I think you might find ttmkfdir useful. It's like mkfontdir for
truetype fonts. I have used an older version, and I don't know how
well it's being maintained. It's now available at
http://freshmeat.net/redir/ttmkfdir/10789/url_tgz/ttmkfdir.tar.gz .

I believe ttmkfdir comes with freetype2, now.

Re: [luau] Linksys and Red Hat (Not)

2002-08-13 Thread MonMotha

Tulip, which was initially developed by NASA, is an open-source project.
As such, it is incumbent upon the due diligence of each distro to make sure
that it can properly detect the various modifications thereof.

The tulip driver is actually maintained as it's own project
(http://tulip.sourceforge.net I think), and also by the kernel
maintainers. Of course many distributions have people working on the
kernel and possibly the tulip driver, but it's more a function of the
linux kernel, which is largely the same across all distributions (it's
what makes them Linux).

[luau] Linksys and Red Hat (Not)

2002-08-13 Thread W. Wayne Liauh

Hi, Warren and Mon-

I apologize that I probably made it more complicated than it had to be.

The issue is not the tulip driver, but hardware detection of NIC cards
using tulip chipset. As Mon mentioned, the tulip driver for the Linksys
NIC chipset, which was correctly identified by Mandrake as well as most
other distros, comes with the kernel itself. I didn't have any problem
making the Linksys card work with Red Hat Limbo or 7.3. All you need to
do is making sure that the modules.conf file has a correct statement
"alias eth0 tulip". I just don't know how to do this graphically in Red
Hat.

The reason I particularly mentioned the Linksys cards is that, with
rebate, etc., you can often get them free at CompUSA.

I am using Mozilla 1.0 and I installed it in my user directory instead of
in the /usr/local or something. Then I just followed the Flash
installation instructions and it works fine. I also tried an older flash
plugin with Netscape 6.x with the same setup and it works also.

I don't install in /usr/local because Netscape has some problems when
installed as root and shared for all users. Since only I use the
computer, I just install it in my home directory.

That may be true that Flash5 exists within the Netscape Plugin but for some

[luau] Oracle Pro C on Linux

2002-08-13 Thread Vikram Khurana
You were right about my gcc not being liked by the Oracle compiler. I
found out that the compiler is only compatible with gcc 2.95 & my RH 7.3

install came with gcc 2.96
So I copied the gcc 2.95.3 files from another RH computer and put them
under /usr/local/ on my computer. I also put the
/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.3 path in PATH. However
now I get an error

ld: cannot open crtbeginS.o: No such file or directory

crtbeginS.o does exist in the
/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.3 directory so why the
hell does it not find it??

Also the locate command cannot seem to find any of the gcc files that I
copied from the other RH computer

I'm drowning in gcc hell. Can somebody please tell me what I need to do
to get past this problem?
I did also try to put /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.3 in

LD_LIBRARY_PATH without any luck

It is not necessary to put /usr/local/lib/* in the PATH. The gcc in

Probably because the gcc you are using is /usr/bin/gcc. Which looks in
/usr/lib/gcc-lib for the support files.

When you copied the gcc 2.95.3 from another RH system, was that from the
/usr/local prefix? You can not copy gcc from /usr to /usr/local. When
gcc was built, it is given the prefix directory. gcc will then use this
prefix directory to find things like libgcc*.a and crt*.o. You can try
use the -B option to tell gcc to look somewhere else.

It's possible your slocate database isn't up to date. run "updatedb".

You can probably change the makefile, but I dont' think you'll need to,
if GCC_EXEC_PREFIX

Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with using gcc 2.96?

I remember the thread's subject, but I think i missed a few messages, so
i'm not up to date.

CodeWeavers Crossover Plugin is your only way out of this. $25 product
runs many Windows plugins and Windows software including Flash 6,
Shockwave, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, Adobe Acrobat Reader and AOL

I highly recommend this product. After you buy it, you even have the
rights to download a newer version as they are released for the next (I
think) 6 months. So far they've really delivered on their promise of
better newer versions. Their web page for the product tells you what
works and what doesn't. You can try the free download demo too.

The odd version kernel series is used for development, while the even
versions are "stable". development kernels will often eat your data, so
if you dabble with the 2.5.x series make sure you don't have any
important data, and keep backups. Otherwise the 2.5.x version is very
cool to try and see what new features are coming for 2.6.x. The feature
freeze for 2.5.x is October 31st later this year, so it sounds like we
will have 2.6.x early 2003.
