Under http://cygwin.com/xfree/ the cygwins tell it works now for w95, w98, w2000 wME and wNT!! Also, as far as I understood it is free in source. Furthermore there is no longer a single ALL.EXE archiv but a small installer program that fetches the actual versions of the components from the cygwin-server and installs - sound like nice for MSW users. So I wonder whether we could just ask the cygwins how about to offer a LyX4win port on their server as well - with the option: install LyX in the setup.exe installer. - And for all the people with no or slow internet connection- whether they would allow to include cygwin on a LyX4win CD. E.g., if I use FoilTeX and landscape for slides, the PDF will have the paper "portrait" with the output "sideways." It's fine for printing, but not for presentations. So I previously used "pdftex" but it didn't convert the EPS graphics before output (and lost them in the end result). I do PDF bookmarks, hyper-refs, etc. using normal LaTeX + dvips as well as pdftex. It works. Bolding a Veritcal or Horizontal Line in a Table in Lyx
Hello World: I am nearly done now with this document and doing some minor tweaking (yes, I know, that is what Lyx is supposed to do). I have a table that I rotated 90 degrees to fit on my page. I want to put a BOLD lines -- some vertically and some horizontally -- to divide out the Total sections and headers. I was able to make it happen just using LaTeX to create the table (by repeating \hling\hline at the end of the line I wanted the bold on), but my Lyx barfed it up and I had to redo completely in Lyx. Now, I can't figure out how to get bolding back. I also had a cap on my table to define the columns as a whole (ie., used REGIONS to cap off columns labeled 0, I, II-X) The cap is NOT to go over the first column (defines the rows) and the last column (giving totals). This too was do-able in LaTeX. Are these possible in Lyx? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Michelle Any help would be greatly appreciated. Michelle __ Do You Yahoo!? Thanks to your help, I managed to get a structured bibliography done with all the features I need using bibtopic. However, I have two remaining problems: 1) It only works if I run latex/bibtex on the exported tex file manually. >From within lyx I just get unresolved references and an empty bibliography. I can't even insert references with the lyx popup but have to put it in ERT. 2) Cross-refs between different bibfiles do not work (they just do not appear). In case bibtopic is not the right package for this (the documantation seems to say so), is there any other way for achiving this? Does anyone has expiriences with multibib which is mentioned in the bibtopic docs? Thanks for your help. Marko

The first two lines ("Techn." and "Department ...") are so close together the letters almost touch. Furthermore, the title is formatted as Pulsed neural networks with dynamic synapses in speech recognition: A model motivated by the human auditory pathway The distance between the first and second line is much larger than between the others lines. Lines 2, 3, and 4 almost touch! What is wrong with my LaTeX? I can't find my mistake! Please help! Chris

Both ideas are nice, though I expect your average Windows user would prefer something that could be installed and run under Windows, rather than having to reboot - though you have to reboot so often with Windows, people might not notice ;-) I'm also not sure whether most Win-users could be bothered with configuring X. People who are prepared to wrestle with that kind of stuff are generally already using some flavour of 'nix. A self-extracting, self-installing LyX4Win would be a great idea, and would really get LyX into popular use, I think. As for X-servers, Cygwin's is free, though I don't know if that's as in beer or speech - they seem to have been incorporated into RedHat. See http://cygwin.com/xfree/ Robin
Re: [pdftex] Re: tex2pdf 2.1 released
For people interested in script hacking. I wrote altpdftex, a sh script that uses tex->dvips->ps2pdf (or dvips->ps2pdf on dvi files). It can be linked symbolically to altpdflatex, altpdfetex, altpdfelatex and will do the other formats. altpdftex writes internmediary results in a temporary directory, minimizing the chances files are overwritten (a thing that has bitten be badly at one time). Mainly written for the same reason: old tex code with eps inclusions and ps tricks. There is another benefit for me. Sometimes pdftex produces pdf that, when viewed on my Mac OS X system and printed from there refuses to print on my NeXT printer. The same file through altpdflatex prints fine. The reason is unknown to me, but an alternative is nice to have. altpdftex can be found as ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/comp/macosx/tex- gs/altpdftex Dependencies: TeX dvips ghostscript (ps2pdf) SH On Monday, June 11, 2001, at 12:43 AM, Bryan J. Changing Font size on my rfoot and lfoot text
Greetings All: Still busy hacking away on this document and making progress, but I am at another wall. I want to change the rfoot and lfoot (not to be confused with the footers) font size. I tried this in the preamble: \rfoot{Page \thepage\\Draft Date: 010611}{8pt} but that just caused errors. I also tried going into the Preferences and changing the SMALL option, but that did not seem to be it either. Is it a different box on that screen? or a totally different command somewhere in the preamble? Thanks. Michelle __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Paragraph Spacing
Hello All: I am using the Document Class "Article" and would like to change spacing between paragraphs universally to have an extra space between paragraphs. According to the Lyx manual, I should have the SETSPACE package, which I put into the preamble as: \usepackage setspace Then I went to LAYOUT->DOCUMENT and changed Default Skip to BigSkip but it did not change anything when I viewed in DVI. This would seem to be something I could do document-wide rather than reverting to using the after every paragraph. Help?!?! I AM getting better at this, really I am. Figuring it out slowly but surely! Merci beaucoup! Michelle __ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Mail - only $35 a year! http://personal.mail.yahoo.com/
Re: LyX does not run BibTex
Hi Claus, I'm running MikTex 2.0up1 and it seems to run fine manually. It looks like LyX doesn't sense my bibliography file for some reason, as it is not listed in the .dep file. Here is also the beginning and the end of my .tex file from the tmp-directory: \batchmode \makeatletter \def\input@path{{Z:/LyxDocs/}} \makeatother \documentclass[12pt,english]{article} \usepackage{times} \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} \usepackage[latin1]{inputenc} \usepackage{a4} \usepackage{babel} \usepackage{graphics} \usepackage{setspace} \onehalfspacing \usepackage{subfigure} \makeatletter %% LyX specific LaTeX commands. \providecommand{\LyX}{L\kern-.1667em\lower.25em\hbox{Y}\kern-.125emX\@} %% User specified LaTeX commands. \usepackage{psfrag} \renewcommand\floatpagefraction{.9} \renewcommand\topfraction{.9} \renewcommand\bottomfraction{.9} \renewcommand\textfraction{.1} \setcounter{totalnumber}{50} \setcounter{topnumber}{50} \setcounter{bottomnumber}{50} \makeatother \begin{document} ... \bibliography{Z:/LyxDocs/photonics} \end{document} which looks allright to me... or does it? If there is a line \def\input@path{{Z:/LyxDocs/}}, maybe the full path is not necessary in the \bibliography{Z:/LyxDocs/photonics}, just as it doesn't show up in the lines that include eps figures (only the filename). Can you please send me the .dep-file present in the tmp-directory after calling latex from inside LyX. Furthermore I do need infos about your latex distribution (version, release). The LyX-math-macro has the disadvantage, that it must be defined in the text-body of your document (i.e. on the LyX-canvax/screen) You cannot define it in the preamble or in an included file. Currently you have the choice to 1. Include the macros.tex file in the latex preamble and open the corresponding macros.lyx file in LyX (as a separate document) every time you want to use the macros. 2. Open ~/.lyx/templates/defaults.lyx in LyX, "hard-insert" the macro definitions (Insert|Insert_File|LyX_Document macros.lyx), save again: a) as ~/.lyx/templates/defaults.lyx if you want you macros all the times you start a new (default) document b) as ~/.lyx/templates/defaults_with_macros.lyx if you want to have the macro boxes only for some documents and start these with File|New|With_Template Method 1 has the advantage of "non cluttering the document with macro definition boxes and the disadvantage of some extra action to be taken when starting to use LyX. You loose the structure this way, every header is translated in the same style (among other things). The import/export from MSWord towards HTML has destructive features: - exporting translates styles as font instructions instead of HTML tags, - importing doesn't use styles Some parts are well translated however (bibliography, figure, tables) so the hacking of the structure can be done quickly (if needed). For formulas the only way I know is ltx2rtf. If you have figures, don't forget to « break the links » (which means that you put the images in the document instead of kkeping them as links, following the same logic as « strt » for « stop » :-), otherwise you document cannot be moved without loosing them. -- Jean-Pierre
