references between child documents
Hi, I'm using Lyx for a few weeks and have a few child documents. I'd like to reference a Chapter of child document A in child document B. I've a label in the chapter of child document A the one I want to reference. I've tried to use latex package xr but without positive results (probably I did it wrong in document LaTeX preamble). Can you help in making this work? Thanks, Joao

Number an equation according to a previous equation's number

It seems to me, that, in this template, Class Options mostly begin with a comma (,) - in order to get the options - even after different out- and uncommenting by the user - within the \KOMAoptions{} command comma-seperated, but my given template = in ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.5/templates/default the first option (not commented out in the template) begins with a comma: ,fromalign=center% alignment of the address and causes the latex-error. As another workarround (after the first aid of Jürgen) I uncommented the pagenumber=... option two lines before in the template - interesting: the first one of the outcommented options without a comma before (because uncommenting it was the first intention of the template authors?)! -This gives anyway a good solution, because nevertheless the pagenumber will only be typesetted if the letter has more than one page (and then only beginning with page 2), and in that case it normally should be wanted by the author of a letter. Now, also in LyX this part of my KOMA-letter2 template preamble looks like %% THE CLASS OPTIONS %% Remove preceeding '%' to uncomment an item \KOMAoptions{% %,headsepline=true% separate the header with a line on page 1 %,footsepline=true% separate the footer with a line on page 1 %pagenumber=botcenter% position of the page number (see docu) %,parskip=false% Use indent instead of skip (more options cf. docu) ,fromalign=center% alignment of the address ,fromrule=aftername% separate the address with a line? ,fromphone=true% print sender phone number %,fromfax=true% print sender fax number %, and so on and so forth... } With this, the template works as it is (so that everytime I call it with file | new from template ... I am free to choose other options. eps to pdf converter/eps preview
Hi. I have an issue with previewing EPS files. I've seen in the list's archives similar problems, but I think I'm missing something. I have an EPS diagram generated by Metapost from a Dia diagram. When I include the generated EPS image, the document is generated correctly by latex + dvipdf or latex + dvips + ps2pdf (but not by pdflatex.) Yet I get the typical Unable to convert to loadable format in the LyX preview. What is strange is that I do have the converter from Imagemagick and epstopdf installed. When I run these I get an error from ghostscript (below.) Both seem to complain about cmmi10, but I don't know what this is: a missing font? If so, why doesn't latex complain about it? What can I do about it? By the way, imagemagick's converter gives me this error: convert: Postscript delegate failed `ex1v2.eps': No such file or directory. but the file is there... What is the best way to upgrade to LyX 1.6?
Hi all, I am using LyX 1.5.5 and would like to upgrade to 1.6. What is the best way to do this? Should I *un*install 1.5.5 and then install 1.6, or just upload the new, install it, and it will erase the old? Or, finally, should I wait a bit longer for another 1.6 version to come, which is better then the LyX 1.6.0rc2. Thanks, Erez

Re: Reprinted material
killermike wrote: This is something I have have often wondered about too. For example, if you have a book that was written in 1600 but your copy is a 1976 paperback, what do you put for the date? That's part of the protocol you're using for citing sources, which is a question for you and your editor(s), if any. Some disciplines have particular conventions, which are often formalized in style guides. In MLA style, for example, works are sometimes cited using the actual printing date, with the first-publication date in square brackets: 1976 [1600]. That's because minute details of the text are sometimes important in literary and textual studies, and typographical errors, spelling changes, and the like can be introduced in subsequent printings. (Sometimes there are even bigger changes; James apparently rewrote the ending to _Daisy Miller_ at some point between editions, so there are two versions of the novel out there.) What it comes down to, though, is that there are no natural rules for how to cite anything. There are more-or-less arbitrary rules created by various publishing houses, professional organizations, journals, editors, and the like; there are guidelines and style guides; there are the whims of individuals. So no one can give you a universal rule for a specific sort of citation. It depends on who's going to be reading it, and what they'll accept. -- Michael Wojcik Micro Focus Rhetoric Writing, Michigan State University

eps to pdf converter/eps preview

Just give the 1.6-application a different name (e.g. LyX16.app), and the two versions happily co-exist. And: James' warnings DO apply! /Konrad P.S.

It seems to me, that, in this template, Class Options mostly begin with a comma (,) - in order to get the options - even after different out- and uncommenting by the user - within the \KOMAoptions{} command comma-seperated, but my given template => in ~/Library/Application Support/LyX-1.5/templates/default the first option (not commented out in the template) begins with a comma: ,fromalign=center% alignment of the address and causes the latex-error. As another workarround (after the first aid of Jürgen) I uncommented the "pagenumber=..." option two lines before in the template - interesting: the first one of the outcommented options without a comma before (because uncommenting it was the first intention of the template authors?)! -This gives anyway a good solution, because nevertheless the pagenumber will only be typesetted if the letter has more than one page (and then only beginning with page 2), and in that case it normally should be wanted by the author of a letter. Now, also in LyX this part of my KOMA-letter2 template preamble looks like %% THE CLASS OPTIONS %% Remove preceeding '%' to uncomment an item \KOMAoptions{% %,headsepline=true% separate the header with a line on page >1 %,footsepline=true% separate the footer with a line on page >1 %pagenumber=botcenter% position of the page number (see docu) %,parskip=false% Use indent instead of skip (more options cf. docu) ,fromalign=center% alignment of the address ,fromrule=aftername% separate the address with a line? ,fromphone=true% print sender phone number %,fromfax=true% print sender fax number %, and so on and so forth... } With this, the template works as it is (so that everytime I call it with "file | new from template ..." I am free to choose other options. Bad luck: only after working on this answer I detected that in the KOMA-letter2.lyx template within the LyX-application packet (in: / Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/templates/ there is a functioning KOMA-letter2-template. "pagenumber=" is still commented out, but the first uncommented option (here: "fromalign=") begins without comma. So, this template would work too. Might be that I, after upgrading LyX, had missed/failed to copy the templates newly into my home-template-folder. Inside the new equation, type \tag and hit the space bar to get a blue widget. In the widget, insert a cross reference to eq:property, followed by a single quote. You need to load the AMS math package; if you have LyX set to load it automatically, that will work (LyX will see the \tag and load the package). If you want a better looking prime, you can try the following: \tag{\ensuremath{\ref{eq:property}^{\prime}}} Again, type \tag followed by space. Inside that, type \ensuremath followed by space. LyX will not recognize this as a command, so you have to type \{ followed by space to get the braces for it. Inside those braces, insert the cross-reference followed by \prime in a superscript. I'm not sure whether this changes the font used for the equation numerals, though. /Paul
eps to pdf converter/eps preview
Hi. I have an issue with previewing EPS files. I've seen in the list's archives similar problems, but I think I'm missing something. I have an EPS diagram generated by Metapost from a Dia diagram. When I include the generated EPS image, the document is generated correctly by latex + dvipdf or latex + dvips + ps2pdf (but not by pdflatex.) Yet I get the typical "Unable to convert to loadable format" in the LyX preview. What is strange is that I do have the converter from Imagemagick and epstopdf installed. When I run these I get an error from ghostscript (below.) Both seem to complain about cmmi10, but I don't know what this is: a missing font? If so, why doesn't latex complain about it? What can I do about it? By the way, imagemagick's converter gives me this error: "convert: Postscript delegate failed `ex1v2.eps': No such file or directory." but the file is there...

On Mac, the installer creates a separate user-directory for 1.6, keeping the 1.5 user directory untouched (and the right one is used automatically). Just give the 1.6-application a different name (e.g. LyX16.app), and the two versions happily co-exist. And: James' warnings DO apply! /Konrad P.S. That's part of the protocol you're using for citing sources, which is a question for you and your editor(s), if any. Some disciplines have particular conventions, which are often formalized in style guides. In MLA style, for example, works are sometimes cited using the actual printing date, with the first-publication date in square brackets: "1976 [1600]". -- Michael Wojcik Micro Focus Rhetoric & Writing, Michigan State University

view PDF doesn't work with a certain mathematical formula
I am writing a paper with lyx, and for some reason viewing of exporting DVI or PDF stopped working at all. Not even an error message. I managed to narrow it down to the mathematical formulas. Something happened along the way that turned them into offending things. I can't even create a new formula and copy and paste the contents of the old ones, only retyping from scratch works. Anybody has an idea what's going on? I would hate to have to retype all the hundreds of formulas in this paper! I'll try to attach a sample lyx file, but I suspect it will be rejected. Thanks, Eric lyxbug.lyx Description: Binary data
Re: view PDF doesn't work with a certain mathematical formula
When trying to view the pdf file, lyx suggested to change the encoding to utf8. I did, and the file compiles just fine. BTW, I notice that in the endocing drop-down list there are utf8 and UTF8 (not to mention utf8-plain and utf8x). Does anyone know what the differences between them are? On further inspection, it turns out the culprit is the ellipsis, which you input as a unicode character instead of \ldots.
