This is consistent with how the emphasize and bold buttons work.

If you have a selection, the selection is updated.

If the cursor is in the middle of a word, the whole word is updated.
This is an optimization, we don't have to make selections
in the common case of emphasizing a single word.

If none of the above applies, the cursor itself changs, so if you
start typing (without moving the cursor first) then the new setting
applies to the new text.

Yes, it is possible.  First, make the font available for latex.
If you're lucky, there is some existing latex style file for that,
in which case you put the appropriate \usepackage command
into the document preamble.

If not, then you have to read up on how latex processes fonts
which is a long and boring task.  At least that's how I
remember it.  Figuring this one out took me a few days,
I didn't know much latex at the time.  Perhaps the net
have some nice recipes on how to do this - it isn't
that much work for someone who knows the details.

Once you have the font available in latex, it is easier.
Some document classes, such as koma-script, have
simple commands for changing header font.
In others, you have to the \usefont command.

I have *exactly* the same situation with locally compiled LyX 1.4.0
(QT) for Debian. The only difference is that I don't see
Russian/Belarusian/Cyrillic-in-general chars in navigation menus.

Instead of the CP1251 encoding I see iso8859-1 (latin1). There's no
mistaking it.

There's no such problem in LyX 1.3.6, and I used qtconfig to set
Tahoma as a menu font for QT apps, and yes, I'm using it everywhere
and it does contain the right glyphs.

(Well, lyx-qt 1.3.6 had a similar, albeit *minor* problem: Cyrillic
chars were always displayed as latin1 in ERT, and Cyrillic labels
sometimes didn't work, but I could live with that.)

Unfortunately, this new problem alone makes the new LyX pretty much
unusable, however, I'm not sure everyone has it. Maybe it's a glitch
that only appears when compiling locally, according to Wiki
instructions?

Locale is be_BY.CP1251, but it could be ru_RU.CP1251 or whatever, the
point is, the encoding part of the locale is explicitly defined, so
LyX should have no trouble determining the right charset for the
menus, should it?

APA style with two authors

Hello everyone,
Has anyone been successful using the 'TwoAuthors' command in  an APA
style document? When I try to write an article using this instead of
using 'Author', lyx can no longer export to pdf. Instead, I get several
errors relating to the lack of a \maketitle command. Inserting this
command in ERT only generates more errors. I have also tried adding this
to the preamble, with no luck.

I get some warnings:
TeX Warning: Citation `key-3' on page 4 undefined on input line 148.

I don't understand this. I have in line 148 a \cite{key-3}, but I think I
have a key for it. I have this:

AFAIK latex doesn't look ahead, so the first time it encounters a 
citation in the text it flags it as undefined.  Typically, you need to 
do at least two passes with latex to get cites and cross-references to 
come out correctly.


Try running latex again -- the warnings should disappear on the second pass.

I can confirm this slowness. I installed LyX 1.4 from the binary  
installer on a MacBook Pro (Intel processor) so LyX is running in  a  
processor emulation called Rosetta. This amplifies the sluggishness,  
which is bad for me but good for seeing directly where LyX is being  
slowed down. E.g., when I use arrow keys to move into a math formula,  
then I can press the down arrow multiple times until LyX finally  
moves out of the equation again. The buffered arrow key events then  
cause the cursor to slip a couple of lines down before LyX comes to a  
halt. The worst slow-down appears when the cursor happens to be in a  
sub-level of a math formula, such as a subscript. It can take about  
one second to get out of a formula environment (which is an  
unacceptably long time when you're in the flow of typing).


Another issue is that the scroll bar on the LyX window doesn't seem  
to work properly. Clicking on areas that usually create a page-down,  
I just get a line-by-line scrolling behavior.


Finally, my issues with screen fonts for special math symbols such as  
\iiint are still unresolved (bugzilla bug 2326) in 1.4 binary.

From the warnings you get, there's no error in your .tex file.  What's 
happening here is that the first time you process your source, latex creates 
a number of additional files, depending on the resources you're using.  
Normally, it creates at least a thesis-komascript.aux and a 
thesis-komascript.log.  The second (thesis-komascript.log) is the log file; 
it contains all warning and error messages  you might get during processing.  
It's the first (thesis-komascript.aux) that you'll want.  It contains all 
references to labels you created in your source together with the information 
you'll want to associate with the label, like equation number, section 
number, page number, etc.

Therefore, you'll have to run latex on your file (thesis-komascript.tex) at 
least once more so that it can associate the label reference with the desired 
number.  If you are also bibtex'ing, then you'll have to run latex, then 
bibtex, then latex again, sometimes twice, until it gets all references and 
citations correctly.

Happy latex'ing.  It reminds me of the good ole days when there was no such 
things as LyX, TeXmacs, scientific word to simplify our exciting task of 
writing a thesis...

Same here. It looks like the apa layout file needs some tweaking. Please 
file a bug report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org.

OpenOffice follows the same behaviour than LyX. Kword, Abiword and if I
remember right MsWord are in the opposite group.

I think LyX actual behaviour is quite nice. You generally want to change the
format of the whole word, not of 3 letters in the middle of it.
Nevertheless, I was wondering if it would be possible when you put your
cursor in the middle of a word and select the formatting character dialog
that LyX highlights the whole word, to make it clearer where you formatting
change will apply.

I doubt that. The locale handling for the qt frontend has changed, I am 
pretty sure that that is the reason.

- file a report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org
- attach a test document to it
- attach a screen shot of a wrong navigate menu entry
- attach a screen shot of the section in the main window (which has the 
correct font as far as I understand you)


Then it might be possible to look at the problem, othwerwise it is quite 
difficult.

I also didn't have this problem with 1.3.6 and setting \screen_font_encoding
doesn't help. It seems that the menu font ignores the locale encoding
information.

pdflatex figure size

Hi,
  I've just tried using the pdflatex export option to create a pdf and
my eps based figures are rendered half the size they should be, but take
up twice the page area. I.e. I have a graph set to 100% col width and
this should take up half a page. using pdflatex a whole page is used,
but the graph only takes up a quater of the page space. I also have a
couple of gif images which are correctly handled.

The other pdf export options work as expected.

Unable to edit and save graphic in lyx-1.4.0 (Qt frontend)

I compiled and installed lyx-1.4.0 (Qt frontend) on a SUSE 10 x86_64 box.

In lyx-1.4.0, I'm unable to edit and save a graphic. I wonder if I'm
doing something stupid. Anyway, here's the problem.

Open a new lyx file. Insert a graphic using the Insert graphics button
on the toolbar. Browse and choose a file. Set the width parameter to 4in
or something. Click OK and the dialog vanishes. Save the document. Now,
click on the graphic again. Change the width to say 3in. Now try and
click OK to save your changes to the graphic. I cannot do this. The OK
button on the dialog is grayed out and cannot be clicked. Consequently,
I cannot make any changes to the graphic. I have to delete it and
reinsert a new graphic with the properties that I want. Does anyone else
have this problem?

I found that with enumitem package I get more options
in enumerate environment. This package come with
standart distribution of latex.

tex4ht, tex2rtf - all fails

Hi, I would like to convert my lyx file to some m$ office editable format.

You have suggested tex4ht, what I haven't used before. I have used tex2rtf
already.

Right now I cannot use any of the two.

Can someone help? I don't care how, but I would like to have some format
that my prof can open and edit in Word, and he should see at least some
structure and layout. I no longer care about the quality, it is quite
enough if he sees the numbering of sections, the lists, different depths,
etc.

The latex2rtf is more mistical, as I have an rtf that was generated about

Pasting into tables in Lyx 1.4?

Hi all

It seems to me that the nifty middle-click trick for pasting text into
tables is broken in the latest LyX, version 1.4.

I copy some cells from Open Office, I position my LyX cursor in the
first row, first column of my new LyX table (in a float) and click the
middle button. All the text comes out in that first cell, rather than
distributed through the table cells as I believe it was previously.

Can anyone else confirm this?

Is there another way of (easily) importing tabular data into a LyX document?

was definitely not going to match Yaron's, but may I make a  
suggestion to all the fellow OS X users?


Download Qt4.1.1 open source Trolltech tools. I can give a configure  
setup that will configure, make and make install the toolset. The  
performance improvements to LyX is quite noticeable.

latex goes to great length trying to place all floats. however, with many
floats in a short document, latex may fail - and is not to blame IMHO.
always remember the p in the default float placement setting - !htbp
without the p you risk loosing floats.use the \clearpage command in ERT to
control where latex may place a page of floats in your document.
dont expect lyx to deal with this issue. it is quite complex and ERT is the
solution.

read about floats in the latex faq on ctan - its excellent documentation.

This is consistent with how the emphasize and bold buttons work.

If you have a selection, the selection is updated.

If the cursor is in the middle of a word, the whole word is updated.
This is an optimization, we don't have to make selections
in the common case of emphasizing a single word.

If none of the above applies, the cursor itself changs, so if you
start typing (without moving the cursor first) then the new setting
applies to the new text.

Yes, it is possible.  First, make the font available for latex.
If you're lucky, there is some existing latex style file for that,
in which case you put the appropriate \usepackage command
into the document preamble.

If not, then you have to read up on how latex processes fonts
which is a long and boring task.  At least that's how I
remember it.  Figuring this one out took me a few days,
I didn't know much latex at the time.  Perhaps the net
have some nice recipes on how to do this - it isn't
that much work for someone who knows the details.

Once you have the font available in latex, it is easier.
Some document classes, such as koma-script, have
simple commands for changing header font.
In others, you have to the \usefont command.

 Hebrew sections). I am using the qt version of lyx compiled locally
 according to the instructions in the wiki. How do I change the
 encoding of the pop-ups and menus so that I can see the Hebrew
 instead of gibberish?

I have *exactly* the same situation with locally compiled LyX 1.4.0
(QT) for Debian. The only difference is that I don't see
Russian/Belarusian/Cyrillic-in-general chars in navigation menus.

Instead of the CP1251 encoding I see iso8859-1 (latin1). There's no
mistaking it.

There's no such problem in LyX 1.3.6, and I used qtconfig to set
Tahoma as a menu font for QT apps, and yes, I'm using it everywhere
and it does contain the right glyphs.

(Well, lyx-qt 1.3.6 had a similar, albeit *minor* problem: Cyrillic
chars were always displayed as latin1 in ERT, and Cyrillic labels
sometimes didn't work, but I could live with that.)

Unfortunately, this new problem alone makes the new LyX pretty much
unusable, however, I'm not sure everyone has it. Maybe it's a glitch
that only appears when compiling locally, according to Wiki
instructions?

Locale is be_BY.CP1251, but it could be ru_RU.CP1251 or whatever, the
point is, the encoding part of the locale is explicitly defined, so
LyX should have no trouble determining the right charset for the
menus, should it?

APA style with two authors

Hello everyone,
Has anyone been successful using the 'TwoAuthors' command in  an APA
style document? When I try to write an article using this instead of
using 'Author', lyx can no longer export to pdf. Instead, I get several
errors relating to the lack of a \maketitle command. Inserting this
command in ERT only generates more errors. I have also tried adding this
to the preamble, with no luck.

I get some warnings:

AFAIK latex doesn't look ahead, so the first time it encounters a 
citation in the text it flags it as undefined.  Typically, you need to 
do at least two passes with latex to get cites and cross-references to 
come out correctly.


Try running latex again -- the warnings should disappear on the second pass.

I can confirm this slowness. I installed LyX 1.4 from the binary  
installer on a MacBook Pro (Intel processor) so LyX is running in  a  
processor emulation called Rosetta. This amplifies the sluggishness,  
which is bad for me but good for seeing directly where LyX is being  
slowed down. E.g., when I use arrow keys to move into a math formula,  
then I can press the down arrow multiple times until LyX finally  
moves out of the equation again. The buffered arrow key events then  
cause the cursor to slip a couple of lines down before LyX comes to a  
halt. The worst slow-down appears when the cursor happens to be in a  
sub-level of a math formula, such as a subscript. It can take about  
one second to get out of a formula environment (which is an  
unacceptably long time when you're in the flow of typing).


Another issue is that the scroll bar on the LyX window doesn't seem  
to work properly. Clicking on areas that usually create a page-down,  
I just get a line-by-line scrolling behavior.


Finally, my issues with screen fonts for special math symbols such as  
\iiint are still unresolved (bugzilla bug 2326) in 1.4 binary.

From the warnings you get, there's no error in your .tex file.  What's 
happening here is that the first time you process your source, latex creates 
a number of additional files, depending on the resources you're using.  
Normally, it creates at least a thesis-komascript.aux and a 
thesis-komascript.log.  The second (thesis-komascript.log) is the log file; 
it contains all warning and error messages  you might get during processing.  
It's the first (thesis-komascript.aux) that you'll want.  It contains all 
references to labels you created in your source together with the information 
you'll want to associate with the label, like equation number, section 
number, page number, etc.

Therefore, you'll have to run latex on your file (thesis-komascript.tex) at 
least once more so that it can associate the label reference with the desired 
number.  If you are also bibtex'ing, then you'll have to run latex, then 
bibtex, then latex again, sometimes twice, until it gets all references and 
citations correctly.

Happy latex'ing.  It reminds me of the good ole days when there was no such 
things as LyX, TeXmacs, scientific word to simplify our exciting task of 
writing a thesis...

Same here. It looks like the apa layout file needs some tweaking. Please 
file a bug report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org.

OpenOffice follows the same behaviour than LyX. Kword, Abiword and if I
remember right MsWord are in the opposite group.

I think LyX actual behaviour is quite nice. You generally want to change the
format of the whole word, not of 3 letters in the middle of it.
Nevertheless, I was wondering if it would be possible when you put your
cursor in the middle of a word and select the formatting character dialog
that LyX highlights the whole word, to make it clearer where you formatting
change will apply.

- attach a screen shot of a wrong navigate menu entry
- attach a screen shot of the section in the main window (which has the 
correct font as far as I understand you)


Then it might be possible to look at the problem, othwerwise it is quite 
difficult.

doesn't help. It seems that the menu font ignores the locale encoding
information.

pdflatex figure size

Hi,
  I've just tried using the pdflatex export option to create a pdf and
my eps based figures are rendered half the size they should be, but take
up twice the page area. I.e. I have a graph set to 100% col width and
this should take up half a page. using pdflatex a whole page is used,
but the graph only takes up a quater of the page space. I also have a
couple of gif images which are correctly handled.

The other pdf export options work as expected.

Unable to edit and save graphic in lyx-1.4.0 (Qt frontend)

I compiled and installed lyx-1.4.0 (Qt frontend) on a SUSE 10 x86_64 box.

In lyx-1.4.0, I'm unable to edit and save a graphic. I wonder if I'm
doing something stupid. Anyway, here's the problem.

Open a new lyx file. Insert a graphic using the Insert graphics button
on the toolbar. Browse and choose a file. Set the width parameter to 4in
or something. Click OK and the dialog vanishes. Save the document. Now,
click on the graphic again. Change the width to say 3in. Now try and
click OK to save your changes to the graphic. I cannot do this. The OK
button on the dialog is grayed out and cannot be clicked. Consequently,
I cannot make any changes to the graphic. I have to delete it and
reinsert a new graphic with the properties that I want. Does anyone else
have this problem?

tex4ht, tex2rtf - all fails

Hi, I would like to convert my lyx file to some m$ office editable format.

You have suggested tex4ht, what I haven't used before. I have used tex2rtf
already.

Right now I cannot use any of the two.

Can someone help? I don't care how, but I would like to have some format
that my prof can open and edit in Word, and he should see at least some
structure and layout. I no longer care about the quality, it is quite
enough if he sees the numbering of sections, the lists, different depths,
etc.

Pasting into tables in Lyx 1.4?

Hi all

It seems to me that the nifty middle-click trick for pasting text into
tables is broken in the latest LyX, version 1.4.

I copy some cells from Open Office, I position my LyX cursor in the
first row, first column of my new LyX table (in a float) and click the
middle button. All the text comes out in that first cell, rather than
distributed through the table cells as I believe it was previously.

Can anyone else confirm this?

Is there another way of (easily) importing tabular data into a LyX document?

was definitely not going to match Yaron's, but may I make a  
suggestion to all the fellow OS X users?


Download Qt4.1.1 open source Trolltech tools. I can give a configure  
setup that will configure, make and make install the toolset. The  
performance improvements to LyX is quite noticeable.

latex goes to great length trying to place all floats. however, with many
floats in a short document, latex may fail - and is not to blame IMHO.
always remember the p in the default float placement setting - !htbp
without the p you risk loosing floats.use the \clearpage command in ERT to
control where latex may place a page of floats in your document.
dont expect lyx to deal with this issue. it is quite complex and ERT is the
solution.

read about floats in the latex faq on ctan - its excellent documentation.

This is consistent with how the "emphasize" and "bold" buttons work.

If you have a selection, the selection is updated.

If the cursor is in the middle of a word, the whole word is updated.
This is an optimization, we don't have to make selections
in the common case of emphasizing a single word.

If none of the above applies, the cursor itself changs, so if you
start typing (without moving the cursor first) then the new setting
applies to the new text.

Yes, it is possible.  First, make the font available for latex.
If you're lucky, there is some existing latex style file for that,
in which case you put the appropriate \usepackage command
into the document preamble.

If not, then you have to read up on how latex processes fonts
which is a long and boring task.  At least that's how I
remember it.  Figuring this one out took me a few days,
I didn't know much latex at the time.  Perhaps the net
have some nice recipes on how to do this - it isn't
that much work for someone who knows the details.

Once you have the font available in latex, it is easier.
Some document classes, such as koma-script, have
simple commands for changing header font.
In others, you have to the \usefont command.

The fact that it appears in a random place is because the error is in
your bbl file (generated by bibtex). This is a known LyX bug.

The question is whether you have an entry in your .bib file that
contains this string
Files1/$file/FinalReportPrinter.pdf

APA style with two authors

Hello everyone,
Has anyone been successful using the 'TwoAuthors' command in  an APA
style document? When I try to write an article using this instead of
using 'Author', lyx can no longer export to pdf. Instead, I get several
errors relating to the lack of a \maketitle command. Inserting this
command in ERT only generates more errors. I have also tried adding this
to the preamble, with no luck.

  It is not an easy problem to solve. Docbook uses olink for that but then you 
need an external tool to guarantee that those external references exists and 
are correctly deal depending on the exported format. It is not a trivial 
task.

  You could use the url inset and overload its definition to do what you want.

  I don't blame them. :-)
  The problem is already quite complex.

  I have (ab)used this feature before but switching off the use of temporary

I get some warnings:

I don't understand this. I have in line 148 a \cite{key-3}, but I think I
have a key for it. I have this:

AFAIK latex doesn't look ahead, so the first time it encounters a 
citation in the text it flags it as undefined.  Typically, you need to 
do at least two passes with latex to get cites and cross-references to 
come out correctly.


Try running latex again -- the warnings should disappear on the second pass.

I can confirm this slowness. I installed LyX 1.4 from the binary  
installer on a MacBook Pro (Intel processor) so LyX is running in  a  
processor emulation called Rosetta. This amplifies the sluggishness,  
which is bad for me but good for seeing directly where LyX is being  
slowed down. E.g., when I use arrow keys to move into a math formula,  
then I can press the down arrow multiple times until LyX finally  
moves out of the equation again. The buffered arrow key events then  
cause the cursor to slip a couple of lines down before LyX comes to a  
halt. The worst slow-down appears when the cursor happens to be in a  
sub-level of a math formula, such as a subscript. It can take about  
one second to get out of a formula environment (which is an  
unacceptably long time when you're in the flow of typing).


Another issue is that the scroll bar on the LyX window doesn't seem  
to work properly. Clicking on areas that usually create a page-down,  
I just get a line-by-line scrolling behavior.


Finally, my issues with screen fonts for special math symbols such as  
\iiint are still unresolved (bugzilla bug 2326) in 1.4 binary.

From the warnings you get, there's no error in your .tex file.  What's 
happening here is that the first time you process your source, latex creates 
a number of additional files, depending on the resources you're using.  
Normally, it creates at least a thesis-komascript.aux and a 
thesis-komascript.log.  The second (thesis-komascript.log) is the log file; 
it contains all warning and error messages  you might get during processing.  
It's the first (thesis-komascript.aux) that you'll want.  It contains all 
references to labels you created in your source together with the information 
you'll want to associate with the label, like equation number, section 
number, page number, etc.

Therefore, you'll have to run latex on your file (thesis-komascript.tex) at 
least once more so that it can associate the label reference with the desired 
number.  If you are also bibtex'ing, then you'll have to run latex, then 
bibtex, then latex again, sometimes twice, until it gets all references and 
citations correctly.

Happy latex'ing.  It reminds me of the good ole days when there was no such 
things as LyX, TeXmacs, scientific word to simplify our exciting task of 
writing a thesis...

hasn't happened again...  the delay in leaving math subscripts by

I think LyX actual behaviour is quite nice. You generally want to change the
format of the whole word, not of 3 letters in the middle of it.
Nevertheless, I was wondering if it would be possible when you put your
cursor in the middle of a word and select the formatting character dialog
that LyX highlights the whole word, to make it clearer where you formatting
change will apply.

I doubt that. The locale handling for the qt frontend has changed, I am 
pretty sure that that is the reason.

- file a report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org
- attach a test document to it
- attach a screen shot of a wrong navigate menu entry
- attach a screen shot of the section in the main window (which has the 
correct font as far as I understand you)


Then it might be possible to look at the problem, othwerwise it is quite 
difficult.

I also didn't have this problem with 1.3.6 and setting \screen_font_encoding
doesn't help. It seems that the menu font ignores the locale encoding
information.

pdflatex figure size

Hi,
  I've just tried using the pdflatex export option to create a pdf and
my eps based figures are rendered half the size they should be, but take
up twice the page area. I.e. I have a graph set to 100% col width and
this should take up half a page. using pdflatex a whole page is used,
but the graph only takes up a quater of the page space. I also have a
couple of gif images which are correctly handled.

The other pdf export options work as expected.

Unable to edit and save graphic in lyx-1.4.0 (Qt frontend)

I compiled and installed lyx-1.4.0 (Qt frontend) on a SUSE 10 x86_64 box.

In lyx-1.4.0, I'm unable to edit and save a graphic. I wonder if I'm
doing something stupid. Anyway, here's the problem.

Open a new lyx file. Insert a graphic using the "Insert graphics" button
on the toolbar. Browse and choose a file. Set the width parameter to 4in
or something. Click OK and the dialog vanishes. Save the document. Now,
click on the graphic again. Change the width to say 3in. Now try and
click OK to save your changes to the graphic. I cannot do this. The "OK"
button on the dialog is grayed out and cannot be clicked. Consequently,
I cannot make any changes to the graphic. I have to delete it and
reinsert a new graphic with the properties that I want. Does anyone else
have this problem?

I found that with enumitem package I get more options
in enumerate environment. This package come with
standart distribution of latex.

tex4ht, tex2rtf - all fails

Hi, I would like to convert my lyx file to some m$ office editable format.

You have suggested tex4ht, what I haven't used before. I have used tex2rtf
already.

Right now I cannot use any of the two.

Can someone help? I don't care how, but I would like to have some format
that my prof can open and edit in Word, and he should see at least some
structure and layout. I no longer care about the quality, it is quite
enough if he sees the numbering of sections, the lists, different depths,
etc.

Pasting into tables in Lyx 1.4?

Hi all

It seems to me that the nifty middle-click trick for pasting text into
tables is broken in the latest LyX, version 1.4.

I copy some cells from Open Office, I position my LyX cursor in the
first row, first column of my new LyX table (in a float) and click the
middle button. All the text comes out in that first cell, rather than
distributed through the table cells as I believe it was previously.

Can anyone else confirm this?

Is there another way of (easily) importing tabular data into a LyX document?

was definitely not going to match Yaron's, but may I make a  
suggestion to all the fellow OS X users?


Download Qt4.1.1 open source Trolltech tools. I can give a configure  
setup that will configure, make and make install the toolset. The  
performance improvements to LyX is quite noticeable.

latex goes to great length trying to place all floats. however, with many
floats in a short document, latex may fail - and is not to blame IMHO.
always remember the p in the default float placement setting -> !htbp
without the p you risk loosing floats.use the \clearpage command in ERT to
control where latex may place a page of floats in your document.
dont expect lyx to deal with this issue. it is quite complex and ERT is the
solution.

read about floats in the latex faq on ctan - its excellent documentation.
