{\a{a}} in bibtex

Hi all,

A latex problem I suspect, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I want
to use {\a{a}} in an author name in bibtex, however, when I view the
postscript file, I get an error about the character not being available in
the T1 encoding.

It appears that lyx uses the T1 encoding as a default. Is there a way to
change this to something appropriate?

can't find it in the symbol list of LaTex.

Well, it depends on your package. But if it does use latex, m4 _and_
perl, I guess the syntax can be pretty fragile...

Change "TeX encoding" to "default" in PreferencesOuputsMisc.

A! A bug brought about by lack of understanding. I can see how this 
happens. It most certainly should not. Thank you.

 2. The definition of a color for mathcursor has no effect.

This was a first go at the color code. Large chunks of LyX's internals need 
cleaning up in this regard.

I have now the rigth symbol list for this problem, but when I insert the
LaTex code and to view DVI it gives errors. The first (of the 18 errors)
is Missing $ inserted \bibitem.
What must I do?

Yes, a little. I have preliminary natbib support working in my tree. I'd just 
like to sort out how LyX stores options to LaTeX commands before releasing 
this to the general public.

Natbib can have up to two options in a \cite field; comments before and after 
the citation. LyX can currently deal only with one. To accomodate two is an 
ugly and extremely fragile hack.

Hmmm. Thinking. I COULD ignore the extra options for the time being and just 
release a simple patch that gives users the ability to input different \cite 
commands. It wouldn't break future compatibility. Are people interested?

What do people on the devel list think? Can I backport this to 1.1.6 so it 
goes in a fix1 release?

You can enter these letters by pressing, M-m " and then pressing letter you
want (there also other methods).

I think that a workaround is needed to meet most needs of users towards

Ok, I'm now better informed. But I do think that the LyX version numbers
are confusing. My suggestions:

- drop those a.b.cfixd versions. Since (as you said) those are
minor version changes, then change the minor version number!
Ie, use LyX 1.1.6 instead of 1.1.5fix1, 1.1.7 instead of 1.1.5fix2
etc.
- For major new versions, change the major version numbers, ie.
use LyX 1.2.0 instead of LyX 1.1.6.

Compare the version numbering scheme of most other Linux programs, eg.
the kernel (2.4.0 was a major, 2.2.x were only small bugfix versions with
little new features) or XFree86 (3.3.2 ... 3.3.6 were minor upgrades,
4.0.0 was a major, and then again 4.0.1, 4.0.2 were minor new versions).

M$ started using big version numbers for "minor" upgrades (jump from Word
2.0 to 6.0, though the versions between did actually exist for MS-DOS),
and the LyX team seems to go to the opposite direction--not good either.

If you had followed the dicsussion on the lyx-devel list you would

arabic support on lyx 1.1.6

I have used arabic support in lyx1.1.5, (redhat 6.0 )
whithout big  problem.
I only copied (thank you dekel ) the lyxrc.example to
my lyx Home and changing the corresponding lines to
the arabic support. (I used arabtex )

Now, with Lyx 1.1.6, I try do the same thing but the
program does't work.
I couldn't understand. I use the Redhat 7.0. 

I attache the bug file



I would use lyx with support arabic, I  avoid using 
MS word, I don't like it and I think it  doesn't
support mathematical equations??(in arabic of course )
.
I only work on linux.

A couple of small points in lyxrc.example (lyx 1.1.6)

When reconciling my current lyxrc with the latest lyxrc.example, I found the
following stylistic inconsistencies (i.e. small things, but nice to fix):

1. Some commented out commands have "# " before them (e.g. \serverpipe), but
most just "#". Something like s/# \\/#\\/ is what you need to fix it.

2. Some blocks of config information have two blank lines before (e.g. that
for \label_init_length), but most have only one.

3. "#\print_to_file -o" has an unnecessary space at the end of the line.

4. EXPORT SECTION: some of the comments could be made a bit shorter (say to
restrict to 76 chars rather than 80?).

Finally, looking at european.kbd, I have the following lines added to mine;
is there some reason they're not suitable for the distribution:

\kmod - macron aAeEiIoOuU
\kxmod macron i "\\={\\i}"
\kxmod macron j "\\={\\j}"

(I suppose they're not needed for (m?)any European languages, but neither do
they clash with anything already there).

I think that it's fair to say that use of lyxrc is deprecated and support for 
it will probably be removed eventually. The idea is to use the GUI 
Preferences popup instead, the output of which is saved to a new file 
"preferences".

Moreover (some of) the entries of lyxrc.example may even be WRONG. As 
internal flags change, these entries will lag behind.

I didn't argument on the project- but on the user level.

It seems to me that, in a paradoxical way, the complaint about file format
incompatibilities reveals the strengths of LyX: Many people have written
important documents in LyX, rely on the program and trust in it.

Perhaps the problem could be solved by a (toggable) option that LyX
automatically saves a ".tex" file with each ".lyx" file? That would also
simplify manual post-processing of LyX documents. Currently, one always has
to take care that a ".tex" file actually corresponds to the latest version
of a "*.lyx" file.

partial pdf export in 1.1.6

Hello everyone,

I have the need to pull out chapters of a book seperately and make pdf 
versions of them. In 1.1.5 I can do this by: exporting to PS and then using 
the dialogue box to print out a range of pages, name the file "ChapterX.ps" 
and then use to ps2pdf to convert it. Worked great. Is there anyway to do 
this with the new pdf export function in 1.1.6? Does PS export still have the 
same dialogue box in 1.1.6?

 warning to this effect if you have a lyxrc file and no preferences file,
 when LyX starts?

In this case, LyX will read your lyxrc file. Should you make any changes 
using the Preferences dialog, then these changes will be stored in a new file 
preferences. Thereafter, only preferences will be read. There are some issues 
being reported with the preferences file; namely:
1. make change and save. 
2. make change and save. 
change 1 is lost. Haven't verified this, but this sort of thing is the main 
reason we created a new file rather than overwrite all your hard-earned 
choices in lyxrc. You can always go back to lyxrc by deleting the preferences 
file.

 Also, in that case, the preferences should count as being modified, so that
 you can save them immediately (I just toggled an option twice to get the
 same result, but that's not quite as obvious).

This is a known bug.

LaTeX-errors in 1.1.6

Hi All!

strange behaviour found ;-)
when processing a file with loads of latex in it and some error in it 
(couldn't verify which ones do it, forgotten braces, eg), lyx doesn't 
seem to get the errormessage back (or doesn't handle it right), but 
simply updates dvi or ps with the last version that worked.

Alternatingly it tells me that the resulting document was empty... hmmm
After finding the latex errors (bit of a challenge without knowing where 
to look) and fixing them lyx updates normally again.

There is no need to explicitly convert 1.1.5 files to 1.1.6 !

LyX 1.1.6 reads 1.1.5 files automatically. You will only have problems
going the other way around (trying to read 1.1.6 files with 1.1.5 due to
changes in the tables code).

You may want to back up your 1.1.5 file before saving it in 1.1.6, but
otherwise it's ok.

15). Are there still other po files available?

At the moment the following does happen:

(so it can't find the files!)
- doing ln -s form lib/locale to share/locale and starting lyx results
in a core dump!

Why does 'make install' does install the mo files in a directory which is
not set by default? There was no ...lyx/lib directory in any version
before!?!?

arabic support on ly1.16

hi everybody,
I have used arabic support in lyx1.1.5, (redhat 6.0 )
whithout big  problem.
I only copied (thank you dekel ) the lyxrc.example to
my lyx Home and changing the corresponding lines to
the arabic support. (I used arabtex )

Now, with Lyx 1.1.6, I try do the same thing but the
program does't work.
I couldn't understand. I use the Redhat 7.0.

I would use lyx with support arabic, I  avoid using 
MS word, I don't like it and I think it  doesn't
support mathematical equations??(in arabic of course )

I only work on linux.

Are you using the same version of gygwin? Does using
--with-included-gettext help?

A better way to handle XFig files .fig's is to use the External Inset,
In this inset you add the .fig file and it will add the tex and image
automatically, if it doesn't then it's a single script change to make it
work.

I am just learning lyx for the first time on a paper. 

I need to write an algorithm, with indented lines, properly
lined up.  I have found three things in the documentation 
that looked like possibilities, but none has worked, so far.

The Lyx-code enviroment sounds good in the documentation,
but it isn't there in the paragraph drop down.  Nested
algorithm enviroments give such extreme indentation that
I have no chance of getting my algorithm readable on a
page of normal width.  Protected blanks look halfway
plausible on the screen, but they almost disappear in the
formatted output.  Besides, I suspect the variable-pitch
font would mess up alignment anyway, if I ever did get
enough indentation.

So what is the right way?  

I am using lyx 1.1.5fix1, document class: article(AMS)

In order to autodetect the wvCleanLatex program, it must be in your path.
Did you did a make install after compiling it ?
You can also add a Word-Latex converter manually using the preferences
dialog.

Yes. You just need to define a Word-html and html-latex converters in the
preferences dialog (but you will probably need to install a html-latex

At the moment I have fixed many things that do not run using the standard
(newest!) cygwin stuff available, i.e.:
- regex support does only work when using the lyx internal stuff
- gettext (unresolved extrnals!) does only work ... (as above)
So I have configured LyX with --with-included-getext! And it doesn't help!
Debugging is not so easy although I do have 132MB RAM installed on my
system! gdb running LyX needs more than 100MB of memory (very slow,
sometimes hangups maybe due to the fact that I don't want to wait more than
5 min to any command response).

So to make it clear for me: I am using the correct versions of po/mo files
if I am using the released distribution tar file!?!?

Hallo,

these days I installed SuSE Linux 7 Personal Edition. This bundle contained
also a LyX Version 1.1.4 fix 3. After I had installed the program I begun to
test as I am facinated of the features. 

After I've started the program I saw later on the console the following message:

Achtung: Benötige LyX-Format 2,15, die gewählte Datei enthält nur 2,00

In English: Caution! Need Lyx-format 2,15, the chosen file contains ony 2,00

After I have serious problems with my X-Server I take attention to all
error-messages. So I just have only one question: Is this a serious error or
can I ignore it? If it is serious please let me know what I can do to eliminate
the error!

Lyx-1.1.6 and Included files

Hello,

I've seen the following problem in lyx-1.1.6: when I include a lyx file
into another lyx file, the latex compilation fails because the
translation is:

\Include{the_subfile}

instead of:

\include{the_subfile}

Of course putting \def\Include#1{\include{#1}} in the pramble makes it
work, but it is a temporary fix.

Mea Culpa. Well, sort of. The format of {\a{a}} doesn't work. Oddly, it
works for {\"{u}} though. Not sure where I picked it up. Changing it to
{\aa} provided the solution, which now quite happily uses T1 encoding.

I guess this is because it is not very appropiate to put several
definition paragraphs together, you can check mathematical books in
which after a definition follows a standard paragraph, a remark, a
proposition or whatever except another definition.

Moreover if you want to define several items you can use inside the
definition paragrah an enumerate environment  (see the attached file

Another possibility coul be to play with the Definition Style or more
precisely with the Theorem Style in amsmaths.inc. I didn't find a way to
avoid this behavior modifying some of the tags in the style definition
but perhaps another person in the list could help you in this way.

The only way I have gotten two of them is to put
 a standard paragraph in between, but I have no content for it, so I put
 the name of the thing being defined in the definition paragraph and its
 actual definition in subsequent stardard paragraphs.  I greatly doubt
 this is the way it was intended.  How do I do this the right way.

LyX 1.1.6. does not launch on OSF

still/again trying to get the thing going. LyX is still unable to start
(with the former version ~./lyx dir removed); is any other OSF user more
lucky ?

Now i tried the debug option, maybe this shows an obvious reason that
jumps into the eye of some LyXexpert.

Idea: unlike for the former versions installation is it perhaps also
neccessary to remove files in the ~/tex/share/lyx dir that might be
forgotten my the installation script ?

 2. The definition of a color for mathcursor has no effect.

This was a first go at the color code. Large chunks of LyX's internals need 
cleaning up in this regard.

Yes, a little. I have preliminary natbib support working in my tree. I'd just 
like to sort out how LyX stores options to LaTeX commands before releasing 
this to the general public.

Natbib can have up to two options in a \cite field; comments before and after 
the citation. LyX can currently deal only with one. To accomodate two is an 
ugly and extremely fragile hack.

Hmmm. Thinking. I COULD ignore the extra options for the time being and just 
release a simple patch that gives users the ability to input different \cite 
commands. It wouldn't break future compatibility. Are people interested?

What do people on the devel list think? Can I backport this to 1.1.6 so it 
goes in a fix1 release?

I think that a workaround is needed to meet most needs of users towards
format compatibility and developers on this list.Arousing a flame isn't
very helpful...

Ok, I'm now better informed. But I do think that the LyX version numbers
are confusing. My suggestions:

- drop those a.b.cfixd versions. Since (as you said) those are
minor version changes, then change the minor version number!
Ie, use LyX 1.1.6 instead of 1.1.5fix1, 1.1.7 instead of 1.1.5fix2
etc.
- For major new versions, change the major version numbers, ie.
use LyX 1.2.0 instead of LyX 1.1.6.

Compare the version numbering scheme of most other Linux programs, eg.
the kernel (2.4.0 was a major, 2.2.x were only small bugfix versions with
little new features) or XFree86 (3.3.2 ... 3.3.6 were minor upgrades,
4.0.0 was a major, and then again 4.0.1, 4.0.2 were minor new versions).

M$ started using big version numbers for "minor" upgrades (jump from Word
2.0 to 6.0, though the versions between did actually exist for MS-DOS),
and the LyX team seems to go to the opposite direction--not good either.

If you had followed the dicsussion on the lyx-devel list you would
have seen that this is exactly what we are doing from now on.

arabic support on lyx 1.1.6

hi everybody,
I have used arabic support in lyx1.1.5, (redhat 6.0 )
whithout big  problem.
I only copied (thank you dekel ) the lyxrc.example to
my lyx Home and changing the corresponding lines to
the arabic support. (I used arabtex )

Now, with Lyx 1.1.6, I try do the same thing but the
program does't work.
I couldn't understand. I use the Redhat 7.0. 

I attache the bug file



I would use lyx with support arabic, I  avoid using 
MS word, I don't like it and I think it  doesn't
support mathematical equations??(in arabic of course )
.
I only work on linux.

A couple of small points in lyxrc.example (lyx 1.1.6)

When reconciling my current lyxrc with the latest lyxrc.example, I found the
following stylistic inconsistencies (i.e. small things, but nice to fix):

1. Some commented out commands have "# " before them (e.g. \serverpipe), but
most just "#". Something like s/# \\/#\\/ is what you need to fix it.

2. Some blocks of config information have two blank lines before (e.g. that
for \label_init_length), but most have only one.

3. "#\print_to_file -o" has an unnecessary space at the end of the line.

4. EXPORT SECTION: some of the comments could be made a bit shorter (say to
restrict to 76 chars rather than 80?).

Finally, looking at european.kbd, I have the following lines added to mine;
is there some reason they're not suitable for the distribution:

\kmod - macron aAeEiIoOuU
\kxmod macron i "\\={\\i}"
\kxmod macron j "\\={\\j}"

(I suppose they're not needed for (m?)any European languages, but neither do
they clash with anything already there).

I think that it's fair to say that use of lyxrc is deprecated and support for 
it will probably be removed eventually. The idea is to use the GUI 
Preferences popup instead, the output of which is saved to a new file 
"preferences".

Moreover (some of) the entries of lyxrc.example may even be WRONG. As 
internal flags change, these entries will lag behind.

I didn't argument on the project- but on the user level.

It seems to me that, in a paradoxical way, the complaint about file format
incompatibilities reveals the strengths of LyX: Many people have written
important documents in LyX, rely on the program and trust in it.

Perhaps the problem could be solved by a (toggable) option that LyX
automatically saves a ".tex" file with each ".lyx" file? That would also
simplify manual post-processing of LyX documents. Currently, one always has
to take care that a ".tex" file actually corresponds to the latest version
of a "*.lyx" file.

partial pdf export in 1.1.6

Hello everyone,

I have the need to pull out chapters of a book seperately and make pdf 
versions of them. In 1.1.5 I can do this by: exporting to PS and then using 
the dialogue box to print out a range of pages, name the file "ChapterX.ps" 
and then use to ps2pdf to convert it. Worked great. Is there anyway to do 
this with the new pdf export function in 1.1.6? Does PS export still have the 
same dialogue box in 1.1.6?

 warning to this effect if you have a lyxrc file and no preferences file,
 when LyX starts?

In this case, LyX will read your lyxrc file. Should you make any changes 
using the Preferences dialog, then these changes will be stored in a new file 
preferences. Thereafter, only preferences will be read. There are some issues 
being reported with the preferences file; namely:
1. make change and save. 
2. make change and save. 
change 1 is lost. Haven't verified this, but this sort of thing is the main 
reason we created a new file rather than overwrite all your hard-earned 
choices in lyxrc. You can always go back to lyxrc by deleting the preferences 
file.

 Also, in that case, the preferences should count as being modified, so that
 you can save them immediately (I just toggled an option twice to get the
 same result, but that's not quite as obvious).

This is a known bug.

LaTeX-errors in 1.1.6

Hi All!

strange behaviour found ;-)
when processing a file with loads of latex in it and some error in it 
(couldn't verify which ones do it, forgotten braces, eg), lyx doesn't 
seem to get the errormessage back (or doesn't handle it right), but 
simply updates dvi or ps with the last version that worked.

Alternatingly it tells me that the resulting document was empty... hmmm
After finding the latex errors (bit of a challenge without knowing where 
to look) and fixing them lyx updates normally again.

There is no need to explicitly convert 1.1.5 files to 1.1.6 !

LyX 1.1.6 reads 1.1.5 files automatically. You will only have problems
going the other way around (trying to read 1.1.6 files with 1.1.5 due to
changes in the tables code).

You may want to back up your 1.1.5 file before saving it in 1.1.6, but
otherwise it's ok.

I am using the po files from the lyx source file (fetched monday, january
15). Are there still other po files available?

At the moment the following does happen:
- the mo files are located in ...lyx/lib/locale/xx/lyx.mo
- gdb shows that lyx uses ...lyx/share/locale as its LOCALEDIR by
default
(so it can't find the files!)
- doing ln -s form lib/locale to share/locale and starting lyx results
in a core dump!

Why does 'make install' does install the mo files in a directory which is
not set by default? There was no ...lyx/lib directory in any version
before!?!?

Are you using the same version of gygwin? Does using
--with-included-gettext help?

A better way to handle XFig files .fig's is to use the External Inset,
In this inset you add the .fig file and it will add the tex and image
automatically, if it doesn't then it's a single script change to make it
work.

algorithms, article(AMS), 1.1.5fix1

I am just learning lyx for the first time on a paper. 

I need to write an algorithm, with indented lines, properly
lined up.  I have found three things in the documentation 
that looked like possibilities, but none has worked, so far.

The Lyx-code enviroment sounds good in the documentation,
but it isn't there in the paragraph drop down.  Nested
algorithm enviroments give such extreme indentation that
I have no chance of getting my algorithm readable on a
page of normal width.  Protected blanks look halfway
plausible on the screen, but they almost disappear in the
formatted output.  Besides, I suspect the variable-pitch
font would mess up alignment anyway, if I ever did get
enough indentation.

So what is the right way?  

I am using lyx 1.1.5fix1, document class: article(AMS)

In order to autodetect the wvCleanLatex program, it must be in your path.
Did you did a make install after compiling it ?
You can also add a Word-Latex converter manually using the preferences
dialog.

Yes. You just need to define a Word-html and html-latex converters in the

 Claus located in ...lyx/lib/locale/xx/lyx.mo - gdb shows that lyx
 Claus uses ...lyx/share/locale as its LOCALEDIR by default (so it
 Claus can't find the files!) - doing ln -s form lib/locale to
 Claus share/locale and starting lyx results in a core dump!

 Are you using the same version of gygwin? Does using
 --with-included-gettext help?

At the moment I have fixed many things that do not run using the standard
(newest!) cygwin stuff available, i.e.:
- regex support does only work when using the lyx internal stuff
- gettext (unresolved extrnals!) does only work ... (as above)
So I have configured LyX with --with-included-getext! And it doesn't help!
Debugging is not so easy although I do have 132MB RAM installed on my
system! gdb running LyX needs more than 100MB of memory (very slow,
sometimes hangups maybe due to the fact that I don't want to wait more than
5 min to any command response).

So to make it clear for me: I am using the correct versions of po/mo files
if I am using the released distribution tar file!?!?

Lyx 1.1.4 fix3

Hallo,

these days I installed SuSE Linux 7 Personal Edition. This bundle contained
also a LyX Version 1.1.4 fix 3. After I had installed the program I begun to
test as I am facinated of the features. 

After I've started the program I saw later on the console the following message:

Achtung: Benötige LyX-Format 2,15, die gewählte Datei enthält nur 2,00

In English: Caution! Need Lyx-format 2,15, the chosen file contains ony 2,00

After I have serious problems with my X-Server I take attention to all
error-messages. So I just have only one question: Is this a serious error or
can I ignore it? If it is serious please let me know what I can do to eliminate
the error!

Lyx-1.1.6 and Included files

Hello,

I've seen the following problem in lyx-1.1.6: when I include a lyx file
into another lyx file, the latex compilation fails because the
translation is:

\Include{the_subfile}

instead of:

\include{the_subfile}

Of course putting \def\Include#1{\include{#1}} in the pramble makes it
work, but it is a temporary fix.

Mea Culpa. Well, sort of. The format of {\a{a}} doesn't work. Oddly, it
works for {\"{u}} though. Not sure where I picked it up. Changing it to
{\aa} provided the solution, which now quite happily uses T1 encoding.

I guess this is because it is not very appropiate to put several
definition paragraphs together, you can check mathematical books in
which after a definition follows a standard paragraph, a remark, a
proposition or whatever except another definition.

Moreover if you want to define several items you can use inside the
definition paragrah an enumerate environment  (see the attached file
below) 

Another possibility coul be to play with the Definition Style or more
precisely with the Theorem Style in amsmaths.inc. I didn't find a way to
avoid this behavior modifying some of the tags in the style definition
but perhaps another person in the list could help you in this way.

The only way I have gotten two of them is to put
 a standard paragraph in between, but I have no content for it, so I put
 the name of the thing being defined in the definition paragraph and its
 actual definition in subsequent stardard paragraphs.  I greatly doubt
 this is the way it was intended.  How do I do this the right way.

LyX 1.1.6. does not launch on OSF

still/again trying to get the thing going. LyX is still unable to start
(with the former version ~./lyx dir removed); is any other OSF user more
lucky ?

Now i tried the debug option, maybe this shows an obvious reason that
jumps into the eye of some LyXexpert.

Idea: unlike for the former versions installation is it perhaps also
neccessary to remove files in the ~/tex/share/lyx dir that might be
forgotten my the installation script ?

postscript file, I get an error about the character not being available in
the T1 encoding.

Well, it depends on your package. But if it does use latex, m4 _and_
perl, I guess the syntax can be pretty fragile...

Angus still has plans to make it happen. In fact, if you looked at the
code, you'll find that there are some beginings of (useless for now)
natbib support.

I have now the rigth symbol list for this problem, but when I insert the
LaTex code and to view DVI it gives errors. The first (of the 18 errors)
is Missing $ inserted \bibitem.
What must I do?

Yes, a little. I have preliminary natbib support working in my tree. I'd just 
like to sort out how LyX stores options to LaTeX commands before releasing 
this to the general public.

Natbib can have up to two options in a \cite field; comments before and after 
the citation. LyX can currently deal only with one. To accomodate two is an 
ugly and extremely fragile hack.

Hmmm. Thinking. I COULD ignore the extra options for the time being and just 
release a simple patch that gives users the ability to input different \cite 
commands. It wouldn't break future compatibility. Are people interested?

What do people on the devel list think? Can I backport this to 1.1.6 so it 
goes in a fix1 release?

You can enter these letters by pressing, M-m " and then pressing letter you
want (there also other methods).

I doubt that this might be a helpful comparision, thinking in this terms
might also direct into a wrong direction ! There a so many differences
between MS and the Lyx- project that it seems to me not worth thinking
deeply about it !

by the way is there a possibility  to convert 11.5 files to LaTex and
re-import them to 1.1.6 (althought this might be a bit uneasy in case of
included graphics, isn't it?)

I think that a workaround is needed to meet most needs of users towards
format compatibility and developers on this list.Arousing a flame isn't
very helpful...

Ok, I'm now better informed. But I do think that the LyX version numbers
are confusing. My suggestions:

- drop those a.b.cfixd versions. Since (as you said) those are
minor version changes, then change the minor version number!
Ie, use LyX 1.1.6 instead of 1.1.5fix1, 1.1.7 instead of 1.1.5fix2
etc.
- For major new versions, change the major version numbers, ie.
use LyX 1.2.0 instead of LyX 1.1.6.

Compare the version numbering scheme of most other Linux programs, eg.
the kernel (2.4.0 was a major, 2.2.x were only small bugfix versions with
little new features) or XFree86 (3.3.2 ... 3.3.6 were minor upgrades,
4.0.0 was a major, and then again 4.0.1, 4.0.2 were minor new versions).

M$ started using big version numbers for "minor" upgrades (jump from Word
2.0 to 6.0, though the versions between did actually exist for MS-DOS),
and the LyX team seems to go to the opposite direction--not good either.

If you had followed the dicsussion on the lyx-devel list you would
have seen that this is exactly what we are doing from now on.

arabic support on lyx 1.1.6

hi everybody,
I have used arabic support in lyx1.1.5, (redhat 6.0 )
whithout big  problem.
I only copied (thank you dekel ) the lyxrc.example to
my lyx Home and changing the corresponding lines to
the arabic support. (I used arabtex )

Now, with Lyx 1.1.6, I try do the same thing but the
program does't work.
I couldn't understand. I use the Redhat 7.0.

I would use lyx with support arabic, I  avoid using 
MS word, I don't like it and I think it  doesn't
support mathematical equations??(in arabic of course )

I only work on linux.

A couple of small points in lyxrc.example (lyx 1.1.6)

When reconciling my current lyxrc with the latest lyxrc.example, I found the
following stylistic inconsistencies (i.e. small things, but nice to fix):

1. Some commented out commands have "# " before them (e.g. \serverpipe), but
most just "#". Something like s/# \\/#\\/ is what you need to fix it.

2. Some blocks of config information have two blank lines before (e.g. that
for \label_init_length), but most have only one.

3. "#\print_to_file -o" has an unnecessary space at the end of the line.

4. EXPORT SECTION: some of the comments could be made a bit shorter (say to
restrict to 76 chars rather than 80?).

Finally, looking at european.kbd, I have the following lines added to mine;
is there some reason they're not suitable for the distribution:

\kmod - macron aAeEiIoOuU
\kxmod macron i "\\={\\i}"
\kxmod macron j "\\={\\j}"

(I suppose they're not needed for (m?)any European languages, but neither do
they clash with anything already there).

Reuben, 

I think that it's fair to say that use of lyxrc is deprecated and support for 
it will probably be removed eventually. The idea is to use the GUI 
Preferences popup instead, the output of which is saved to a new file 
"preferences".

Moreover (some of) the entries of lyxrc.example may even be WRONG. As 
internal flags change, these entries will lag behind.
