I think it was discussed on the list recently that Virtual-T does the
conversion automagically for you.  On the Model 100 itself there's a
method to load documents to convert to Basic, but that method temporarily
eludes me.

This has already been written, in the user manual. ;)

If you have a BASIC file that you can read as text, then regardless what
filename it has now, rename it to FOO.DO , where "FOO" is anything 6
characters or shorter.

Copy the file to the M100.

Enter BASIC

LOAD "FOO.DO"
SAVE "FOO"
KILL "FOO.DO"

You now have a FOO.BA on the M100

These days youtube is a great way to share the hobby. If you do something
tricky or interesting you could try your hand at that.

We always need more documentation. As I say from time to time, those that

Hello,

This is how I connect a Raspberry Pi to my M100, the little board even looks
the same. You can get 5v from the Pi GPIO bus, and the tx, rx, and gnd.

It seems to do OK with the M100 almost RS-232 levels. It doesn't handshake
though, but I just run at slower speeds if I'm using the builtin term.

The primary communication has been through TTL serial between the two.

Recently, I reluctantly switched to USB connection, for speed, which
freed up the serial pins on the Pi and on the FONA.

I came across this article, "Add a 9-pin serial port to your Raspberry
Pi in 10 Minutes"
http://www.davidhunt.ie/add-a-9-pin-serial-port-to-your-raspberry-pi-in-10-minutes/

And It occurred to me that I could use one to connect my Pi, or a ZeroW,
even, to my M100.
Now I'm wondering if I can use it to connect the FONA directly to the
M100, forgetting the Pi.
It should be doable, since the needed pins are on the FONA.

I think it would be cool to be able to log onto my Pi from my M100 (and
I can think of several uses people might have for this setup), but even
cooler to use the FONA.

The FONA also has... uhm... I2C, I think it is, connectors. So other
sensors could be connected to it via those connectors, and the M100
could be used as a remote data collection device. I think.

Anyway, I picked up a couple RS232-TTL converters, with DB9s and using a
Max3232 chip off of ebay for about $12 for both. You can get them a LOT
cheaper (under $3.00 US for one), but these gave me the confidence that
they wouldn't fail on me.

I'll post here any experiences I have once I play with it some. Just
thought I'd share on something that was new to me.

[M100] Converting text document to BASIC file

2020-01-22 Thread Jim Williams
Okay, as I mentioned in the email I just posted, I've been fafiated*,
and just dug out Virtual-T.

I came across an old basic program listing (not my own) I'd like to try
installing on my M100. It's 8K, so it should fit, but it's in text
format, meant for another system The original code dates to 1978.

I want to screw around with it to see if I can remember my old BASIC
programming knowledge from... omg.. almost 40 years ago, now.

But I can't recall offhand how to convert a text document to a Model T
BASIC program. I suppose I could dig the owners manual out of the
closet, or just type it in by hand (did I mention it's 8K?) but then
asking here might spark an interesting discussion. And of course I'll be
sure to share my experience here.

(first learned BASIC on the school's only TRS-80 Model I with Level 2
BASIC; then on a VIC-20 of my own)

(*FAFIATED = Forced Away From It All).

Re: [M100] Converting document to BASIC file

2020-01-22 Thread Jim Williams
Doh... I renamed the game file extension from .bas to .ba, loaded it
into Virtual-T... and it appears to run without errors!

Which is great, but leaves me without a project.

Not really; I need to reformat it for the 40 column screen, add in an
option to exit mid-game, things like that.

Oh... the game's name?

The Oregon Trail.

My plan now, after fitting it to the 40 column screen (any way I could
get it to work with View80?), is to "morph" it into "The Organ Trail", a
modern version set in a post-apocalyptic world. Maybe even add some
ascii graphics.

[M100] Current version of Virtual T? Rex2?

2020-01-22 Thread Jim Williams
I just realized that, after a hard drive crash awhile back, I have
LaddieAlpha on my desktop, but not Virtual-T.

So I corrected this by creating a shortcut, but I noticed the datestamp
on the Virtual-T executable is 2013.

Upon running it, I discover it's version 1.5. Is this the current
version? Or should I download a newer one to replace it?

Further... it has an option I don't remember (doesn't mean it wasn't
there...) for a "REX2" ROM.

Which reminded me that there was proposed a newer version of REX that
would have basically a large ramdisk in addition to the multiple banks.
Did that ever come about? (yes, I've been fafiated for awhile, I hope to
correct that this year).
