I would like to weigh in on this (not sure if this is the
right place). I really hope it would be possible to compile
in spite of bibtex errors. I have hundreds of
LyX files, and none of them compile any more.
Let's say I collaborate with a colleague (who uses
LaTeX). The colleague gives me a BiBTeX
file. I use a few references from there. But
the file has problems with other entries.
Now I have to go in and correct my colleagues
numerous (non-important) errors just
to get these few reference. 

One idea of LyX is that it's a front-end
to LaTeX. But now suddenly, things that
compile fine in LaTeX (many BibTeX errors
are non-essential) no longer works in
LyX. That makes it difficult to
collaborate with people who use LaTeX
(I certainly try to sell LyX to my colleagues,
but many are too used to pure LaTeX).

To elaborate a little further. So, to
compile my file I have to correct my
colleagues bibtex errors. But when
he then sends me an updated bibtex
file, I have to make the corrections all
over again. Of course I could send him
back his corrected bibtex file, but
that has its own set of issues, and
might not be popular.

As long as all collaborators use
LyX (2.1) it's not a problem. They will
get the bibtex errors, and will have
to correct them. But if some collaborators
use LaTeX, this can cause problems.
The issue with bibtex somewhat
breaks the compatibility between
LaTeX and LyX.

Sorry, another example. I'm trying to make 2.1.0 work,
and correcting in BiBTeX, so I continually encounter issues. 
Say you have two bibtex
files X.bib and Y.bib. Some documents
use X.bib, some use Y.bib. Now you make
a new document that uses both X.bib and Y.bib,
but they have some entries repeated. It will
not compile. You
could delete those entries from X.bib
or Y.bib, but then files that rely on
only X.bib or Y.bib will no longer compile.

I feel there needs to be at least a
preference to disable checking bibtex errors,
although this has been rejected in previous
emails. This is really needed to collaborate
with people who use only LaTeX.

0411; Б; \CYRB; CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER BE
...
044E; ю; \cyryu; CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER YU
044F; я; \cyrya; CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER YA

This also allows as wider choice of fonts as there are more T2A-encoded font
families available.

However, if the cyrillic text snippets look fine, there is no need to change
anything in your document at this stage.

Language Default (no inputenc) is an advanced setting. It requires you
either to use pure ASCII or to insert some input converter by hand (e.g.
in the document preamble). Use this only if absolutely required.

However, it may be that you did not change the radiobutton, so that while
the drop-down box shows this text the setting is Language default.

 As soon as I put it on UTF-8 the complete Bibliography chapter will
 disappear at the end of the document after compiling.

Strange. There should be some error report. Maybe this is related to BibTeX
not working with utf8 and will go away if you have your bibfile in pure
ASCII with LICR.

What happens with setting encoding to ASCII?

 Does Cyrillic work, if you drag-and-drop it into the document (just as
 a test)?

 Yes, although in another font than the rest of the text.

For fixing the font issue, you may try the substituefont package
(http://www.ctan.org/pkg/substitutefont has an example file in the
documentation) or (if this is possible for your document) using a font
supporting Cyrillic like Linux Libertine or Deja Vu.

 Alternatively, you may try to write the Cyrillic characters as LICR
 macros (\cyra ... \cyrja) - this should solve utf-8 problems but you
 still need correct fonts and the correct language setting (so switch
 the TeX font encoding).

It seems like you need either to switch to biblatex (I don't know whether
this works with LyX) or

* LICR macros and
* \foreignlanguage{russian}{cyrillic text} around all cyrillic text
  parts in the *.bib file.
  
For conversion of UTF8 encoded characters into LICR, there may be an option
in the BibTeX program (encoding ASCII or similar).
You can also try the recode command line program or LyX:

If you apply the following patch to a copy of unicodesymbols in your
local LyX folder, LyX will do the conversion. Copy/Paste the Cyrillic
text into LyX, set LanguageEncoding to ASCII and see the result with
ViewSource or in an exported LaTeX file.

Language Default (no inputenc) is an advanced setting. It requires you

However, it may be that you did not change the radiobutton, so that while
the drop-down box shows this text the setting is Language default.

 As soon as I put it on UTF-8 the complete Bibliography chapter will
 disappear at the end of the document after compiling.

Strange. There should be some error report. Maybe this is related to BibTeX
not working with utf8 and will go away if you have your bibfile in pure
ASCII with LICR.

What happens with setting encoding to ASCII?

 Does Cyrillic work, if you drag-and-drop it into the document (just as
 a test)?

 Yes, although in another font than the rest of the text.

For fixing the font issue, you may try the substituefont package
(http://www.ctan.org/pkg/substitutefont has an example file in the
documentation) or (if this is possible for your document) using a font
supporting Cyrillic like Linux Libertine or Deja Vu.

For conversion of UTF8 encoded characters into LICR, there may be an option
in the BibTeX program (encoding ASCII or similar).
You can also try the recode command line program or LyX:

If you apply the following patch to a copy of unicodesymbols in your
local LyX folder, LyX will do the conversion. Copy/Paste the Cyrillic
text into LyX, set LanguageEncoding to ASCII and see the result with
ViewSource or in an exported LaTeX file.

I already scanned some digests with hints about Greek and special
characters, but since I am not very well known in different text
encodings, I could not make up what to do. Anyone with a quick fix? I
will stay using JabRef, since this is the only of 100 titles that give
me problems and am happy with that program.

to bibtex8?

You do so in DocumentPreferencesBibliography and then select bibtex8 in
the drop down menu on the right pane, where it says Processor

This is just a guess, as I never used bibtex8 (I switched to biber/biblatex
when having similar problems with Greek):

There may be a problem in using bibtex8 with UTF8 encoded files (like your
bib file). Bibtex8 expands bibtex to 8 bits, but I am not sure it's Unicode
capable.
I am sure Guenter knows more about this, perhaps he'll chime in.

No, it's not. There's a new, unicode-capable variant called bibtexu,
which is even included in TeX Live, but it's not documented and it also

No, it's not. There's a new, unicode-capable variant called bibtexu,
which is even included in TeX Live, but it's not documented and it also

Roel,

In addtion to everything you tried, have you set the bibliography processor
to bibtex8?

You do so in Document>Preferences>Bibliography and then select bibtex8 in
the drop down menu on the right pane, where it says "Processor"

when having similar problems with Greek):

One of my articles was translated in Russian, and now I would like to refer to
it in my PhD thesis.
If I want to 'pdflatex' my thesis, the bibliography pages, however, stay empty,
where the settings worked fine before and until I entered this Cyrrilic signs.

I am using Lyx 2.0.6 under Windows 7 with MiKTeX, and am a LyX user for a few
years, and now JabRef 2.9 as reference manager, that stores my references in a
flat text BibTeX file. The entry looks fine in the text file:

author = {Schipper, H.R.},
title = {Производство Бетонных Элементов С Двумя Криволинейными Контурами
- Применение Передовых Производственных Методов В Создании Свободных

The original bibtex does not understand non-ASCII charcters.
There is an 8-bit clean fork (bibtex8).

If you use literal German umlauts in your *.bib file without problems, this
is a sign that bibtex8 is used.

What is the encoding of the bibtex file?

Do you use utf-8 for the exported LaTeX file?
(Document>Settings>Language>Encoding)

Does Cyrillic work, if you drag-and-drop it into the document (just as a
test)?

Does it work if you set the language of the relevant text part to Russian?

With 

* an utf-8 encoded LaTeX file,
* the russian option to babel (or as document wide option)
* \foreignlanguage{russian}{} around all cyrillic text parts
* bitex8
* a suitable Cyrillic font
* some luck

it might work.

Alternatively, you may try to write the Cyrillic characters as LICR macros
(\cyra ... \cyrja) - this should solve utf-8 problems but you still need
correct fonts and the correct language setting (so switch the TeX font
encoding).

key ? Also, sometimes accented or extended (8-bit) characters cause the bib
parser from LyX to stop parsing past the broken entry. Thus it would only

sorted alphabetically by BiBTeX key and NOT in the order that they appear in
the bib file. It may be difficult to find exactly which entry is problematic
if that is the case. I do know that some of my bib files had a similar issue
because I had typed names or other fields in french with accents that were
OK under the Windows encoding I was using, but above the 7-bit standard
ASCII supported by BiBTeX.

My name is Greg and I have been a Lyx user for some time now.  I am running
Ubuntu 8.04 and LyX version 1.5.3.  I am trying to get started using BibTex
in Lyx, but I am running into some problems.  The citations only come up as
[?] in my documents when I generate pdf's from Lyx.  So far, here is what I
have done: I have set the BIBINPUTS and BSTINPUTS environment variables to
the folder where I keep my bib files.  I created a Bibtex file and inserted
it into Lyx with Insert--List/TOC--BibTex Bibliography.  A gray box
appears in my document that says BibTeX Generated Bibliography, and when I
go to put in citations, the keys that I have in my bibtex file appear, and I
can put in citations that are in the .bib file. However, when I click the
generate pdf button, the citations only come up as [?] in the document.   I
suspect that my problem may be that my TEXINPUTS variable is not set.  I am

 There were a few problems specific to Ubuntu Linux, but
 those appear to have
 been sorted out.
 
 Additionally Mendeley makes it very easy to organize and
 sync your reference
 library to multiple machines.  Zotero can do something
 similar, but I've
 found Mendeley easier to use.

Hi Rob,

Progress report. I reinstalled Mandeley and it seems to be working well. I also 
installed a Foxfire sql manager extension which may or may not have cured the 
Qt4 SQlite plugin problem. The only reference I could find about it was on 
Kubuntu not Windows.

However, how do I get it to sync with Zotero properly?  It seems to have nicely 
imported all the collection names that I have in Zotero but none of the 
references!  

On the other hand I just had it import all the pdf's of journal articles I had 
stored in a folder and it performed wonderfully. :)  It's now on my watched 
folder list.  Wonderful!

At the moment if I can get the Mandeley-Zotero sync to work properly the two 
look to be extremely complimentary products.
