[LUTE] Re: See through soundboard?
Dear Herbert, There is an extraordinary photo of Chris Wilson on the back of the booklet As I recall that was a Naxos CD, I have it somewhere. My understanding is that is was a standard photographers flood light backlighting the whole scene. Cant hurt to try it, provided you minimize the time the lute is exposed to the intense infra-red heat source. Might be those new-fangled light bulbs would work as well with much less heat. -- Dana Emery To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
[LUTE] Re; See through soundboard
Herbert, You are better off soldering one of those very bright LED's (or several) to a stiff set of wires. Both the wires and LED fit through the rosette and can be positioned right next to the braces near the soundboard. I make a template out of sheet aluminum with a hole smaller than the selected rosette hole, so the rosette is not touched during this procedure. The template is taped to the top. In a dark room, this method can spot loose braces and can measure both the thickness and height of a brace, by it's shadow. With the LED, you don't run the risk of burning the top, or electrocution. They are getting those little USB cameras smaller and smaller. Soon maybe you could put a USB camera through a rosette hole. Dear Herbert, There is an extraordinary photo of Chris Wilson on the back of the booklet of his 'Fantasia de mon triste' CD showing his lute with a strong backlight where you can see that effect. In that particular case the light is clearly shining through the back of the lute and still illuminating the inside of the soundboard. However, it won't work with every lute as only some of the woods used for ribs are that translucent Best wishes, Denys -Original Message- From: lute-...@cs.dartmouth.edu [mailto:lute-...@cs.dartmouth.edu] On Behalf Of Herbert Ward Sent: 22 July 2010 17:45 To: lute@cs.dartmouth.edu Subject: [LUTE] See through soundboard? If I arranged a 120 watt light at the rosette, and and shielded it so the rest of the room was as dark as possible, would I be able to see silhouetted braces through the wood of the soundboard? Dear Stephen, How nice to hear from you! It's great to know how that effect worked. Thinking about this subject put me in mind of the recent photos on your website showing light shining through a lute back, but even those don't show quite the intensity that's apparent in that photo. So it's not an effect many of us will be able to replicate... Hope you are both keeping well busy! Hi Denys, that lute is made of ivory, which is why the effect works . . . I replaced its soundboard, back in 1983, I think. Stephen.
