Yes, I've seen this too. Not sure what to do. We could disable AMS always 
for XeTeX, if necessary, but I guess we need to do some more research yet.

 chapter template file, XeTeX compilation now complains about the use of '

The reason for this is that XeTeX now uses polyglossia, which does not know 
these \addto commands (which are from babel). Are these templates shipped 
with LyX? If so, we need to embrace these calls in

 3. custom character-style error
 Finally, and this is more an annoyance than an impediment, my custom
 character style module (based on info from Rob

 is undefined because of class conversion from article to article' (and the

please note that memoir's \pagenote and \foottopagenote use in Lyx currently
suffers from two   problems:

1. a 2-paragraphs (or more) pagenote produced with Lyx 's footnote command
and \foottopagenote will fail and produce a Latex error. One paragraph notes
are okay.

2. similarly, a pagenote produced with Lyx's footnote command and
\foottopagenote cannot contain \index commands unless they are protected
(you need to insert a \protect command as ERT **immediately before** the
\index command).

Lars Madsen, the maintainer of memoir, is working on both issues (the first
one is trivial, apparently, the second one less so).

problems with lyx2lyx after moving to beta2, from svn

Hi,

I've been using the svn version for the last 6 months. Today I tried beta 2,
and it seems to be incompatible with my templates and files produced with
the svn version (!).

This is what I get:

/home/quesada/Dropbox/exist.de/exist.de.16.lyx is from an older version of
LyX and the lyx2lyx script failed to convert it.
Warning: 410: Format not supported.
Warning: Quitting.
Error: Conversion script failed

/home/quesada/.lyx/templates/defaults.lyx is from an older version of LyX
and the lyx2lyx script failed to convert it.
Error: Could not read template

What was the workaround for this? I know there's one, but cannot find it...

I'm going to guess that somehow the upgrade has failed to upgrade the 
lyx2lyx script that is being called. Unless something went very badly, 
format 410 ought to be supported by the lyx2lyx script. It is, in fact, 
the last supported format.

By chance, did you copy a specific copy of lyx2lyx in your user
folder? Try to run beta2 on a fresh ~/.lyx folder.

I had tried that. But it's difficult to find anything useful in the mass of
debugging data it produces. What is Lyx supposed to say when it runs (or,
rather, were it to run) biber? Is there a specific Lyx module that is in
charge of it?

so that they are executed after polyglossia (and babel).

This should be fixed as well in the next release. The trick is to load all 
AMS packages before fontspec (which itself loads xunicode, which has to be 
loaded after the AMS packages). See

Yes, it should suffice to 'mv .lyx .lyx.bak' or similar. Then, if it
still fails, try removing the lyx installation completely and check
specifically that lyx2lyx gets removed, and then re-install.
Otherwise, make sure that you're actually trying to use 2.0.0 beta and
not 1.6.8. ;)

Yes, but the file format is not that mature. 
I didn't expect such big audience for it.

Currently it's as simple as one header line and one line per word with utf-8 
charset.

The biggest problem with this idea is the LyX file format change.
After 2.0 release it will remain fixed AFAIK - and this means the feature
will be a target for the 2.1 cycle. We want to get 2.0 out soon.

I'm running the latest LyX on Mac OS X. I've had the spellchecker work fine in 
the past, using aspell. I've just tried to spellcheck a new file, and strange 
things are happening. Quite frequently, words that are spelt correctly are 
marked as incorrect. For example Introduction, identification, 
differentially and alternatively come up as incorrect. What's even stranger 
is that the suggested spelling is the same identical word! I click Replace 
continually, but obviously the new word is then seen as misspelt. Oddly 
enough, if I add the word to the personal dictionary, it works next time. Is 
there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Hi Pete,

please check in preferences the spell checker type you are using.
The default has changed to Macs native spell checker.

Please never disable AMS always but not AMS automatically: this would
lead to errors as soon as an AMS-requiring construct is put into the
document.

 This should be fixed as well in the next release. The trick is to load all 
 AMS packages before fontspec (which itself loads xunicode, which has to be 
 loaded after the AMS packages). See

I am glad you found the core of the problem.
(BTW: the current version of fontspec does no longer load xunicode, but

However, I also found that even if I do not check any of the AMS math
options, LyX 2 behaves as if the Load AMS math automatically option
were set:

a) the AMS symbols toolbox is enabled.
b) inserting a symbol from it inserts \usepackage{amssymb} in the preamble.
c) even writing \Rrightarrow in a math box (converts this to the symbol and)
   inserts \usepackage{amssymb} in the preamble.
   
Because of c), a work-around with disabling AMS math in the checkbox and
loading in the LaTeX preamble will fail.

Yes, I've seen this too. Not sure what to do. We could disable AMS always 
for XeTeX, if necessary, but I guess we need to do some more research yet.

 Beyond that, changing to the automatic AMS math package in the thesis
 document introduces new errors. In a brand new, entirely unmodified
 chapter template file, XeTeX compilation now complains about the use of '
 \addto \extrasenglish{' in the preamble (used to define cross reference
 identifiers). Is this another conflict between XeTeX and ... is it
 *hyperref * these overrides refer to?

The reason for this is that XeTeX now uses polyglossia, which does not know 
these \addto commands (which are from babel). Are these templates shipped

 Processing the tex source directly, It complained that the paragraph was

 conflict with the endnotes package).  The memoir commands are not the same,
 but the class does provide all the same functionality, and a little more I
 believe.  I've been using memoir for  a short while, and so I have a little
 familiarity there, and I tried to hack something up from things I found
 before in the memoir manual.

 Caveats:
 *I'm new to the whole LaTeX thing, so it's probably pretty ugly, and the
 long way around, but it is working fine for me here (LyX 2.0 beta).
 *this will only work with the memoir class because it is built on
 class-specific commands.

 I wasn't sure exactly what result you wanted, but basically, what I've
 done is made memoir convert footnotes to endnotes, and hang the paragraphs
 off of the note numbers (I assume that is what you meant by indented for
 all lines).  There are two possible options (available by
 commenting/uncommenting a few appropriate lines): either to hang the
 paragraphs of of a superscript without a space, or to hang the paragraphs
 off of normal text size numbers with a period and a space.

 You should be able to copy the code below straight into the preamble
 section of your document settings, and then the only thing you have to do is
 put the following into ERT in LyX at the end of each chapter:

 \clearpage
 \printpagenotes*


 The memoir package manual has a lot more detail on endnotes in section
 17.4, and some helpful background in chapter 12.

Yes, I've seen this too. Not sure what to do. We could disable AMS always
for XeTeX, if necessary, but I guess we need to do some more research yet.

   

2. conflict in thesis template

chapter template file, XeTeX compilation now complains about the use of '

The reason for this is that XeTeX now uses polyglossia, which does not know

3. custom character-style error
Finally, and this is more an annoyance than an impediment, my custom
character style module generates an *Undefined flex inset *error: 'Flex inset

made within Document Settings, not on view, etc. Is there something in my
module that might cause this?

Processing the tex source directly, It complained that the
paragraph was ended before \gather* was complete.  I just had
to remove the empty line before \end{gather*} and the document
processed all right.

I guess this is a bug...

A known bug. It has been fixed for the next release. Still, thanks

I've been using the svn version for the last 6 months. Today I tried beta 2,
and it seems to be incompatible with my templates and files produced with
the svn version (!).

This is what I get:

LyX and the lyx2lyx script failed to convert it.
Warning: 410: Format not supported.
Warning: Quitting.
Error: Conversion script failed

What was the workaround for this? I know there's one, but cannot find it...

I'm going to guess that somehow the upgrade has failed to upgrade the 
lyx2lyx script that is being called. Unless something went very badly, 
format 410 ought to be supported by the lyx2lyx script. It is, in fact, 
the last supported format.

By chance, did you copy a specific copy of lyx2lyx in your user
folder? Try to run beta2 on a fresh ~/.lyx folder.

I had tried that. But it's difficult to find anything useful in the mass of
debugging data it produces. What is Lyx supposed to say when it runs (or,
rather, were it to run) biber? Is there a specific Lyx module that is in
charge of it?

This should be fixed as well in the next release. The trick is to load all 
AMS packages before fontspec (which itself loads xunicode, which has to be 
loaded after the AMS packages). See

Yes, it should suffice to 'mv .lyx .lyx.bak' or similar. Then, if it
still fails, try removing the lyx installation completely and check
specifically that lyx2lyx gets removed, and then re-install.
Otherwise, make sure that you're actually trying to use 2.0.0 beta and
not 1.6.8. ;)

The biggest problem with this idea is the LyX file format change.
After 2.0 release it will remain fixed AFAIK - and this means the feature
will be a target for the 2.1 cycle. We want to get 2.0 out soon.

Hi,

I'm running the latest LyX on Mac OS X. I've had the spellchecker work fine in 
the past, using aspell. I've just tried to spellcheck a new file, and strange 
things are happening. Quite frequently, words that are spelt correctly are 
marked as incorrect. For example Introduction, identification, 
differentially and alternatively come up as incorrect. What's even stranger 
is that the suggested spelling is the same identical word! I click Replace 
continually, but obviously the new word is then seen as misspelt. Oddly 
enough, if I add the word to the personal dictionary, it works next time. Is 
there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Hi Pete,

please check in preferences the spell checker type you are using.
The default has changed to Macs native spell checker.

Please never disable AMS always but not AMS automatically: this would
lead to errors as soon as an AMS-requiring construct is put into the
document.

 This should be fixed as well in the next release. The trick is to load all 
 AMS packages before fontspec (which itself loads xunicode, which has to be 
 loaded after the AMS packages). See

I am glad you found the core of the problem.
(BTW: the current version of fontspec does no longer load xunicode, but
we should care for users with older versions.)

However, I also found that even if I do not check any of the AMS math
options, LyX 2 behaves as if the Load AMS math automatically option
were set:

a) the AMS symbols toolbox is enabled.
b) inserting a symbol from it inserts \usepackage{amssymb} in the preamble.
c) even writing \Rrightarrow in a math box (converts this to the symbol and)
   inserts \usepackage{amssymb} in the preamble.
   
Because of c), a work-around with disabling AMS math in the checkbox and
loading in the LaTeX preamble will fail.

The reason for this is that XeTeX now uses polyglossia, which does not know

There has been some syntax change. And if I remember well, it is difficult

George, Daron,

please note that memoir's \pagenote and \foottopagenote use in Lyx currently
suffers from two   problems:

1. a 2-paragraphs (or more) pagenote produced with Lyx 's footnote command
and \foottopagenote will fail and produce a Latex error. One paragraph notes
are okay.

2. similarly, a pagenote produced with Lyx's footnote command and
\foottopagenote cannot contain \index commands unless they are "protected"
(you need to insert a \protect command as ERT **immediately before** the
\index command).

Lars Madsen, the maintainer of memoir, is working on both issues (the first
one is trivial, apparently, the second one less so).

to remove the empty line before \end{gather*} and the document
processed all right.

I guess this is a bug...

A known bug. It has been fixed for the next release. Still, thanks

problems with lyx2lyx after moving to beta2, from svn

Hi,

I've been using the svn version for the last 6 months. Today I tried beta 2,
and it seems to be incompatible with my templates and files produced with
the svn version (!).

This is what I get:

/home/quesada/Dropbox/exist.de/exist.de.16.lyx is from an older version of
LyX and the lyx2lyx script failed to convert it.
Warning: 410: Format not supported.
Warning: Quitting.
Error: Conversion script failed

/home/quesada/.lyx/templates/defaults.lyx is from an older version of LyX
and the lyx2lyx script failed to convert it.
Error: Could not read template

What was the workaround for this? I know there's one, but cannot find it...

I'm going to guess that somehow the upgrade has failed to upgrade the 
lyx2lyx script that is being called. Unless something went very badly, 
format 410 ought to be supported by the lyx2lyx script. It is, in fact, 
the last supported format.

By chance, did you copy a specific copy of lyx2lyx in your user
folder? Try to run beta2 on a fresh ~/.lyx folder.

\AtBeginDocument{%
...
}

so that they are executed after polyglossia (and babel).

This should be fixed as well in the next release. The trick is to load all 
AMS packages before fontspec (which itself loads xunicode, which has to be 
loaded after the AMS packages). See

Yes, it should suffice to 'mv .lyx .lyx.bak' or similar. Then, if it
still fails, try removing the lyx installation completely and check
specifically that lyx2lyx gets removed, and then re-install.
Otherwise, make sure that you're actually trying to use 2.0.0 beta and
not 1.6.8. ;)

This should be fixed now with the next stable release.

BTW, the removal of the path to personal dictionary file was not my doing.
The feature was implemented for ispell and external aspell only and together
with the support for external aspell it was removed.

Yes, but the "file format" is not that mature. 
I didn't expect such "big audience" for it.

Currently it's as simple as one header line and one line per word with utf-8 
charset.

After your question I'll make it more formal and will document it in place.

I'm not sure about the concrete incarnation of that feature.
Doable is not the question - how to do it right is.
That doesn't mean I don't like it...

This would solve the problems when you exchange the document with co-workers.
But perhaps, exactly this is not wanted - I'm not sure. What do you think?

The biggest problem with this idea is the LyX file format change.
After 2.0 release it will remain fixed AFAIK - and this means the feature
will be a target for the 2.1 cycle. We want to get 2.0 out soon.

Spellchecker identifying correct words as incorrect

Hi,

I'm running the latest LyX on Mac OS X. I've had the spellchecker work fine in 
the past, using aspell. I've just tried to spellcheck a new file, and strange 
things are happening. Quite frequently, words that are spelt correctly are 
marked as incorrect. For example "Introduction", "identification", 
"differentially" and "alternatively" come up as incorrect. What's even stranger 
is that the suggested spelling is the same identical word! I click "Replace" 
continually, but obviously the "new" word is then seen as misspelt. Oddly 
enough, if I add the word to the personal dictionary, it works next time. Is 
there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Hi Pete,

please check in preferences the spell checker type you are using.
The default has changed to Macs native spell checker.

Please never disable "AMS always" but not "AMS automatically": this would
lead to errors as soon as an AMS-requiring construct is put into the
document.

I am glad you found the core of the problem.
(BTW: the current version of fontspec does no longer load xunicode, but
we should care for users with older versions.)

However, I also found that even if I do not check any of the AMS math
options, LyX 2 behaves as if the "Load AMS math automatically" option
were set:

a) the "AMS symbols" toolbox is enabled.
b) inserting a symbol from it inserts \usepackage{amssymb} in the preamble.
c) even writing \Rrightarrow in a math box (converts this to the symbol and)
   inserts \usepackage{amssymb} in the preamble.
   
Because of c), a work-around with disabling AMS math in the checkbox and
loading in the LaTeX preamble will fail.
