so slow...

2000-04-28 Thread Nicolas Constans

Hi everybody,

I have installed LyX at home on a PC. It works great.
I have installed LyX at work on a AIX 4.3.2 system, to which I am
connected via an X terminal. It is horribly slow. Especially delete
character can really take a while.
Does anybody know why it is so, and eventually how it could be better?

Many thanks,
Nicolas.

I'm using LyX with a X terminal me too (NCD HMX), but under Sun Soloris
2.7.
I've never seen something like that and I don't think that came from
LyX.
IS it the same thing when you use Lyx on the console ?

How much your AIX system is loaded ?
Your local network can be also saturated !
What kind of window manager do you use ?

I'd like to express my thankfulness to Mr. Jean-Marc Lasgouttes
who spent a lot of time to help me use koma-script (which is great).

We have discovered that the shame was on our LaTeX installation here,

Koma-script will help me turn TeXies into LyXies, I hope.
And add more newbies to the list (niark)

Thanks also to the other faithfull contributors.

The problem is that there is no such things as gettext people. When
you ask on bug-gnu-utils about gettext, Ulrich Drepper says that he is
still maintining gettext, but any patch you send (I tried, and Steven
van Dijk reported this exact problem a while ago) goes into a
blackhole.

The most up to date gettext is to be found in packages like fileutils,
which maintainers try to fix gettext as needed. We should maybe take
this instead of gettext 0.10.35. It does not fix the cygwin problem,
though.

Lars> Then send the patch to them too.

The problem is that the patch cannot be applied as is, since one
should not condition on architecture. So a better fix has to be
designed, by somebody who knows what's going on and what is portable.
It would be probably better to condition on the existence of O_BINARY,
but even that may be unsafe.

I know how to accomplish this by the long and arduous method (doing it

The solution will be very spesific to the file you have, so it not
possible to answer this generally.

But you might be able to do it with sed, awk or perl.

Hello,

We already had some reports about that in the past, and I seem to
remember that LyX used a lot of network bandwidth for the cursor
blinking feature. Unfortunatley, since nobody who had this problem was
able to look at it closely, it never got fixed.

You you just want one font for serif and one for sans serif (to replce
TeX ones), it is pretty easy. On the other hand, using an arbitrary
number of fonts in a document is a bit more difficult.

Formula Formating seems to act microsofty sometimes...

2000-04-28 Thread Bruce Lavoie

Greetings,

I am runnning Lyx 1.1.4-fix3 on my linux box. This software is awsome,
M.S. Word does not even come close to the power of Lyx. My problem is
that sometimes when I reopen my document some of my formulas, for
example a summation with upper and lower limits, needs to be
reformatted. The upper and lower limts seem to slip down into an almost
"in-line" mode style. I then have to look at all my equations and use
the "alt-m l" option to get them back up on the top. Does anyone know
why this is happening? Since I have many integrals and summations in my
thesis I need a better way to fix this problem.

best Regards and thanks in advance,

find and replace with bold

2000-04-28 Thread Shawn Koons

I am working on a legal outline in the report class. It is very
important to distinguish between the words "shall", "will", "may", and
certain others.

Is there a way to do a find and replace of a word and only change the
style? I need to BOLD two or three separate words (each occur 100's of
time in the outline.

I have tried to use a text editor, but it won't allow me to replace one
word with something using two lines.

E.g.,

I want to bold the word may:(something like this)

FROM:

/series defalt
may

TO:

\series bold
"may"

Docbook & configure

2000-04-28 Thread Gerard W. Patterson

Hi All,

I noticed a few postings back someone with the same problem I had: Lyx
configure couldn't find docbook.

I also noticed the reply stating that it might work in the next
prerelease or in the version in CVS. I have since downloaded both of
them but I guess the code isn't in. I read through the output of the
configure scripts on both files and find:

checking for SGML-tools 1.x (LinuxDoc)... (sgml2lyx)
+checking for "sgml2lyx"... yes
checking for SGML-tools 2.x (DocBook)... (sgmltools)
+checking for "sgmltools"... no

>From the "no" I would guess it didn't find it.

I have docbook installed in:
/usr/lib/sgml (at least that is where the .dtd file is and there is a
sub directory called docbook-3.0) here as well.

Any ideas?

Thanx for any info.

LyX 1.1.5pre1 and Document Layout: SGML (DocBook article)

2000-04-28 Thread Friedemann Baitinger

it's been a while when I last tried to convert an old Linux Mini-HowTo
to SGML using LyX. I figured I'd give it another shot with this new
prerelease but no luck so far. When I open a new document with nothing
in it and do a 'File->View dvi' nothing happens as expected, however, as
soon as I change the 'Layout->Document->Class' to 'SGML (DocBook
article)' and then do a 'File->View dvi' I immediately get an alert
pop-up stating a 'There were errors during the LaTeX run -- one error
detected -- you should try to fix it'. No errors are highlighted in the
document (obviously since there is nothing in it).

On the text console I see a message showing up:

sh: none: command not found

Any ideas? BTW: View Postscript doesn't work either and FWIW: exporting
to SGML seems to work nicely.

Are there any prerequisites to run this new version LyX, any
dependencies which I may have overlooked?

Still problems

First thanks for everyone who has tried to help but things are still

A brief update.

Spelling problem --

Claus Hentschel was kind enough to update the port so that the lyxrc file
speller setting was recognized. I tried to run aspell (site
http://aspell.sourceforge.net/ file aspell-.30win32-i386.zip ). Aspell
does start to run. It just looks up the LyX system. Time for the three
finger salute. Does anyone have aspell running on the Win95 port?

ReLyX problem

Jean-Marc Lasgouttes <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> helped solve the \d
error. Change line 95 from \documentclass to \\documentclass. But it
still does not run. The error:

my $realpath = fastcwd();
chdir($cwd)  || die "Cannot chdir back to $cwd:$!";
$realpath;

1; # return "true" to the wrapper

What is this trying to do? Maybe there is a path error. Whatfile does it
want to see?

One interest note, 4spell will check a *.lyx document ( out of lyx). It
flags a few commands but thats why there is an ignore command. If a full
list of command were avalible a 4spell ignore file could be created.

Any thoughts on how I can fix the rest of these error?
