Hello,

The new lyx 1.6.2 uses the elsart.cls or the new elsarticle.cls document

Thanks,

viewd it using pdflatex rather than dvips. It displayed properly.

So, is this a 'feature' of the memoir class, or does LyX need adjustment?

I cannot tell you. If you could further isolate the problem, this would

noone else will experience or a general problem or a stale file/command.)

Re: Caption width in wrapped figures

2009-04-09 Thread E. Kaplan

Thanks for the help and the information regarding the various formats.
Before I posted the question, I did try to use the pdf version of the
figure, making sure it had no white region around the edges. I noticed
that it did leave less of a white area around the picture, but it was
still not what I wanted, which is the complete control provided by
Latex's independent specification of width for the caption and the graphics.
By the way, what is supposed to go into the Latex options on the third
tab of the figure settings? When I specify the width in there (say:
width=2in), Lyx follows the instructions, which seem to overlap with the
scale instructions on the first tab.

EK

Uwe Stöhr wrote:

Ehud Kaplan schrieb:

But the white space around the graphics itself persists.

Because your image contains the whitespace. I converted your image to
a PDF as I assume that your document should also be a PDF and removed
the whitespace. (You can insert images to LyX in every format, but
they can only be embedded to the resulting document PDF output when
they are in the format PDF, JPG, PNG, or GIF. When you use another
image format like EPS, LyX has to convert the images to one of the
four formats in the background which extends the document compile time
when viewing/exporting it.)

There were two other problems:

- you scaled the image absolutely, but when you want to control the
whitespace, you need to scale the image relatively to the column
width. When you e.g. set your wrap float to 50% column width and do
the same for your image you get no whitespace. When you set the image
to 40% column width, you get some whitespace around it.

- when you want the figure centered you can set its paragraph to
centered and don't need to use a LaTeX command But when using wrapped
figures one often wants the image to be aligned with the text column
border. So in your case I would set the paragraph where the image is
in to right aligned.

In a separate email I attached the example file.

Using Memoir Class: Page Numbering Issues

2009-04-09 Thread Rich Shepard

I've not used the memoir(book) class before and thought that I'd give it a
try for workshop attendee material. I'm having problems with page numbering:

-- The title page is numbered '1' but should be blank.
-- I set the default \pagestyle{empty} in the preamble but that did not
remove the title page number.
  -- Frontmatter pagination is OK.
-- Mainmatter pagination starts on the Part 1 page with number '3' despite
the command \setcounter{page}{1} in front of it. Chapter 1 than
begins on page 5.

I've attached the first 195 lines from the .lyx file.

I also see commands I don't recognize from previous versions, such as the
doubled 'newline' within the title and author environments.

Your suggestions on how to properly set up this class so I correct these
pagination errors will be much appreciated.

Warnings/advices after installing?

2009-04-09 Thread Piero Faustini
Hello,
I just re-installed LyX and MikTeX on WinXP and once again forgot to install
italian and other languages hyphenation support in MikTeX. This made me think
that as it is something I always have to do after installing MikTeX, LyX
installer should someway warn the new user to check for every option in MikTeX,
included, of course hyphenation patterns and language support. I can remember
that the 1st time I used LyX (and LaTeX) I discovered this only after some
weeks of various problems with my language.
Just a warning would be very useful for new users.

The caption format, and width can only controlled by the caption package, so you need here some
preamble commands. The rest: image format, image part, float width and depth, whitespace around
image, and the image alignment can be done via the float dialog. For a detailed description of
caption formatting and much more, have a look at the EmbeddedObjects manual chap. 3.

Thanks for the help. I think I did would you advised. The publishers zip
does unfortunately not contain any help. It contains a file
document.tex. Applying latex or pdflatex gives a lot of complains on
a.o. font sizes but ends up with files that are visually identical to
the also provided document.pdf. So that seems to work. However, tex3lyx
gives Could not find layout file for textclass Rpd. So there is
probably an unsolved install problem. Any idea?

Did sudo chmod a+r Rpd.cls and sudo mktexlsr which did not complain.
Than as a kind of brute force attempt copied all the other files to both
~/.lyx/layouts and /.lyx/templates.

This seems wrong. As the publisher provides a (La)TeX template, all of this
files should be sorted into the texmf tree. Maybe the zip comes even with an
INSTALL or REAME explaining details?

Then you should try a simple LaTeX example (again, maybe, there is one or a
template in the zip). If this runs, you could start to think about
integration with LyX.

tex2lyx on the file document.tex results in Could not find layout file
for textclass Rpd.

You will find details in the HelpCustomization guide (how to install a new
LaTeX class). If there are specific problems left, ask again (best by
giving a minimal example).

But I can't add any citation in the text in Lyx after I added the

If you click on BibTeX Generated Bibliography at the end of your document,
it should bring up a box that says Databases. The name of your .bib file
should be listed in there; if not, browse for it and add it.

Then when you want to insert a citation, go to Insert-Citation in the
menu, you should get a list of all the citations in your database on the
left. Higlight one, click add (it will show up on the right), then click
OK.

You might have non-latin characters in your bibtex file.

If so, remove them and it should work.

okular dvi viewer failed in lyx

2009-04-09 Thread Russell Davie

Hi All
I just installed Lyx 1.6.1 and tested out the dvi viewer on intro.lyx.
The default dvi viewer, okular, came up and then crashed.

A Fatal Error Occurred
The application Okular (okular) crashed and caused the signal 11
(SIGSEGV).

Lyx stayed open.

OS: Ubuntu 8.10
default dvi viewer: okular

this happens with kdvi as well.

okular and kdvi works with other dvi I have, but not the dvi lyx makes.

also when changing the dvi viewer preference in
Tools - Preferences - file formats - DVI
from xdg-open to xdiv, xdvi opens but presents a blank page.
If the window size of xdvi is re-sized to a fraction smaller, the text appears.

any help appreciated

Yours,

On a related note: it seems like it gives the addresses a and b and
gives the corresponding authors c and d. Does anyone else have this
problem, and/or have any ideas how to fix it?

Thanks!

Interesting Failure in 1.6.2

2009-04-09 Thread Rich Shepard

In all the years I've used LyX I've never seen this before: while checking
the spelling of my document, a message box popped up reading, The
spellchecker has failed. No word lists can be found for the language
'latex'.

The last word checked (which I had added to my personal spelling
dictionary was 'www' in the URL for our web site.

How strange!

no citation available though bib was imported

2009-04-09 Thread Markus Brandstetter
Hi!
Please excuse this newbie question:

I imported my Endnote library into BibTex using the BibTexConverter as
described here (http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/Programs#toc12). This seems
to have worked fine because I can also open the .bib-bibliography with
JabRef.

But I can't add any citation in the text in Lyx after I added the
bibliography at the bottom of the document. It doesn't give me any
available citations to select. What am I doing wrong?
(I entered 'apalike' as the bibliography style and 'natbib' as citation
style.)

I'm using Windows XP, Endnote X, Lyx 1.6.2.

Thank you so much!

OK.

HTH.

If the window size of xdvi is re-sized to a fraction smaller, the text appears.

any help appreciated

cheers

This is configurable. Write in your LaTeX preamble:

\setkomafont{sectioning}{\bfseries}

By the way, what is supposed to go into the "Latex options" on the third
tab of the figure settings? When I specify the width in there (say:
width=2in), Lyx follows the instructions, which seem to overlap with the
scale instructions on the first tab.

Yours,

I've not tried plain PDF, but viewing in pdflatex works fine, and it

I don't understand what you miss, I can control everything: the image width, the float width, the

It is not clear to me how it is done.
I see on the first tab of the float setting (graphics) the setting for

and on the second tab (clipping) facilities for cropping and positioning
the graphics.
How do you deal with the caption width? I know I can do that with the

but are these facilities in the settings for the float? Is that what I
put in the Latex Options on the third tab?
