There has been quite a bit of discussion about this on the list. If you 
search the archives for EPUB, you'll find it. The recommended path at 
the moment is to export the LyX document to HTML, either using LyX's own 
XHTML export facility or some alternative. Then you can use some tool 
such as Calibre [1] to convert that to EPUB, or any other such format. 
Either way, you'll need to do some manual cleanup of the HTML file to 
get good results, and you'll need manually to create a table of 
contents, etc.


There was some work done on EPUB export from within LyX by a GSOC 
student last summer, but it did not make it into 2.1.0. I intend to 
incorporate it into LyX this summer, so that it will be part of LyX 2.2.0.

Recommended is to use a text editor which changes the coding to UTF8. I 
used jedit for it.

However, inserting the text in the ERT of my lilypond lyx file did not help:
The Umlaute (diacritics) e.g. ü = ue are not shown in the pdf output; 
instead the vowel is not shown at all, no space:

Hügel (Huegel) is shown as Hgel.

Another method recommended is to cut the UTF8 coded Umlaut and paste it 
in the text. That did not help either (same as above).


including \u in the tex inset of the lyx file gave:

An error occurred while running:

lilypond-book --safe --pdf --latex-program=pdflatex --lily-output-dir=ly-pdf

Sakura-LilyUTF8NN.lytex


Unfortunately in the lilypond help file of lyx I could not find any note 
on this issue.


Anybody who knows what one could do?

Wolfgang, are you sure you are using a font that in fact includes the
proper glyph for the UTF8-addressed umlaut? If the pdf simply skips it,
there are a good chances it is a font-related issue.

Trying to make ePub from LyX is the highway to heartache. Both eLyXer
and the built in LyX Xhtml exporter export HTML astoundingly unsuitable
for ePub creation. This involves not *some* manual cleanup, it involves
*horrendous* manual cleanup. LyX is not well-formed XML, so you can't
write a converter based on its XML hierarchy, but its native format is
quite difficult to parse. From what I can see, there is currently no
practical way to make ePub from LyX, except in the very simplest of
books.

What I'm doing currently is writing my books straight to Xhtml using
Bluefish, and then using my home-brew converter to make them into ePub,
from which I can Calibre convert them to anything I want. Later, I'll
make an Xhtml to LaTeX converter so I can single source those Xhtml
files to either flowing text or PDF.

This would be wonderful, because Bluefish isn't as good of an authoring

Curious: What would it take to make LyX' native format well-formed XML?
It's already difficult to parse via text, so there's not that much to
lose. If LyX were well-formed XML, one could parse out the text and
styles, and *any* kind of export would become reasonable to do. There
might be 20 competing ePub exporters if LyX native format ever became
well formed XML.

Have you tried Libertine? The font itself is not great, but it has a pretty
good coverage. You may also want to try the  the TeX Gyre fonts (TG Termes,
etc).
Which backend are you using? pdflatex or XeLaTeX/LuaTeX?

I use pdflatex. So I have to install Libertine and use XeLaTex? Never 
used it. Is it tricky to use?

Biolinum if these are installed on your system. Then you will compile

Linux Libertine should be on your system already if you use texlive. If you
are on ubuntu, it may be in some texlive-extra package. If you are on
Windows or Mac... then I don't know. You may have to ask again on the list
on how to install (if at all) Libertine on such systems. Notice however
that standard system fonts on either Windows or Mac should give you plenty
of coverage for unicode. So, you could try the step below and just choose
the  Windows- or Mac- standard fonts (I can't give you names, becaue I
don't use either syste,. I am referring to the default fonts they use).

Using XeLaTeX should be trivial. As Guenter says, you just select non-TeX
fonts in DocumentsSettingsFonts and then choose the font you want from
the dropdown menus.

Whether LilyPond will work with Xetex is another issue. I have never used
Lilypond and cannot tell you if there would be problems in that case.

for ePub creation. This involves not *some* manual cleanup, it involves
*horrendous* manual cleanup. LyX is not well-formed XML, so you can't
write a converter based on its XML hierarchy, but its native format is
quite difficult to parse. From what I can see, there is currently no
practical way to make ePub from LyX, except in the very simplest of
books.

What I'm doing currently is writing my books straight to Xhtml using
Bluefish, and then using my home-brew converter to make them into ePub,
from which I can Calibre convert them to anything I want. Later, I'll
make an Xhtml to LaTeX converter so I can single source those Xhtml
files to either flowing text or PDF.

 
 There was some work done on EPUB export from within LyX by a GSOC 
 student last summer, but it did not make it into 2.1.0. I intend to 
 incorporate it into LyX this summer, so that it will be part of LyX
 2.2.0.

This would be wonderful, because Bluefish isn't as good of an authoring
environment as LyX, and I'd say this results in a 20% decrease in my
authoring productivity.

Curious: What would it take to make LyX' native format well-formed XML?
It's already difficult to parse via text, so there's not that much to
lose. If LyX were well-formed XML, one could parse out the text and
styles, and *any* kind of export would become reasonable to do. There
might be 20 competing ePub exporters if LyX native format ever became
well formed XML.

Wolfgang, are you sure you are using a font that in fact includes the
proper glyph for the UTF8-addressed umlaut? If the pdf simply skips it,
there are a good chances it is a font-related issue.

Have you tried Libertine? The font itself is not great, but it has a pretty
good coverage. You may also want to try the  the TeX Gyre fonts (TG Termes,
etc).
Which backend are you using? pdflatex or XeLaTeX/LuaTeX?

Linux Libertine should be on your system already if you use texlive. If you
are on ubuntu, it may be in some texlive-extra package. If you are on
Windows or Mac... then I don't know. You may have to ask again on the list
on how to install (if at all) Libertine on such systems. Notice however
that standard system fonts on either Windows or Mac should give you plenty
of coverage for unicode. So, you could try the step below and just choose
the  Windows- or Mac- standard fonts (I can't give you names, becaue I
don't use either syste,. I am referring to the default fonts they use).

Using XeLaTeX should be trivial. As Guenter says, you just select non-TeX
fonts in DocumentsSettingsFonts and then choose the font you want from
the dropdown menus.

Whether LilyPond will work with Xetex is another issue. I have never used
Lilypond and cannot tell you if there would be problems in that case.

There has been quite a bit of discussion about this on the list. If you 
search the archives for EPUB, you'll find it. The recommended path at 
the moment is to export the LyX document to HTML, either using LyX's own 
XHTML export facility or some alternative. Then you can use some tool 
such as Calibre [1] to convert that to EPUB, or any other such format. 
Either way, you'll need to do some manual cleanup of the HTML file to 
get good results, and you'll need manually to create a table of 
contents, etc.

Another method recommended is to cut the UTF8 coded Umlaut and paste it 
in the text. That did not help either (same as above).


including \"u in the tex inset of the lyx file gave:

An error occurred while running:

lilypond-book --safe --pdf --latex-program=pdflatex --lily-output-dir=ly-pdf

"Sakura-LilyUTF8NN.lytex"


Unfortunately in the lilypond help file of lyx I could not find any note 
on this issue.


Anybody who knows what one could do?

Trying to make ePub from LyX is the highway to heartache. Both eLyXer
and the built in LyX Xhtml exporter export HTML astoundingly unsuitable

I use pdflatex. So I have to install Libertine and use XeLaTex? Never

Linux Libertine should be on your system already if you use texlive. If you
are on ubuntu, it may be in some texlive-extra package. If you are on
Windows or Mac... then I don't know. You may have to ask again on the list
on how to install (if at all) Libertine on such systems. Notice however
that standard system fonts on either Windows or Mac should give you plenty
of coverage for unicode. So, you could try the step below and just choose
the  Windows- or Mac- standard fonts (I can't give you names, becaue I
don't use either syste,. I am referring to the default fonts they use).

Using XeLaTeX "should" be trivial. As Guenter says, you just select non-TeX
fonts in Documents>>Settings>>Fonts and then choose the font you want from
the dropdown menus.

Whether LilyPond will work with Xetex is another issue. I have never used
Lilypond and cannot tell you if there would be problems in that case.
