footnote and minipage margin alignment

2002-10-22 Thread E GCP
Hi!

I'm using LyX 1.1.6fix4 to prepare a long document. I'm using a minipage
inside a table float to handle footnotes at the bottom of the table and not
at the bottom of the page. The problem I have is that footnotes are always
aligned with the main text, so when the tables (that have to be centered)
are not as wide as the whole page the footnotes look odd all flushed to the
left by themselves. Is there a way to control the horizontal positioning of
a footnote?

Thanks,
Enrique

footnotes and minipage

2002-10-06 Thread E GCP

Hi!

I'm trying to put a floating table in a minipage so I can have a footnote to
it just below the table instead of at the bottom of the page. But, when I
try to view the file with View-DVI I get three errors:

missing number, treated as zero.
\begin{table}[p]

undefined control sequence
\begin{table}[p]

LaTeX error:not in outer par mode
\begin{table}[p]

What am I doing wrong? Can it be done? Is there an easy way to have a
footnote to a table just below the table.

Yes, I'm using LyX 1.1.6fix4. I'm finishing my dissertation and everything
has worked out great so far, so I don't want to upgrade just now.

Thanks,
Enrique

Thanks. I found my problem and now it works. However, I have two questions.
Is there a way to eliminate the line that is created above the footnotes? It
just doesn't look good in the format that I have. Second question, I have
floating tables, but in a minipage it doesn't pay attention to the location
command (i.e., [tb]) It puts the float at the end of the chapter. Is there a
way to control the location of a floating table in a minipage?

Thanks again,

rotfloat and floats

2002-10-06 Thread E GCP

Hi!
I'm a newbie, so this question maybe dumb, but why if I use the rotfloat
package, my table for example cannot be a float in LyX? That is, it won't
work unless I delete the \begin_float tab \end_float from the LyX file.
Will the table still behave like a float?

See the attachment below.

Yes, I'm using LyX 1.1.6fix4.

I think the problem also has to do with the type of document that I'm using.
I use the thesis.cls from Voss' LyX tips site.

Hi,

How can I make the table caption (title) in a table float left justified?
LyX always centers the title with respect to the page not the width of the
table. I already tried Layout-Paragraph without success.

Thanks. That takes care of some of my problems, except that \hyphenation
does not do anything with my BibTeX entries. For example, in Jones et al.,

example: physically-based. Is there a way to fix this in LyX?

From the latex faq:
   * TeX won't hyphenate a word that's already been hyphenated. For
example, the
(caricature) English surname Smyth-Postlethwaite wouldn't hyphenate,
which
could be troublesome. This is correct English typesetting style (it
may not
be correct for other languages), but if needs must, you can replace
the
hyphen in the name with a \hyph command, defined
def\hyph{\penalty0\hskip0pt\relax}
This is not the sort of thing this FAQ would ordinarily recommend...
The
hyphenat package defines a bundle of such commands (for introducing
hyphenation points at various punctuation characters).

  * The hyphenation may simply not have been spotted; while TeX's algorithm
is
good, it's not infallible, and it does miss perfectly good
hyphenations in
some languages. When this happens, you need to give TeX explicit
 instructions on how to hyphenate.

The \hyphenation command allows you to give explicit instructions. Provided
that the word will hyphenate at all (that is, it is not prevented from
hyphenating by any of the other restrictions above), the command will
override anything the hyphenation patterns might dictate. The command takes
one or more hyphenated words as argument - \hyphenation{ana-lysis
pot-able};
note that (as here, for analysis) you can use the command to overrule TeX's
choice of hyphenation (ana-lysis is the British etymological hyphenation;
some feel the American hyphenation feels 'unfortunate'...).

Re: lyx hyperref error

2001-09-27 Thread E GCP

It seems, the problem is that hyperref redefines \contentsline, because it
needs additional information. So you have to provide the extra argument. If
I add the extra argument as shown below everything works fine with the
hyperref package.

%\addtocontents{lof}{\protect\contentsline {part}%

the following lines in the thesis.cls are the problem. if you could
comment them out, all should work. hyperref can't handle such command
structure. with these changes it worked for me and the changes are only
for the toc, lof and lot and not important.

Re: lyx & hyperref error

2001-09-27 Thread E GCP

It seems, the problem is that hyperref redefines \contentsline, because it
needs additional information. So you have to provide the extra argument. If
I add the extra argument as shown below everything works fine with the
hyperref package.

%\addtocontents{lof}{\protect\contentsline {part}%
% {\protect\figurenameToC}{\protect\relax}{Figure}%
%}

Thanks for all your help.

Thanks. But I knew that. The problem is that what is the point of a pdf file
without all the hyperlinks? Worthless if you ask me.

I would greatly appreciate if you could look at this problem more closely.
My knowledge of LaTeX is nil.

Also note that when you uncomment the \SuspendPrologue at the bottom of the
demo-pre.tex file, hyperref works fine. However, all the preliminary pages
are not printed, and I think that strangely enough then it doesn't quite
follow the thesis.cls layout.

Herbert,

Thanks. But yes that is what Weiss says in his document:

You'll still need to type in your prologue [see section [sec:prologue]] by
hand and include it into the preamble. I'd recommend putting it all in a
separate text file and using the \input{...} command to include it in the
preamble.
