Karten. Das Problem ist bekannt...

french selects the french option of the babel package, don't know what
it does besides the hyphenation stuff.
Here I have the GUTenberg french.sty package, which is called instead
the default french names of the table of contents, bibliography, etc. are
selected and can be tuned in the preamble among many other
french typographic fine tunings.

As for the LyX window, here is attached the stdfrench.inc file
that I use to francise the appearance of the LyX window (what is not
tuned by the locale).

Well, since the AMS does not publish reports per se, there is no

Re: tabular formatting

2000-05-02 Thread Juergen Vigna

Hello Thomas!

I had a look at your file and the notes you wrote me and this is the
solution:

1. When using multirow-cells and you want linebreaks activated you have
to pay attention that ALL "multirow" cells in that row have linebreaks
activated AND the same numbers of rows (look at the second row in the
   attachement)

2. When using multirow without linebreaks you should use a hypenation point
(Special Char) to tell LaTeX where you want your word hypanated and not
do this by hand as this produces the wrong results.

So have a look at the modified example and let me know if this works!

Greets Jürgen

P.S.: I'm using lyx-1.1.5cvs so you may have problems loading the files
with older versions because of the \protected_separator.

No, there aren't new dependencies. It was my mistake, I haven't added
the automatic configuration, I forgot it.

Please add the following lines to your lyxrc file:

#
# LINUXDOC SECTION ###
#

# If you want to pass extra flags to the LinuxDoc sgml scripts, insert them
# here.

# Command to convert a docbook file to html
#\docbook_to_html_command "sgmltools -b html"

# Command to convert a docbook file to pdf
#\docbook_to_pdf_command ""

### end

Uncomment (removed the leading #) the lines that apply to you. Notice that
now it will possible to use other docbook distributions besides sgmltools v2.
After the configuration code this will work out of the box with suse, red hat,
and possibly sgmltools-lite (v3 of sgmltools).

RSN, I will add the code that does the detection during reconfigure.

Notice that now it will be possible to export the lyx-docbook document directly
to html. AS well as use personal stylesheets to configure your output.

Igonre the pdf part, for now, as I'm expecting the lyx-latex backends to support
it to add it to docbook.

Question about future functionalities

2000-05-02 Thread Pierre Ferraud

Hello,

I will wish to propose to my students a software for scientific edition

in WYSIWYG (or WYSIWYM...;)). I find LyX wonderful compared to what

exists, but I have a little question.

Is it envisaged, before October 2000, to include the following

functionalities :

- The displaying (on the screen) of the whole of the symbols of AMS

(currently, the pallet of displayable symbols is rather restricted)

- The functionality ABOVE/BELOW which allows, for example, to write the

arrow of an equation in chemistry (arrow with text above).

Thank you very much and best regards.

Hi,

I had the same problem like you. I'm using SuSE 6.3. I solved the
problem by
installing the sgmltools V2 and put their bin directory before the bin
where
my sgmltools V1 are installed together with docbook. After this the
configure script recognized my sgmltools V2 and docbook also.

Hope this helps.

Hallo Herbert !
As you've said before, the linebreak option has
been activated and I hit the crtl-enter buttons at
the end of every line.
Unfortunately the result wasn't satisfying, so I
vanished the linebreak option again and the text-
distribution was looking somehow better !? But
after all this is finally not the wanted result !
So I'm in search of other options for formatting
the table afterwards that means: with more
individual controll for text-distribution in
single cells ! (note: As I've noticed the
text-formatting within a table is line-
orientated, so every line within a cell is
corresponding with the same level line in the cell
beside. This causes some curious text-appearance
with/or without linebreak-option and ctrl/enter to
me !)
Just for make it sure, now I'm not talking about
Lyx but the text-appearance after formatted by
LaTeX !

I guess the only thing we can do is not having a blinking cursor, but this
is hard to test if one cannot see the behaviour.

Greets Jürgen

P.S.: You could try to disable cursor-blinking in the source and recompile
and run it and see if its better ( I guess not as this affects LyX
only if it's idle while you are typing this does not affect a lot)

As I tried to explain before, with or without the
linebreak-option activated and crtl. /enter-option
the text-distribution isn't very satisfying. That
means in some cells everything is nice, but in
other cells special signs and relating text are
seperated. After all the readability of the table
suffers a lot from that !
For example:
the sign (-),(symbolising nothing/not/excluding),
should stay with the relating term but in some
cells this doesn't take place. They are unwantedly
seperated.
I think one have to see the testfile using gv to
see what I am talking about !

I have seen the same thing when using LyX using an AIX 3.2 workstation as
an X terminal.

LyX launched directly on that machine yields no problems.

The load is very, very low

So the ispell problem has been solved now ;-)

Here again a first questions concerning the relyx problem so we can
(hopefully) again solve the problem step by step:

What is the reason NOT to use /usr/local/perl from the CygWin port? I am
using that version and relyx will do the job fine!

Do you call relyx from within LyX or from a shell/command.com window?

Hello,

Which OS are you running? Some version of OSF/1 (==digital unix==tru64
unix)? I guess you have several versions of the xpm libraries on your
system. The right one has been found when compiling, but then at run
time, the loader decided to use the other one :(

That's probably a configuration problem of your system, but with more
information, it will probably be possible to work around it.

there is an evident answer to this. It's name is LyX.

LyX is wisiwyg (or so), VERY easy to use and can cope with linux doc,
docbook and direct html (with tth, latex2html or hevea).

there is only a drawback : lyx is a small team effort and not supported
enough. So the installation of lyx is a bit awkward. One must have LaTeX,
sgmltools v1 (for linux doc) sgml tools v2 (for docbook, don't seems to
install properly with SuSE) and hevea (good and free).

LyW is a free, nearly gpl (a little library problem), very fast and light,
runs on linux (of course) and any unix machine (perhaps), even on windows.

I vote for LyX to be the recommended LDP editor, and for a small help to
the lyx team. This could be a priority job, not very difficult.

this is much easier than any other word processor (I'm sorry, emacs is a
wonderfull editor but a poor word processor - but any body can use it, of
course)

That reminds me, I seem to remember hearing about a conversion of LyX
from XForms to GTK+. Did I imagine this, or is it true?

I'd be willing to learn GTK and help code for that goal.

Even better -- the LyX people are working on making LyX GUI-independant.
I'm personally looking forward to a Palm version ('cause that would be

I'm sure that would be useful. Of course, learning LyX coding would
probably be more immediately and generally useful.

Lyx with a Vi-like interface? *That* would be my app-from-heaven. I should
probably be taking something for that.

DocBook sgml problems

2000-05-02 Thread Bruce Richardson

I'm finding problems with the DocBook sgml exported by Lyx (1.1.4-fix3).
Two examples:
 - or the Code environment. Lyx won't let me type "as is" -
i.e. as many spaces as I need to line things up. This is inconvenient since
the sgml tag is the only DocBook equivalent to the
tag from LinuxDoc. I need this to get an ascii directory tree to line up
and right now I'm having to rewrite that bit in Vi everytime I export the
html.

Quotes, tildes and square brackets. Lyx is exporting these as &ldquo,
&tilde and &lsqb but DocBook needs the actual characters. In other words,
&ldquo is shown as "&ldquo" in a DocBook document.

Is anybody else finding these problems or is there something wrong with my
set-up.

2000-05-02 Thread Sheldon F. Oppenheim

Perl is installed at //C/usr/local/perl/

The executable is in //C/usr/local/perl/bin/

This is reflected in my path statement (c:\usr\local\perl and
c:\usr\local\perl\bin) Further, I changed reLyXmain.pl (1st line) to
reflect this. I also changed the first line of reLyX (found in the
//C/apps/lyx114/bin) to reflect this path. If I use just the path reLyX
will not run. If just reLyX is changed then I get permission denied.
When both changes are made then the previous error is generated (found in
other postings).

As for the version of perl, I use active perl 5.6 build 613 found at

http://www.activestate.com/ActivePerl/download.htm.

That's all the info I have.

pod2lyx importer

2000-05-02 Thread Richard D. Jackson

I posed this question over on the dev list but got very little response
so I thought I would see what kind of response I could get on the user
list.

I'm in the process of creating a format converter that will convert pod
( Perl plain old documentation ) to LyX. Actually I just about have a
base package ready that supports most stuff.

The question I posed was whether anyone besides myself would use it or
would find it useful.

So how about it would any of you find this type of tool useful?

I ask this because I want to know if I should spend the time to polish
it up a bit. If I'm the only person that finds this useful then there is
really no need for me to spend the time to document and clean the code
up. But if others find it useful then I will need to do that.

Also on a side note I'm also considering doing these things as well:

1) A lyx2pod format converter - actually this one will be more work but
I will find it useful.
2) rtf2lyx ( rich text format to LyX ) format converter. And maybe the
other way around as well.

Again if you think any of these would be useful let me know.

Thanks
Richard

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply. My OS system is DIGITAL UNIX V4.0F. Since
I sent the e-mail I was able to work around the bug (but still was not able
to run lyx ...) by compiling xpm and putting the files libXpm.a and
libXpm.so.4.7 in the directory
/home/ophelia/eldad/usr/lib
and then writing
setenv $LD_LIBRARY_PATH .:/home/ophelia/eldad/usr/lib:/freeware/shlib:/usr/local/shlib
however when I tried to run lyx I got an 'IOT trap'. So I wonder whether
this is related again to the xpm library or the IOT trap is unrelated, how
can I find out?
Thanks again,
Eldad.

It's quite easy to build up a amsreport.cls class from the standard report
class, add any needed commands in the file, define the corresponding
layout. The amount of ERT needed depends on the work on the layout file,
but if the idea is to avoid the preamble and load files from templates,
(accepting ERT), it may work in a couple of minutes.
The Companion is a good entry to get info about cloning an existing class.

What is exactly the idea compared to pod2html ? Did you try
pod2html -> html2latex -> relyX ?
I think it is interesting if it increases the level of segmentation of the
actual perl doc: I have indexed the html version of the standard Perl doc
but this is not very efficient beccause the element of info may be quite
big (think of builtin functions e.g.); of course this is not tru for
a geat number of small packages or modules.

The rtf-> anything conversion is generally hopeless (up to my own experience)
because you generally don't control the level of WYSIWYG used in the
text processor which created it. Just have a look at any HTML export
and consider the bunch of and   inside :-)
(and I just don't mention what happens with formulas)

The lyx->rtf (and what is behind) can be solved to a reasonable extent
throuh html export, because lyx->HTML is quite efficient (apart from the math
problem), but this has already been discussed in the list.

It's a bit hard to see what goes wrong when not haveing the undelining image
of the tabular. Could you send a test-file and tell us what exactly you don't
like with the formating. I admit that there ARE problems with formating of
multiline cells in tabulars, which I could fix with some tricks but in this
case LaTeX is very picky :) and you have to see it by example.

Well I see a few problems when viewing the file, but you still didn't tell
me which are the problems for you in the example file you sent:

Row X Column Y: The formating should be like you see it in LyX, but it does
format it in "this" wrong mode.
