Re: Graphics in LyX 1.5.4 on MacOS X cause strange error

2008-04-18 Thread Peter Kämpf

Hi Jürgen,

no, I always place it above the caption (learned this in LyX 1.3
days), but inside the frame of the floating object.

I just made the test: Placing the graphic inside the caption makes no
difference to the error message.

I wonder if I have something strange in my LyX preamble - this
document had been started in LyX 1.3 days, and the conversion to 1.5
needed some manual tweaking. The newly created document (which I now
use for testing, since it is much shorter) has the same preamble,
making me wonder if maybe my defaults are screwed up and I need to
wipe the LyX installation and start from scratch ... would that be
worth a try?

I'm guessing there's nothing wrong with your LyX or LaTeX setup; you're just
not understanding how to make the bibliographic entries.

The bibliographies internal to LyX must use the "Default (numerical)" option
-- not Natbib or Jurabib (in Document > Settings > Bibliography). The "Key"
field can be anything you want it to be -- it's simply what appears in the
LyX GUI. The "Label" field is what appears in the printed output; if you
leave it blank, it will be automatically numbered when the document is
typeset, or you can enter something else, and that will appear in the
printed output placed between square brackets ("[" and "]"). The text that
appears in the bibliography should be placed immediately after the Label/Key
inset, on the same line. (See the attached, edited version of your
document.)

If you want the author-date method, you can fake it as you were trying, but
it really would be better to create a bibliographical database (on Mac, use
BibDesk.app), and then use either Natbib or Jurabib, following the
instructions in the User's Guide.

You don't say what document class you are using. The Memoir class has
special lengths that can be set to control this problem: \cftXnumwidth,
where X can be part, chapter, section, etc.

I'm not that familiar with other classes, but look in the documentation
for something similar.

List of Symbol (Nomenclature) AND List of Abbreviations (Glossary)

2008-04-18 Thread Michael Brunneder

Hi!

I'm writing a thesis in Lyx and I've the following problem. I need a
List of Symbols (Nomenclature) and a separate List of Abbreviations. The
Nomenclature is working fine as described in the Lyx user guide. But now
I would need more or less a "second" nomenclature to realize my List of
Abbreviations. Any easy way to achive this?

Thanks for all your answers and suggestions.

No; if you're using LyX's bibliography environment rather than a separate
.bib file, then you don't need to worry about it. Perhaps you could send to
the list a (minimal) .lyx file that exhibits the problem so that we can see
more clearly what you're doing.

Did Uwe's solution not work for you? If not, then yes the tocloft
package will work. Something like this (just adjust the 6em to
whatever works for you). Put this in the preamble.

\usepackage{tocloft}
\renewcommand{\cftsecaftersnumb}{\hspace{6em}}
\renewcommand{\cftsubsecaftersnumb}{\hspace{6em}}

Most desktop environments offer a "clipboard" application that can help
to ease the pain (somewhat). I use xfce and configure the clipboard
applet to "separate management of the clipboards". If pasting into LyX
fails, I can open the clipboard-list and select the desired entry.
After that, a middle click in LyX usually works as expected.
Still not as effortless as I wish but miles better than using a file as
intermediate...

Agreed. However, did you try with different source applications? Here,
some work and some not, so I cannot tell whether the problem is really
with lyx or with e.g. Jed.

This might not be everyones favourite. I would like the default
behaviour to resemble LaTeX (and not only LaTeX) conventions that
line-breaks are irrelevant but blank lines start a new paragraph.
(Maybe one more configuration setting...)

Although it is a good and interesting commercial product,
it has been a long time since I have had much experience
with SWP. My recollection is that such dumps usually
contain information about where their parser choked.
Look at it carefully.

If that does not help, delete half the .tex file
at a time and find the problem by repeatedly importing the
remainder. This should only take about 15 minutes,
even for a big file.

The resulting information could actually prove useful
to the LyX community, since it may suggest
that LyX is outputting something that can create
problems for LaTeX parsers.

It is definitely cheaper for your co-author to "buy" LyX, than it is for
you to buy SWP. There won't be any budget problems, even if
he only uses LyX for this one book. If you really like LyX, then
perhaps you can help him install LyX and get him started with it?

As for problems with SWP crashing, that is something you have to
complain to SWP developers about. It is *possible* to change the latex
output from LyX to accomodate SWP import, _if_ you can find a developer
interested in doing so. Even so, it won't appear until the next release.
Currently nothing can be done, as we have no idea what it is that
cause SWP trouble. And the LyX developers tend to use LyX mostly, so are
not likely to figure this out on their own.

You need to amend the Elsevier article's elsart.layout file so it recognizes
optional arguments for the Thanks style:

--- /usr/share/lyx/layouts/elsart.layout2008-03-13 16:21:21.0
+0100
+++ /tmp/elsart.layout  2008-04-18 09:35:12.0 +0200

LatexType Command
LatexName thanks
InTitle   1
+   OptionalArgs  1
Font
  SizeSmall
  Family  Typewriter

Maybe this should be made clear in the abovementioned thread as well.

I have change in a document (in the preamble) the numeration style
like that:

\renewcommand{\labelenumi}{\alph{enumi}.)}
\renewcommand{\labelenumii}{\roman{enumii}.)}

It works fine with the dvi and pdf output, but it would be nice if
Lyx would show that on screen too (It still shows the default
numbering).

Is there a way to force Lyx to do so?

No, we cannot check for user made customization in the preamble.

Yes, I thought so. Anyway I have found my feature request "Does anybody
know if this "feature" is planned (for example in the document settings
like one can change the bullets)?" has already been requested a few times:
