You can find it e.g. in $TEXMF/tex/latex/koma-script/scrartcl.cls:

references between child documents

2008-09-02 Thread Joao P Leitao
Hi,

I'm using Lyx for a few weeks and have a few child documents. I'd like to
reference a Chapter of child document A in child document B.

I've a label in the chapter of child document A the one I want to reference.

I've tried to use latex package xr but without positive results (probably I did
it wrong in document LaTeX preamble).

Can you help in making this work?

Thanks,
Joao

Just open both documents in the LyX editor. In the Insert reference
window, you can then choose in a drop-down box the document that
contains the label you want to refer to.

LyX automatically merges the references from all child documents in
this window if you also open the master document.

Number an equation according to a previous equation's number

Hello,

I would like to achieve the following example.

Assume I number a given equation in a LyX document with the tag
eq:property and the resulting number is n. Then after some text and
equations, I put a slightly modified version of eq:property.
How can I number the last equation n' ?

Thank you for your answer.

OK, lets have a look, there are 2 scrartcl.cls on my HD with
different items:

1. in /usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/tex/latex/koma-script/
scrartcl.cls

- it has: [EMAIL PROTECTED]/07/30 v2.95b KOMA-Script}%
which seems outdatet, BUT
2. in home ~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/koma-script/scrartcl.cls
- that says: [EMAIL PROTECTED]/12/24 v2.98 KOMA-Script}%

You can add \listfiles to the preamble, then the version numbers
will appear

at the end of you LaTeX log file.

== Result: the first entries are:
scrlttr2.cls2007/12/24 v2.98 KOMA-Script document class (letter)
scrkbase.sty2007/12/24 v2.98 KOMA-Script package (basics and
keyval use)

So I hopefully suppose that LyX/LaTeX use(s) the newer v2.98 KOMA-
Script version, but nevertheless my koma-letter2.lyx template does
not run and should be corrected. It seems to me, that, in this
template, Class Options mostly begin with a comma (,) - in order to
get the options - even after different out- and uncommenting by the
user - within the \KOMAoptions{} command comma-seperated, but my
given template

= in ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.5/templates/default
the first option (not commented out in the template) begins with a
comma:

,fromalign=center% alignment of the address
and causes the latex-error.

As another workarround (after the first aid of Jürgen) I uncommented
the pagenumber=... option two lines before in the template -
interesting: the first one of the outcommented options without a
comma before (because uncommenting it was the first intention of the
template authors?)! -This gives anyway a good solution, because
nevertheless the pagenumber will only be typesetted if the letter has
more than one page (and then only beginning with page 2), and in that
case it normally should be wanted by the author of a letter.

Now, also in LyX this part of my KOMA-letter2 template preamble looks
like

%% THE CLASS OPTIONS
%% Remove preceeding '%' to uncomment an item
\KOMAoptions{%
%,headsepline=true% separate the header with a line on page 1
%,footsepline=true% separate the footer with a line on page 1
%pagenumber=botcenter% position of the page number (see docu)
%,parskip=false% Use indent instead of skip (more options cf. docu)
,fromalign=center% alignment of the address
,fromrule=aftername% separate the address with a line?
,fromphone=true% print sender phone number
%,fromfax=true% print sender fax number
%, and so on and so forth...
}

With this, the template works as it is (so that everytime I call it
with file | new from template ... I am free to choose other options.

Bad luck: only after working on this answer I detected that in the
KOMA-letter2.lyx template within the LyX-application packet (in: /
Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/templates/
there is a functioning KOMA-letter2-template. pagenumber= is still
commented out, but the first uncommented option (here: fromalign=)
begins without comma. So, this template would work too. Might be that
I, after upgrading LyX, had missed/failed to copy the templates newly
into my home-template-folder. Perhaps I should test this with other
disfunctioning lyx templates, too (when needed)...

Howsoever, the KOMA-letter2.lyx template now works correct on my
computer!

Inside the new equation, type \tag and hit the space bar to get a blue

followed by a single quote. You need to load the AMS math package; if
you have LyX set to load it automatically, that will work (LyX will see
the \tag and load the package).

If you want a better looking prime, you can try the following:

\tag{\ensuremath{\ref{eq:property}^{\prime}}}

Again, type \tag followed by space. Inside that, type \ensuremath
followed by space. LyX will not recognize this as a command, so you
have to type \{ followed by space to get the braces for it. Inside
those braces, insert the cross-reference followed by \prime in a
superscript. I'm not sure whether this changes the font used for the
equation numerals, though.

eps to pdf converter/eps preview

2008-09-02 Thread Ernesto Posse
Hi. I have an issue with previewing EPS files. I've seen in the list's

an EPS diagram generated by Metapost from a Dia diagram. When I
include the generated EPS image, the document is generated correctly
by latex + dvipdf or latex + dvips + ps2pdf (but not by pdflatex.) Yet
I get the typical Unable to convert to loadable format in the LyX
preview. What is strange is that I do have the converter from
Imagemagick and epstopdf installed. When I run these I get an error
from ghostscript (below.) Both seem to complain about cmmi10, but I
don't know what this is: a missing font? If so, why doesn't latex
complain about it? What can I do about it?

By the way, imagemagick's converter gives me this error: convert:
Postscript delegate failed `ex1v2.eps': No such file or directory.
but the file is there...

Thanks

What is the best way to upgrade to LyX 1.6?

2008-09-02 Thread Erez Yerushalmi
Hi all,

I am using LyX 1.5.5 and would like to upgrade to 1.6.

What is the best way to do this?
Should I *un*install 1.5.5 and then install 1.6, or just upload the new,
install it, and it will erase the old?
Or, finally, should I wait a bit longer for another 1.6 version to come,
which is better then the LyX 1.6.0rc2.

Thanks,

Erez

I am running them side-by-side until 1.6 is ready for prime time. I

If you are brave, and really excited about trying out the new 1.6

Also be warned that files are not (yet) backward-compatible - meaning

That's for Linux!

What platform are you on, Erez?

On Mac, the installer creates a separate user-directory for 1.6, keeping
the 1.5 user directory untouched (and the right one is used
automatically). Just give the 1.6-application a different name (e.g.
LyX16.app), and the two versions happily co-exist.

That's part of the protocol you're using for citing sources, which is
a question for you and your editor(s), if any. Some disciplines have
particular conventions, which are often formalized in style guides.

In MLA style, for example, works are sometimes cited using the actual
printing date, with the first-publication date in square brackets:
1976 [1600]. That's because minute details of the text are sometimes
important in literary and textual studies, and typographical errors,
spelling changes, and the like can be introduced in subsequent
printings. (Sometimes there are even bigger changes; James apparently
rewrote the ending to _Daisy Miller_ at some point between editions,
so there are two versions of the novel out there.)

What it comes down to, though, is that there are no natural rules for
how to cite anything. There are more-or-less arbitrary rules created
by various publishing houses, professional organizations, journals,
editors, and the like; there are guidelines and style guides; there
are the whims of individuals.

So no one can give you a universal rule for a specific sort of
citation. It depends on who's going to be reading it, and what they'll
accept.

cross-reference later. The cross-reference will pick up the contents of
the \tag{} command as if it were a normal equation number.

view PDF doesn't work with a certain mathematical formula

I am writing a paper with lyx, and for some reason viewing of exporting DVI

narrow it down to the mathematical formulas. Something happened along the

Anybody has an idea what's going on? I would hate to have to retype all the

references between child documents

2008-09-02 Thread Joao P Leitao
Hi,

I'm using Lyx for a few weeks and have a few child documents. I'd like to

I've a label in the chapter of child document A the one I want to reference.

I've tried to use latex package xr but without positive results (probably I did
it wrong in document LaTeX preamble).

Can you help in making this work?

Thanks,

Just open both documents in the LyX editor. In the Insert reference
window, you can then choose in a drop-down box the document that
contains the label you want to refer to.

LyX automatically merges the references from all child documents in
this window if you also open the master document.

OK, lets have a look, there are 2 scrartcl.cls on my HD with
different items:

1. in /usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/tex/latex/koma-script/
scrartcl.cls

- it has: [EMAIL PROTECTED]/07/30 v2.95b KOMA-Script}%

2. in home ~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/koma-script/scrartcl.cls
- that says: [EMAIL PROTECTED]/12/24 v2.98 KOMA-Script}%

at the end of you LaTeX log file.

}

Howsoever, the KOMA-letter2.lyx template now works correct on my
computer!

Inside the new equation, type \tag and hit the space bar to get a blue
widget. In the widget, insert a cross reference to eq:property,
followed by a single quote. You need to load the AMS math package; if
you have LyX set to load it automatically, that will work (LyX will see
the \tag and load the package).

If you want a better looking prime, you can try the following:

\tag{\ensuremath{\ref{eq:property}^{\prime}}}

Again, type \tag followed by space. Inside that, type \ensuremath
followed by space. LyX will not recognize this as a command, so you
have to type \{ followed by space to get the braces for it. Inside
those braces, insert the cross-reference followed by \prime in a
superscript. I'm not sure whether this changes the font used for the
equation numerals, though.

but the file is there...

Thanks

What is the best way to upgrade to LyX 1.6?

What is the best way to do this?

Or, finally, should I wait a bit longer for another 1.6 version to come,

That's for Linux!

What platform are you on, Erez?

On Mac, the installer creates a separate user-directory for 1.6, keeping
the 1.5 user directory untouched (and the right one is used
automatically). Just give the 1.6-application a different name (e.g.

So no one can give you a universal rule for a specific sort of
citation. It depends on who's going to be reading it, and what they'll
accept.

The usual way; just insert a label in the equation and use a

You can find it e.g. in $TEXMF/tex/latex/koma-script/scrartcl.cls:

Can you help in making this work?

Just open both documents in the LyX editor. In the "Insert reference"
window, you can then choose in a drop-down box the document that
contains the label you want to refer to.

LyX automatically "merges" the references from all child documents in

OK, lets have a look, there are 2 scrartcl.cls on my HD with
different items:

1. in /usr/local/texlive/2007/texmf-dist/tex/latex/koma-script/
scrartcl.cls

- it has: [EMAIL PROTECTED]/07/30 v2.95b KOMA-Script}%

2. in home ~/Library/texmf/tex/latex/koma-script/scrartcl.cls

scrkbase.sty2007/12/24 v2.98 KOMA-Script package (basics and

=> in ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.5/templates/default
the first option (not commented out in the template) begins with a
comma:

,fromalign=center% alignment of the address
and causes the latex-error.

As another workarround (after the first aid of Jürgen) I uncommented
the "pagenumber=..." option two lines before in the template -
interesting: the first one of the outcommented options without a
comma before (because uncommenting it was the first intention of the
template authors?)!

%,headsepline=true% separate the header with a line on page >1
%,footsepline=true% separate the footer with a line on page >1
%pagenumber=botcenter% position of the page number (see docu)
%,parskip=false% Use indent instead of skip (more options cf. docu)
,fromalign=center% alignment of the address
,fromrule=aftername% separate the address with a line?
,fromphone=true% print sender phone number
%,fromfax=true% print sender fax number
%, and so on and so forth...
}

With this, the template works as it is (so that everytime I call it
with "file | new from template ..." I am free to choose other options.

Bad luck: only after working on this answer I detected that in the
KOMA-letter2.lyx template within the LyX-application packet (in: /
Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/templates/
there is a functioning KOMA-letter2-template. "pagenumber=" is still
commented out, but the first uncommented option (here: "fromalign=")
begins without comma. So, this template would work too. Might be that
I, after upgrading LyX, had missed/failed to copy the templates newly
into my home-template-folder. Perhaps I should test this with other
disfunctioning lyx templates, too (when needed)...

Howsoever, the KOMA-letter2.lyx template now works correct on my
computer!

This is strange. This typo has been fixed for LyX 1.5.4 (and is still fixed in

Are you sure the template is no leftover from a previous release?

If you open the parent document first and from it the child documents
(right-click on the Include button and click on open, or just compile

Inside the new equation, type \tag and hit the space bar to get a blue
widget. In the widget, insert a cross reference to eq:property,
followed by a single quote. You need to load the AMS math package; if
you have LyX set to load it automatically, that will work (LyX will see
the \tag and load the package).

If you want a better looking prime, you can try the following:

\tag{\ensuremath{\ref{eq:property}^{\prime}}}

Again, type \tag followed by space. Inside that, type \ensuremath
followed by space. LyX will not recognize this as a command, so you
have to type \{ followed by space to get the braces for it. Inside
those braces, insert the cross-reference followed by \prime in a
superscript. I'm not sure whether this changes the font used for the
equation numerals, though.

eps to pdf converter/eps preview

Hi. I have an issue with previewing EPS files. I've seen in the list's

from ghostscript (below.) Both seem to complain about cmmi10, but I
don't know what this is: a missing font? If so, why doesn't latex
complain about it? What can I do about it?

By the way, imagemagick's converter gives me this error: "convert:

but the file is there...

Thanks

Or, finally, should I wait a bit longer for another 1.6 version to come,

I am running them side-by-side until 1.6 is ready for prime time. I
would be very careful about jumping into 1.6 with any critical work,
since it is still a bit unstable.

If you are brave, and really excited about trying out the new 1.6
features I suggest trying it out in small steps.

Also be warned that files are not (yet) backward-compatible - meaning
anything you edit in 1.6 will not function in 1.5 until 1.57 is

I am running them side-by-side until 1.6 is ready for prime time. I
would be very careful about jumping into 1.6 with any critical work,
since it is still a bit unstable.

If you are brave, and really excited about trying out the new 1.6
features I suggest trying it out in small steps.

Also be warned that files are not (yet) backward-compatible - meaning
anything you edit in 1.6 will not function in 1.5 until 1.57 is
released, which will provide backward-compatibility.

Note that doing this means using separate user directories, since the
preferences file and the like have different formats. So launch 1.6
using a command like:

/usr/local/bin/lyx -userdir ~/.lyx16/
and put that into a trivial shellscript so you don't get confused.

On Mac, drag the LyX app to somewhere other than where your current
1.5 app is located. The user preferences are stored in a separate
folder from 1.5 by default, so you are okay there.

I can't help on the Windows install...

And: James' warnings DO apply!

P.S. On Windows it is another story again (which I cannot tell).

That's part of the protocol you're using for citing sources, which is
a question for you and your editor(s), if any. Some disciplines have
particular conventions, which are often formalized in style guides.

In MLA style, for example, works are sometimes cited using the actual
printing date, with the first-publication date in square brackets:
"1976 [1600]".

So no one can give you a universal rule for a specific sort of
citation. It depends on who's going to be reading it, and what they'll
accept.

I see the same problem on Ubuntu 8.04 with LyX 1.5.5. on screen
appearance of \cdot and \times is the same, "x". Also, screen
translation of \succ fails, and just shows "succ".

Ubuntu supplies texlive 2007

What do you think might be wrong with the font installation? I was a
Fedora user until now, and the mathml package was installed with lyx
and it seemed to take care of things like this. I could use a little
Ubuntu/Debian related help. Which font is lyx looking for?

Paul, doesn't the old password work? Never mind, I'll email you the old

In general, if you wish to upload and don't know the password, ask on this
list and a developer will reply to you off-list with the password.

Thank you for this, it works fine.

The usual way; just insert a label in the equation and use a
cross-reference later. The cross-reference will pick up the contents of
the \tag{} command as if it were a normal equation number.

At least with Uwe's installer (and I suspect this is also true for

directory for 1.5.x in \Application Data\lyx15, and will put the

view PDF doesn't work with a certain mathematical formula

2008-09-02 Thread Eric Cavalcanti
I am writing a paper with lyx, and for some reason viewing of exporting DVI
or PDF stopped working at all. Not even an error message. I managed to
narrow it down to the mathematical formulas. Something happened along the
way that turned them into offending things. I can't even create a new
formula and copy and paste the contents of the old ones, only retyping from
scratch works.

Anybody has an idea what's going on? I would hate to have to retype all the
hundreds of formulas in this paper!

I'll try to attach a sample lyx file, but I suspect it will be rejected.

Thanks,
Eric

When trying to view the pdf file, lyx suggested to change the encoding to
utf8. I did, and the file compiles just fine.
BTW, I notice that in the endocing drop-down list there are utf8 and UTF8
(not to mention utf8-plain and utf8x). Does anyone know what the differences
between them are?

On further inspection, it turns out the culprit is the ellipsis, which you
input as a unicode character instead of \ldots.
