Hi, I'm using CJK-LyX with Japanese on SuSE. It works fine. There are rpm for everything necessary (CJK-LyX, fonts, input ...) available for SuSE. On Mike Fabian's (maintainer of the CJK-version of SuSE) homepage there is plenty of information about every aspect of installation and configuration, which is also for other distributions very helpful. Some observations and suggestions
Hi all, I've been using lyx for about one and a half year now and I'm quite happy with it. Especially since I've changed to CJK-LyX and now am able to use Japanese and German in the same text with the cjk-latex package (although because of missing unicode support it is still not as convenient as it could be. By the way, is there still a project to include CJK-support into normal lyx?). Here some small observations, suggestions and/or questions coming from my personal every day experience: 1) I need ERT quite frequently. It would be cool to have a special box for latex code. I mean a box like the one for footnotes, which supports cut and paste and everything like normal text. Every text in this box should be automatically understood as red text, and if you close the box, your screen is clean (except of a small label). Of course that has nothing to do with functionality, it's just a way to hide ERT. 2) Find and Replace should be improved. It is very slow and it's fuctionality should be enhanced, in order to use special codes and ERT too. For example if I want to replace "z. B." by "z.\,B." (\, in red) it should be possible to do this with Find and Replace. I understand that you developer guys, who know the lyx file structure and also sed or perl very well don't need that. But for the normal user it would be a great improvement. I didn't manage to replace "z. B." with sed, because in the lyx file this expression is divided into two separate lines and I didn't find out how to use sed for such expressions. 3) Is there a way to start scripts which do changes on the lyx file from within lyx? Or is it always necessary to do it outside? I found something like that on Herberts homepage under "Czech Typographie", but I didn't understand it. 4) If I close a box with Ctr-i the cursor should be placed behind the box. 5) Version Control is a great feature. It should be improved by 2 very common tasks: to check out a special version number, and to check in with a new version number (lets say 2.1 instad of 1.44). Of course you can do that outside, but you have to be very careful not to mess up everything. That's enough for the moment. Thank you for your work and thanks in advance for any comment. If you choose Alignment = Left in the Paragraph menu you have no hyphenation in the
final document. For left aligned text with hyphenation write the following into your
preamble:
\usepackage{ragged2e}
\RaggedRight
Apart from that you can edit the layout files (first copy them to "~/.lyx/layouts") to
get rid of block alignment in lyx.

CJK-LyX and kmap
Hi, I'm still trying to get along with CJK-LyX. As I'm writing mostly in German my main problem are the umlauts, wich are not supportet by CJK-LyX (because files are saved in euc-jp coding). Direct input of latex code of the umlauts is very circumstantial so I need a better solution. My first attempt: Instead of a-umlaut (ä) I write #a as a placeholder and outside of LyX I use a script which replaces this #a in the LyX file by \latex latex "a\latex default. So when I reopen LyX I get "a in ERT. First improvement: I wrote a kmap file which substitutes a-umlaut (ä) by #a. So input is just like normal. I can push the ä key and get #a. But I still need the script. First question: How do I define output of doubleqoute in a kmod file, so that I get "a instead of #a? If I write \kmod ä "\"a" I get the LaTeX doubleqoutes and not the normal ones which I need. Second question: Is it possible to add ERT to this kmap definition so that I get directly "a in ERT when I push the ä button? I hope I was clear enough. If not I will try to explain again. 2 versions of LyX at the same time
Hi Is it possible to install two versions of LyX at the same time without any problems with configuration files and so on? I would like to install CJK-LyX parallel to the "normal" LyX, because the cjk-version has several disadvantages for non-cjk texts, e.g. it doesn't accept umlauts, compose key doesn't work if the XMODIFIERS variable is set (necessary for kinput) and overall it is quite instable (e.g. it crashes if you scroll through the users guide). If I use the one I downloaded (the version of Nov. 1999 which I mentioned in my first mailing) I get a similar error message: "Fehler beim Laden der Textklasse. Kann Textklasse nicht laden: cd-box; verwende stattdessen Standard". Obiously it doesn't fit to the new layout file which you sent me. Could you send me the current template file too? cd-box class
Hi everybody Is there anyone using the cd-box class successfully? On Herbert Voss' excellent homepage it is said to be availible on a standard lyx installation, but I didn't find it on my version 1.1.6fix3 (on SuSE 7.2). After a search on the internet I found it but only in a version of 1999. After installing it in the way it is explained in the readme file, I can open a file with cd-box template. I really admire the Slackware guys but unfortunately I'm only a rpm guy. And I think for people with limited technical knowledge it's probably easier to keep the system clean with rpms. As a "compromise" I've just rebuilt the rpms from the src.rpm files, which worked fine. But the result was the same. Then I installed the 1.1.6-fix1 version, and had the same problem. So it's clear that something in my system is broken and not the fix-2 version. I think now I will check my backup files to find out what has changed in the configuration of my system. So I try it again: I've installed LyX 1.1.6-fix2 with rpm on SuSE 7.1 (which worked well with all previous versions of LyX) and now can't mark text with the keyboard (Shift-arrow). It only works with the mouse. Also Ctrl-arrow gives no result. Just nothing happens. I've tried it with cua-binding and de_menues and tried also to replace "lyx.mo" with the fixed one that Peter Suetterlin posted here on May 9th, but still no change. Hmm, in the meantime I learned that this CJK package exists. It is said to be better for my purposes (mainly German, sometimes Japanese writing) than platex. I have also heared about Omega. But I have no idea how to get them running or how to integrate them into CJK-Lyx (I'm still a beginner in the latex-world). By the way it's not easy to get information about multilingual linux or latex. So I installed CJK-LyX on an RedHat 6.2J and really managed to get japanese support for writing and printing -- but I lost the German support. As far as I see it depends on the LANG variable. If I define LANG as "de_DE", the japanese support doesn't work. If I define it "ja_JP" the german umlauts don't work although the document is defined in lyx as language=German and encoding=Latin1. (By the way the menues appear in German!) I also tried to define a secondary keyboard as german. But no success: documents written in German don't appear correctly and I can't write umlauts. Does anybody know a way to get japanese support in LyX without losing the ability to write in german? Or do I have to use Winword in Vmware for such purposes? search and replace of format codes
As far as I know searching and replacing is only possible for text. I think sometimes it would be very helpful to be able to replace format codes too, or at least ERT. Of course I can do that outside of lyx with an editor. But this is inconvenient and moreover dangerous (if you make mistakes). What do you think about that? Maybe it's also inside of lyx too dangerous. Gerhard Schuck
list environment
I have installed lyx 1.1.5pre1 on RedHat 6.2 and have got problems with the list environment which I didn't have before (lyx 1.1.4fix1 on Caldera 2.3). If the actual width of the label is longer than the default width, the label should extend into the first line (user guide). But it doesn't. The part of the label which exceeds the default width is printed over the beginning of the following text. With other words: The text doesn't move with the label, thus they are overlapping. This appears in dvi-view and in postscript-view als well as in the actual print. Is it a bug of the new version or is something else wrong with my RedHat-installation? Short question: is it possible to use cross-references in footnotes pointing to a footnote number? Among German historians in articles it is common to use a full reference for the first citation and a short reference with a cross-reference to the footnote number of the first reference. For instance: "Wehler, Gesellschaftsgeschichte 1 (wie Anm. 3)". Is it possible to use the lyx cross-reference function for this "Anm. 3" which points to the footnote number of the first citation.? - Sorry for my bad English Gerhard
left alignment
Hello, I'm a quite new user of lyx and have still some very basic problems. For instance: How can I define left alignment as a standard for a whole text? Using the "Layout/Paragraph/Alignment Left" feature for every paragraph is inconvenient and has the side effect that hyphenation is turned off. How can I use left alignment with hyphenation?
