Why that? It takes not longer than 5 minutes here. I haven't said that
you should also uninstall MiKTeX. MiKTeX is the LaTeX distribution LyX
used and can be left as is. So when you update LyX no LaTeX-packages
will be installed as you already have them.

First, Thanks for your reply!

Oh, Sorry, I'm not referring to reinstall Miktex, I just mentioned the
downloading and updating the package which Lyx needed will take one
hours, if it connected to "ftp://ftp.tu-chemnitz.de";. Therefor, I
suggest the when configure stage started, at least you should let the
user choose a nearer server, or let the server as it is. You known, I
was in China mainland, connect to a server in German is really too slow.

2, default tex encoding.

This is not a bug, T1 is not wrong but the correct default setting. T1
is the font encoding and has nothing to do with the font type T1!!!
To get correct font encodings for all languages, you have to leave T1,
LyX takes care for the cases where this must be changed (for example T2
is for Cyrillic).

regards Uwe

Yes, as we have discussed before, If I create an empty lyx file, and
leave the preamble empty, the generated PDF sees really badly.

Also, I opened the "Introduction to Lyx.lyx", by default, there are many
statements in preamble part.

% DO NOT ALTER THIS PREAMBLE!!!
%
%This preamble is designed to ensure that the document prints
% out as advertised. If you mess with this preamble,
% parts of the document may not print out as expected. If you
% have problems LaTeXing this file, please contact
% the documentation team
% email: lyx-d...@lists.lyx.org

\usepackage{ifpdf} % part of the hyperref bundle
\ifpdf % if pdflatex is used

% set fonts for nicer pdf view
 \IfFileExists{lmodern.sty}{\usepackage{lmodern}}{}

\fi % end if pdflatex is used

% the pages of the TOC is numbered roman
% and a pdf-bookmark for the TOC is added
\pagenumbering{roman}
\let\myTOC\tableofcontents
\renewcommand\tableofcontents{%
  \pdfbookmark[1]{\contentsname}{}
  \myTOC
  \cleardoublepage
  \pagenumbering{arabic} }

% redefine the \LyX macro for PDF bookmarks
\def\LyX{\texorpdfstring{%
  l\kern-.1667em\lower.25em\hbox{y}\kern-.125e...@}
  {LyX}}

Here are the test:

Step 1, These code will confirm that the generated PDF has "font type 1"
embedded.

Step 2, But if I clear the preamble, then the PDF has many "font type 3"
bitmap font embedded.

Note: All the PDFs I set the encoding T1 as tex encoding.

When I change the reference tex encoding to "default", the the Step 2
above will generate the same "font type 1" PDF.

Can you give a explanation on that, seems the tex encoding can greatly
affect the output PDF property.

Thanks very much!

update issue from 1.6.2 to 1.6.3 using alternative update package

2009-06-08 Thread asm23

Hi, I use the alternative package
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.6.3/LyX-163-4-19-AltInstaller-Update.exe
to update my 1.6.2 version.

After updating, I found that in "Lyx preference -> paths", it is still

D:\Program Files\LyX 1.6.2\bin;d:\Program Files\MiKTeX
2.7\miktex\bin;D:\Program Files\LyX 1.6.2\etc\ImageMagick;D:\Program
Files\LyX 1.6.2\etc\Metafile2eps

Note, all the folders were still "LyX 1.6.2", so, the Image converter
can't work till I change these names to "lyx 1.6.3".

This is quite annoying, because, every time, after running update(AFAIK,
every update), I have the wrong path in "Lyx preference -> paths".

Is there any way that I can do to solve this:

for example, use a relative path?

or the LyX-163-4-19-AltInstaller-Update.exe can automatically change
these paths.

Thanks.

Well, I don't understand why you think that you have a problem. You want

Also, I can define these in:

Why would that be an advantage? I recommend not to change this but leave

Mine too and your LyX example file therefore still uses Computer modern.
But in your case it uses an outline font (Type 1) version of Computer
modern. I guess you have a special setting in MiKTeX, because Type 1
Computer modern is not the default.
But nevertheless, the preamble line in the LyX documentation files has

Thanks for the reply.
In fact, when I installed Lyx 1.6.2, I halt configuration process,
because it takes too many times.

First, the Miktex seems to be called from some python script, then it
try to download the need package from internet(Quite strange, the update

that not the default setting after Miktex installation).

For me, I don't have a high speed network connection, I can't wait for
more then 20 minutes updating, then I just close the CMD window, the
installation finished.

That's maybe the reason my MikTex use a Type1 computer modern font.

My question is:

Since the outline Type 1 font is better than Type 3, why Lyx till use
Type 3 by default?

I notices that in the Lyx preamble, there are some code like below:

This will give a nice font view in pdfLatex(the font looks heavy black).

If I didn't use these code, the font in the generated pdf was light and

I think it's a quirk in the IP implementation within LyX. Suppose that
you get it to display correctly. Try editing either equation (2) or
equation (3), then move the cursor out of the equation. When I do that,
the updated preview switches the number of that equation to (1). The
reason is that LyX sends LaTeX a document containing the headers and
just that one equation, gets a DVI, converts it to a PNG and displays
the PNG in the GUI. Since the document contains only the one equation,
it gets numbered (1). In contrast, when you first open the document,
LyX sends LaTeX a single document containing all three equations, so
they're numbered consecutively ... until you edit one.

/Paul

Thanks Paul. I totally agree with you. and the instant preview sometime
gives the wrong number after editing one equations. Because it is not
important issue, I turn off this functionality again.

\format "pdf4" "pdf" "PDF (xelatex)" "" "" "" "document,vector"
\converter "pdflatex" "pdf4" "xelatex $$i" "latex"

Then, reopen Lyx, you will see a menu item "view->pdf(xetex)".

thirdly:
Open the file "C:\Program Files\LyX16\Resources\ui\stdtoolbars.inc "

Find the text string: Toolbar "view/update" "View/Update", and add three
lines below this string.

Separator
Item "View PDF (xelatex)" "buffer-view pdf4"
Item "Update PDF (xelatex)" "buffer-update pdf4"

Then, reopen Lyx, you will see there are extra buttons support for

I have no problem installing in windwos xp.
I guess you are not an "administrator" in windows xp or windows 2000.
Ensure that you have the administrator privilege and install it again.

The standard installer doesn't change this setting. MiKTeX's default is

That was after adding an TeX code for another "footnoteB" (from the -
loaded - manyfoot package), because I'm using for that the "handout
(tufte)" layout because of the many sidenotes I need.

But because - at a certain point, when LaTeX (via LyX) said "too many

footnote. Which normally gives the planned result.

If the error message "The file doesn't exist ... .pdf" is a known

This is done purposely Otherwise you will be prompted about 40 times to
agree to the package installation. By omitting the prompt, you can go
drinking a coffee while the packages are installed consecutively.

So, the trick is : (If you have no network or low speed of networks)

1,kill the last step configuration of installation of Lyx.
2,Setting the MikTex update option *back* to "Ask me first".
3,start Lyx to let it initialize configuration , and When some message
box prompt to ask whether downloading missing packages. I always
choose "cancel".

4,After step 3, the Lyx can work now.

This is not working. Because then you don't have a fully working LyX
installation. You are then for example not able to compile the
documentation files like LyX's User's Guide and you cannot use all LyX
features, for example subfloats and other key features.

By the way, Even I make a full installation of "basic MikTex 2.7",
there are still several missing packages required by Lyx.

These are packages only available at special inter pages, mostly class
and style files for scientific journals.

I'm struggling with this installation problem for about 24 Hours, All
what I can do is "install" and "reinstall" of different packages again

So, you can think how depressed I feel. Anyway, I surely solved this
problem at last.

I don't understand why you cannot just wait untill all missing
LaTeX-packages are installed. I mean you don't need to sit in front of
your computer while this is done, you can also do other things in the
meantime.

HI, Uwe. I'm totally annoying of installing the Lyx 1.6.
My system is Windows xp, I have Miktex 2.7 be installed already.

I have tried
"LyX-1.6.0-1-Installer.exe"
or
"LyX-160-4-15-AltInstaller-Small.exe"
But none of them can be properly installed.

Here is my problem:
-
If I have the networks.

Every time during the last period of installing, it will connect to the
internet and downloading something Lyx seems missing.(I think the python
will do this, and download it behind the screen).

But it takes *several hours*!!! I can't wait it for too long, So, I just
disconnect my networks, then, the installation finished.

When I first start the Lyx. It will try to reconfigure and try to
connect to the internet to download something. ( In my task manager,
cmd.exe, python.exe and latex.exe was running , but No GUI was shown.)
It's also a long long time, there is no progress nor a "stop" button to
pause the precessing. So, I just disconnect the networks again. And the
Lyx screen appeared on my screen. Then, I works fine.

Later, each time I start the Lyx, it will do some annoying configuration
in console mode(before the main GUI appears), and it will cost an
endless time. So, I just disconnect the networks to let the main GUI
window comes out.

-
If I have *no* networks.

The installation can't be finished. The console window will be pending
until I click the "X" button.

Every time I start Lyx, I also see the cmd.exe, python.exe and latex.exe
and Lyx.exe are running in the task manager, But all these programs were
running behind the screen. No GUI were shown for ever...

-

I thought it was some thing wrong with the Python script, Because it
will always got the state that the configuration was not finished. So,
it will run configuration every time lyx started.

I'm hoping you other senior developers can solve this problem.
Thank you very much.

Public release of LyX version 1.6.0 (release candidate 5)
=

We are pleased to announce the fifth release candidate of LyX 1.6.0.

LyX 1.6.0 will be the culmination of 15 months of hard work since the
release of the LyX 1.5 series. We sincerely hope you will enjoy the
result.

This is the last planned release candidate. In order to guarantee a
stable release of LyX 1.6.0 there are very few changes when compared
with the last release candidate (rc4).
The changes committed refer to bug and performance fixes and there are
no known regressions compared to any of the previous release
candidates.

As usual with a major release, a lot of work that is not directly
visible has taken place. The core of LyX has seen more cleanups and
some of the new features are the direct results of this work.

The new features in LyX 1.6 are detailed in
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX16

The file RELEASE-NOTES lists some known issues with this release
compared to the current stable release (LyX 1.5.6). An updated list of
issues might later be found at http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/ReleaseNotes

In case you are wondering what LyX is, here is what
http://www.lyx.org/ has to say on the subject:

LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing
based on the structure of your documents, not their appearance. It
is released under a Free Software / Open Source license.

LyX is for people that write and want their writing to look great,
right out of the box. No more endless tinkering with formatting
details, 'finger painting' font attributes or futzing around with page
boundaries. You just write. In the background, Prof. Knuth's legendary
TeX typesetting engine makes you look good.

On screen, LyX looks like any word processor; its printed output -- or
richly cross-referenced PDF, just as readily produced -- looks like
nothing else. Gone are the days of industrially bland .docs, all
looking similarly not-quite-right, yet coming out unpredictably
different on different printer drivers. Gone are the crashes 'eating'
your dissertation the evening before going to press.

LyX is stable and fully featured. It is a multi-platform, fully
internationalized application running natively on Unix/Linux and the
  Macintosh and modern Windows platforms.

You can download LyX 1.6.0rc5 here (the .bz2 are compressed with bzip2,
which yields smaller files):

   ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/lyx-1.6.0rc5.tar.gz
   ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/lyx-1.6.0rc5.tar.bz2

Note that due to the amount of change, no patch is provided to upgrade
from version 1.5.6.

Prebuilt binaries (rpms for linux distributions, Mac OS X and Windows
installers) should soon be available at
   ftp://ftp.devel.lyx.org/pub/lyx/devel/

If you find what you think is a bug in LyX 1.6.0rc5, you may either
e-mail the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org), or
open
a bug report at http://bugzilla.lyx.org

If you're having trouble using the new version of LyX, or have a question,
first check out http://wiki.lyx.org/FAQ/. If you can't find the answer
there,
e-mail the LyX users' list (lyx-users at lists.lyx.org).

Enjoy!

testing, I reinstall Lyx 1.6RC3.In the SETUP step, I select
Chinese(simplified) as the Lyx's interface.
But this time I can't reproduce the crash again. I guess this problem
happens when I just overwrite the previous version from Lyx 1.5 to Lyx
1.6RC3. Anyway, it works in Chinese interface Now!

Thanks again.

LYX will crash when changing the Toolbar icon's size

2008-10-21 Thread asm23
Hi, I'm using Lyx 1.6RC3. I install the Lyx with Chinese language UI.
When I right click on the ToolBar, and try to select another size of
icons. Lyx will crash. It seems that not all the menu's were fully
translated from English to Chinese.

As a solving method, I reinstall Lyx with English language, the crash
never happened again.

Thanks you!
