TeX-Math on eps can also be done with psfrag (look for it at CTAN) also
the replacement text can be defined in the latex/lyx file. :-)

psfrag depends on postscript, i.e. no go with pdflatex :-(

it works with latex->dvips->ps2pdf, though :-)

Under

  http://tech-www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/applets/javafig/

you will also find a java-applet that can produced fig-files and a
precompiled version of fig2dev. You in case you don't want to use the
cygwin-port.

xfig runs fine under Windows, using cygwin (the same environment you need
to run LyX under Windows). It is a standard part of the X11 cygwin
environment (should be in /usr/X11R6/bin).

.hope this helps...dac

I looked into doing what you have done (using pstricks), but decied
against it when I discovered that it was incompatible with pdflatex. It
seemed to rely on some rather *ugly* hacks, and therefore I steered
clear of it. However, getting good mathematics in figures continues to
be a problem. I solve the problem by doing my diagrams in Mathematica,
which can do math layout, but this is far from satisfactory (no gui to
draw with - must write things like Line[{{0,0},{0,1}}] ), and is no
solution to those who do not have Mathematica.

I know that xfig can do what you want, but I don't think it runs on
Windows. I used to do math to some degree of success with Corel draw,
using superscripts etc, but it's probably not the best solution. The
ideal is to use TeX to layout the maths (since it's so good at that!),
as you are trying to do... so perhaps the pstricks hack must be made
portable to different output devices!

Thanks Ben... the reason I can't do a save as EPS from dia is cos I modify
the tex output from dia.. After exporting from dia to tex format, I change
some of the letters to include math subscripts etc. which as far as I know
can't be done in dia 0.90 in windows. For example, I may change a t to
$t_1$ in the tex output from dia rather than place a 1 in text format
beneath the t in the dia diagram itself.

Is there a graphics program which allows for easy inclusion of text,
graphics and math stuff like symbols and subscripts etc.?

You can't use pstricks with pdf. If you created it in dia,
then you should save it as .eps. Then run epstopdf on it to get a .pdf, or you can
use tex2pdf on your document, which will do the epstopdf automagically.

tex2pdf can be found at
http://tex2pdf.berlois.de/

My thesis uses lots of dia pictures, but no pstricks, and it works great with pdf.

I've heard of a similar 'pdftricks' package, but never used that.

Thanks Andre and Herbert.. I looked at the link above and tried out
pdftricks but couldn't get it to work.. so I resorted to ps2pdf.

problem with pstricks and PDF

2002-08-13 Thread Nirmal Govind

Hi,

I have a figure that I created in dia and exported to Pstricks tex format.
I then input the file in LyX. The postscript output is fine but when I
export to PDF using any of the three methods, the figure is missing. How do
I get the figure in the PDF file without using ps2pdf on the ps file directly?

Thanks,
nirmal
