That's probably a matter of reading the docs, but that sucks. I went to the aspell docs and get referred to the pspell docs. They are copius and probably tell me what I need to know, but there should be a default config. Three Thumbs Down. No Smiley. This is because babel has all this entries. I am in the process of
cleaning this up, and in my cvs tree it is just
{ "frenchb", N_("French"), false, &iso8859_1 },
{ "french", N_("French (GUTenberg)"), false, &iso8859_1 },
This is because we have the babel french option and also the
french.sty package, which is a bit different. These should be
associated to the same dictionary, anyway.

I downloaded the german directory and installed the needed files in
/usr/share/aspell/german.dat

/usr/lib/aspell/german
Following the INSTALL explanations.
In init_spellchecker... I did:
PspellConfig * config = new_pspell_config();
-> string code;
-> (void)split(lang, code, '_');
-> config->replace("language-tag", code.c_str());
spell_error_object = new_pspell_manager(config);
But now aspell keeps telling me:
I'm sorry I can't find any sutable word lists for language-tag "de"
Any idea?

Also the county code should only be used when a particular language string is specific for a particular country. You want to use the ISO Code2 for the country codes when it is needed. BTW: Pspell will currently ignore the country code so the Canadian dictionary won't work quite yet. After adding a canadian line to language .C, I spell checked a document that had been telling me that colour was wrong and suggested color. It now accepts colour and rejects color, so I guess it is finding the canadian dict. after all. I also tried initialize and initialise to be sure I was not getting GB spelling. Garst

I had to make the change in the attached diff to language.C.
This lets aspell work. Kevin says pspell will still not work, but will
be fixed in his next release.
There are probably other changes needed. I have obtained the ISO
language and country codes and will peruse the list.
