Hello all, sorry, I keep on asking for help ... After finally being able to compile lyx (1.4.2) with Kubuntu (Dapper), there is one thing that sucks a little bit. If I want to run lyx in German, all umlauts in the menues are distorted. No problem, I thought, let's start lyx with: LANG=de_DE; lyx-1.4.2 Well, that does not work, since: locale -a tells me, that in fact only [EMAIL PROTECTED] does exist on my system. Well: how can I create a de_DE locale on my system? Maybe lyx has something on board for those cases? Thank you Christopher

All characters work well in all other applications, so this is not a problem with xorg- or X11 configuration. The workarounds sound well, unfortunately they are not acceptable for the usual textprocessing user who has no clue about the underlying processes of programmes and is not at all inclined to use shortcuts or ERT. As a user belonging at least partly to that group I am simply afraid to kick out my qt-version and trying to compile it myself. Good heaven, knocking down my system is the most probable thing that is going to happen and the least desirable at this moment ... The most suitable solution in my case seems to be the one with lyx for xforms - the only problem being that I have not able so far to complile the src.rpm of libforms due to allegdly missing xpm. Well, I will have another look at the install file - it is the first time I am forced to compile something so this is probably my mistake. I am sorry I cannot contribute a single line of code to this great programme the lyx developers gave to the open source community. Thank you so far for your work - it is really appreciated! Until now my girlfriend didn't give a damn about it and preferred OpenOffice, but when I showed her the first chapter printed out she nearly fainted, especially when she understood the possibilities of BibTeX. Well, I thought, this is my chance, and gave her a brief introduction into LyX (it's always better to wait until people ask you than to agitate them, but that is another topic...). Well, the presentation started off quite well but ended in an embarassing disaster. She is Spanish and I could not convince LyX to write vowels with accents, neither with Spanish nor with English or German keyboard, with and without keymaps, with and without the KDE keyboard switcher. What the hell is that? Sorry, I know it has been on the list, but I still cannot find a solution. I cannot believe that the Spanish speaking world using the qt-version is unable to use LyX. Is there an easy workaround or am I simply too stupid? Hoping that the second assumption is the wrong one - Thank you for your help Christopher

I am not at all an expert, but I had similar problems trying to convince my
machine to load german and russian. One of the problems turned out to be the
position of \usepackage[opt1,opt2xx]{babel} within the preamble. I cannot
remember if you had to load it before or after fontenc/inputenc.
Just give it a try.

I am not at all an expert, but I had similar problems trying to convince my
machine to load german and russian. One of the problems turned out to be the
position of \usepackage[opt1,opt2xx]{babel} within the preamble. I cannot
remember if you had to load it before or after fontenc/inputenc.
Just give it a try.

I recommend PDF(pdflatex). But as you don't se this entry in the menus, you should update your LaTeX distribution. Assuming that you use teTeX 2.0.2, you should update to the new teTeX 3.0, which uses pdflatex as default engine. (Don't forgt to reconfigure LyX after the update. Sounds great. I have read that they use latin modern fonts per default, that should solve part of the problem. BUT: How do I update to teTeX 3.0? I suppose it will take a while until the distributions offer rpms or debs. Uninstall tetex 2.0.2 und compile the whole thing? Sorry, I am new to the business. That is a serious question. beginner question: cyrillic
Hello, I had worked with OOo before and I am in the process of changing my office suite to LaTeX/Lyx. That means that I may bother you quite regularly now. My needs are quite basic (indeces, bibtex), since I do not need spreadsheets and formulas. In short time I am going to start to write my history dissertation and I am checking out the two programs that seem to be suitable for me, i.e Lyx, which I am enthusiastic about, and Kile, which I am less enthusiastic about. I am working my way through the lyx-documentation and have a problem now that is crucial for me. My main text, which is going to be in German, will contain quite a lot of cyrillic cites. Well, I am able to do that in Kile (with cyrillic.sty) quite easily, but I can't manage to do it in Lyx. I either put the whole document in cyrillic and write the rest in English (without German umlauts using koi-8) or, using latin-1, I cannot use cyrillic. (I cannot convince latin-5 to write in cyrillic either). Where is my mistake? Is there something which can be done about that easily? Thank you for your help Christopher

There is a bug in this Qt version: the dead keys are, well, dead. So if you tyÃpoe an accent, say, ^, it doesn't wait for the character to be typed that it will be an accent of. Very irritating. It also disables the use of ^ for superscript in math. That is really cool because that is exactly the qt-version I use. Kile is able to do it, so there must be a solution. Has anybody got it?
