Thanks to all your responses.

Sorry I didn't mention this, I am using Windows XP.

It seems to me that I should stick to the 1.5.5 and not move up until we get
the final OK to do so.
I don't want to mess things up.

I was surprised from James' mail. How is it possible to have a 1.6 and a
future 1.5.7 side by side?

Thanks again, Erez

They are separate binaries with separate folders for application

What is the best way to upgrade to LyX 1.6?

2008-09-02 Thread Erez Yerushalmi
Hi all,

I am using LyX 1.5.5 and would like to upgrade to 1.6.

What is the best way to do this?
Should I *un*install 1.5.5 and then install 1.6, or just upload the new,
install it, and it will erase the old?
Or, finally, should I wait a bit longer for another 1.6 version to come,
which is better then the LyX 1.6.0rc2.

Thanks,

Erez

I am running them side-by-side until 1.6 is ready for prime time. I
would be very careful about jumping into 1.6 with any critical work,
since it is still a bit unstable.

If you are brave, and really excited about trying out the new 1.6
features I suggest trying it out in small steps.

Also be warned that files are not (yet) backward-compatible - meaning
anything you edit in 1.6 will not function in 1.5 until 1.57 is
released, which will provide backward-compatibility.

That's for Linux!

What platform are you on, Erez?

On Mac, the installer creates a separate user-directory for 1.6, keeping
the 1.5 user directory untouched (and the right one is used
automatically). Just give the 1.6-application a different name (e.g.
LyX16.app), and the two versions happily co-exist.

At least with Uwe's installer (and I suspect this is also true for

directory for 1.5.x in user\Application Data\lyx15, and will put the
