Vs: How to use Enhant on Lyx

2013-01-27 Thread Max Suomi
Yes, Hunspell is that bad when it comes to Finnish, in fact I'm not sure the
dictionaries for Finnish even exist for Hunspell. I probably could try to
install Ubuntu (I don't have enough space on my C drive so I'll have to find
out if I can put it on my D drive, I have
no previous experience using Linux). I hope support for Enchant will be
added on the Windows installers of Lyx - I'm not a
programmer so there is no hope that I myself could do it at the moment.

Thank you very much :-) Meanwhile I succeeded.

My path from the default Texlive Cygwin Install was
/usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/i386-cygwin

Then I made Tools->Reconfigure and rebooted Lyx.

Now I made Tools->TeX Information and checked "Show Path"
Now there was still shown the old path: /usr/share...

Now I had to press button "Rescan".
Then I really get the new path /usr/local/texlive...

(That was my Problem: I always omitted this step because
I thought intuitively that Tools->Reconfigure would do
everything)

Change between latex distributions

2011-02-08 Thread Max Funk
Hallo,

I installed the new lyx 1.6.9 and texlive 2010 in cygwin.

However, lyx uses always the old tetex-distribution.contained in cygwin.

Is there a possibility to change between distributions?

AFAIK, there must be a setting "path to latex.exe" or similar... But I
absolutely didn't find it.

Re: lyx freezes during \"HTML (MS WORD)\" export

2011-01-08 Thread Max Funk
Hallo,

I had similar problems of the export (Word HTML), with Lyx 1.6.8, as
described here.

First, I wanted to tell, that it is not bad to have both configurations:

- HTML (with elyxer) is more stable and works out of the box

- HTML, Word (with htlatex) recognises more packages (if it works.)

Apparently, Htlatex recognises more packages. For example, in my tests I
found: If I have author - year - citation

with package "natbib", then elyxer exports only numbers [1], [2],. but
htlatex exports the correct

citations (author, 2011).

So, I undertook the effort to configure htlatex. For my Windows system, I
found that the missing points of the configuration of htlatex are as
follows:

- in the converter I need htlatex $$i "html,word" "symbol/!"
"-cvalidate" (with double quotes instead of single quotes for windows)

- you must assure, that the program ImageMagick is installed and in
the system path (or in the PATH prefix of LyX). With the Lyx for Windows
AltInstaller this is done automatically.

- In the LaTeX distribution the packages containing "tex4ht" must
be installed. If MikTeX is used (not texlive), then the file htlatex.bat has
to be corrected: In the last two lines, there are wrong paths.

For a standard installation, I corrected to

tex4ht %1 -i/tex4ht/ht-fonts/%3 -ewin32/tex4ht.env

t4ht %1 %4 -e"C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\tex4ht\base\win32\tex4ht.env"

After these corrections, everything worked fine on my system. In case of
trouble, start LyX from a dos window, then the error messages can be seen.

If there is an error with "convert.exe", then ImageMagick is not properly
installed. If there is an error "tex4ht.env not found", the paths in
htlatex.bat are incorrect.

Finally two other remarks:

- To open the document from elyxer in Word: Open in Firefox, then make a
copy with "save as", document type "website complete". This copy can
directly be opened in Word.

Also, the graphics and the .css file are copied in a suitable subdirectory.

- As a very easy to use converter, I found that tth ( tex to html ) is very
good. Export your document from lyx into latex, then execute "tth -e2
document.tex".

Gives a very good html Document (similar to elyxer).

Missing files In TEMP dir

2011-01-01 Thread Max Funk
Hallo,

As LaTeX user I tested the LyX program, converting a document

It is a nice program, thank you.

I had one major problem: Some files of the document directory

(the .bib file with its original name, modified .sty files, and so on)

were not copied into the temp dir.

Therefore, I had to install the modified style file into localtexmf,

copy the .bib file after each start of lyx into the temp dir.

(I need it e.g. because of packages multibib, pdfx.)

My request: It would be great, if there would be just two checkboxes

in the document settings

x copy all files from document directory to tempdir

   x include subdirectories

Maybe a security question showing the number of files)

Then the compilation of the document would really be equivalent to

Latex.

I will simply answer myself :) Running reconfigure is not enough, I should
have read http://wiki.lyx.org/BibTeX/German this page first to learn that
I have to go to Tools -> TeX Information and search for the desired
bibliography style there. This also works for LaTeX classes and other custom
additions to the TeX tree. Now everything is fine.

LyX can’t find sprachwerker.bst

2008-11-29 Thread Max Nabble

Hi everyone,

I am trying to set up sprachwerker.bst for use in LyX, so I can use Natbib
and a German bibliography style for linguistics (other than dinat and more
Harvard-like). I installed it in

~/Library/texmf/bibtex/bst

run sudo texhash and yes, kpsewhich sprachwerker.bst tells me, that it is
exactly there. However, in LyX I cannot find it at all (although I ran
Reconfigure several times). I tried to display the bibliography via ERT,
manually choosing \bibliographystle{sprachwerker} and so on but it still
does not work. I updated both MacTeX from 2007 to 2008 and LyX from 1.5.4 to
1.6.0 (all on latest Tiger/PPC) but the problem still exists. However,
exporting to LaTeX and compiling through TeXShop works. I even restarted my
computer and reconfigured LyX several times but the style still does not
show up in LyX.

What more can I do? Thank you in advance for any help,

Max

sidecap problem and questions

I followed the help document on embedded object to place figure caption

In addition, the caption text is indented to the ":", is there a way to
turn off the indentation?

What about putting "Figure 1.1:" on a separate line?

Re: Bad PDF generated from LyX

2008-11-26 Thread Max Bian
Never mind. The problem appears to be caused by the "binary" encoding
format I selected. I selected ASCII encoding the problem has disappeared.

Btw, for anyone who includes screenshots in their documents, enabling
"Image Interpolation" in Photoshop EPS conversion will create a much
better looking PDF file. Including bitmap files directly will lead to
very fuzzy results when the PDF display resolution does not match the
native capture resolution of the screenshot.

Toolbar bug?

I am using LyX 1.6 on Windows Vista. If I have the three toolbar panels

InsetLayout CharStyle:MenuItem

If I have "InsetLayout CharStyle:MenuItem", it works. If I have
"InsetLayout CharStyle:Menu_Item" in a layout module, LyX displays it as

Style menu. Not sure why it would be red though.

Flex insets

2008-11-24 Thread Max Bian
In layout directory "stdinsets.inc", there are definitions of
Info:menu, Info:shortcut, and Info:shortcuts. It appears that these are
the ones to define the menu/shortcut styles in the help files. However,
I don't see there is anyway to use these from LyX menu. Actually, the
definitions in Logical Markup module is listed in Edit->Text Style.

I am a little confused. Shouldn't these "Info:???" styles be available
from the LyX Menu, like Algorithm, Box, ERT, etc? Or am I only supposed
to copy them and make my own in a layout or module file?

I am using lyx 1.6 on Windows.

vref – Errors keep repeating

2008-11-21 Thread Max Nabble

Dear LyX-users,

I am about to finally finish my diploma thesis using LyX 1.5.5 (on latest OS
X Tiger and MacTeX) and a highly customized setup (XeTeX, biblatex, the
SVG-inclusion and so on) with the Memoir class.

First of all, my work experience with LyX was really great so far and I
don’t think, I will ever switch back to the solutions I used before (Word,
OOWriter, Pages, Scribus and plain LaTeX).

However, all through my work progress I had these vref-Errors fading in and
out all the time. Usually, they could be fixed by deleting them and
reinserting them again; in some cases where they could not be fixed, I tried
not to bother and thought about simply writing them manually at the very
end.

But now there is this one error that I cannot solve, I cannot even find the
proper the reference that it seems to refer to (even though double-clicking
on the error seems to take me to the place in the LyX document):

Package varioref Error: \vref

Please check the pages in question. You might need to replace the \vref
or \vpageref by a normal \(page)ref to stop LaTeX running forever.

My LyX preamble can be found here:

The error appears to happen somewhere here:

Well, the first thing you have to do is figure out how to do what you
want to do in LaTeX. You'll need a command or environment that works
like this, more or less:

   \begin{graphbox}[text goes here]
%in here is the graphic you want to display, the way LyX would
format it, e.g.:

   \includegraphics{graphics/brown}
   \end{graphbox}
and the result should be the output you want.

Once you've got that, turning it into a LyX layout isn't terribly
hard. Have a look at the customization manual, if you haven't already.
But something more or less like this will work:

Style GraphicBox
   LatexType environment
   LatexName graphbox
   OptionalArgs 1
   Preamble
%here you'll include the LaTeX definitions you need
   EndPreamble
End
You can tweak this endlessly.

Yes, this can be done---anything you can do in LaTeX you can do in
LyX---though not easily, because LyX does not support multi-argument
commands or environments very well. But you could do it with a couple
optional arguments to a command defined in a layout. What's not clear
to me is how to deal with the image. Do you want just to give the
path, or do you want to use LyX's support for graphics? You can
probably do it either way,

Hi Ralt,

please specify your needs: do you want a watermark? Do you need background
pictures for a presentation you are doing with LyX? Do you simply want to
overwrite one single picture?

A quick search brings many results as it is always possible to use LaTeX
code in LyX:
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=de-de&q=latex+picture+background&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
Simply put any setup (e.g. packages to load) in LyX -> Document -> Settings
-> LaTeX Preamble and any LaTeX code in ERT (Evil Red Text) somewhere in the
document.

Max

Go to LyX -> Document -> Settings -> Language and set the encoding to utf8x
if it is not already set. That should help. Generally, I recommend always to
use utf8x (or other unicode), other encodings are older and therefore more
limited and why should you limit yourself?

Hi Rohit,

I suppose you work with Natbib (LyX -> Document Settings -> Bibliography).
For Natbib you can set the style of in-text citations (via the preamble),
which I assume you did, and set the style of the list of references by
choosing a BibTeX-Style such as unsrt.bst. You will either need to find a
style suiting your needs, or, if your needs are too special, make up your on

find via your preferred internet search engine.

Good luck ;)

Which document class? The different class often have different commands, so
that information is quite important.

Just to make sure: there is a little spelling mistake; in case you copied it
from preamble to e-mail then that could be your error message. If not, what
exactly does the error message say?

If you can get it almost right with the LyX settings for Natbib then I would
stick with it. There is a Natbib manual which is not too long and you can
find a lot about Natbib in Google Groups. I would try to add some extra
setup information for Natbib to the LaTeX preamble in LyX -> Document

As far as I can see, you will need to put something like this in the LaTeX
Preamble in the LyX document settings dialogue:

And use ERT for these commands:

And so on. However, you might experience problem with the maketitle-command,
so try putting some of the above in the Preamble as well.

I had some problems with »extra signs« in Hoefler Text that displayed
well in Inkscape as well as in LyX (using XeTeX) but for some reason
were not there any more when including the SVG in LyX. I am writing a
work on islamic political thought, so there is a lot of Arabic
transliteration I use. Many of the letters, such as in Madîna, ‘Â’ischa
and so on (I have no idea, whether they will be displayed correctly on
this list, in my mail client they do (Outlook users usually experience
problems, e.g.)) simply were not displayed correctly any more. Anyway,
when exporting the SVG in Inkscape to PDF, the fonts are automatically
embedded (as far as I remember) and inserting the PDF in LyX is
painless. My more simple graphics are still SVG directly in LyX, as it
is more comfortable to only make changes in one file.

Anyway, I think that Inkscape really is the problem here, not LyX.
By the way, just for typographic reasons, you know of the typographic
criticism of Arial, do you :)?

PNG is a bitmap-based format and not well suited for scaling. PDF or
SVG are vector-based formats and are way better for scaling, the latter
can theoretically be scaled any way you wish without loss of quality.

These three drawings are simple cartoons, created by me.

What's the best way to put an Inkcape drawn drawing into LyX?

There is a nice page on Inkscape and LyX in the wiki:

It works very well for me (though especially with fonts I have some

does recognizeshift ^ though, which correctly yields°on
my german keyboard.

- Whenever I click View -> DVI nothing happens. Am I not supposed to

The situation is the following:

- if I insert an EndFrame layout at the end of the document, I can compile
and view the document w/o any problem.

- if the EndFrame is inserted at the end of other frames and NOT at the end of
the document, I can compile the lyx file but I can not see it with acroread.
In particular latex issues an error ('"file ended while scanning use of
\lyxframe.") but lyx does not recognize it and compiles further.

- w/o any EndFrame layout lyx stops and issues an error ("Undefined control
sequence. \lyxframeend").

This is the simple lyx file (w/o any EndFrame layout)

About Beamer and Lyx

2005-06-13 Thread max
Hi everybody
I think there is something wrong with Beamer class and Lyx. I have already
found in the mailing list someone else having the same problems but I could
not find the solution. In my case I have started to prepare a presentation

was ok. Therefore I have choosed View->PDF(pdflatex) and the error issued by
latex was

 \newenvironment{centercolumns}{\begin{columns}[c]}{\end{columns}}
 \newenvironment{topcolumns}{\begin{columns}[t]}{\end{columns}}
\def\lyxframeend{} % In case there is a superfluous frame end

was missing. These commands are defined in the beamer.layout file and I
suppose they should be inserted by Lyx in the temporary Latex file.
The question is: why does Lyx sometimes export these commands and sometime it
does not? I have exported today both presentations, I suppose there are some
minor details in the skeleton presentation which issue an internal error in
Lyx.
Thanks a lot

I installed all the necessary programs. (xforma, libxpm, imagemagic, latex and lyx)

I unpacked all the .tar.gz in the folder: /progs/LyX.

I get the following error:

What went wrong?

After ./configure it says that it's all ok and I can 'make' and 'make install'.

Idealy, the scroll speed should be proportional to the distance that

Yes, both are highlighted, but no info displayed. Okay, I figured how

The error will appear when lyx.exe is being built. It requires editing
the file by hand. Bad sed script?

It is just a matter of adding "-L/path/to/lib -lXpm". You should
probably keep in mind that building package is not just
"./configure;make;make install", or "xmkmf -a; make; make install".

If that's the case, a sybmol link would be enough to solve that.

Also, fdesign is for programmers. If you just need the library, you can
skip it.

lyx file permission problem under cygwin

2003-03-11 Thread Max Bian
Hello,

It seems that if the citation reference dialog opens a bibtex file to
get the list of the keys, it keeps the bibtex file open. If I try to
edit the bibtex file at the same time using another program, I am not
able to save it. The error message is like "error 13, permission
denied".

I do not have this problem under linux, only under cygwin.

Should the way lyx handles the bibtex file be changed? Read and close
it immediately, and re-read only after a change is detected?

All chinese characters alone has meanings, thus individually correct.
There is also no space between the words like English. So it will
require some great AI in the spell-checking package to determine the
phrase boundaries and check the phrases for misused word(s). It may
also require the spell-checking software to know the Chinese grammer.

A human is probably more reliable in this case for now. :)

No, it didn't fix anything. I got the same error. The problem might be
in the xforms 1.0 library. I compiled it with gcc 3.2 and made the
shared libraries.

xforms 1.0 doesn't compile out of the box under cygwin. I had to modify
the configure files in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/Config. I guess something is
screwed up.

Anyone got a patch for xforms1.0/cygwin or a pre-compiled binary?

Pybliographer 1.0.11 now working under cygwin.

Hello LyX friends,

I finally got Pybliographer working under the Cygwin with the XFree
server. It looks and feels the same as the one you see on your linux
box. It probably runs faster, though it might be just an illusion.

Pybliographer is the best reference managing utility AFAIK. It works
great on bibtex files. Although you cannot push the citation ref into
lyx directly using this cygwin version as someone do in *nix, it is
still very useful to manage your bibtex files if you are stuck with
windows environment.

If you are interested in getting it for your cygwin box, I can provide
you with a patch file and instructions to build on your own. If anyone
can provide ftp/http space, binaries can also be provided.

Thank you and ehjoy lyxing!

I think it is better to simply have a function to add preview picture:
create a preview picture and put it aloneside the original one. User
specifies the resolution and other attributes of the preview pictures.
Only reconvert when the original has a timestamp more recent than the
preview picture.

No delay, no disk race, no memory comsumption ... Why not?

The problem seems to be a conflict between drftcite and hyperref. On my
linux machine, the versions are hyperref v6.72e and drftcite 3.7; the
windows latex gets hyperref v6.72y and drftcite 3.9.

After overwriting the drftcite 3.9 with 3.7, the stack problem is
solved. But the citation references are in trouble (got '?').

I need the drftcite package so I can see the bibtex key as the key I
wrote in the bibtex files but not numbers. If there is an alternative
solution, I'd drop the drftcite package.

As a physics guy, I am always curious about everything. Since he didn't
give any reason why not, I just tried it.

And both packages burned me, so I don't see the differences.

Re: lyx on cygwin

Thanks for the quick response.

After installing the missing sty files in the pfTex package, I tried my
lyx file. The error is still the same! "Tex Capacity Exceeded"

So, the same file works ok on linux with tetex perfectly, but won't
work with tetex or pfTex on windows.

Did I misuse any macro?

Any expert on the differences of tex on windows and latex? Could that
be a lyx problem?

lyx on cygwin

2003-01-29 Thread Max Bian
Hi guys,

I am trying to get lyx working on cygwin so that I can work on my
thesis from both linux and windows if I need to.

I first tried the tetex package distributed with cygwin. I works on
small files. If I throw my thesis on it, it just won't go. The errors
are something like "tex capacity exceeded".

I then tried "pfTex" or TexLive. That's Windows native. I have big
trouble to get it work. First of all, it is missing many basic files
like setspace.sty. Also it has a strange koma-script package that needs
scrlfile.sty and it doesn't even have it. When I run reconfig from lyx
within the cygwin shell, I saw some errors.I am not sure if it is
possible to just drop in the lyx files from a linux system to expect
work in that environment. I have all my paths the unix-way, eg.
"/usr/...".

Can anyone give me advice on which one I should fix? Should I fix the
tetex package comes with cygwin? If so, how do I fix that error: "tex
capacity exceeded". If the other one is better, anyone had
experience with that pfTex?

Thanks.

It works, but VERY slow. Maybe that's why we should avoid the cygwin

lyx for windows: Why not the cygwin tetex?

2002-12-20 Thread Max Bian
I am really interested in working in a windows environment on lyx since
most or my figures are created using Microcal Origin anyway.

Following the link at lyx.org I went to a great site about installing
lyx on windows. I saw the following:

"As of today be sure to SKIP (NOT INSTALL) the package tetex"

My question is why. I'd like to use the tetex package comes with cygwin
if possible. I am not really interested in another latex distro as the
site suggests.

Can anyone explain if it is possible to use the cygwin tetex package
instead of a native windows package?

Thanks!

Re: Convert PS to EPS

2002-11-26 Thread Max Bian
It is pretty good. I use it for many figures in my thesis (i am
writing it with lyx!). Two features I want most are:

1. Define (closed) path that contains both straight lines and beizer
curves
2. Apply clipping and filling with 1

Only programming with metapost give me those for now. I'd love to do it
with a GUI program.

Re: New More Serious Problems with 1.2.1 - Partial Printing - Bad PS Generated by LyX??

2002-11-19 Thread Max Bian
Well, if I am mistaken, GV needs the ghostscript to display anything.
So if gv works fine then you probably not passing the right parameters
to the ghostview when printing.

The similiar problem happens to me due to a bad EPS figure I included.
Try remove the recently added figures and see it that helps. Figure
out which figure that causes the problem, and do something about it.

One other thing, if you recently updated or changed configuration of
gs/gv/printer, you probably messed up something.

If still not working, post the document. There are people who can help.
