export table TOC

[David Wolfson]

I'm writing up my PhD thesis using lyx, and am have a master document with 
each chapter as an input file. This all works ok, but I need to produce and 
outline of the overall document structure. I'd hoped to do this by exporting 
the contents pages in isolation somehow, but haven't been able to find a way 
to do this. Heres what I've tried:

- None of the export options allow a page range to be set.
- If I export to PDF/DVI I can set a page range to print, but can't then print 
to a PDF
- If I export the master document as ASCII then I only get the text from the 
mater, none of the input files. 

Does anyone have any suggestions please?

 With xdvi you can also save a page range as a PDF.

 Or with the whole document as a PDF you could (assuming availability)
 use Adobe Acrobat to extract the pages you need.

Thanks for the suggestions, they look like what I'm looking for but are you 
able to give a little more detail, or point me in the right direction for 
where to work these out though.

I'm using 'xdvik version 22.40y'  and it appears to be nothing more than a 
viewer, with no output or file options at all. I have adobe reader 7.0, which 
I guess isn't going to be able to do what you suggest acrobat can do.

I'm off to google in the meantime, but would appreciate any further guidance,

 chose Insert File - ASCII as lines, deleted the language line,
 selected all the text, and pressed Ctrl-L to convert the whole thing to
 an ERT. I then added TOC as a Chapter*.

Version Control and multipart documents

I'm writing a large document, so have a master document with a number of 
include files. This all works well, and I normally load the master document 
and load the individual files from within it.

Having completed first drafts of some parts of the document, I'm now trying to 
use version control. I've installed rcs and tried it on a test document and 
it appears to work fine. The problem comes when I try to combine the two. 

Having registered a document, if I load it from the master it is locked, but 
has no version history, and cannot be unlocked from lyx. I'm guessing this is 
something to do with where rcs logs the changes, but I can't see any relevant 
looking 'rcs' file/folder.

Have I goofed? Is this a bug? Is using RCS in this way not possible?

Any help greatly appreciated,

carried out the instructions I mentioned earlier in the thread:

Another 'texhash' and and all is well; dvis and pdfs display find, from the 
comand line and lyx.

 compiling a LyX document containing \FilledTriangleUp (meaning it
 generated the DVI file), but Metafont choked trying to generate the
 necessary fonts.  It seems to think there is a syntax error in either
 ifgeo10.mf or (more likely) ifgeo.gen, which the former includes.
er - ok. I'll have to google some of the terms here, but I get the impression 
you saying it worked - nearly.

 is the manual (in German). 
ah. I've found the file OK, now to wait for the German speaking girlfriend to 
get home ;-)

 Section 2 explains where to store the 
 pieces, after which you have to rebuild the TeX file database (see the
 URL above).

This appears to be a problem with mktexpk, as if I look at the outputs from 
xdvi (rather than running it from gui), I get:
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for ifgeo10.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
xdvi: Can't find font ifgeo10; using Type1 version of cmr10 instead.

So as I understand it LaTeX now understand ifsym ok and writes the dvi, but 
whatever tries to read the dvi (dvips?) doesn't. Does that sound right?

surprised to hear that I get another error:

*** (cannot \read from terminal in nonstop modes)

So I'm guessing that I need to install another font. I've found ifsym at CTAN:

but have no idea what to do with it!

I've been looking round the archives/google/CTAN, and have found the rather 
intimidating (103 pages) of 'the font installation guide':

and some information in the TEX FAQ:

I've just subscribed having had a trawl through the wiki (but not found the 
answer to my problem), so  a quick intro seems in order. I'm currently trying 
to write up and engineering thesis in lyx, having migrated to linux for all 
but a few apps in the last couple of years. Having not had any trainning 
pre-se, I'm into ugly scripting hacks and a big fan of mailing lists (the 
local lug in nottingham is *very* active and really helpful). 

So far I seem to have got my various chapter documents interacting sensbily 
and a have been really impressed with the look of the documents (they're just 
laking text and that's my problem!). However, the more reading round I do and 
the closer to having to sort out final layout, the more I fear I'm going to 
have to start using ERT and the like, so I might be after some hint and tips 
to get going in the next couple of months...

Anyway, the first of these problems is with inserting a date. I do the 
occasion print out and would like to include the current date when I do . I 
found some of the lyx-codes described in the wiki, and by adding 
'date-insert' and formating as lyxCode I get the current date nicely in the 
page :-) However I then get a page with nothing but 'date-insert' after it!

Have I gone about this the right way? If so, how do I get rid of the actual 
lyx-code text?

I'm using Version 1.3.5 on madrake 10.1 community...

I've just subscribed having had a trawl through the wiki (but not found the 
answer to my problem), so  a quick intro seems in order. I'm currently trying 
to write up and engineering thesis in lyx, having migrated to linux for all 
but a few apps in the last couple of years. Having not had any trainning 
pre-se, I'm into ugly scripting hacks and a big fan of mailing lists (the 
local lug in nottingham is *very* active and really helpful). 

So far I seem to have got my various chapter documents interacting sensbily 
and a have been really impressed with the look of the documents (they're just 
laking text and that's my problem!). However, the more reading round I do and

First off, I tried the 'hit the print button, not just enter' and had no 
luck. Would've been nice though...

Going into a bit more detail then.  When I hit print, the default 
printer is found ok, and its name is in the 'printer' box. However, when 
I hit the 'print' button, there's not a 'sending to print' progress bar; 
the menu just closes. To my mind this means it's not spooling (NB it's a 
network printer on another machine running CUPS, but works fine from 
other apps). 

The 'output, printer' section of the 'preferences' menu also displays 
the correct name for the default printer.  Adapt output is checked, and 
the printer command is 'dvips'.  The options look reasonable compared to 
those from the dvips man page (I'll list them below).  The only 
difference is the the spool command is 'lp' rather than 'lpr', but 
either of these options work from the command line, and neither option 
works when I change them.

One thing I have spotted is the a warning from dvips when I print from 
the command line:

$ dvips -f test.dvi -P HP2300
dvips: warning: no config file for `HP2300'
This is dvips(k) 5.86 Copyright 1999 Radical Eye Software 
(www.radicaleye.com)
' TeX output 2004.10.08:1016' - | lpr -PHP2300

I know nothing about dvips, other than that lyx wants to use it to 
control print output, so I maybe need to have a look at this if it's 
important...?

Let me know if there are any more details I can provide.  Is there a way 
to get a debug output from lyx?

I think I have solved this. I was using a rather aged version of tetex 
(1.0. something), but after some google bashing, managed to beat some 
version 2 rpms into working, and can now print. 

Can't help thinking I have some more learning to do though...
Next game is gbib, but that'll be a whole new thread!

has been recomended to me, and having used it for a couple of documents, 
I think I am convinced.  BUT  I have one real problem; I can't get it to 
print.

I'm able to print to a .ps file, which I can then print out with an 'lpr'.
I can also export a .dvi that I can print with the 'dvips' command.
I can't print straight from lyx.
The help pages in the lyx version I've got aren't the most helpful 
(along the lines of 'well printing should be ok, and anyway, this is a 
lyx help, not a printing manual!'), and as everything seems to work 
independantly I'm inclined to think lyx isn't telling dvips/lpr the 
right things...

I'm using version 1.3.2 on redhat 9.
