Norm,

For example: AGM vs. flooded; size; supplier; cost; etc.

Given regulations in FL, it may not be legal for that marina owner to
"clean the bottom" in his marina.  He may have to get a dredging permit,
which last I heard was very difficult to get.

Whatever way you lift it, do it slowly so the water has time to drain out.
Recently heard of a sunken catamaran lifted too quickly via crane,
and the weight of the water twisted the hull-deck structure and did a lot
of damage.

Meanwhile, I'll be heading out to check on the boat cover, lines, and

a topic which has been explored before but possibly germane to those
of us wet-storing over the winter.
Will 6-v wet cell batteries be damaged by leaving the on-board charger
activated over 4 months (Dec/Jan/Feb/Mar) so it maintains a float
charge? In my case, I've got an inverter/charger. I think that while
the unit is on and the status panel is on there's some minimum draw
even as the batteries are being charged.

I'm part of cruisers_online_network, a truly international list (many

I'm away from my home computer, but I'll follow up in a week or so

That said, I wouldn't disengage from this. Also, I DETEST web
interfaces of all stripes, much preferring listserve, or at a
distance, NNTP newsgroups, where stuff comes to my mailbox without the
need to log on, go to a web site, or any other much more bandwidth
intensive activity. It also allows me a preview of what I'm either
going to open or disregard, vs having to wade through lots of
title-only stuff in forums...

My 2 cents; this is a great list, taking a breather :{))

Re: [Liveaboard] Inventory Software

A document management system is not really a database, though it does take a
couple of hours of learning curve. After that, you just click to add a pdf,
or scan a document. "Devon Think" has OCR that works well, so even with
pictures & scans, you can search on the text of the drawing or picture. After
you add, you might type in a few tags, such as "boat" "plumbing" "2011". hit
return and you are done. I do this with every piece of paper in my life, and
trash the paper after scan. You can locate it in just a few seconds years
from now.

Re: [Liveaboard] Inventory Software

2011-07-21 Thread Bill Steer
If you are going to "Organize" you might consider something like Devon Think.
This takes all your pdfs, jpgs, does ocr on them, and files them. Then you
can search for tags, keywords, etc. If I type in pump, it will bring up the
10 or 15 scans for toilette pumps, repair of engine water pumps, etc.

Unfortunately the 2000R is out of production and I can't find one in
stock anywhere. Xantrex didn't know of any either.

There's a replacement out that only monitors the batteries, it doesn't
control the charger/inverter. So you have to buy the control panel
also. Total price comes to about $400. I'll may have to go that route.

Thanks,
Jim.

For those who are interested.

Jan's son David has lost his fierce fight to save his foot.  Damaged in a
motorcycle accident, it was broken into three pieces.  After months of
intense pain involving multiple bone and flesh surgeries, a record number
of hyperbaric treatments, painful skin grafts, PIC lines, and almost daily
medical appointments an intractable infection has set into his bones and is
moving up his tibia.  His foot will be removed mid-calf on May 9th.

Jan and I wish to thank everyone who have expressed concern for his
well-being.

Re: [Liveaboard] Dr Oz (pills during circumnavigation)

2011-02-10 Thread Bill Wright
I read an article on a study from medline that found people who had taken
statin
choleterol medications such as Zocor and Lipitor for at least 5 years and then
stopped were much less likely to die from heart attack or stroke than
those that
hadn't.  Apparently many elderly stop taking these medications due to cost or
other reasons after they retire but still seem to be protected.

FYI

Jim --> Cholesterol meds has nothing to do with dissolving the clot or
"clogging".  There are other anticoagulant meds such as Aspirin, Heparin,
Coumadin, Plavix, etc etc depend on CHAD score for stroke risk.

Ahmet --> Diet and exercise is always the preferred and best way to control
cholesterol level.  Also lifestyle change such as nicotine and alcohol free,
stress free. There are factors that we can't change such as gene.  Many people
able to wean off the cholesterol meds with proper exercise and good diet
control.  Diet control involving low salt, low sugar, low fat, high fiber, lots
of fresh vegetable and fresh fruit. (Canned fruit full of syrup containing high
sugar, unless no other way to get fresh fruit, then can fruits better than no
fruit!).

PS-diabetes, age, high blood pressure, heart failure all increase stroke risk.
ps- obesity(lack of exercise and bad diet), nicotine, alcohol, stress,
contribute to heart attack.

Um, *my* understanding - NOT an MD - is that actually the cholesterol
meds treat the symptom and do *nothing* to fix the root issue. They
lower what the tests measure, but not the actual degree of 'clogging'
in your arteries.

fyi.

The weather is best in the Chesapeake from mid September to the end of October.

We leave New England soon after Labor Day (the first weekend in September) and
head for Cape May NJ (sometimes via Long Island Sound, sometimes directly from
the Cape Cod Canal depending on the weather predictions), through the Cape May
Canal and up the  Delaware Bay, through the C&D Canal and into the Chesapeake.
We start at Harve de Grace at the northern end of the Bay, visit Baltimore (the
Fells Point area) then go to Annapolis for the Sailboat Show.  Reedville is a
favorite, Urbana too.  We did visit Philadelphia once.

One year we went up the Potomac River, visited George Washington's home and did
the DC museums.  DC is a mixed bag.  The museums are wonderful but the general
atmosphere is threatening.  Jan had bad experiences with both cops (Apparently
taking photos in DC is illegal.  The cop wanted to steal her very expensive
camera but eventually settled for deleting the photo of a statue with an office
building in the background.) and belligerent blacks at the supermarket.  We
won't go back there.

Norfolk is a favorite, we stay at least a week there.  Then three day trips in
the ICW to Moorhead City and offshore to Jacksonville for the winter.

I suggest you investigate having the motor repaired and/or rewound locally.
This might be much less expensive and just as good as replacing the motor,
