heats for the Midbikes

dirtbikes/motards into this class and the dirtbikes
had a clear advantage in the cornering. Steve and I
both blasted into the 1 & 2 positions early in the
race but the dirtbikes overtook both of us, carving
through openings a Midbike wouldnt be able to. Todd
Kollins was hangin out in the back on his electric

Me(3) for the first 2 laps then I and a dirtbiker
found a way to get around Steve. The dirtbiker
eventually won and I barely nudged out Todd for 2nd
with less than a 1/4 lap to go. The adrenaline rush
was so intense that I had no problem driving the hour
