I agree pretty much on all this. On a amd-based laptop in pure alsa i was unable to figure out why - and how - hdmi always was the first (and default) sound card; with the obvious result there was no sound output in many applications. Only vlc worked because of its very detailed onfiguration options. But no sound in browser, mplayer etc. etc. With pulseaudio and pavucontrol i could sort that out. Indeed, a coherent sound settings manager (like network-manager or so) would be really very very nice! Indeed, checking the systeminfos with the classical cli tools, which are several different ones is not so easy if you're not dealing with any day. I've the same problem as you, i.e. to remember which one. But differently "inxi" is only one (it's a script i think) which does all and its totally easy to use (i learned it once when i installed and tried out crunchbang). One could even create a desktop application invoking something like "EXEC=lxterminal -e inxi" so you would have in the lxde/lubuntu menu as well. So, since now it is also in the debian repositories why not add it to the regular ubuntu repositories too and - eventually - put it into the lubuntu default setup (since for sure it's much more leightweight than all the other gui tools). My impression is: Since i installed kernel 3.2.0-4 *AFTER* the lubuntu install (which came with some kernel 3.12 or so) yaboot considers 3.2.0-4 as the neyou w one. When i choose "old", yaboot uses the 3.12 kernel. On my pb the 3.2.0-4 kernel is not overrun by upgrades, without any pinning. If you would like to be sure, that the old kernel is not upgraded you could use pinning (i'm unable to explain *HOW* precisely, look into the manuals). Eventually, it is sufficient just to *NOT* install the meta package but only the kernel and the headers (?). If you do not find (sorry, in this moment i've a very limited internet connection here, so i couldn't prove) a dwnload link wherefrom to download the ubuntu specific ppc kernels, you could also try with the debian kernels (you would not get the kernel with the ubuntu specific patches - in case of ppc not that much of a problem, imho). On a Samsung (with 8 gig ram) i already set swapiness to 10 (with the help of Samsung_Tools). I also removed zram because i think with that much of ram it's not really needed. The pb g4 has 2 gig of ram (which is good anyway). There, i did not touch anything. As for the dependencies: It's clear to me, that many dependencies are not "ram-sensitive", while they only take space on the hd. But often, at least to me, it's not clear if libraries that come with the dependencies are or are not needed by other applications (and calls), in certain circumstances. I'm under the impression, you have to be very deeply in to linux to fully - or only superficially - understand that ;) On the pb i chose - as i usually do - to have / and /home on different partitions. Unfortunately, the installer made an a little bit small root partition, so i try to remove all stuff i do not really need ;) BUT, as an example: On one hand lubuntu comes with network-manager which brings also gnome-bluetooth and on the other hand it installs blueman (IME preferrable, because it brings much less dependencies and it does the job perfectly may be even better :) ). What's about the combo blueman + wicd, possibly touching the icon set of wicd (personally, i'm a convinced user of ceni - but i'm aware that that isn't viable as a network manager for those new to linux. Another example, very often by dependencies there is installed yelp which in lubuntu, at least as far as i understand, is not needed. What i want to say is: I feel it might be a good idea to "clean" up the installation dependencies. Said that, i fully respect the big work of the people doing development, packaging and so on. And their limited time ... So, don't take this as a criticism rather than a wish, an extra "de luxe" ;) Cheers. -- Lubuntu-users mailing list Lubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lubuntu-users

lubuntu toolkit (?)
Just a thought: I'm trying to strip down as much as possible the environment for my powerbook (to keep it still functional in this times of large and ram eating applications). Now, i thought it would be nice, if lubuntu would offer something like a toolkit how to strip down - but keeoing the lubuntu look and feel. 1) To be able to do this i think one ...nice thing would be, to reduce as much as possible the dependencies (i notice that debian often has less dependencies than (l)ubuntu). I think i also understand the reason of certain dependencies from a point of a new to linux user. E.g., i do not see why gpicview is a dependency. If i try to remove it, even with 'apt-get remove --no-install-recommends' i tries to uninstall lots of other core apps. Same goes for network-manager ... 2) I experimented e.g. with tint2 instead of lxpanel and on my pb i'm able to have the same functionality (with some tricks) as lxpanel but with less use of ram. 3) A good explanation how to use pcmanfm without the desktop icon control. 4) Alternative window managers (?) (Personally i tried jwm but turned back to openbox since i don't see so much advantages. jwm is a bit faster (and very easy to configure -once you got the basics!), but for me the combo openbox/tint2 is less ram eating, more eye candy and also very fast). powerbook keyboard configuration
Hi you all! Is there out there someone, who could guide me - or point me to a good instruction - how to configure the (my - GERMAN!) powerbook keyboard, to have access to the 3rd level chars (like square- and programmer brackets, at-sign, Euro sign etc. pp.). I already tried 'dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration' but to no extent. From former - partly successful - attempts i'm aware of several problems i'd well like to avoid: If the key is configured to acess that 3rd level signs, i always lost *ALL* other shortcuts relaying on - like thru for console access and back as well as shortcut combinations in lubuntu/openbox. So, i'd prefer to have the right Apple/Window/Super_R key to work as 3rd level chooser. 'xmodmap' actually says: shift Shift_L (0x32), Shift_R (0x3e) lockCaps_Lock (0x42) control Control_L (0x25), Control_R (0x69) mod1Alt_L (0x40), Meta_L (0xcd) mod2Num_Lock (0x4d) mod3 mod4Super_L (0x85), Super_R (0x86), Super_L (0xce), Hyper_L (0xcf) mod5ISO_Level3_Shift (0x5c), Mode_switch (0xcb) Btw, which key or what is mod5? Moreover, is my understanding correct, that 'pcmanfm --desktop' is responsible for the desktop functions of lxde/lubuntu like icons on dsktop etc. (since openbox itself does not have such functions)? And is it also responsible for the wallpaper (like in former times it was feh, or nitrogen)? Or is the wallpaper a thing that relates to lightdm? Now, since the latest kernels 3.12 and higher and the newest catalyst driver that problem is solved, fortunately. In xev the XF86 keys are taken by xfce powermanagement (in the default lubuntu-rc.xml there are settings considering this case). If you uninstall it you get it in xev. But it seems to me that not only the XF86 keys are blocked but also xbacklight. These distros gllow easy access to the main Debian and Ubuntu repositories respectively, so you can pick and choose from the vat array of appications out there. Alternatively, you might look into the range of "Puppy" linuxes. crunchbang too, does not run on ppc (although i think it might be possible to get there by first installing debian wheezy and then adding the crunchbang repositories (but i'm not sure). What i would do is this: A) Debian Jessie (but downgrading the kernel to 3.2-04 until the dead sound problem in the newer kernels is not solved) with LXDE and the substitute openbox as windowmanager by jwm. B) Lubuntu 14.04 (also downgrade the kernel) and also substiting openbox by jwm. In both cases i've a working system with, among others, pcmanfm-desktop daemon, polipo, tor&vidalia, 2 conky processes (one for the weather forecast and one for systeminfos) xscreensaver, keepassx, blueman and autostart thunderbird to tray with around 200mb after finishing the boot procedure. The keyboard map was taken from here: http://www.seehuhn.de/pages/powerbook#keyboard (IMHO a very useful site for linux users on a mac). Precisily i took the "Xorg server key bindings for British, French (thanks, Yves-Alexis Perez) and German keyboards, using the XKB extension" Then i put the de.xkb file in the right place /etc/X11/xkb/de.xkb and added the statement to /etc/rc.local loadkeys /etc/X11/xkb/de.xkb Works like a charm (with some minor drawbacks: Alt is used, maclike as 3rd level chooser, which blocks e.g. from working like expected; i remapped that in the wm shortkey configurations to . The special keys are mapped to the pc like position; e.g. "@" is not on L but on Q. Not that much of a problem, though ;) )! Sorry for having you disturbed. Re: Lubuntu 14.04 ppc errors + JWM
I figured it out how to make work the setup correctly: I got the kernel 3.2.-04 from debian wheezy and, voilà, sound and even correct sleep mode (standby, suspend, you name it) is there. Till now, i did not notice any problem. (inxi shows the correct sound card:MacSoundSnapper). May be, i should pin the kernel to avoid an unvoluntary upgrade (?) In any case, i notice that yaboot seems to store the latest *INSTALLED* kernel as actual, not the newest (3.2 became default, 3.13 became old). It's a long time i did not fiddle anymore with yaboot ;) I still have to cofigure the keyboard (3rd level) correctly. @Israel Now, i'll try jwm. At a first glance it's really extremely speedy and i thought it might be possible to simply substitute openbox by jwm as the lxde window manager (in desktop.conf). Apparently that works. One point i've difficulties with is the font setting. May be you can pass me a tip how to get smaller fontsize in the menu, the systray and the window titels. I tried with xfontsel but frankly to no extent - whatever i chose. Fore sure, i'm missing there something ... As a filemanager personally i'd stick with pcmanfm, also because i'm not so interested in an icon "ornated" desktop (i'm rather used to use it as a background for conky :D ). Ok, sad but it's like this. But is it really necessary to downgrade all? Wouldn't it be possible to only use a "lower" kernel and "pin" it to be aware from unwanted upgrades up to when the sound problem is solved? Isn't there somewhere something like a "kernel pool" wherefrom one could try to install by hand an older one (and cross the fingers, that it might work? Re: lubuntu 14.04 ppc errors
Since i did not really understand, where and how to go better, for the ppc problems, for the moment i continue to post here: Aside all errors (and some others as well) i discovered that sound absolutely does notwork. So, i decided to erase the lubuntu-ppc and went to try a Debian Jessie. That worked by far better, frankly. But may be that's due to the fact i pretty much installed the desktop from scratch. Some things i noted: Eventhough outdated, i find that the installation of powerprefs (gui on top of pbbuttonsd) and pommed and gpomme helps to better control over Fn and special keys. I also found a neat instruction on ubuntuforums how to get - in debian - the ubuntulike fontrendering (one of the main (l)ubuntu advantages imho). All seamed to work fine so far ... BUT: Unfortunately, also in debian i'm unable to get sound. Here are the outputs (pretty much the same as in lubuntu 14.04-ppc): - - - ~# inxi -F System:Host: <> Kernel: 3.13-1-powerpc ppc (32 bit) Desktop: LXDE (Openbox 3.5.2) Distro: Debian GNU/Linux jessie/sid Machine: No /sys/class/dmi machine data: try newer kernel, or install dmidecode CPU: Single core 7447/7457 altivec supported (-UP-) cache: N/A clocked at 1333.33 MHz Graphics: Card: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] RV350/M10 [Mobility Radeon 9600 PRO Turbo] Display Server: X.org 1.15.1 drivers: fbdev, ati, radeon tty size: 80x24 Advanced Data: N/A for root Audio: Card Failed to Detect Sound Card! Since the sound is there in the PB - the startup chime works! -, seems to me that's a kernel problem. And, sincerely, without sound, a portable is not that much useful. For a headless server/router that might be fine anyway, but not for a laptop. So, may be one should downgrade the kernel? And if so, down to which one? (As far as i personally realized kernel < 3.2 had a working powermanagement - but would that be work together with lubuntu 14.04? Or is there out there someone, who has a solution? lubuntu 14.04 ppc errors
I sucessfully installed lubuntu 14.04 ppc. That's great. By far less great is the experience with. Below i list the errors i noticed at a first glance (the machine is a pb g4, 1,3 ghz + altivec with 2 gb ram): - Suspend does not work. It only blanks the screen and from that it's impossible to wake the pb up. - the restart in the logout menu of lubuntu does not work - does not work. And alot of other shortcuts as well. - The macintosh 3rd level chars are not accessable. I did a sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration (i tried as keyboard Apple and Apple Alluminium; may be i should try another one? Which?) - The combination of xkeyboardmap setting and ibus setting is somewhat confusing. Which overrules which one. (On an amd laptop i turned the ibus off with no harm, apparently ...). - Moving windows, even with low charged cpu is dead slow (the windows follow the grab like in slow motion (generally the pb is feeling absolutely not snappy; in comparison an even older and slower thinkpad feels like jet) - network manager works not correctly. I substituted it by ceni, which at least correctly recognizes the b43legacy (eventhough up to now, for some reason it does not store the settings and i have to configure it newly at any restart. -- Lubuntu-users mailing list Lubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lubuntu-users

But it's not really what i need. Actually, i'm mainly preoccupated for the samsung (on which i lost the passphrase). So, my question is: Is there a way to a) establish if encryption is active or not? b) to annulate the encryption (i think that might be possible for me, als logged in user, since i presume the passphrase is somewhere stored in the key; since i'm logging in automatically - as user. Encryption of installation - 2 questions
1. On a samsung whereto in installed lubuntu 13.10 (upgraded then by do-release-upgrade to 14.04) i chose encryption and i got someting like a 64 characters key. I wrote that down, as suggested. Do i understand correctly that the encryption is somewhat "silently" done? And the need of that key would only come up in case of some kind of "havary" of the hd? In any case, unfortunately, i lost that key by moving inside my house (very likely it ended in the poubelle :-( ). Now what should/could i do? Actually, i do not have any problem, i can access all my data and programs without any problem. But i would not like to have a bad experience in the future if/when there is going something wrong. 2. On the powerbook with a fresh lubuntu-ppc installation i chose encryption as well. But there before logging in i'm asked the pswd i gave in for the encription. Apparently there was no key generation (but may be i missed that, since i had no control *DURING* the installation (see my other msg)? Is that something new in 14.04 or is that a difference due to the specific of ppc? -- Lubuntu-users mailing list Lubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lubuntu-users

I'm pretty aware ;) On my other machines i tweaked firefox handishly (essentially following the suggestions of bodhizazen). My best setup is, as it appears to me also from testing with the specialized sites: Squid3 -> Privoxy -> Tor (cash completely off in the browser). With Noscript i'm having problems when it comes to view for example embedded videos in websites of newspapers. So i do not use its working around with Better Privacy, HTTPS-Everywhere and Request Policy (and lots of tweakings in the ff preferences as well). Privoxy too, does a lot (it's really a great tool). It was mo out of curiousity - and since flash in FF ppc does not exist anyway - i wanted to try out the tor bundle. I do not find frankly the torbutton as a single package (and seems to me that on their site the comuncate too the do not distribute it out of the bundle (?) -- Lubuntu-users mailing list Lubuntu-users@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lubuntu-users

Probably it was also useful i installed slim in place of lightdm (?). I did not try with the 14.04 iso (will do this monday or so). In any case, thought i owe you a big merci! May be i won't go to install in the end lubuntu but rather start from that existing installation to build a lubuntu similar setup based on fluxbox. I think i can use many of the settings i created to substitute openbox by fluxbox for a crunchbang waldorf i had running on a 12 years old thinkpad.
