Re: [LUAU] does computer guts program still exist?

I believe Computer Guts was run exclusively by Scott Belford. Though I'm not
sure.

It was run out at the Boys & Girls club at one time. Maybe someone has
continued it? You could call them and check it out.

As far as I know his program was unique.

Re: [LUAU] RSync help

2011-01-13 Thread Michael Bishop
Aloha Jim,

Can you show us the command you are running and the output with 2 and 3 V's
like rsync -vvvaz SOURCE TARGET. The more V's you add the more verbose the
output. Usually the reason can be determined with 2 or 3 V's of output.

I think the remote server should be running as nobody because access will be
granted to the user which provides the right credentials. There's no good
reason I can think of where it should be running as root or another user.

Happy New Year!!

When it comes to PATA and SATA, in my opinion, 3ware is still the

A boot loader (like Grub) is needed (just like Windows), but in Linux
it's more visible. If you don't need the extra space, then I would just
remove the Win2K option from grub. Open a terminal and:

sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst

Scroll down to the bottom and comment out the Win2K line by putting a #
before the 4 lines associated with Win2K. It may look something like this:

# title Windows 95/98/NT/2000
# root (hd0,0)
# makeactive
# chainloader +1

You can hide the grub menu on boot. There may be a hiddenmenu line that
is commented out, just remove the # from before it.

As a final note, you may want to consider installing the latest version
of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron. So far it appears to be the great distro they've
created.

Good luck.

[LUAU] MySQL and other SQL Engines

Regarding Sun's latest experiment: MySQL. I'm not so sure they are
trying to learn from MySQL as much as trying to push the limit of how
much money they can make off of open source without enraging the users.

What do you think?

Either way, it's the push I need to check out alternatives:

http://www.postgresql.org/
http://www.firebirdsql.org/
http://www.sqlite.org/

At PyCon it seemed to me that PostgreSQL was the choice of many core
project developers. With outstanding DB toolkits like SQLAlchemy. It
should be fairly painless to move to other SQL engines with proper planning.

Any suggestions for good resources about PostgreSQL performance tuning
and best practices?

I agree that LUAU's moderation has been inconsistent. However, since
there has been little to no previous moderation, we should never
moderate? Should another moderated list be created that focuses on LUG
issues?

The sole reason HOSEF-managers was created was to remove HOSEF internal
discussions from the LUAU list. Due to the censorship of HOSEF-manages,
I agree with the current spillover, but this discussion has been going
on for weeks. I think it's time to resolve it and/or move it off-list. I
recall that long flame-wars have been forced off-list in the past and
people have been banned IIRC. Linux Dan, as an example, comes to mind.

I advocate stronger moderation on *this* list because I feel it should
focus on LUG/*nix related stuff.

I disagree with any moderation of HOSEF-managers as I feel it should be
an extension of the HOSEF meetings. I also feel the HOSEF-managers
archives should be private.

[LUAU] HOSEF ?= LUG

2008-03-29 Thread Michael Bishop
After attending PyCon 2008 (which was awesome) and chatting up various
people there, my view on LUGs and community groups has changed. Please
allow me to share my thoughts and questions with you.

What ever happen to the local Linux Users Group (LUG)?

As I recall MPLUG (Mid Pacific Linux Users Group) was rolled into HOSEF
to create a unified *nix group, or at least join forces, since at the
time few people were interested. I know this is no longer the case, I
think there are many people in Hawaii interested in *nix. I think the
flame-fests and lack of LUG events have turned people off. I see fewer
posts with *nix questions and more about infighting and power-plays.
However, I think some good has come out of the latest batch of posts
with regard to restructuring HOSEF. With that in mind...

I'm confused about the membership thing. To be a member of the local LUG
(HOSEF), which advocates FOSS which is free, I must pay to be a member?
I don't believe most LUGs require a cash donation to become a member.

If HOSEF is to continue to be the local LUG, I think it should start
doing more LUG stuff or perhaps MPLUG should rise again. Warren still
owns the domain and I think he might let us use it.

I think LUG membership should be determined by interest and/or
attendance to meetings. For example, you can only become a member by
attending and signing up at OpenSource Pizza, the monthly LUG meeting,
or other LUG events. That way it gets the members and potential members
interacting. I enjoyed getting together for Pizza after slugging
computers around at PriceBusters.

The membership list should be used only to show that there is support in
Hawaii. Right now I couldn't tell if there were 5 or 500 people in
support of the Oahu LUG. I say Oahu, not Hawaii, LUG because there is a
Big Island Linux Users Group [http://bilug.org/]. Not to exclude them,
but point out there is a Big Island LUG, where is the Oahu LUG? [1] Why
can't the HOSEF website say it's the local LUG? It looks like HOSEF, the
foundation, gobbled up HOSEF, the LUG. I think the LUG part of HOSEF
needs to be acknowledged more.

If HOSEF is the local LUG, why hasn't there been a hosef-announce post
about the upcoming Shakacon? What about a calendar or ical feed from
google? Maybe HOSEF should pay a director to keep this active?

As for money to fund to operations, I would rather attend OpenSource
Pizza, chip in $10 for pizza and drinks, and HOSEF keep the change.

I would like to see an Unconference [2] at least once, if not twice, a
year. It doesn't have to be a 3 day marathon. Just a single weekend day
with some interesting talks and lunch. I found the Ruby talk and
Funding, Act 221 talk at the 2008 Unconferenz [3] constructive,
enlightening and informative. (Just to be clear the Unconferenz was not
run by HOSEF) I'd happily fork over $30 for a good lunch, a shirt and
the rest going to HOSEF. I'm sure this could somehow be hosted at UH or
a Community College.

Maybe an Unconference and PFOSSCON could be the 2 main annual
conferences. The Unconference being a local community event. PFOSSCON
being a bigger deal with out-of-state speakers. I really liked the last
PFOSSCON. Perhaps the "extra money" could bring big speakers to the
islands. Or perhaps local sponsors could help fund it. Personally I'd
love to see Guido or Linus come to the islands. Isn't there a famous guy
from SANS that lives on the Big Island?

Money received should go to support hardware/hosting for the lists,
website and mirror. The LUG should have direct control over the
equipment. An individual should not be footing the bill or have supreme
control over the operation of such.

As for eWaste, I think HOSEF, the foundation, should stop taking in
computer trash for money and go back to a standards based approach. Only
take in P3+, 19+ CRT, any LCD, servers, server parts and cool tech
stuff. I think donations of money should be requested, not required, to
cover the pickup costs and to perpetuate HOSEF. For businesses, broken
stuff that's easily fixable should possibly require a donation for
pickup because HOSEF would be providing a service that would otherwise
have to be paid for. We don't want to become the free alternative to
proper disposal. Every situation should be handled with care. I wouldn't
turn away an 8-way server because the donator wouldn't pay to have it
hauled away.

As for storage, each lab could have at least a little space for spares
and if possible extra storage for HOSEF. Once the cache of spares at
each school fills up, either dump the junker stuff or don't take the
donation. Perhaps HOSEF can work with one of the local big storage
companies to grant HOSEF some space for a set period of time (1 year+).
Maybe to have small storage caches at strategic locations throughout the
island.

For any excess computer equipment, how about a waiting list of people
interested in R&D equipment. I recall one student wanting 4 co

[LUAU] LVM Restore

2008-01-16 Thread Michael Bishop
Hi all,

I'm looking for a LVM expert or advice on how to restore an LVM from a
recovered RAID array. This data needs to be recovered ASAP and I'm willing to
hire someone to get it working ASAP.

The RAID array on a 3ware card was changed from a RAID 5 to a RAID 10, then
back to a RAID 5. The system was recovered using RAID Reconstructor and placed
on a new RAID Array.

This is a Centos4 OS with 3 partitions: first partition had the OS; 2nd
partition was swap; and the 3rd most important partition contained a large 500G
LVM. Though I'm not sure because the partition table also had to be rebuilt.

gpart ran for about 2 hours, but I killed it because I didn't think it should
have taken that long. I found an app called Partition Table Doctor which ran
for 30 mins and found 2 partitions that looked about right. Though it didn't
find the swap partition there was a space between the partitions, but double
the size of what I expected the swap to be. Which is why I'm concerned that the
3rd partition wasn't restored properly.

I'm able to boot the system using grub from another hard drive. So the first
partition made it, but a pvscan comes up blank. It doesn't even list the LVM as
invalid or missing. All I need is the data in the LVMs. Another server has
already been built to put the data on it.

Please email me or give me a call if you can help, 429-3030. Again, I'm willing
to pay an expert to fix it.

This has been quite a journey, so I'm planning on documenting it on the HOSEF
wiki to hopefully it can help someone in the future.

Thank you.

Michael

I've had my eye on this for a while. Looks to be best of breed for now.
However, the $500 price tag has me thinking of building a box and
installing FreeNAS.

FreeNAS is a free NAS (Network-Attached Storage)
 server,
supporting: CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, RSYNC protocols, local user
authentication, Software RAID (0,1,5) with a Full WEB configuration
interface. FreeNAS takes less than 32MB once installed on Compact Flash,
hard drive or USB key. The minimal FreeBSD distribution, Web interface,
PHP scripts and documentation are based on M0n0wall
.

They're about $560, plus drives (see recent threads here for what 4 x
250GB fast SATA drives will cost, and note that 750GB SATA drives are
available,
should you really need 3TB of storage in your home. (MythTV backend,
anyone?)
IIRC, Max storage is 2TB. While you can put 750GB HDs in it you're still
limited to the 2TB ceiling.

If you have l33t embedded skills, you can develop your own distro for
this. There is simply no reason it couldn't be your home gateway,
and then
with the exception that most people's broadband connections stuck for
upload(*), it could serve to make your 'media' accessible when you're out

of the home/office.

Personally, I'm waiting for the linux port of ZFS to complete. (Its
very close: http://zfs-on-fuse.blogspot.com/, see also:
http://www.wizy.org/wiki/ZFS_on_FUSE)

Because you really want your SOHO/SMB NAS, full of cheap disks, to be
able to do all you find here:
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/zfs/whatis/

With the right web gui, (so your average prosumer doesn't have to deal
with the ZFS cli), this combination would make a killer home/SMB NAS.
Add a service component to keep a copy of the snapshots on the
big-server-in-the-sky, and you've got something that should sell.

Jim

(*) if you're in the Honolulu core, you can get 9.2Mbps,
fully-symmetric service for a bit under $1k/month.

Sticking with PATA would be non-ideal, but it is no showstopper.
I think 500GB PATA disks should out live their usefulness in 4

Agreed. While the SATA would be great, the IDE would still be bigger

I thought I had posted the fix. Here it is:

Unplug the power and take the cover off the box.
Locate the jumper near the bios.
Move it to the other position.
Leave the box open and plug it in, start the computer.
Change the BIOS setting. Save BIOS.
Unplug the box.
Move the jumper to the original position.
Plug box back in. Start it up and check to make sure it works.
Note that the color of the BIOS screen changes when you change jumper
positions. That is normal.

Make sure to bring needle nose pliers as the box is very tight to work in.

I think we need 2 gig of ram and 15K SCSI.
--Peter

My suggestions/comments are as follows. Please forgive my direct
responses; no intention to offend.

Mobo - good airflow, me like.

Processor - buy a server-class processor, my suggestion provides
0.2Ghz more in speed and doubles the L2 cache to 1MB:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103596
Add $86

Video card - I wouldn't buy one, just strip one from another box, I'm
sure HOSEF has truck loads. Otherwise need to check compatibility
with Linux or pick something more brand name.

Power Supply (PSU) - *wrong* PSU for the mobo, it may be an ATX mobo,
but that doesn't mean it takes an ATX type PSU, you need a type
EPS12V, I suggest:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103478
$103.50

RAM - first off the crucial memory is not listed as compatible for
the Tyan mobo. Half way to second, OCZ RAM, great if your going to
overclock, just keep the extinguisher handy and a few $100 for a new
processor. Second, ECC please, I don't see why no ECC, the following
ECC RAM costs less then either proposed RAM packs, has been qualified
by the Tyan to work with the mobo and has a lifetime warranty. So why
not ECC?

Either get 4 x 512MB, like one of those recommended by Tyan
Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC
3200) System Memory - Retail

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141427
$47.99

or pick one that is compatible via the Crucial list:
http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.asp?model=S2865+Tomcat
+K8E&tabid=AM

If you want 1GB sticks then you'll have to do the leg work; at this
point I'm getting cranky (or lazy). ;-P

Also, PC2700 RAM is plenty fast, don't waste the money on PC3200. I
picked PC3200 above because it was the only 512MB sticks I could find
that Newegg was selling and a brand that I would use. If you pick
fron Crucial, then get PC2700 ECC.

Floppy - get one from HOSEF, I'd find a Sony branded one

Hard Drives - If the budget is so tight that you can't afford to get
a second hard drive, then move down to SATA. The SCSI controller is
very nice, but is the most expensive part at $345. I've had SCSI
drives die within a few weeks. Your entire school is going to
authenticate off this box, can you really afford to be down waiting
for an RMA? I hope you'll be setting up one of those P4's from HOSEF
as a backup. Just fully populate the RAM and toss in 2 HDs running
soft RAID.

In place of $540 SCSI solution which is 1/3rd the budget I suggest:

3ware 80062LPKIT PCI SATA Controller Card - Retail
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16816116030
$126

For the same amount of space:
Western Digital Raptor WD360GD 36.7GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard
Drive - OEM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144200
$101.50

Or for double:
Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74GB 10,000 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard
Drive - OEM

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822144160
$155.00

So for (2) 36G SATA150 10K drives and controller:
$329

Or for (2) 72G SATA150 10K drives and controller:
$436

This is just my quick 2 hour assessment. I think I've covered most of
the bases. However, to make this 'bullet proof' it would take another
2 hours at least, but I think your team can take it from here. Just
make sure you have enough cables (don't forget the mobo comes with
some), the right cables, the right length cables (data and PSU),
enough PSU cables or adapters, check that the PSU will fit in the
case, enough fans, a big enough case (looks kind of small), enough
space for 2 hard drives while keeping in mind airflow for everything,
on second thought, I'd suggest a bigger case unless size is a big
deal. I'd also suggest a rack mount, I find them easier to work with
then a tower. I usually put it on a table, put the monitor on top and
buy a small form KB. There are many nice and inexpensive ones on Newegg.

Peter, if you have any questions, as always you are welcome to give
me a call or drop me an email.

Good luck and have fun!

Michael

Well it depends on how many computers are at the school. But for an
extreme view, lets assume every student has a computer which is very
possible with an LTSP solution.

~$25 per license for Windows XP * 330 computers = $8250
~$120 per license for Windows 2003 * 2 servers = $240
~$3 per CAL * 330 computers = $990

Total = $9480

Add Office 2003 @ ~$50 per license * 330 computers = $16,500

Final total = $25,980

Not counting the hardware needed which I'd estimate at about $8,000
academic pricing for dual processor machines with SCSI drives,
hardware raid and tape backups.

Final Final Total = $41,980

But wait, there's more. We haven't tossed in the need for anti-virus/
anti-spam software and perhaps diskeeper. However, the Hawaii DOE has
purchased a central school-wide solution, so you don't see the cost.
So you are left with the need for a good anti-spam solution. The free

money.

Hope that helps.

In regards to m0n0wall, at home I use it as my firewall/router/DHCP/
DNS/traffic shaper for a VoIP phone (provided by a local company, not
from RR). It's never given me any trouble and I don't worry about it
at all. It works well on an old PC or for a more compact solution on
an embedded system and you can even add wireless to it. Its about
$200 for a 3 NIC board with case; more if you want to add wireless
card, antenna(s), etc. You can also stick it in a weather proof case
and stick it on your roof.

I'm starting to evaluate it as a VPN for my clients particularly as
an office to home and office to office VPNs. I'll post my findings to
the list in case anyone is interested.

Netgate, which Jim owns and operates, sells a Soekris box with
m0n0wall installed and tested. There seems to be the recent addition
of a indoor enclosure where you can add your own Soekris board and
wireless, very nice.

[LUAU] Lab Install this Saturday - Halau Lokahi Charter School - help needed

2005-08-18 Thread Michael Bishop
This coming Saturday, August 20, we have a lab install scheduled at
Halau Lokahi, a public charter school. http://www.halaulokahi.org/
This will be HOSEFs first public charter school lab install. We need all
the help we can get if we are to finish on Saturday so the lab is ready
for students to start using on Monday.

Halau Lokahi is very different from the traditional style of schooling.
Classes are small and are generally help outside in the open air. They
don't have a set building like most K-12 schools so they lease out
office space and create classrooms and offices from that space.

The charter schools are in a unique position within the school system
because they don't have strong ties with the regular DOE. This allows
them to be more open to possibilities. The plan is for the school to
eventually be entirely open source based from the administration level
to the student level.

This Saturday we'll be setting up a 20 client lab for regular classes
and 2 smaller mini labs for individual work. We need help moving 2
printers, 20 thin clients, 25 monitors, 30 KBs and 30 mice from

McKinley Adult School
634 Pensacola St
http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?addr=634

to Halau Lokahi
401 Hart St
http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?addr=401+hart+st&csz=honolulu%2C
+hi&country=us&new=1&name=&qty=

We'll meet at McKinley by 10am to start loading up the equipment for
transport to the charter school.

The schools building is on the corner of Hart and Waiakamilo. The school
is located on the first floor of the Ewa side of the building. Parking
is mauka of the building.

Please let me know if your planning on coming so I can plan out how many
trips we'll need to take.

[LUAU] Today at McKinley - 10am - help needed

Scott has requested help with the computers and stuff at McKinley from
10am on. Please help if you can.

We've recently noticed that we need to bring back testing sheets so we
can keep consistent. (and so we don't keep testing the same boxes again
and again).

I've modified one that I use to make it useful for HOSEF. Please check
it out and let me know what you think. At least it give us something to
start with. Perhaps you can print one or two pages out and bring it with
you.

I've found it best to stick it on the top of the computers.

Thank you.

It sounds more like a hardware problem. Without diagnosing the computer

Stress Linux [http://www.stresslinux.org/] or some stress test
utilities on the Ultimate Boot CD.

All the programs listed above are Free or Open Source except SpinRite
which costs $89. I'd be willing to run it on your drive this Saturday
at McKinley from 10am. Email me if your interested.

I've also had problems with yum/up2date on CentOS 4, which combined
with other problems was enough reason to switch to something else. In
this particular case, I switched to Debian.

Hi Michael-

Have you been able to find solutions to the "suspend to ram" and Wi-Fi

AFAIK for STR, it depends mostly on hardware and ones determination to
get it working. I've had an IBM T42 which worked great, but to get it
to that point took much tweaking and configuring. Even then the hard
work was done by others, I just had to follow the "bread crumbs" as
they say. Also, running Debian, which seems to be the most IBM friendly
distro, helped tremendously.

AFAIK for wifi, particularly for the Centrino, there it greater support
now to the point where it can be considered reliable. For USB wifi will
always be problematic from my POV because it has a small market.

[LUAU] Moving Equipment Plan for Tomorrow

2005-06-15 Thread Michael Bishop
Here is the plan. However, it is contingent on everyone who is involved
agreeing to it. So far Ben and Bully are on board, but I need Thomas
Burns and Jim Thompson to give me a call so we can firm up the plan,
429-3030.

Ben Timmerman, Thomas Burns, Bully and myself will meet tomorrow at 9am
at the UH POST Bldg and load everything into Ben's Van. We'll all go
and drop off the black rack and HP Server at McKinley. Then drop off
the beige rack at Charter School. Bully and I will stay at the Charter
School and move it into place. Which will probably take a few hours
since moving of furniture will be needed. Ben and Thomas will continue
on to Hickam to grab large 16 monitors to be paired with the 16
computers from UH. From there head to Hahaione Elem and drop off the
computers and monitors.

Those monitors consist of extra-heavy back-breaking Sony 19 and 21 inch
monitors and some Dell monitors which I think are 17 inches. I think it
best if 2 people move the monitors, especially the 21 inch ones. If
Thomas cannot make the whole ride, he could stop with us downtown at the
Charter School and we can take him back to UH. If that is the case,
then perhaps Jim Thompson will be able to help out. Jim would you be
able to help Ben at Hickam and then out at Hahaione?

The monitors will be available after 11pm, Jeff Zidek must be called
first before heading onto Hickam AFB. I'll give Ben the numbers.
Paperwork needs to be taken with the monitors to be signed by the tech
coordinator at Hahaione and returned to Jeff. Sending it back by mail
is probably the simplest way to do it.

Who will work with Calvin to move the 20 computers from New Horizons to
McKinley? Calvin, when can we pick them up and who do we need to
contact?

There is no rush on moving the P3s except that we need space at
McKinley. I figure that on Saturday Scott can take the P3s in his truck
after the LTSP class at McKinley. Scott, do you need help moving the
P3s out to Ewa?

Thank you to all who have stepped forward to help get another K12LTSP lab built.

I've been using Matt's service for a few weeks now and so far it works
great. I'm using Residential Road Runner and I haven't needed to
prioritize my traffic. However, if I'm downloading or uploading while on
a call we start to breakup. Which is exactly what Matt had told me would
happen.

I'm looking at setting up a router with HTB
(http://luxik.cdi.cz/~devik/qos/htb/) or some type of packet
scheduler/prioritizer.

As for the phones, I've tried just about every linux based soft phone I
can find and the only one I could get working reliably was the Debian
unstable version of kphone. Its very simple to use and it just works.
The only problem is that I haven't figured out how get an incoming call
to ring on my speakers and not the USB headset.

I allowed Wayne to come in and play during the same time as HOSEF.
People came to see what he was doing. But it interfered with other
previously scheduled items. I was lax in creating a time for this
activity as I had been asked to. As such, this has become so much more
of a conflict and issue then is shown on the list. So as of today it
will be removed.

McKinley was opened by me to allow HOSEF a place to meet, work and play.
In return HOSEF has provided McKinley with at least 30 computers to
create a good lab. While McKinley students use to learn English and for
HOSEF to use for classes and activities.

For those that don't know, I was hit by a car in February while riding
my bicycle. Since then I've been re-evaluating my life and have begun to
restructure it. This has been a very difficult time for me and has
interfered with my effectiveness.

So for at least the next month I won't be hosting anything at McKinley.
Once I am more effective in my everyday issues, then I will be back to
hosting classes and activities. One of the classes I am looking forward
to is a structured LPI class that I hope to start next month. We'll have
a good book, good instructors and a set start and end time. The class
will be about 2.5 months long.

I hope this clarifies the issues and helps to answer any questions that
may have been raised by my silence.

When resizing or making any major changes to a hard drive setup, it is
always wise to backup important data.

If WinXP currently takes up all available space, then you would need to
either resize it or add another hard drive. Free tools for resizing are
included on the Ultimate Boot CD (ultimatebootcd.com) or a commercial
tool called Partition Magic may be used.

Most distros use GRUB for a boot loader, which I would also recommend.
Generally they will find and setup the WinXP partition in GRUB for easy
loading. Unless you are setting up something unusual, then there should
be no problems with GRUB.

As for virus checking software, unless it can see the partition it won't
scan it. WinXP cannot see linux partitions. So you should have no
problems.

[LUAU] Zire 31 and Evolution

2005-04-25 Thread Michael Bishop
I'm currently using Evolution for my email, calendars, contacts and
tasks. So far its been great, but I'd really like to be able to take it
on the road. A laptop would be just too much to deal with, so I'm
turning to a PDA. My research has lead my to the Zire 31, an entry-level
color Palm-based PDA. I've tested one out and it seems to work well.

My question is simply will I be able to sync Evolution and the Zire
together? I need to be able to sync my tasks, calendars, contacts and
some files. Is anyone on LUAU doing this? How well does it work?

I googled around and spent many hours reading up. I can only guess that
it will work because usually all I read about is the problems. Which is
why I now turn to LUAU...

[LUAU] brainbench certs

2005-03-20 Thread Michael Bishop

Brainbench is making all their certs free from March 21 through April 4.
http://www.brainbench.com/xml/bb/landing/offer/promotion.xml?contentId=2310

I've taken some of the free ones in the past. The tests were acceptable,
but the validity comes into question because of the possibiliy of
cheating and that you can retake the test 3 times before it is noted on
your transcript.

I think they charge a few dollars for a printed cert. May be good cert
fodder for those clueless HR people.

BTW, I am not affilicated with them and I could care less if you use
them. Just passing along some information that I thought maybe useful.

Have fun!

Just a quick reminder that the location for the HOSEF Org Meeting today
has changed to Pizza Hut at Stadium Marketplace, 1050 Ahua St. The
meeting will take place at 3:30pm and should be through by 4pm.

The most important part comes afterward as we eat pizza and brainstorm

roadmap for the next 3 moths, please attend if at all possible. Your
input is vital to the success of HOSEF.

[LUAU] Wood for Servers

2005-01-07 Thread Michael Bishop
Our wood burning servers need more wood to keep them going... just
kidding...

We need at least 2 shelves for the recently donated rack. We have
supports (old server rails) and we thought to just get some wood planks
to place on top of the supports to make shelves. Shelves must be at
least 23 inches by 19 3/8 inches by at least 3/8 inch with 1/2 inch
preferable.

These shelves will be used to support the servers HOSEF uses to run
classes at McKinley.

Please contact me off list if you can help us put some shelves into our
HOSEF rack.

Thank you.

[LUAU] Ubuntu CDs for you

2004-12-23 Thread Michael Bishop
Finally, they have come:
 - 12 Intel i386 packs with an installation and a Live CD
 - 4 PowerPC installation CD
 - 4 AMD64 Installation CDs

These are beautifully packaged sets. The CD covers are simple and
elegant with lots of contrasts that say, "HERE I AM, INSTALL ME!"

I'm putting 2 PowerPC CDs on the side to go with the 2 G3's heading for
the Ewa Boys and Girls Club. I'm keeping 2 Intel i386 CDs.

The rest are up for grabs. I'll be at McKinley Community School this
Friday and next Friday from 10am - 4pm. Just head up to room 208 and ask

[LUAU] FYI - Debian-Installer release candidate 2

2004-11-23 Thread Michael Bishop
This second Debian-Installer release candidate is expected to be the
final release of the installer for Debian 3.1 (sarge). Limited changes
have been made to the installer since the pre-rc2 release last month,
but there are a few:

* Support for LVM volumes on software RAID.
* Experimental support for installing with the 2.6 kernel on the
hppa architecture.
* Lots of improvements to the installation manual, which is now
fully translated to Spanish, French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese,
and Czech
* Fixes for most errata items.
* More bug fixes than we care to recall.

[LUAU] NEWS: Debian-Installer pre-rc2

2004-10-05 Thread Michael Bishop
New Debian Net Installer it out, don't forget to read the errata -
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/errata

Debian-Installer pre-rc2, a technology preview release

September 30th, 2004

The pre-rc2 release is a preview of new features we hope to add to the
next release candidate. This release is an opportunity to get some wider
testing of our most recent improvements to the installer before we
declare it stable and ready for the release of sarge.

In the nearly two months since the release of rc1, we've made a number
of improvements to the installer, including:

* Support for completely automated installs via debconf database
preseeding.
* Online resizing of NTFS filesystems.
* Support for booting from LVM.
* Support for booting from software RAID 1 (experimental).
* Software RAID 5.
* 2.4.27 and 2.6.8.1 kernels.
* Support for piles of additional hardware.
* Fixed all of the errata of rc1.
* Installs possible with at little as 24 mb of memory.
* Two months of improvements to the software in Debian sarge.
* More other improvements than we could list here in a week.

This version of the installer is not suitable to be used as the final
installer for the Debian sarge release; it may have rough edges and not
all the translations are up-to-date. It should work fine for most
people, and we welcome your installation reports.

[LUAU] Article on CD Burning - Good Info

2004-09-23 Thread Michael Bishop
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0OUK/is_4_10/ai_115076404

Whenever you are testing or making a critical CD-R (especially one for
archival storage or for replication), burn the discs in disc-at-once
mode instead of track-at-once mode method, which is available in many
audio and duplication applications. Disc-at-once mode will burn the disc
in its entirety without switching the writing laser off. Track-at-once
will burn each track separately; switching the write laser on and off.
Track-at-once produces errors on the disc, often rectified on playback
via error correction. In addition, track-at-once discs do not conform to
the Red Book specifications (the standard for audio CDs), thus making
them incompatible with various players and not excepted by various
duplication facilities.

[LUAU] Saturday Workshop Agenda

2004-09-17 Thread Michael Bishop
Workshop will be from 1pm to 5pm. Lots to do.

We need to:
 - Pull valuables from generic P1's including Hard Drives, PCI cards
(SCSI, NIC, etc.) and newer RAM.
 - Start testing P2's and branded Dell and IBM P1's. MemTest RAM and
test NIC to produce a ready to go thin client.

We need volunteers to haul this stuff home to toss in their garbage cans
or ask some benevolent soul to drag a load to the dump.

At 2pm, Jeff "ZeeMan" will be doing a show and tell about Eproms. Check
out his documentation, ( http://www.hosef.org/wiki/EpromBurning ). He'll
demo pulling chips and flashing them to add to NICs to make them PXE
boot.

See you Saturday.
