Yes, I noticed that also.

My cheap 25€ webcam with built in stereo mic ist great.

Stereo mics can cancel noise, that's probably why the quality is surprising.

Compared to my TASCAM it isn't even that bad for lute recordings either.

I was extremely surprised.

anyway?) in the iMac gives better results than the fancy mic +
interface. Go figure.
Home recordings is another story.

Why don't you just get a webcam with a mic? They are cheap and useful
   for lessons. Giving or taking?

There is system I just learned about today called String Masters. This
is set up so you can see and annotate scores as well as see and hear
   the teacher and students.

I quite like the Samson Meteor USB Condenser: Pretty cheap, good sound,
looks cool ;-)

Thanks Ralf and Miles. The Zoom recorder is more than I need and more
expensive. I was thinking in the ~$25 - $50 range. Perhaps the Yeti that
Milres recommended.

Define "relatively inexpensive". All Zoom recorders can be used as USB
microphones/audio
interfaces. I use a Zoom H4. As a nice side effect you can use them without
a computer,
recording to a SD disk.

 Hope that helps,
