My mistake. You cannot choose font encoding from lyx.

It should have read *input encoding* which in lyx is available under
Document>Settings>Language>Encoding

It is a lyx problem if you can actively set
Document>Settings>Language>Encoding to utf8x while the package ucs (and
hence utf8x.def) is not installed.

Could you test whether you can change the encoding to something else and
back to utf8x (before installing ucs)?

Of course it is not a lyx problem, if you can open view and edit my file
even if it specifies an encoding your system does not support. ;-)

This is a bug in tex4ht, the LaTeX to ODT converter.

I just submitted a bug report to the tex4ht maintainer, and he informed me 
that he will look into the problem.

conversion to open doc format and tables

Dear LyX users,

Does anyone know why conversion from LyX to Open Document format adds
blank rows to tables? I'd say about three extra blank rows in the Open
Doc file for each row in the original LyX document. Even when the
simplest table is converted, an extra cell is added at the bottom.

Mac OS 10.5.3, LyX 1.5.5

Is there any way around this?

Short synopsis of what transpired off-list, in case anyone cares:  the 
problem occurs when a paragraph environment is used and the line spacing 
is changed, so that the emitted LaTeX looks like


\begin{singlespace}

\paragraph{\noindent \textmd{Definition}: }
\end{singlespace}

for example.  Workarounds include using a standard rather than paragraph 
environment or sticking to the default line spacing.  Maybe a TeXpert 
can spot why this combination flops; I can't.  I just know (empirically) 
that it does.

Welcome to bug # 4727: http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4727. 
The best workaround I know of is to enter "\`\ \'\ " (without the 
quotes) in ERT.

installed "unofficial", because pdf thingie didn't work in Vista).


When I try to insert ` or ´ in lyx-code or program listing the document 
won't compile.
Actually nothing at all happens when I click any of the button that are 
supposed to create dvi, pdf or ...

Hans,

There may be a specific problem with that one document that is not 
visible in the LyX GUI.  Can you cut down the offending document to just 
enough to demonstrate the problem and either post it to the list or, if 
it is too large (or too private), mail it to me?

LyX is supposed to do this, but there are problems. These `local' 
layouts can go missing, and then you lose your formatting again. This is 
one version of bug 4618. For myself, I very much do NOT recommend this 
system.

i dont think this is possible. you can only select language encoding,
which was set to utf8x in your previous file. i thought previously that
utf8x is for cjk purposes, but now i see the greek support is listed too :)

The obvious solution seems to be using writer2latex 0.4b.
Consider researching how the older software can be installed

"witer2latex4b".)

I assume reverting all of openoffice to an earlier version isn't 
interesting.  You may also want to notify openoffice developers

about this problem - maybe they can fix the new writer2latex.
It is a regression when new software fail to do the work of
older software it replaces. Most open-source developers try
to avoid regressions, at least when get notified.

Quick dirty trick:

After the last complete paragraph on that page, insert a vfill
and then your "footnote" text using the font size "smaller" (same size 
as actual footnotes). The vertical fill (vertical spacing of the

fill variety) will eat up any white space making sure the
text gets to the bottom of the page.

It is a quick trick only, as it won't work well if you ever
add stuff in front of it. But I guess you won't do that, if the
chapter in question is a copy of something already published?

utf8x.def is part of the "ucs" package for comprehensive unicode support.

I use the texlive packages from Debian/testing which contain ucs in
texlive-latex-recommended. 

I do not know whether ucs is part of tetex (or which tetex package it is
in). But tetex should cooperate with it if you locally install ucs from
CTAN.

i installed these and it works beatifully on the screen.

now the next step :) i see latex error that utf8x.def file is missing.
is tetex supposed to work with the chosen encoding or do i need texlive?
what tex distribution do you use?

For LyX GUI or as document font?

* The LyX GUI should let you select between all properly installed system
  fonts (I use DejaVu).
  
* Standard latex and pdftex cannot use "unicode fonts" as-is (while XeTeX
  can). However, many font families exist in both, unicode and
  latex-compatible encodings and support greek text with standard latex.
  
  The choice of a document font is limited in the LyX GUI. 
  
  To use a properly installed latex font that does not show up in the
  font-settings dialogue, you can set the document fonts to [default]
  there and load the font package in the custom LaTeX preamble.

This is normal for capital greek letters. Small letters should have all of
the accents on top, however.

Unicode  is a standardised encoding for
electronic documents that comprises "all" known glyphs (letters, number
and symbols) of all alphabets of the world.

Since version 1.5, LyX uses the unicode encoding internally.

Each glyph is assigned a unique number, a standardised name and a
reference image. 

E.g. from Block 7 "Greek and Coptic"

Character 'Ϋ' (939, 0x3AB)
03ABGREEK CAPITAL LETTER UPSILON WITH DIALYTIKA

Character 'ύ' (973, 0x3CD)

I copied them from the `gucharmap` character listing application. Many
editors (but not LyX) have a "special chars" feature where you can select
any character from a table. 

As this becomes tedious with longer texts, alternative input methods
might be a properly set-up combine-key feature on X-Windows, a greek
keymap for LyX (see Help>Customization) or use of the
polutonikogreek option to babel (which will loose the "see the greek
letter in the LyX GUI" feature and is currently not supported by LyX).

Although I have unicode fonts installed they don't show up as a possible
choice in Lyx. How can you make it see them?

You need a "unicode font" with the characters in question, of course.

I have no problems to see the greek and polutonikogreek letters in both, LyX
and printout.

* For the LyX GUI, I use DejaVu Serif, DejaVu Sans and Inconsolata.

  DejaVu is an extension of the Vera fonts with more glyphs that is also
  used as default in OpenOffice - optimized for on-screen rendering.
  However, any "unicode font" with a good coverage will do.
  
* For the printed document, I kept to the standard Latin Modern outline
  fonts with a high coverage of greek, latin, and kyrillic glyphs.
  
  The LaTeX font catalogue  provides an
  overview of usable fonts but Greek is no special category there. 
  However, all the GFS (Greek Font Society) fonts should support greek
  ;-) as does e.g. Kerkis, Libertine, and Oldstandard
  .
