[OzMOSS] ASP.Net Controls in MOSS

2008-11-22 Thread Uzma Naz

I have an unusual situation. I've migrated contents from an existing SharePoint
farm using content deployment job.

The new farm on a new server is running well, I can see that all contents have
sucessfully been transferred using SiteManager.aspx but I cannot view any
pages. Looking into the site further, the master page has ASP.Net controls and
I have found dll files which relate to the site.

So my question is what steps do I need to take in order to view my page
correctly? I've seen that I must register the assemblys, using strong names and
using GAC. That is pretty much alien to me as I am not a .Net developer.

Any advice will be very, very helpful.

Also, you'd think with a content deployment AND a full farm backup/restore that
you could replicate sites but guess it isn't that easy (darn SharePoint!)

Many thanks.

RE: [OzMOSS] RE: create SharePoint development same as production site

2008-11-18 Thread Uzma Naz

My central administration backup feature was riddled with errors, with lots of
incorrect content databases and paths.

So I've done a clean install of SP2007 on a new server and selected which sites
I wanted to transfer, as I was working on a dev environment anyway.
I found that the tool used in SPDesigner 2007 was pretty handy for smaller
sites which hardly had any customisation. I had a customer database which
was being built but and the stsadm export tool worked like a charm.

But now I have a working server and farm, I'll try out backing up and restoring
a site using central administration and get back to you guys with what I
have found

My only grovel with this process is that any customised list, data forms or
views created are not replicated exactly on the production/migration site. I'll
need to go through each site to make sure that the look and feel is a-ok.

I have been using backup/restore for deployment between different environments
and then I found this

Be aware that backup/restore of MOSS content databases between server farms are
not fully supported! Official documentation of this support limitation is
currently in the works. The supported way to transfer content between server
farms is to use STSADM -o export/import or content deployment. Backup/restore
is only supported for the same server farm

Though I haven't had the error in the above post so far and have deployed about
15 web applications so far...

There is no OOTB way to backup content selectively and omit some files. What you

Hi Michael,

Sorry to pick up an old thread but I'm just getting ready to backup/restore our
production environment to development in order to have a current version to
work with.

Is the GUI-based Farm backup in Central Administration smart enough to
recognise different farm topology, configurations, paths, domains, ports etc.,
and update them? Having not gone down this road before I'm finding the unknown
more than a little frightening.

Also, does anyone know of a method to selectively backup content – i.e.
_without_ the content in document libraries?

What's the reason for this, why u need to copy the whole environment? Because
usually you are doing it vice versa, from development to production

Just make a whole farm backup on production box and restore on your box via
OOTB backup/restore

[OzMOSS] Filtering/Changing Bad Language in Blogs

2008-10-14 Thread Uzma Naz

Someone at work asked an interesting question... can SharePoint screen for bad
language used in blogs? I've never thought of that prior to releasing the
company blog, I realise that there are sites out there which can use add ins or
plug ins. Has anyone dealt with this before? Can't seem to find information on
the web, although the use of ISA server may help.

[OzMOSS] Sync SharePoint List to an xml file

2008-10-06 Thread Uzma Naz

I'm having real fun using Visifire with my SharePoint site, I am able to
display 3D charts by the use of XML files, which renders a chart using
Silverlight.

I have created an update data view from the XML files so that the charts can be
updated manually. A data source is available in the form of an XML list. I have
created a view to display latest figures. I need some help in automating the
system.

Here's the scenario.

- Original file has been emailed into the company in XLS form.
- The data source is copied and pasted into a SharePoint List (or synched,
whatever the method)
- You then go into the aspx page which displays the chart, a section displays
latest figures which is generated from the List. The person then presses
insert in each data source to update the chart on screen. There are 16 pages
to update in this mannar.

Can this process be automated so when an update is processed, the latest
figures are rendered? It would mean a few things, the XML file is opened, a new
line created with a new month and data from the list imported, without
over-riding previous data.

Any pointers will be much appreciated.

[OzMOSS] Sharepoint Deployment Globally

2008-09-22 Thread Uzma Naz

Hi there,

I've got a potential upcoming project and have been thinking about the
technicalities with deploying a Sharepoint site with people who need to access
it around the world.
I have recommended a single site admin as per guidances on MSDN and well as
other white papers, the company would need to make sure that there is a WAN
rather than a LAN set up in their IT infrastructure too.

I wanted to know what else I should be thinking of? Of course the usual AD,
profiling, targetting audiences will come into play. I'm fairly confident on
content, design and architecture (still learning, lol!). In particular, how is
it best to have a secure SP site as a HTTPs (Intranet being accessed through
Internet without the use of TS)

Any help and useful tips will be great.

RE: [OzMOSS] File size, doctype and icon columns?

2008-08-12 Thread Uzma Naz

Hiya Paul,
Thanks for the screen shots.

What you need to do is go to that webpart, rightclick and convert to XSLT. Once
you have done that, SPD will render whatever fields you are requesting from the
library, the available content fields will appear on the right hand side.

Delete the webpart, design the table or look or feel of what you want and
insert your content as a single (if you only want to show one document), or
multiple (if you have many files in the library).

You should be able to drag and drop wherever you want. You then click on the
little right arrow that appears when you hover over a field to drop in any
extra fields such as the icon/type etc.

Remember to adjust the web part properties to further customise, e.g show
toolbar, name of the webpart etc. (do this by right clicking on the actual
webpart and go to properties)

I notice that you have your uploading toolbar which you probably want to do
without as you just want information rather than that...

Good luck!

Hi Uzma,

I’ve attempted what you suggested but have hit a couple of snags that I hope
you can help with. Perhaps I’m missing the process of converting/creating an
XSLT data view?

The steps I’ve followed are:

1.Add all required columns to existing document library.
2.Open page for editing in SPD.
3.Insert new Data View.
4.Select existing doc library as data source.
5.Select required columns and insert selected fields as Single Item View
(just to preview results).

This gives me the following which shows the original doc library with my
custom data view below.

As you can see, the required columns are present and available but their
display is not as expected. Looks like SP does some custom operations on these
which aren’t available when they’re converted to a data view. To be expected I
suppose.

Now, if I had the relevant code I could probably incorporate it but where to
begin…?

This really shouldn’t be this hard. L

What if... you create a document library view with as much info as possible...
display it on a page and edit with SharePoint Designer. Convert the view into
XLST, you can then select whatever fields you want to show by dragging over
available columns which should contain file size. However... this would be a
one fix solution, I'm not sure if you can export this web view and deploy in

Hi all,

I have a need to grab the document file size (plus file type, icon etc) and
display it in a Summary Links or CQ web part under the heading “Related
Documents” on a publishing page.

Unfortunately you can’t filter by this column. In fact, it doesn’t appear to be
a column at all and is only available for views.

My plan was to:

- export the CQWP
- add the required fields to the appropriate properties and import as
custom web part
- add a custom style to ItemStyle.xsl and reference the columns with
xsl:value-of [EMAIL PROTECTED] / etc.

But I don’t think this will work if the columns aren’t available.

Does anyone have any idea how you might go about grabbing and re-issuing this
valuable info?

I’d consider adding them programmatically as custom site columns as I’d like
this info to be widely available.

Kind regards,Paul

[OzMOSS] Recommended/Essential Software for SharePoint

2008-08-04 Thread Uzma Naz

Hiya,

I've got some great news: Today I handed in my resignation letter to my
manager. It was a long time coming (considering that no attempt was made to
update my job description or pay reflecting MOSS technology!!), so I have been
job hunting and have got a job as a SharePoint Consultant in Reading, UK.

One thing I would like to do is recommend software for the company to have in
hand before I start. Part of my work will involve some architecture/planning
work. Software that I have worked with and love is Mindjet (mind manager) and
the usual Office applications.
Is there anything else that I can recommend as a really good tool to aid me to
completely redesign and help develop SharePoint sites please?

Many thanks - Will hope to set up a blog of my own soon!!

Friday, 23 May 2008 9:32 AMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: RE: [OzMOSS] 3 Step Workflow

Hi. This sounds like something that SPD could do quite well, and OOTB.

However you’ll have to use it to create tasks using the Collect Data From a
User action. This uses a tasklist. You then need to tell the workflow in
subsequent steps to reference the outcome of the task field and use the List
Item ID which is outputted to a workflow variable to interrogate the result of
the task.

In the first step you’d create a Collect Data From a User task, assigned to the
value of ‘Reviewer1’ which you set up as a person field.
In the second step you have a conditional branch. If it’s fine you update the
Approval field with something and then carry on to the next step of Approval.
If it needs work you can send an email to the ‘user who created the current
item’ with the comments from the reviewer. Then stop the workflow. Once
they’ve updated they can manually re-start it.

In the third step, if it has been given the thumbs up by Reveiwer1, you could
have a Reviewer2, or whatever. You could even ask reviewer 1 to assign a
Reviewer2. Then if it’s got a value get them to review it, if it’s null skip
it.

Eventually you can get to the actually approver. Send them a task, and based
on the outcome of that set the ‘Approved’ field in the document library, and
send an email to the Person Who Created The Current Item.

Done.

Drawbacks:
SPD doesn’t do loops, if you want that then Nintex is good and lightif you’re
thinking no-code, otherwise K2 but that’s pretty heavy.
Using the content of a task in the workflow requires using the Workflow
Variable (accessible through Workflow Data) to do the match. It can be
confusing getting it to work for the first time.
The only way to surface information gathered in a task is through an email.
You can’t insert it into a later task.

But hey, it’ll get you 80% of the way there with no code at all.

If this is really confusing, let me know and I’ll have a play and send some
screenshots.

Tamlyn

I have had 2 weeks instensive one to one training on Sharepoint and I had my
first solo flight with the system and I am just amazed with what I can do
with this product. There is a requirement in another portal that is created
that a document needs to go through a 3 part workflow. For example: Author
creates a document and once happy with the document, checks it into MOSS. The
document is now in Draft Approval state. The author then starts the approval
workflow, which sends the file to a particular person for a peer review. The
peer reviewer looks at the document, suggests changes etc. and it is sent back
to the author. The author then sends the document to their manager (would be a
normal approver), to get the document published as Approved. I have had a
look at the out of the box workflow, the 3 step workflow and Heather Solomon's
blog and cannot get to where I want. I have everything else perfected, content
types, security... but this is the biggest snag. I have Sharepoint Designer

lot to ask, as I have an important presentation in about 12 hours time. It

There is a requirement in another portal that is created that a document needs
to go through a 3 part workflow.

For example:

Author creates a document and once happy with the document, checks it into
MOSS.

The document is now in Draft Approval state.

The author then starts the approval workflow, which sends the file to a
particular person for a peer review.

The peer reviewer looks at the document, suggests changes etc. and it is sent
back to the author.

The author then sends the document to their manager (would be a normal
approver), to get the document published as Approved.

I have had a look at the out of the box workflow, the 3 step workflow and
Heather Solomon's blog and cannot get to where I want. I have everything else
perfected, content types, security... but this is the biggest snag.

I have Sharepoint Designer and understand some basics. Can anyone help me with
this? I know it's quite a lot to ask, as I have an important presentation in
about 12 hours time. It would give me great brownie points to have this
workflow almost there, not totally complete, but at least started.

If I can get this done, I'll be able to go to a 5 day residential Sharepoint
Designer course and save the company £75K (according to the Project
Manager!)...

Will appreciate any help.

Thanks Aaron. I'm in the process of getting trained up by a consultant, I
realise what I have to do now (copy of core.css and customise etc.) Thanks
again!

The best way is to create your own css file and then override any of the
SharePoint styles that you need to.

Have a look at http://www.heathersolomon.com/, not a bad place to start to
understand how to style your SharePoint site.

I have a question, which I hope you can point me in the right direction: Where
should I ideally work from to update font types and sizes in MOSS? I've done
research in CSS files etc and scratching my head with where I should go from
here.. I have created my own master template, which has been customised with a
logo etc. The site is looking good, however the top navigation text and buttons
need to go up a few sizes.. advice would be really great. Uzma Naz(UK)

[OzMOSS] List Views and Links

2008-05-16 Thread Uzma Naz

I'm getting on very well with the first phase of Sharepoint development. It's a
massive improvement on the current Intranet that I have at the moment. We have
a notice board which is in one HTML page and we manually put in data such as
title, content, author and date. With sharepoint, I've designed a really cool
page and able to add in fields such as for the attention of, level of
importance etc.

Hopefully, this will recieve great response from the project board.

However.. I've hit a snag.

I've created a custom view in my page library which contains my notices.

This displays type (so if it's .doc, .aspx etc) which is linked, article date,
title, importance, for the attention of.

I would like users to click on the title to read what the notice is about. At
the moment, only the type is linked and all other options are not suitable.

I cannot find Title (linked to page) field in this custom view.

Should I create another field called Article Title as a custom type and apply
it to my content type that I'm using.. should that remedy the problem so users
can click on this once the view is modified?

I'm concerned that the out of the box title field is causing the problem.

Your advice much appreciated.
