Re: Newbie question: which pdf reader to use with Windows 8.1?
Thanks a lot, folks. I went for Sumatra. It works like a charm. It can even keep more than one pdf output in tabs. Only thing: when I close the Lyx file I was working on, without closing Sumatra, I get a message saying something like "Couldn't close temporary directory". Something similar comes even when I exit from Lyx. I hope it's harmless. Ashok PS: A bonus for using Sumatra. It makes viewing other ebook formats easy to read. Unlike Calibre, it doesn't insist on bringing ePub or Mobi into its library first. It reads it. What's more: it's a very good .chm reader! I'm thinking of making Sumatra the default viewer for pdf and everything; keeping Acrobat Pro only for those occasions when I want to edit or combine pdf files.
Newbie question: which pdf reader to use with Windows 8.1?
I currently have Acrobat Pro 11. It's very unwieldy. The first time I view a document, it's fine, but then it gets stuck. Even exiting Acrobat doesn't help. I have to exit Lyx and get back! Is there a simpler alternative? And how to tell Lyx not to use Acrobat pro? (I have Acrobat Pro "associated" as the default pdf viewer on my Windows system; that's how I would like to continue for non-Lyx uses.) TIA.

It worked. One problem was: The warning note said I'd need scrbook.cls and I kept looking for it. Once I got to the proper package name (koma- script), things became straightforward. Regards. Ashok PS: A further question, non-essential at this stage. While trying to access subsidiary documentation for knitr, I got a message about a module. When I tried to add the requisite module, Rnw, I was told that I'd need a package: knitr->Latex. I can't find the package.
Beginner's Problem
Hi, I just heard about LyX and, with great enthusiasm, set out to use it. I download the bundle 2.1.2 for Windows and installed it. MiKTeX also got installed. It looked like everything went well, but .. Each and every Document Class is "Unavailable. There're hundreds listed, but none that can be used. I open any of the included manuals and a window pops up saying Document Class is missing and that I should look at section 3.1.2 of User's Guide. I looked at it and it asks me to look at Customization manual! I looked at it, but it is well beyond a beginner. (An early step says "Find it at CTAN or whatever".) Also, instructions don't cover Windows 8.1, which I use (that may or may not matter, if they're the same as for Vista. It does matter that instructions are inherently difficult and not explained with sympathy for newcomers.) The manuals say that there are innumerable Latex additions, they can't all be included/supported. Granted that, I was hoping that just a few widely-used Document Classes (e.g., article, book) would come standard. Document Class may not be the end of the problem for a beginner. In addition, for some manuals, there's a second pop-up window that says that I should install some module. Should someone like me just give up and go back to Scientific Word? TIA.
PDF output
Dear friends, Thanks to the advice I got (see below), I am now able to access PDF output from LyX. Thanks a lot! Shailesh Shirali Dear Sirs, When I do "View>PDF" I get the following message: "Cannot view file. No information for viewing PDF (dvipdfm)." Go to Edit -> Preferences -> File formats, highlight "PDF (dvipdfm)", type "acrord32" in the Viewer slot (assuming you use Acrobat Reader to view PDFs), then click Modify. It would be a good idea to do the same for "PDF" and "PDF (pdflatex)" as well. Then click Save and see if you can now view PDFs. / Paul
Cannot view pdf output
Dear Sirs, I am a very recent user of LyX; I use the Windows implementation (LyX 1.3.5). I have been using LaTeX for more than a decade, and am slowly getting used to the LyX approach. I like it. While I have no difficulty in getting dvi output, I am unable to get a pdf output. When I do "View>PDF" I get the following message: "Cannot view file. No information for viewing PDF (dvipdfm)." This is so both with dvipdfm and pdflatex. Clearly, I have to reset some configuration file, but I don't know which one or how. I am not able to find any answer to this in the Wiki help pages. I would be grateful for help on this matter from some experienced LyX user. Thanks a lot. Shailesh Shirali
