[LUTE-BUILDER] Re: lute

2009-01-25 Thread Jon Murphy

Brod,

I think the most difficult part is getting started, my eight course has been
in progress for three years (no work on it for the last two due to moving
and a minor medical problem, the removal of a leg). I intend to get back to
it shortly. I have the ribs (bowl staves) made to thickness - I'd suggest
that the thickness planer might be a bit rough for the finishing cut, but
the experienced luthiers on the list will probably answer that. There are
several books/CDs on the topic - David van Edwards and the late (it is in my
bookshelf, but the name forgotten and I can't get to the bookshelf as I type
as I've taken my prosthetic leg off). Both seem to advocate an oversize
bandsaw cut of the ribs, then a planing to fit. Van Edwards gives you
templates in his package, but you should be able to draw them out if you
have a talent for 3D fitting. The mold, which can be skeletal or solid, is
your guide (I do have that made). It is not difficult, but it is exacting as
it will shape the body.

For my thicknesses I resawed on the bandsaw, then I tried both the
"Luthier's Friend" sanding device and the Wagner Saf-T-Planer - both on the
drill press. The final thickness probably should be with a cabinet scraper -
but the more experienced will comment on that, I only write this so as to
get their input when I restart my project. The Luthier's friend is a bit
expensive for what it is, but it does thickness exactly although leaving a
surface that has to be "skinned". The Wagner involves making a jig, but
leaves a nice surface.

This for what it is worth, ask me again in a year.

Best, Jon

  hello, everyone

what would be the most difficult part of building a six course lute. I
have an extensive wood shop. such as thickness planer, table saw,
jointer, bandsaw, hand planner and alot of other hand/power tools.
also, does one cut the bowl staves with a bandsaw?

Strange.

I had a similar problem when I went fire walking in my brogues.
Completely trashed them and my 'best' chinos caught fire. Bare feet and
shorts next time for me!!

Well it's tough being a lute player in California. I trust that for
David's gig they at least stayed on the feet- live performances and
restless shoe leather are suddenly becoming a real phenomenon, ripe
vegetables no longer in vogue apparently. I once had an event with
velcro sandal fasteners mid performance- one of my devoted auditors
pulled one off his foot; sounded exactly like the program being
ripped angrily in half. When it happened again from the other foot I
really had to wonder what was going on. Then a heavy glass mounted
picture crashed to the floor in the second half of the concert. Life
is still a bit wild out here in the West. DW

This morning's live radio was on internet as well:

In the first 15 minutes of chat show you can hear (and see!) me
accompany Music for a While (in F-minor), a Corpario duet and the
Dialogue on a Kiss.

Btw: does somebody know how I can download this to my PC?

David - had a Bach cantata in E-major (recits C-sharp minor!) in the
afternoon; quite a trip: from 4 flats to four sharps!

Hi, all,
In answer to Edward's question, I started on guitar (Delta blues, as a
matter of fact), moved to lute, then back to guitar, with mandolin
thrown in. Right now I play mainly guitar, several styles, but I'm
currently mostly interested in turn of the century (19th to 20th)
American guitar and early Hawaiian guitar. My lute interest right now
is largely vicarious; my instrument needs some work. I also play
shamisen, sanxian, and gu qin (for which I envy your Singapore
location!) for the pluckies, and some Asian flutes.
Chris.

I'd be really interested to know how many on the lute list are also
guitarists or have been at some time. Not disputing Mr Posner's
statistic, but merely curious.

I started off on lute, without ever having touched guitar before, and
even now if I ever have to twiddle on a guitar, I have to mentally
play the 'ok, everything is a minor third lower) game.

Anyone else *not* a guitar player?

This JPC.de site also seem to have an unusually wide selection of
other lute recordings with sound samples.
For example there seem to be four CDs taken from the Bis recording in
1994 of Lindberg's Dowland:
The original Bis recording at EUR 39,99
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/hnum/7384910?

Brilliant reeidition at EUR 12,99

as well as the SACD only Bis SACD at EUR 19,99
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/hnum/8584187?

and then the extracts from the Bis recording at EUR 19,99
http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/hnum/7924514?
rk=home&rsk=hitlist
I wonder whether the cheap Brilliant version is up to the original
Bis standard. I suppose they will have cut the cost, by reducing
notes, etc.

They seem to have a very wide catalogue of lute recordings not so
often seen on other sites, and often with sound samples.
However, entering 'lute' in the search field does give more guitar
than lute recordings
