Ed, just a note that the Canaries are part of the Schengen group as they
are part of Spain. What will that do for your stay?

I had a friend who was RVing around the EU back in 2003. He ran into the
6 month limit in Schengen when wanting to cross by ferry from Denmark to
Sweden so he could eventually make it to Norway. His Choice was to head
to the airport and out of hop a ferry to Poland which was not Schengen
at that time.

I had a Dutch government friend ask questions and there were no answers
as this was not what anyone had happen before that the governments knew
of. They did not know how to handle the whole problem. I thought there
were some nationalities that did not have to leave if they could show
self support without infringing work visa and/or whatever else... I will
check and see what I can find as some of the immigration officials are
still operating with outdated rulebooks...

Besides, you need to spend more time in Portugal.

I worked in the BVI as a boat bum in a previous life and during that
period, a boat was set adrift in St. Martin by the unscrupulous owners
to sink in a hurricane for insurance. They even set a fire. Said boat,
the Chikuzen, drifted away awaiting its fate at the hands of said storm
only to drift all the way to the BVI, through the Ginger Island Passage
before attempts were made to guide or steer her to a safe passage. The
hurricane had changed course. This drifting boat had made the
90-something mile journey and slipped through the passage without
problem. I wish it had been so easy when I did that route!

can try to jack the hull up out of the water so it can dry and be
repaired. Going to go back tomorrow and hose out the hull with fresh
water to try to limit the damage from the salt water. Then we will
bleach the hull.

Hopefully the worst part of the ordeal is over.

Re: [Liveaboard] EXT :Re: Hull breach and about 2 feet of water in my boat.

2012-04-30 Thread John Sexton
That is a pretty big pump to get no result. That indicates that your
leak is quite large. You should be able to run the pump and throw some
dye in the water around your boat and located approximately where your
leak is.

Another method could be to buy a large tarp, place it around the
offending hull, pump said hull out and tarp should suck right up to
hull. Then add water and dye in between hull and tarp. the water
pressure will push it through your leak and you will not have diluted
dye. Added benefit is that you have a limited amount of water coming in
and this may assist in the location being a bit more apparent.

[Liveaboard] Boat for Sale...still!

2011-03-24 Thread John Sexton
As my departure to Europe approaches, I find I am still with boat. As I
am getting older and wish to have a more old folk friendly boat, I am
not sailing nor taking my present boat with me. I have had no luck
selling her so I am looking for ridiculously low offers. I know the
economy is bad but this is a bargain as the batteries, solar
installation, new and as yet uninstalled roller furling genoa etc do
have value.

36 foot tri draws 2 feet. Ketch rig with all sails within 6 years and
little use. refrigerator runs on 12v and draws 25 amps max per day so
solar installation and 495 AH battery keeps it running with no problem.
Ashore now but will be able to hit water within a week or so, depending
on my energy levels. God I hate it when my boat is ashore.

If you know anyone who might be remotely interested, let them know. I
email pics if requested and will be setting up a link this evening.

Thanks,
John

Re: [Liveaboard] Stoves

2011-02-27 Thread John Sexton

Does anyone on a sailboat use a non-gimbaled stove? If so,
how do you deal with cooking under sail?

We have only a cooktop on our tri. That said, we picked up a Swiss made
cooktop stove. It looks like a biscuit pan with roundish bottom and top.
When you open it, there is an inner pan on a spacing rack. The bottom
outside piece has a hole in the bottom to allow the heat to enter the
enclosure and surround the inner pan, which in turn holds the object
being cooked. There is an adjustable vent in the top to try to control
temperature. It works great once you learn the temp control...

This all said, we seldom cook in it while at sea.

To sell to a resident of the EU, the boat will have to be imported. For
a boat like the Hunter, I would suggest a broker that crosses country
line, ie has offices in more than one country. I would then choose based
on reputation.

That said, I like the professionalism of
DeValk
from the Netherlands. Go have a read and see what you think...

offices in the Netherlands as well as Palma and Antibes.

Re: [Liveaboard] France

2010-09-30 Thread John Sexton
Lee...Not an easy task as I have not been around the French harbors in
many years, but here goes...

Most of the Bay of Biscay ports are not cruiser ports. You need to be in
Normandy or Bretagne for that. Cherbourg, Saint Malo and Brest are but a
few. That said, the area between Île de Ré and Île d' Oléron is a major
area for boating recreation though this is more weekend and summer
vacation stuff. La Rochelle is a do not miss location.

On the Med, Cap d' Agde seems to dominate with its marina complex but
try not to be embarrassed as there is a large portion of the town which
is clothing optional. Another couple of large and not too exclusive
ports which are further east are Port Hyères and La Lavandou.

Give this link a try. It has all of the
marinas with some info. It is a real pain in the ass to use though as
you have to click through a million or so links. Set some time aside to
learn it and then it is a great source.

This link is
a little less informative and covers only the Med but is a lot easier to
navigate.
This link
is the easiest to use...

What exactly are you looking for?

Re: [Liveaboard] Greetings

2010-08-15 Thread John Sexton
Ton,

You should have a multiple entry/exit visa in your passport. If you have
traveled through a US airport with this passport, you have it. You boat
will need a cruising permit if you stay longer than a year. There was
talk about getting rid of this but that is all it is, talk. You get the
cruising permit from a US Customs office.

Groetjes Ton,

If you have questions about your Dutch registered boat cruising in the
US, just zip me an email. We brought our tri over and cruised from FL to
TX 6 years ago and while we don't live aboard at the moment, have done
so and maneuvered through the paperwork.

[Liveaboard] Hedley Nicol tri for sale

2010-08-10 Thread John Sexton
I am putting our Hedley Nicol trimaran up for sale. She hit the water in
1978 and I have owned her since 1990.

11.20X6.20X0.65 (thats 36'9"X 20'4"X2'2")
ketch rigged with 7 year old main and mizzen
new roller furling system and sail for genoa.
16 hp Renault Couach RC-16D with complete spare engine and shop manuals

This boat was built in the Netherlands using Bruinzeel marine plywood
diagonally glued. The deck has been fiberglassed. This is a pretty comfortable
sailing cruising tri
that falls dry on an even keel as all three hulls have the same draft.

Right now she is ashore in Port Oconnor, Tx for much needed repair, maintenance
and such. She was the only boat on her dock at Marina del Sol in Kemah to not
sink during Ike but she did sustain some damage and I have just managed to sail
her to POC a few months ago so I could work on her.

She has four 75 watt solar panels, a Sterling charger/controller and a battery
bank of 495 AH which may or may not stay with the boat depending on negotiated
price... She also has a water cooled Isotherm refrigeration system in a self
built box that uses about 20 amps a day to keep cool.

I can send photos to those interested. As is, this is not a sail away into the
sunset boat but could be with just a bit of work.

VAT for EU is paid. Boat is registered in the Netherlands at present.

John
