Re: [luau] Configuring Router

2002-07-26 Thread Ben Beeson
Dan,

I apologize for the delay in replying. I set mine up like this:

Inet <->  Linux Router/firewall <-> hub <|-->  Sparc 20
|->   Dual CPU Linux box
|
|--- > wireless router <---|---> iMac
|
|--> Windoze
Game Box

I'm quite sure there are other/better ways to do this, but it is what I came
up with for my home situation.The good news is, I didn't have to drill
any holes or string any cable other than behind a desk on the floor. (since I
am renting that was a big deal to me...)

I'm not sure what type of setup you are striving for, but you could
easily
drop in a few more net cards on the internal side and subnet your private
address space. From there you could place your server on one subnet, and
workstations on the other. You could also use two router/firewalls and place
your server in the DMZ between the two routers. You may also be able to
replace the hub in my diagram with the linksys router in your setup to make
your LAN a little more efficient if the traffic count is high.

There are plenty more qualified network engineers on the list than me,
so if
this isn't what you need, post another question to the list and see what
comes back.

Good luck,

Ben

Dan,
 Currently I am not using a Linux Box but in the past I used Freesco. It
is a small Linux Distro that fits on a floppy. ALl you need is 16 MB(?) or
RAM
a 1.44 M Floppy and a motherboard to make it work. Keyboard and Monitor can
be removedd after setup. Check out http://www.freesco.org/ for more
information. It worked really well for me.
Thanks,
Ed

 How many use RR and have a router (Linksys) or do you use a computer
as a router? What are the pros and cons.

 Dont worry Cody but I dont have a free Linksys to give away, yet. Once I
obtain that Cisco 550 I have been trying to get back, then maybe I will swing
you a deal.

We use Linux boxes for routers here too as well as at our sattelite
location.
Ours are very solid. Cost is nearly nothing. Some time to make the box
with a 486 board and program the firewall or disc that you use.

Like the Mon says. We like 'em.

on one unit, a workstation on the other with Linksys router and server

Re: [luau] Configuring Router

2002-07-22 Thread Ben Beeson
Dan,

I have both I use the computer as a router and firewall for my
connection ot the internet, and a hub and wireless router on the inside for
parts of my LAN connection to the computer router.

Pros and Cons of using the computer as a router

con: I need an extra box and associated $$ to do it...
(although by
recycling old hardware, you can probably save a lot of $$)

pro: I get to use the MonMotha firewall, ssh and other goodies
on my
router.
   Only one IP address on outside interface

   Firewall box is separate from the rest of the LAN

Cheers,

Ben
