If you compress anyways, why not put any referred to pictures, bib files and so on into the archive? That would be a natural extension... I really don't want to bloat my text files by appending that over and over again... And of course there's also the problem of file system, as currently your input files can be spread all over your disk, even on network drives. Just some quick thoughts: Hmm, maybe not on an image-by-image basis. I'd rather like a special save-option 'save as complete document', where everything - including all external parts - is saved in one tar/zip/whatever archive. This would/should then also change all the reference paths in the document so that everything is located within one (sub)directory. A 'standard' save should not touch the paths within the document. I am using LyX 1.2.1 and I have activated 'german.kmap' as primary
keymap. This gives me a qwertz-layout on an american keyboard, i.e.,
pressing 'y' gives 'z', ';' gives german umlaut-o (ö), prime (')
german umlaut-a (ä). Everything works fine except the capital
umlaut-A (Ä), which should lie on SHIFT-prime, which is the double
quote. The entry in german.kmap says correctly
\kmap \ \\\{A}
However trying to enter it fails and only the double quote is printed.
lyx -dbg 68 tells when pressing first the prime, then the double quote:

I was just trying to convert the translated german docs to HTML, so I
can put them on the web. I'm using latex2html (originally an older
version from 99, but I suspected it to be too old and installed the
latest version from August - same error).
It bails out on footnotes, they are inserted in the running text as
typeset@protect @@footnote SF@gobble@opt text_of_footnote
by examining the tex file I found out that the \footnote command had
been re-defined:

Some more issues I noticed (probably already found but someone else, but I didn't follow the list lately) - The window titles of the 'Select Database' and 'Select BibTeX Styles' file dialogs are not translatable - same seems to be the case for the File-Import-NoWeb menu entry - A strange thing happens in the Math panel: When I first open it, the 'close' button ist correctly translated to 'Schließen' (with the hook-arrow behind), but when I open one of the subdialogs, the button of this subdialog says 'Close' (without the hook), and when I close it, now also the button of Math Panel has changed to 'Close' (but with the hook). I looked for all 'close' in the pot-file, but there are no untranslated ones... - A small typo: #: src/frontends/xforms/FormCitation.C:211 msgid Activate if you want to print all authors in a reference with more than three authors, and not \First Author et.al.\ (Natbib). Failing that they will need to enlarge their dialogs to 133% of default size (mainly in the horizontal direction) since they are getting the wrong fonts. Hm, my screen setup should be OK. I.e., with long texts the bug can be triggered even with correct settings. As it looks you should be able to also crash the english version by just choosing a large font - maybe then a more general solution is preferable. I was using a \cite command in the caption of a float figure and got an error: ! Argument of \@caption has an extra }. inserted text \par l.161 shape.} putting a \protect (LaTeX code) in front of the citation cured the problem. I think LyX could/should take care of that... (*) at least the one that I am using, from aabib.sty which is used quite a lot in astronomy. Hi, Just testing the latest CVS version of 1.1.6. Using the external inset (in my case a xfig figure) leaves empty files in the tmpdir. On exit LyX complains that it cannot remove the tempdir because it's not empty. Wrong PostScript in LyX Doc?
Hi Folks, I got an email from someone experiencing problems when trying to view (or convert to PDF) de_UserGuide.ps (I offer the PS-files on my WWW-page). It turned out that the trouble stems from the included EPS-figures: They contain the line %%Begin Data: without further parameters, which both the NT Ghostscript and Acrobat Destiller did not like. He manually edited the PostScript source to %%BeginData: Number Hex Lines with the following values for Number: mobius.eps 450 escher-lsd.eps 2571 platypus.eps4212 I don't know whether ImageMagick (which was obviously used to write the eps files) creates wrong eps or the NT-programs are too picky. I edited the eps-files to include the above change and checked that it still works here (Linux, GhostScript 5.50, gv 3.5.8). Maybe someone knows better which is the correct PostScript. Anyhow, I include the small patch here, in case you want to apply it. Wrong PostScript in LyX Doc?
Hi Folks, I got an email from someone experiencing problems when trying to view (or convert to PDF) de_UserGuide.ps (I offer the PS-files on my WWW-page). It turned out that the trouble stems from the included EPS-figures: They contain the line %%Begin Data: without further parameters, which both the NT Ghostscript and Acrobat Destiller did not like. He manually edited the PostScript source to %%BeginData: Hex Lines with the following values for : mobius.eps 450 escher-lsd.eps 2571 platypus.eps4212 I don't know whether ImageMagick (which was obviously used to write the eps files) creates wrong eps or the NT-programs are too picky. I edited the eps-files to include the above change and checked that it still works here (Linux, GhostScript 5.50, gv 3.5.8). Maybe someone knows better which is the correct PostScript. Anyhow, I include the small patch here, in case you want to apply it. I still have the plain fix2 version. Found it there in line 2466 - I

You might like to confirm this is the same '\n' that is causing you
trouble by doing '\n' = %LineNumber\n and checking the output.

Hi there,
is there a specific reason that LyX inserts empty lines in some cases?
The one that bites me most is the float figure environment, where the
LaTeX output looks like this:
\begin{figure*}
\resizebox*{1\columnwidth}{!}{\includegraphics{fig2.eps}}
\caption{\label{histogram}Histogram of time-averaged distances of the
INW (solid line) and OUT (dotted line) PGs from the center of the
umbra. The position of the dividing line is marked by vertical dashes.}
\end{figure*}
While this normaly produces working output, the text class I'm using
defines a special command \sidecaption that allows putting the caption
besides a figure. It should be used as
\begin{figure*}
\sidecaption
\includegraphics{...}
\caption{...}
\end{figure*}
However, if I put it as ERT in my LyX document, due to the two blank
lines in the tex file latex bails out:
! Paragraph ended before \sidecaption was complete.
Is there a way to make LyX *not* insert those blank lines? Or why are
they there?

aa.layout (more general question)
Hi there,
I'm working on the update of aapaper.layout (now aa.layout) which
brought me to a more general question regarding the layout files:
What should happen if the underlying textclass file changes? Especially
when the changes in the .cls file are not backward compatible?
In the current case (aa.cls), one command was removed, another one was
changed from an environment to a command.
Now I see the following possibilities:
1 Just rename the layout file ('til now it was aapaper, new one will be
aa like the name of the class). Drop any support for the old style
file.
2 create a new aapaper.layout that includes the new one and adds some
warning.
3 Keep the old aapaper style as an additional option.
I first wanted to go way 2, but that will most probably end up in valid
LyX documents that cannot be processed (latex will complain about the
missing command) if the current version of the style file is installed.
Way 3 leaves a lot of unnecessary LyX files, IMHO. It might be an
option for people that want to keep both versions of the style files
installed. Don't know if anyone would do so.
Way 1 requires the user to manually (either in an text editor or from
within LyX) edit the files before she can process it.
I'd be happy to get some inspiration

LyX. As soon as you do a reformat-paragraph in an external editor, the
above ends up as

and the footnote is gone :-(

Hi! one bug I just stepped across: I try to select some text in a table cell using shift+Cursor movement. The first time I use it in a table cell after entering it, it always selects from the beginning of the cell, regardless where I am. I have to release the shift key, do (at least) one step left and then start selecting again with Shift+Cursor_right. (Moving right without selecting does not work - it starts again at the beginning after that) (I hope the description is clear enough to reproduce). LyX/LaTeX using the wrong tex file
Hi all, I just discovered a strange/anoying bug (LyX 1.6.1fix1): I have configured LyX to use the temporary directory. That works fine, while LyX is running I can find there all the tex and dvi files. BUT: If in the directory where the .lyx file resides also a tex file exists, that one is used by latex, not the one in the temp dir. If I delete that tex file, all works again and the file in the temporary directory is used. But that is standing in the tex-file that should be texed (i.e. the one

So, does latex change the file it is reading after it already started
doing so? Sounds funny to me. But then, I have no real idea about
LaTeX (thanks to LyX, that is ;^).
The problem is that I do not see a good way to avoid that.
Well then I'll have to keep it in mind. But I see quite some problems
arising from that, e.g. from people who exchange LaTeX-files with others
that do not (yet) use LyX.

It was my fault (sort of): It's related to TEXINPUTS. It was set to /home/pit/TeX//: (two slashes means search the whole tree - didn't know that), and with this setting my tex dir had higher priority than the current working directory. setting TEXINPUTS to :/home/pit/TeX// cures the problem. Probably starting latex with the full path name of the tex file would be a solution? It was set to /home/pit/TeX//: (two slashes means search the whole tree - didn't know that), and with this setting my tex dir had higher priority than the current working directory. setting TEXINPUTS to :/home/pit/TeX// cures the problem. Probably starting latex with the full path name of the tex file would be a solution? Hi, I just finished the translation of the 1.1.6 UI stuff, and during testing if everything works I found some bugs/glitches: This one first, as it is able to crash LyX: In Layout-Documentclass; If you use the Keyboard shortcut M-c to open the class selection dialog, the wrong dialog opens: Not the arrow-down list, but one like the other selections, with a wireframe "Class" and nothing else. This seems to be no problem in the english version, but if a i18n version is used, LyX crashes with a SIGSEGV if I press ENTER. There are some other menues with arrow-down lists that behave like that if you open them with keyboard shortcuts. Translation of long sentences: As soon as the original english sentence was longer than 1 line in the po-file, the translation is ignored. This happens (mostly) in the tips of the preferences dialog. Also, if the original sentence was one line but the translation is longer, the line is not wrapped but is clipped at the window border. Some of the "Browse..." Buttons in the preferences dialogs are .. strange. Nothing happens if I put the mouse cursor over them in the english version, but (at least) for the german version, in the help area the first "" entry from de.po (which is the Project ID etc. stuff) is displayed. The tooltips for the toolbar are not translatable!? They seem to be in the po-file (coming from LyXAction.C - are those the tooltips?) but always only the english ones are displayed. Hi all! (I have been kicked off the list due to some mailer problems - don't know if that one already has been reported) I can reproducibly crash lyx 1.1.5fix1 when I try to cun'n'paste something from LyX to another application. Hi all! Using the weekend to work on the update of the german docs, I stepped across some more bugs in LyX 1.1.5pre3. Don't know wether some of them have already been reported, nevertheless here they go: 1 Something is strange with the tabulars. In de_Extended.lyx I had a table (end of chapter 3.5.3.1) that used to work the last time I TeXed the file. Now it choked with "illegal unit of measure", obviously because I did not specify a cell width for some of the cells. It seems the old format (as I understand, it has changed at some point) is not imported correctly. I tried to change the cell widths (which did work) but detected some more weirdness: The table had multi line entries, and the old format did specify the width in all lines. The old cell widths are still in the file after I changed them, but I cannot access them via the standard table layout dialog. I'll attach the table definition file. 2 something similar with the 'Floatflt' option in layout-paragraph-ExtraOpt: After viewing that menu in a paragraph where the option is set, the radio button will be activated in all other paragraphs, too. The file is processed without errors, nothing shows up in the lyx file. 3 Table layout dialog, entry 'width': as soon as a "valid entry" is typed in, any keypress will end the input, i.e. it does accept the entry and does a focus-out. This is *extremely* anoying if you have e.g. an entry "3cm" that you want to change to "3.25cm": Typing the "." already throws you out of the entry field, you have to mouse-click to enter it again, then press "2" which throws you out again 4 The new export-selection to other applications (*very* cool BTW!): I am using Steak (an en-de translation program, http://www.tm.informatik.uni-frankfurt.de/~razi/steak/steak.html) which also has a nice gtk interface.
