trouble error

2000-12-14 Thread Chris Schulbert

Hi!

I'm using LyX on my Desktop as well on my laptop to write my thesis. For
some days I can't run LaTex from LyX. It gives me two errors.
The first is in any case before the title of my report-style doc.:

LaTeX Error: Missing \begin{document}.
   \begin {document}
You're in trouble here. Try typing to proceed. If that doesn't
work, type X  to quit.

The second error is located each time at different positions in the first
lines of the doc. bringing the same requester up.

This occurs with 1.1.4pre3 (SuSE7.0-rpm) and 1.1.5fix2. My desktop-LyX has
no problems with the doc. I even use the the same configs for both.
I tried to reinstall lyX and latex, but no effect.

This behavior is completely annoying, because it happens just before the
finishing of my thesis. Maybe the Microsoft-syndrome strikes back, as it was
to expect on an ms-office-doc.? :-)

Regards,
Chris

if i understand you right, then you use two different versions of LyX.
One on your desktop and another one on your laptop, right?
Which versions do you use? There are some format changings in LyX.
If the desktop version shows everything fine it will be a good
idea to install this version also on your laptop.
Especially to avoid troubles while writing a thesis ;)

First the error occured with LyX 1.1.5fix2. This is what I use on both
computers. Then I deinstalled 1.1.5fix2 from the laptop and used 1.1.4 from
the SuSE-CDs. Now I am back to 1.1.5f2 on both computers.

Sorry. I'm confused :-&
You using the same version of LyX with the same OS and the same file
and on one you got errors and on the another one not?

Looks strange. You are sure that there are no differences in your files?
Maybe in the preamble?

This is a marker of a beginning of document compilation
BEFORE what appears in the LyX window.
Check the preamble when you get this kind of error, there
must be somewhere a text-creating instruction (outside
a macrocommand, I mean).
If not, it might be in the called packages, the log is useful
to check which packages are loaded in both situations.

i guess you want the headers always in two-sided mode.
you can choose one side and modify the headers with fancyhdr
for even and odd pages.

must these line come together in the upper right? otherwise
you can choose mathmode, than from the math-panel the overlining

Thanks for your help :) I got the section information into my headers
:) Is there any really good resources, besides this mailing list, I can
find LyX/LaTeX information? I spent a couple hours trying to find this
information yesterday to no avail :(

Also, how would I go about modifying the headers for single-side mode so
they still alternate? When I set it to single mode it takes the first
fancyhead and fancyfoot setting and applies that. How can I modify it
to work the same as two-side? Again, thanks for your help :)

Perhaps you use a footnote in a section, in which case LyX redefines
the footnote command, which probably confuses the latex2html converter.
Try exporting to latex, and check if you get the following in the beginning
of the file:
%% Special footnote code from the package 'stblftnt.sty'
%% Author: Robin Fairbairns -- Last revised Dec 13 1996
\let\SF@@footnote\footnote
...
  \expandafter\noexpand\csname SF@gobble@opt \endcsname}
\def\SF@gobble@twobracket[#1]#2{}

If so, remove this part, and run latex2html manually.

If the above doesn't help, try using a different latex2html converter:

ltoh - http://www.best.com/~quong/ltoh/
hevea - http://para.inria.fr/~maranget/hevea/

Here is a possible solution (there may be a better solution):
In the preamble put
\newcommand{\foo}[1]{\mbox{\begin{tabular}{@{}c@{\,}|} \hline #1\\
\end{tabular}\,}}
and when in the math editor, type \foo{n
(you will see foo{n} where foo{} is in red, and n in blue).

I downloaded xforms v0.88 and also built libXpm v4.11 (but not installed)
as required by LyX1.1.5. The configuration has problem checking gcc although
I have it in my path (why?) hence I used:

have it).

If you put \vspace{-1cm} (marked as TeX) instead of the blank you also
regain the space that the blank line wastes.

This will generate too much space between the title/author and the beginning
of the text.
A better option is to insert a note in the date layout, or alternatively,
insert {} in latex mode in the date layout.

I encountered the same problem with Linux, lyx 1.15fix2 and 1.1.6pre2. I
think it's related to localization. When lyx saves a file, it writes the
version number with your language separator : 1,15 instead of 1.15 in
english. But when it opens the same file, it fails to understand the
separator and thinks the format is 1 and the following text ("15") is part
of the document. I fixed it by setting the environnement variable LC_NUMERIC
to 'C' (standard language) with the command export LC_NUMERIC='C' (for the
bash shell).

You can also use the two-side mode and set the margins to the same lenght
with the latex commands
\setlength{\evensidemargin}{...}
\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{...}
in lyx mode of course.
