2018-10-03 Thread Jesus R
I have started the process for converting the "Programming" software to WAY
format. I'm picking these genres at random so if there are any request
please let me know.

Also, I have been sent some software which I could add to the list.
However, I'm having a touch time since they are scattered in folders and
might not have back up docs. I'm hard pressed to convert these and organize
them. Some of the files are in MP3 format which I don't care for:) Some
have multiply recordings on one track which I'm not sure what to do with
and don't always know what's on them. I can start by figuring out a way to
list it all and maybe people can have a look and comment on them. Any
recommendations on this would be greatly appreciated.

For what it’s worth I just tried one at random (alien.ba) and it
worked perfectly from my iPad to my T102. I didn’t have the volume up

fine on round 2.

I have an android phone I acquired just to run mcomm on, but haven’t

works for this sometime soon. Perhaps it is dependent on the player in
some way.

The m100 can receive files via the cassette port from almost any audio
source. The trick is to use a an audio transformer. Something like an
8 ohm to 1.2k ohm. The 8 ohm end connects to the output of the audio
device. The 1.2k ohm end connects to the ear end of the m100 cassette
cable. I have done many experiments with this over the years.

Yeah it's definitely a coding task.

Well if I find some time I could add a audio file export feature to CloudT.

CloudT already supports accessing http files and Google Drive, so I have
code for getting files into CloudT.

Making perfectly tuned, compact audio files is possible.

Actually, since it could generate the audio file or stream it, maybe we
wouldn't even need to store the audio files. Just play it straight from
CloudT into the Model 100, since CloudT runs on iPhones and Android phones.

But I wouldn't hold my breath.

My goals are simple...have access to the files on the go via my computer or
phone. The files are archived in lossless WAV and anyone that wants to
convert them to lossy MP3 is welcome to. I'm not going to apply additional
filtering and in my use case I'm not worried about the files size.

Link to WAV archive: www.sonore.us/m100

Jesus R

I played a bit with Audacity, and I have a couple of comments, wrt settings.

1) 8 bit vs 16 bit. If like me you are interested in the actual files,
and size matters, then consider saving the file in 8bit format. this saves
1/2 the data.
2) filtering. Applying a low pass filter at ~18 kHz as a post processor
to the captured waveform reduces peaking. This matters a bit - the
software limits the peak to peak voltage to +/- 1V. Peaking reduces the
average peak value that can be obtained.

Re: [M100] program library in WAV format

2018-10-02 Thread Stephen Adolph
thanks - I translate this mostly as - use an audio transformer to boost the
audio level. said another way - need more swing.

When I look at the M100 Rx code, what it is doing is detecting zero
crossings. so edge rate matters, and crossing position accuracy.

IIRC T200 had slightly different code, more robust zero crossing detector -
should check that.

Regarding fast sampling - when I compare the actual M100 output waveform to
the computer generated output waveform, I can't tell a difference in "rise
time" (in quotes because the output is digital not analog). maybe the time
sampling quantization affects the crossing position in time - if that were
true then fast sampling would indeed be valuable.

I really dislike the idea of a custom non-passive cable, but maybe that is
necessary.

1.
a mini-disc recorder that used a VERY specific type of ATRAC recording
algorithm (prior models worked just fine) and
2.
super cheap micro cassette recorders. Some of them didn't have adequate signal

The cable worked with cassette recorders, olympus i400 mico cassette, digital

(like the Iriver T30), and audio ports on a computer, etc. If you make a

I would suggest a rate of 196k. Lower rates will work, but 196k is a sweet spot.
The audio coming from an m100 is line level. Some recorders only take mic
level. You will need a a line level to mic level passive attenuation circuit.

As for the original post in this thread A TON of m100 programs could be

Re: [M100] program library in WAV format

2018-10-01 Thread Peter Noeth
I have made .WAV recordings of my programs before, for the purpose of
"double backup" when traveling with my M100 on commercial airline flights.
I carried my CTR-81 and the programs I needed on tape as well as being
loaded in memory. This was in the days when the airline security x-ray
machines were a lot more powerful, and you could elect to not have a
computer x-rayed if you showed them that it powered on and started booting.
The x-ray machines would often corrupt a laptop computer hard disk after a
couple of times through the machine, and was also not very friendly to
Static RAM either.

What I discovered in making the .WAV files was that the recording should be
made at 0dbm because as has already been pointed out, the portable
players have a limited audio output level. The other key point for reliable
CLOADS from the player, was to maximize the treble and minimize the bass on
the player itself. This is because the harmonic content of the "digital"
signal gets attenuated and appears to alter the pulse edge timing due to
frequency rolloff of the highs, and added confusion in the computer signal
conditioning filter from too much bass.

Regards,

Peter

Yeah it's definitely a coding task.

Well if I find some time I could add a audio file export feature to CloudT.

CloudT already supports accessing http files and Google Drive, so I have
code for getting files into CloudT.

Making perfectly tuned, compact audio files is possible.

Actually, since it could generate the audio file or stream it, maybe we
wouldn't even need to store the audio files. Just play it straight from
CloudT into the Model 100, since CloudT runs on iPhones and Android phones.

But I wouldn't hold my breath.

2018-10-01 Thread Stephen Adolph
I played a bit with Audacity, and I have a couple of comments, wrt settings.

1) 8 bit vs 16 bit. If like me you are interested in the actual files,
and size matters, then consider saving the file in 8bit format. this saves
1/2 the data.
2) filtering. Applying a low pass filter at ~18 kHz as a post processor
to the captured waveform reduces peaking. This matters a bit - the
software limits the peak to peak voltage to +/- 1V. Peaking reduces the
average peak value that can be obtained.

Awesome. I think the 2 big differences from what I was doing (1)
amplifying the output to maximum of almost 2Vpp and (2) using .WAV.

my little 128MB MP3 player has a new life as a bootstrap / portable read

A-DUEL is ~5kB of data but the .WAV is ~3MB.I guess convenience has a

What I'm thinking is, the Model 100 cassette file format is documented, I
think in the service manual.

So you could go straight from a .DO, .CO or tokenized .BA to a WAV file
(or FLACC or even MP3) with the right code.

Seems like a weekend project. Just not mine, my weekends seem to keep
getting booked with work.

Re: [M100] program library in WAV format

2018-09-30 Thread Brian White
That would be the ideal archival & reference format, cas files paired with
open source (ie future-proof, lost-proof, taken-away-proof,
platform-support-proof) reference code encode and decode.

Then, for users to conveniently play a sound file right from a browser into
a m100, a web site that would have served up wav files could just about as
easily have a small cgi that plays the cas file out as wav or fkac or mp3
or ogg etc whatever.

Using cas files as the source also lets you hack on the contents on the
fly. Is there a game with known bug or kniwn hack? The player cgi could
offer to apply this or that hack on the fly as it's played.

Recording from real tapes to cas lets you do meaningful diffs between
versions of the same program too. So you might be able to end up with
sonething like a set of patches for a given program, like different printer
support, different machine types (nec vs 200 vs 100)

I have some apps where they have a tape with the nain prog up front, then
several overlays later in the tape. You load the main app, then you load
one of the overlays on top to give the main app support for a printer or
plotter. We should think about ways to handle that too. They could be yet
more cas diffs, or just more individual cas or wav files like they are on
the original tapes.

[M100] program library in WAV format

2018-09-30 Thread Jesus R
It's working fine here:) If you use the recoding as is it will be to low to
be useful. This is why I increase the amplitude in software by +25db. This
produces playback of about -6db and free of clipping and the unit finds and
loads data effortlessly without the use of an inline amplifier. Phones,
computers, and iPods all work here with volume set to 100%.

_

I must say I am surprised that i have not heard people getting unrepeatable
results using .WAV audacity files.

Where I left this off myself, in my own efforts, is that the typical 1Vpp
signal swing generated by most modern earbud type audio devices (phones,
mp3 players etc) is not sufficient to drive the M100 input reliably.

It works sometimes and not others.

M100 is meant to have 4Vpp drive IIRC.

I basically gave up on this, since I didnt want to have a post-amplifier...

[M100] program library in WAV format

2018-09-30 Thread Jesus R
Your welcome and I'm glad it's working out. The system is dialed in now and
I'm happy to share the setup.

There are several tasks and I'll explain each below:
1. Download the files and rename them on my computer - I'm not really sure
this step is needed, but it doesn't take up much time since I'm using a
naming changer application to bulk change .ba to .do in the file name.

2. Load the files a few at a time into my T100 and play them back into my
capture device - In order to transmit data back to the unit I'm using a USB
to serial cable and null modem cable. Because of limited space you can only
load so many programs at a time. Teeny has been helpful here because it's a
small and effective application and works with the drive emulator Laddiecon
running on my PC from DOS. After loading a batch use these command in
series on the unit: load"filename, csave"filename.ba, kill"filename.do,
new.

3. Post capture processing - For capturing I'm using my sons gaming
headphone USB to Logitech microphone/headphone adapter which support 44.1
captures and playback. I'm using Audacity set to record and play from the
Logitech device, Windows Direct Sound, sample rate of 44.1, playback volume
100%, record volume 100%, and record in mono. These are all selected from
the main screen of Audacity. First you press Record and then you
enter csave"filename.ba on the unit and when its done I stop the recoding
right away. This produced a recoding that is way to low for direct usage at
around -31db. I now move the cursor over the recording and press Control
and Alt together to select the entire recording. Then I go to Effect and
select Amplitude and add 25db to the recording and press Enter. This volume
gain allows you to play back the track at 100% volume on your source and
have the level be just right for the unit to accept it.

4. Prepare the Google Excel sheet and upload the files to my website and
they are ready for use.

Let me know any questions you might still have.

You can transfer files to your m100 using a serial terminal program, a usb
to serial adapter, and a null modem cable.

Once the file is on your m100 you can save it to floppy if you like.

If you have a floppy driver or rom loaded already you can use that to load

[M100] program library in WAV format

2018-09-16 Thread Jesus R
Agree and done.

Thanks

---

Jesus,

  Correction to your Usage Instructions:

Change: 2. From BASIC on your unit type: cload"cas:filename.ba"
and press Enter.

To: 2. From BASIC on your unit type: cload"filename" and press
Enter.

The CLOAD command only works with the CAS: (cassette) device, so
specifying it will cause a SN (syntax) error. Also the .BA extension
is not necessary, and is not normally specified. The CSAVE and CLOAD
commands only work with the "tokenized" BASIC programs (as saved in
the machine's internal file space), so the .BA extension is assumed,
and will not appear in the file name header in the .WAV file (or on
cassette).

I have used this method myself, but prefer using the original
cassette tapes, and exercising the CCR-81a. :-)

Regards,

Peter

I'm far from done and its a bit of work. If you have them done
already...can you provide them so can post them?

Too bad I didn't see this earlier. I converted a huge chunk of these (if
not all of them) a couple of years ago.

You are correctthis passes files direct from computer or phone to your
Tandy unit via their audio output.

You shouldn't have to transfer to tape.

Should be able to play from your computer or phone through headphone jack.

When I used CAPS ie: http://www.sonore.us/golfgon/CRIBGE.wav it downloaded
fine.

My process was to use Audacity with certain settings.

That said I've always been pretty happy with serial transfer since audio
transfer is fiddly.

Re: [M100] program library in WAV format

2018-08-27 Thread you got me
it's a good idea to have m100 programs in several formats: non tokenized (.DO)
tokenized (.BA) and the files in an audio format. Although audio can be
painful for some people, it is still the easiest way to transfer a program
without spending too much.

Some updates:

I have been testing the save and load function via a Logitech USB to earphone
and microphone interface. This interface came with a gaming headset. I'm using
Audacity to capture and play the file for loading and saving them on my T100.

As a proof of concept I have some files you can try posted on a temp Google
spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1m7QRN1I5KpJJO_RKYnwFhmrluDjbYm6bEe_rIgz80ug/edit#gid=0

Setup:
1. Connect the T100's cassette cable to the headphone and microphone jack of
the USB interface. Some computers have these built in.
2. Make sure the volume for the headphone output is 100% and bit perfect.
3. From Basic enter this command which helps with saving the files - sound off.
4. From Basic enter this command which will clear any pre-existing programs -
new.
5. From the TRS-80 Model 100 manual follow the instruction on page 191 for
Loading a Basic Program from Tape. Here is a link to the manual:
http://www.classiccmp.org/dunfield/kyocera/manual.pdf
Example of filename (caps matter and it must match) - TPL.BA<http://TPL.BA>,
ZOIDS.BA<http://ZOIDS.BA>
6. From Basic enter this command which will confirm you received the code - LIST
7. Finally, don't forget to save the file to your T100.

Let me know any questions or comments.

This is how many people have done software libraries for the TRS-80

ONLY way for a Pocket Computer to save/load stuff to an external

But that's the first time I've ever heard the term "quickly load" in

Sounds like a cool idea!

It might be possible to bulk-convert them using Virtual-T. You can enable
the remote control option and then write a script to use that command line
to load and save a bunch of programs. I'd suggest looking into that.
