I entered a program from an actual PCM magazine, and it averaged between 1.5
and 2 seconds per full line.

It depends on a number of things:

* consistency with barcode wand holding angle and swiping speed.
* contrast and clearness of barcode printing.
* flatness of the magazine pages. If you have to fight the magazine to
lay flat, it will take longer.

It also helps to use some sort of "straight edge" to guide the barcode wand in
a straight line.

But... back to the topic at hand: bar codes. Does anyone have a barcode
wand and the time to test it out on PCM's Bar Code Listings
<https://archive.org/details/PCM-Magazine/1984-04_v1n10/mode/2up>? How many
seconds does it take to enter a long program and how many bytes is the
program? I expect it will not be fast, but since it would only be needed
once in a while ? like if the Model 100 navigating the ship has been reset
and loses all programs in memory ? slow but dependable may be a reasonable
compromise.

B9, Team,

I have a barcode wand and a few accessories as well from my purchases and

scanner and get a fair estimate of how much time it needs to enter data.

I want to thank you all for the support and insights. You've given me a lot of

Birt,

would it be a big deal to render this to somewhat lower fidelity? Or split into
multiple files? I'm trying to send it to my kindle scribe through Amazon's
service.

It's 80Mb... gmail's largest attachment size is 25mb. Supposedly I could send
it as a zipped attachment but that only brings it down to 60mb.

There's a dedicated Send To Kindle windows app but its max is 50mb. And It
won't accept a zipped file.

So one 50mb file would work. Or multiple parts < 25mb each would work

If it is a big deal, no problem, I will look for a way to split it up or resize
it myself.

While I have not done a statistical study with a significant sample set, it
kicks out dice rolls that are very random, and the folks that I play with feel

The source code is available and I’d be happy to highlight the key bits (some

Subject: [M100] Model T VGA Display, or VT100 Terminal

I came across a video today of the TTL VGA32 dev board, which is a pretty
interesting toy.

Diving down the rabbit hole, I came across another video about the same
board... using it as a VGA *terminal*, demonstrated with an IMSAI 8080.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOhmlOyUw4w_channel=AmateurTinkering

It should also allow you to connect a PS/2 mouse, and better audio than the
native Model T. Of course it would take some custom programming to take
advantage of the extra capabilities, but I don't think anything beyond what
people can program for it now.

It's been awhile since I've read up on the barcode mod for the M100, so forgive
me if this is Old News or I have my facts wrong, but this looks like a great
solution for RexCPM with a console display on a VGA monitor. VGA to HDMI
converters aren't that expensive, either. You could even, I think, rig a USB
powerbank for portable power, and connect a 5 or 7 inch VGA/HDMI display, to
retain somewhat portability (in that event you might want to 3D print an
adapter to "clamp" it onto your Model T when using it).

I continued diving, and came across *this* video of someone using the same chip
series to make a VGA card...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muuhgrige5Q_channel=bitluni

It seems to me theoretically possible to connect this VGA adapter to the
modified barcode port and give the Model-T, with some custom programming,
actual VGA output. I'm even trying to think of a way I could use this to give
my Amiga custom RTG video output.

While on his Tindie site looking at this board (the link in the description of
the video is wrong; here's a link to his Tindie page:
https://www.tindie.com/stores/bitluni/ ), I came across his other projects,
including the Pico VGA, a tiny VGA adapter for esp32 development board...
which, again, seems to me could work with the barcode adapter to give the Model
100 VGA output.

If you use the "PICO-VGA" with his "TinyPICO" esp32 module, talking to it via
the M100, you should even be able to have 3D acceleration, based on what I've
read. But even just connecting the $15 Pico-VGA to the Model T should give you
some vga output capabilities.

I could be wrong in all of this or in some particulars, but I thought I'd share
the links so that the experts here could possibly make something of it, or at
least explain why I'm completely off-base with this idea.

Hey all!

I was wondering if people would be willing to share how they typically use
their Model Ts.

I've found that it's pretty difficult for me to find a comfortable position
to use my Model 100 for any length of time. I'm always bending forward to
get a better view when I sit at a table or desk, and when it's on my lap the
lack of palmrest causes the keyboard to slide too close to my body making it
hard to type.

Do you typically only use them on desks? Do you use yours on your lap?
Do you use a lap desk? Any tips for how you comfortably use a Model T for
longer stretches (30+ minutes) would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes Ken — A majority of the world still uses windows. What would make you think

The vast majority of the planet runs on Unix-like platforms. Windows is pretty
much only popular on desktops, which are a tiny fraction of the computers
people own or use on a daily basis in the modern world.

John was kind enough to create CloudT (see http://bitchin100.com/CloudT ) for
the convenience of people who don't want to compile and install VirtualT for
their platform, or who wish to access an emulated system quickly and easily.

I'm happy to report that Text Sweeper 2.7.3 seems to run like a dream on it!

Hi,

As somebody that is trying to document a lot of lost, and new configurations
for the Altair 8800 and IMSAI 8080 computers … it’s a lot of work. I have
some help from others in the S100 Google group to provide software and
documentation , but still, it’s a lot of work making it easy for beginners.

As a TRS-80 Model 100 owner I have to add my 2Cents which is,

I suggest you make a series of video shorts. Pick one thing, one subject,
like What to Buy and How to install the hardware. Then the next video is
“Setting up and Using the Software” for that.

Talk slow … take your time so people can easily scroll the play-bar back ‘n
forth to find parts in the video they need to review once or twice as they
switch to their computer to implement what is happening in the video.

Too many demo videos go too fast and worse, include too many different
things to do.

Good luck!

Amazing work, Steve! I've been thinking about doing an M100 mod extravaganza
video, so this is one mod that I definitely want to do for that project.
I'll likely be checking it out over Christmas break in a few weeks.

Hah, all of my own boards get to about v 12 before I'm mostly happy, and
then continue polishing for several more. It's almost like software, never
really done.

Hi everyone,

I've been working towards finishing off my project for increasing the speed
of the Model T laptops. The idea is to create a (relatively) easy to make
and install solution that allows the user to switch the clock rate from 2.5
MHz to 5 MHz.
This is really nice on the 40x8 LCD machines.

The universal software command to switch clock rate is
OUT 85,1 for 2x mode and
OUT 85,0 for 1x mode.

Of course the Model T is not designed for this, but in my experience so far,
it seems reliable. I really like the upgrade and plan to install in all my
laptops. Being able to operate in nominal clock mode is of course very
useful because you may find some software to be incompatible.

Models I have upgraded to date:
* M100 (NA, early variant, not UK)
* T102
* T200
* NEC PC-8201/8201a
* Olivetti M10

I am publishing all the information needed to DIY this upgrade. I don't have
any plans to make these upgrades. Consider this upgrade only if you are
comfortable with soldering surface mount parts, and with making minor
modifications to your laptop.

Upgrades that are done and in the process of documentation are M100, T200,
NEC. Upgrades that need a new PCB design still are T102 and M10. All
information will be at this site:

<https://bitchin100.com/wiki/index.php?title=5MHZ_upgrade_for_Model_T>

I am publishing
* PCB designs for the clock doubler board (there are a few variants)
* schematic
* bill of materials for parts you need
* documentation for building the clock doubler
* installation documentation per laptop

Things I have discovered while developing this;
1. Power consumption goes up by about 20% when you run at 2x clock.
2. Depending on the speed of your SRAM, you may need to implement a
modification to speed that up. Each model has a specific mod you need.
3. In M100 with the custom socket pinout, in most cases you need to upgrade
your Main ROM to something faster. This usually involves an adapter board
and an EPROM.
4. In the Tandy 200, one must slow down the mach

The M100 User Guide PDF on the Club 100 site looks pretty bad, but I can’t find
one that looks any better. Is there a higher quality version out there that I’m
missing?
