using customised .sty package

Hello

I use the option Sweave to insert R code into my lyx documents. I like 
to modify the default sweave.sty to obtain customised features. When 
modified, I then just put the .sty file into the same folder as my .tex 
and run latex: so the customised one is used rather than the original 
.sty (well this work at least with package Sweave, I don't know if this 
is the proper way).


I would love to do it with lyx but the problem is it uses the default 
package even if I put the .syt package in the same folder as my .lyx 
file. The solution I found is to move myself the customised package into 
the tmp (on Linux) directory and then it works. But is there a way to do 
it automatically? I have lyx 1.5.5 and R 2.7 on Ubuntu 8.04

The proper way it to rename the package if you change something.
This is mandatory for packages under the LaTeX 3 license. It ensures that no
confusion arises from different behaviour of packges with the same name.
(It will not be a big problem if you keep the modified package for yourself
but still renaming is a good idea.)

You could rather store the modified package somewhere in the tex path. On my
Debian system, ~/texmf/tex/latex would be the right place, I suppose it is
the same in Ubuntu.

I´m using Lyx 1.6.1 on OSX 10.5.5 with BibDesk 1.3.18 in german language. Is
there any possibility to use mutated vowels in the BibDesk-references in a
way that Lyx could handle them? When I enter them the plain way I get errors
in Lyx. (For example: »Package inputenc Error: Keyboard character used is
undefined«).

Sorry in case it is mentioned somewhere in the Wiki, I´m not able to find
it.

One solution is to enter them using LaTeX format: Eg, \u. I don't think 
BibTeX can handle unicode.

The safest way is to encode them in the bibtex file in a form TeX can  
handle directly:

Ah, this is making more sense.  I'm used to most of the common ones already
being there, or being installed as-needed.  (Also, I apologize for the delay

I found that port, actually, but after compiling it I found that LyX doesn't
seem to recognize any packages I install with it.  I'm not really sure

I'll have to look into that.  I didn't realize there was one, since I didn't

Lyx 1.6.1 can't see my Bibtex references!

Hello, I used Lyx 1.6.0 with Biblatex in a italian document.
In order to mantain a lot of different languages encodings in my bibliography, 
I used to save my .bib file with a UTF encoding, and then in the Language 
options of Lyx, select a UTF extended encoding for my Document. I can't 
remember why I didn't choose other encodings, anyway, in this manner everything 
worked perfect. TILL I started to use LyX 1.6.1: now it seems that LyX can't 
read anything in the UTF .bib file (so the references dialogue doesn't show 
anything) although BibLaTeX can read everything fine and produces a perfect 
output. The problem is editing: now I can't select my references!
The trick I'm using is have 2 identical .bib files in different encodings, one, 
in a simple encoding, indicated in LyX bibliography (which is by purpose put in 
a note in order to let BibLaTeX do all the job), the other, in UTF, in the 
preamble's BibLaTeX code.
But this is annoying: everytime I change my bibliography file I have to produce 
2 files! How to have back LyX 1.6.1 read a UTF .bib file???
P.S. If you wonder what BibLaTeX is, nevermind - the question is: how to have 
LyX read a UTF .bib file?

IMO such behaviour is somehow close to correct. LyX do not support
BibLaTeX officially, so if it cannot handle UTF .bib files, it is
compatible with BibTeX.

Spellchecking / Aspell problems

I installed the mac developer tools and Aspell, but I couldn´t get  
spellchecking to work. Do I have to install dictionaries first? How?  
Spellchecking doesn´t even work in english… Here is the message I get  
from Lyx (1.6):


Das Rechtschreibprogramm konnte nicht gestartet werden
Error: The file /usr/local/lib/aspell-0.60/english can not be opened  
for reading.

(German: Spellchecking could not be opened)

What could I do that it works?

On the mac, I used Fink to install ispell.

That worked just fine.  Then you don't even need the developer tools -  
unless you want to compile from source...

PDF is not an option, since this is used internally by LyX to produce an
eps file readable by plain latex.

You know there is stuff to set in
1) LyX-Preferences-Language Settings-Spellchecker
AND
2) Document-Settings-Language

$ which aspell
/usr/local/bin/aspell

and my dictionaries sit in

$ locate de.multi
/usr/local/lib/aspell-0.60/de.multi

and LyX finds them both automatically.

If you just type aspell in terminal, it should tell you what dicts it 
has. If this does not work, it's not installed properly.

Maybe make uninstall ?
But no need. A new sudo make install will overwrite things anyhow.

Don't use Fink (it's mostly deprecated). If anything, use MacPorts (and 
install the aspell and aspell-dict-de-alt). But for this, you probably 
should remove the other aspell first.

100% yes. I just checked, because I have still version 1.6.0 installed. LyX 
1.6.0, same file, no problems. I'm 99% sure is a v1.6.1 issue.
I found that if I select In Documents - options - language the options default 
language encoding, Lyx can find the references in a UTF-coded .bib files.
 Too bad that when it comes to compile, LyX can't handle some of those UTF 
characters (just a bunch and not the weirdest ones) resulting in some warnings 
concerning inputenc.
 If, on the other hand, I tell LyX to recognize UTF in language options, it 
then can't see the references in a UTF-coded .bib file!
 And of course, if I use a common-coded .bib file AND the default language 
encoding, the result is that the output will display badly somme characters.
And I repeat it: LyX 1.6.0 could see my UTF.-coded references

I think this is possible by choosing a German BibTeX style (in the  
dialog that pops up if you click on the BibTex generated  
Bibliography inset. I have never used them, but I would guess that  
the gerXXX styles are for German bibliographies.

Well, I found this answer to be a little rude, and this moved me to 
answer. Maybe it was not the intention, but it looks to me that way. 
What is wrong with asking LyX to be adapted to one's needs? Nothing, 
in my opinion. If LyX is becoming a more and more powerful and 
comfortable to use tool is thanks to the developers, but also thanks 
to all the people that suggest feature improvements (based on their 
own needs). A different thing is demanding your request to be 
fulfilled! But that was not what bigblop did. He was just wondering 
about any potential plans for showing separate pages in LyX. 


I guess he was just not aware that this is actually not feasible in 
LyX, as Richard G. Heck kindly explained.
What if it would be feasible ? Would it be an added value or is it too 
the-non-tex-way ?

I don't see the value myself. As I said before, in LaTeX (unlike in 
Word) page breaks can change by the character, as paragraphs are 
re-broken and floats are repositioned. I guess that makes me think that 
it isn't even feasible---where do floats appear, vis-a-vis page breaks? 
But even if it were, it encourages one to think in the wrong terms, at 
least during the document-creation process. One should only want to see 
(and one only really needs to see) page breaks once the document is 
nearly done. At that point, one can ViewDVI, and fix as necessary.


A good implementation of reverse search would solve most of the problems 
that this workflow creates.

Well - it is not only 94 bit -
It is also Hardy (8.04) for which only 1.6.0 rc3 is available (And I
would prefer not to compile from source).

Is there a chance to build the binaries for all the most recent Ubuntu
releases and possibly even create a repository for those which could
be added in apt? That would really be brilliant and make it much
easier for normal users to use the newest versions of LyX.

The proper way it to rename the package if you change something.
This is mandatory for packages under the LaTeX 3 license. It ensures that no
confusion arises from different behaviour of packges with the same name.
(It will not be a big problem if you keep the modified package for yourself
but still renaming is a good idea.)

You could rather store the modified package somewhere in the tex path. On my
Debian system, ~/texmf/tex/latex would be the right place, I suppose it is

there any possibility to use mutated vowels in the BibDesk-references in a
way that Lyx could handle them? When I enter them the plain way I get errors
in Lyx. (For example: »Package inputenc Error: Keyboard character used is
undefined«).

Sorry in case it is mentioned somewhere in the Wiki, I´m not able to find
it.

One solution is to enter them using LaTeX format: Eg, \u. I don't think 
BibTeX can handle unicode.

The safest way is to encode them in the bibtex file in a form TeX can  
handle directly:

Ah, this is making more sense.  I'm used to most of the common ones already
being there, or being installed as-needed.  (Also, I apologize for the delay

I found that port, actually, but after compiling it I found that LyX doesn't
seem to recognize any packages I install with it.  I'm not really sure

Lyx 1.6.1 can't see my Bibtex references!

Hello, I used Lyx 1.6.0 with Biblatex in a italian document.
In order to mantain a lot of different languages encodings in my bibliography, 
I used to save my .bib file with a UTF encoding, and then in the Language 
options of Lyx, select a UTF extended encoding for my Document. I can't 
remember why I didn't choose other encodings, anyway, in this manner everything 
worked perfect. TILL I started to use LyX 1.6.1: now it seems that LyX can't 
read anything in the UTF .bib file (so the references dialogue doesn't show 
anything) although BibLaTeX can read everything fine and produces a perfect 
output. The problem is editing: now I can't select my references!
The trick I'm using is have 2 identical .bib files in different encodings, one, 
in a simple encoding, indicated in LyX bibliography (which is by purpose put in 
a note in order to let BibLaTeX do all the job), the other, in UTF, in the 
preamble's BibLaTeX code.
But this is annoying: everytime I change my bibliography file I have to produce 
2 files! How to have back LyX 1.6.1 read a UTF .bib file???
P.S. If you wonder what BibLaTeX is, nevermind - the question is: how to have 
LyX read a UTF .bib file?

IMO such behaviour is somehow close to correct. LyX do not support
BibLaTeX officially, so if it cannot handle UTF .bib files, it is
compatible with BibTeX.

I installed the mac developer tools and Aspell, but I couldn´t get  
spellchecking to work. Do I have to install dictionaries first? How?  
Spellchecking doesn´t even work in english… Here is the message I get  
from Lyx (1.6):


Das Rechtschreibprogramm konnte nicht gestartet werden
Error: The file /usr/local/lib/aspell-0.60/english can not be opened  
for reading.

(German: Spellchecking could not be opened)

What could I do that it works?

On the mac, I used Fink to install ispell.

That worked just fine.  Then you don't even need the developer tools -

PDF is not an option, since this is used internally by LyX to produce an
eps file readable by plain latex.

You know there is stuff to set in
1) LyX-Preferences-Language Settings-Spellchecker
AND
2) Document-Settings-Language

$ which aspell
/usr/local/bin/aspell

and my dictionaries sit in

$ locate de.multi
/usr/local/lib/aspell-0.60/de.multi

and LyX finds them both automatically.

If you just type aspell in terminal, it should tell you what dicts it 
has. If this does not work, it's not installed properly.

Maybe make uninstall ?
But no need. A new sudo make install will overwrite things anyhow.

Don't use Fink (it's mostly deprecated). If anything, use MacPorts (and 
install the aspell and aspell-dict-de-alt). But for this, you probably 
should remove the other aspell first.

100% yes. I just checked, because I have still version 1.6.0 installed. LyX 
1.6.0, same file, no problems. I'm 99% sure is a v1.6.1 issue.
I found that if I select In Documents - options - language the options default 
language encoding, Lyx can find the references in a UTF-coded .bib files.
 Too bad that when it comes to compile, LyX can't handle some of those UTF 
characters (just a bunch and not the weirdest ones) resulting in some warnings 
concerning inputenc.
 If, on the other hand, I tell LyX to recognize UTF in language options, it 
then can't see the references in a UTF-coded .bib file!
 And of course, if I use a common-coded .bib file AND the default language 
encoding, the result is that the output will display badly somme characters.
And I repeat it: LyX 1.6.0 could see my UTF.-coded references

Note, however, that bibtex itself cannot handle unicode. bibtex8 neither.

I think this is possible by choosing a German BibTeX style (in the  
dialog that pops up if you click on the BibTex generated  
Bibliography inset. I have never used them, but I would guess that  
the gerXXX styles are for German bibliographies.

Well, I found this answer to be a little rude, and this moved me to 
answer. Maybe it was not the intention, but it looks to me that way. 
What is wrong with asking LyX to be adapted to one's needs? Nothing, 
in my opinion. If LyX is becoming a more and more powerful and 
comfortable to use tool is thanks to the developers, but also thanks 
to all the people that suggest feature improvements (based on their 
own needs). A different thing is demanding your request to be 
fulfilled! But that was not what bigblop did. He was just wondering 
about any potential plans for showing separate pages in LyX.

LyX, as Richard G. Heck kindly explained.
What if it would be feasible ? Would it be an added value or is it too

I don't see the value myself. As I said before, in LaTeX (unlike in 
Word) page breaks can change by the character, as paragraphs are 
re-broken and floats are repositioned. I guess that makes me think that 
it isn't even feasible---where do floats appear, vis-a-vis page breaks? 
But even if it were, it encourages one to think in the wrong terms, at 
least during the document-creation process. One should only want to see 
(and one only really needs to see) page breaks once the document is 
nearly done. At that point, one can ViewDVI, and fix as necessary.


A good implementation of reverse search would solve most of the problems 
that this workflow creates.

Well - it is not only 94 bit -
It is also Hardy (8.04) for which only 1.6.0 rc3 is available (And I
would prefer not to compile from source).

Is there a chance to build the binaries for all the most recent Ubuntu
releases and possibly even create a repository for those which could
be added in apt? That would really be brilliant and make it much
easier for normal users to use the newest versions of LyX.

If it is under Windows, there is a chance to check whether it is
encoding problem or not. Open LyX by lyx.exe (it opens with console
window). Then errors from iconv are reported there. I found my
encoding bugs in document this way, when I was not able to produce
output.

One solution is to enter them using LaTeX format: Eg, \"u. I don't think 
BibTeX can handle unicode.

The safest way is to encode them in the bibtex file in a form TeX can  
handle directly:


author = {Danilo Beuche and Ant{\^o}nio Augusto Fr{\"o}hlich

Ah, this is making more sense.  I'm used to most of the common ones already
being there, or being installed as-needed.  (Also, I apologize for the delay
in my response: I originally posted using the Nabble interface linked to on
lyx.org, but for some reason replies don't show up there, so I didn't think
anyone had responded.  I was expecting something like the Google Groups
interface for usenet...I guess Nabble doesn't work that way?)

I found that port, actually, but after compiling it I found that LyX doesn't
seem to recognize any packages I install with it.  I'm not really sure
what's going on there.  The MiKTeX PM reports that the packages are
installed, though.

I'll have to look into that.  I didn't realize there was one, since I didn't
see it in the Ubuntu repositories.  (I'm afraid that on Linux I've been

Lyx 1.6.1 can't see my Bibtex references!

Hello, I used Lyx 1.6.0 with Biblatex in a italian document.
In order to mantain a lot of different languages encodings in my bibliography, 
I used to save my .bib file with a UTF encoding, and then in the Language 
options of Lyx, select a UTF extended encoding for my Document. I can't 
remember why I didn't choose other encodings, anyway, in this manner everything 
worked perfect. TILL I started to use LyX 1.6.1: now it seems that LyX can't 
read anything in the UTF .bib file (so the references dialogue doesn't show 
anything) although BibLaTeX can read everything fine and produces a perfect 
output. The problem is editing: now I can't select my references!
The trick I'm using is have 2 identical .bib files in different encodings, one, 
in a simple encoding, indicated in LyX bibliography (which is by purpose put in 
a note in order to let BibLaTeX do all the job), the other, in UTF, in the 
preamble's BibLaTeX code.
But this is annoying: everytime I change my bibliography file I have to produce 
2 files! How to have back LyX 1.6.1 read a UTF .bib file???
P.S. If you wonder what BibLaTeX is, nevermind - the question is: how to have 
LyX read a UTF .bib file?

IMO such behaviour is somehow close to correct. LyX do not support
BibLaTeX officially, so if it cannot handle UTF .bib files, it is
compatible with BibTeX.

I may not have right.

I installed the mac developer tools and Aspell, but I couldn´t get  
spellchecking to work. Do I have to install dictionaries first? How?  
Spellchecking doesn´t even work in english… Here is the message I get  
from Lyx (1.6):


Das Rechtschreibprogramm konnte nicht gestartet werden
Error: The file "/usr/local/lib/aspell-0.60/english" can not be opened  
for reading.

(German: Spellchecking could not be opened)

What could I do that it works?

On the mac, I used Fink to install ispell.

That worked just fine.  Then you don't even need the developer tools -  
unless you want to compile from source...

eps2 may be a good option, but using -compress can make the resulting
postscript file very slow to decode, especially on older devices. I
have played with these options before, and there is just no easy
solution for it.

The best option is probably to output to PDF instead. It has a number
of good compression algorithms available for bitmap images.

PDF is not an option, since this is used internally by LyX to produce an
eps file readable by plain latex.

You know there is stuff to set in
1) LyX->Preferences->Language Settings->Spellchecker
AND
2) Document->Settings->Language

My aspell binary sits in

$ which aspell
/usr/local/bin/aspell

and my dictionaries sit in

$ locate de.multi
/usr/local/lib/aspell-0.60/de.multi

and LyX finds them both automatically.

If you just type "aspell" in terminal, it should tell you what dicts it 
has. If this does not work, it's not installed properly.

Maybe make uninstall ?
But no need. A new sudo make install will overwrite things anyhow.

Don't use Fink (it's mostly deprecated). If anything, use MacPorts (and 
install the aspell and aspell-dict-de-alt). But for this, you probably 
should remove the other aspell first.

100% yes. I just checked, because I have still version 1.6.0 installed. LyX 
1.6.0, same file, no problems. I'm 99% sure is a v1.6.1 issue.
I found that if I select In Documents - options - language the options "default 
language encoding", Lyx can find the references in a UTF-coded .bib files.
 Too bad that when it comes to compile, LyX can't handle some of those UTF 
characters (just a bunch and not the weirdest ones) resulting in some warnings 
concerning "inputenc".
 If, on the other hand, I tell LyX to recognize UTF in language options, it 
then can't see the references in a UTF-coded .bib file!
 And of course, if I use a common-coded .bib file AND the default language 
encoding, the result is that the output will display badly somme characters.
And I repeat it: LyX 1.6.0 could see my UTF.-coded references

Nope, that's a “unique feature” of Debian and its derivates
that use dpkg.

Note, however, that bibtex itself cannot handle unicode. bibtex8 neither.

Sorry, I do not the codes for these quote symbols. I also send this

I think this is possible by choosing a German BibTeX style (in the  
dialog that pops up if you click on the "BibTex generated  
Bibliography" inset. I have never used them, but I would guess that  
the "gerXXX" styles are for German bibliographies.

Well, I found this answer to be a little rude, and this moved me to 
answer. Maybe it was not the intention, but it looks to me that way. 
What is wrong with asking LyX to be adapted to one's needs? Nothing, 
in my opinion. If LyX is becoming a more and more powerful and 
comfortable to use tool is thanks to the developers, but also thanks 
to all the people that suggest feature improvements (based on their 
own needs). A different thing is demanding your request to be 
fulfilled! But that was not what bigblop did. He was just wondering 
about any potential plans for showing separate pages in LyX. 


I guess he was just not aware that this is actually not feasible in 
LyX, as Richard G. Heck kindly explained.
What if it would be feasible ? Would it be an added value or is it too 
the-non-tex-way ?

I don't see the value myself. As I said before, in LaTeX (unlike in 
Word) page breaks can change by the character, as paragraphs are 
re-broken and floats are repositioned. I guess that makes me think that 
it isn't even feasible---where do floats appear, vis-a-vis page breaks? 
But even if it were, it encourages one to think in the wrong terms, at 
least during the document-creation process. One should only want to see 
(and one only really needs to see) page breaks once the document is 
nearly done. At that point, one can View>DVI, and fix as necessary.


A good implementation of reverse search would solve most of the problems 
that this workflow creates.

Well - it is not only 94 bit -
It is also Hardy (8.04) for which only 1.6.0 rc3 is available (And I
would prefer not to compile from source).

Is there a chance to build the binaries for all the most recent Ubuntu
releases and possibly even create a repository for those which could
be added in apt? That would really be brilliant and make it much
easier for "normal" users to use the newest versions of LyX.
