Moving a Character at a time

2011-08-17 Thread David Griffith
This is the first mail I have sent to the Mac list using my Mac so progress
is slowly being made. . However I can navigate characters by using shift plus
right and left cursor arrow. This appears to highlight each character I am
moving. Is there a way of moving a character at a time without selecting then
text in VoiceOver? I need to practise this so a referral to tutorial or part
of the Voiceover help would be good. Not immediately found though. At the
moment I have to edit words by using the delete to delete backwards through
whole words rather the edit them.

Regards
David Griffith

Ntpdc is the command to query ntpd. Ntp.conf has the configurations. There are

Hello everybody

Could one of the terminal gurus out there please remind me how to:
1. quiz a NTP server for its response.
2. manually force the client machine to do an update using a specified ntp
service.

Thank you.

New time capsule impressions and questions

2011-08-17 Thread Eric Caron
Hi list,

My old router was fading quickly, it needed a restart once a day or so,
to provide a connection. I had been looking for a external storage drive so I
went all out and purchased the new Time Capsule with 2 TB storage. It arrived
yesterday and after setting it up I received a pleasant surprise.

I had been looking into ways to speed up my Mac book recently. It felt
sluggish lately. Well once I connected to the new router I get the biggest
surprise the speed of my mac on the internet was so much faster! Even without
the ether net cable the speed felt almost like I had instant access to pages.
I would interact with a link and just be there.
I wanted to share this because if other folks are finding the internet
and on line experiences slow it may not be your computer. I thought things
might improve a little, but this is really a dramatic improvement.

The Time Capsule also has 2 TB of storage. I'm hoping someone can explain to
me how to access this storage and how it can be best used. I found it under
network but was hoping to find a way to just keep it on my desk top.

Can someone explain how the time capsule storage is used and if it can
be partitioned like a hard drive?
Any tips on how I can use this storage and how it works differently then a
simple external drive would be greatly appreciated.
warmly,

Eric Caron

prizmo on the i-phone

2011-08-17 Thread michael weaver
what is the order of options to choose when scanning text in
prizmo on the i-phone?
i went to text, asked a sighted person to test it by taking a
picture of some text only the text didn't appear for it to be
read out for some reason so there must be an option i may be
missing unless my sighted befrender didn't double tap to actually
capture the text.
is there a podcast about prizmo which isn't from the perspective
of a sighted user which might help?
i found a prizmo demonstration podcast for the i-phone only the
lady i think talking through the demonstration of prizmo only
said what the scanned text was like on screen which was no good
from a blindness perspective.

Shopping Apps For Iphone/Ipad

2011-08-17 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi Everyone!

So you do your grocery shopping every week and you want to be absolutely
organized? Then here's the best app I've seen to help you "organize" your
shopping and its free!

Note that the Woolworths app is only available in Australia as far as I know.

This app does everything you'd expect a shoppers helper to do and far more.
Firstly, it can locate your nearest store and thus will display the local
stores product catalogue and appropriate weekly specials if any, you can then
browse all of these and add what you want to your shopping list where you can
edit, manipulate by increasing or decreasing the amount of an item or items
required, email your list to someone or an address in your contacts list etc.

The app is fully accessible with Voiceover with plenty of help screens and tips
available should you find yourself lost in the software.

The app tells in where to find items, for example if you add a kilo of apples
to your shopping list of a particular type, the Woolworths app will tell you in
what row to look and this is displayed in your shopping list so you can send
someone down to the supermarket and they'll know exactly where to find an item.

Have some products in your pan tree you wish to order again but can't remember
what the label says so you've no idea what to search for? No problem, the
Woolworths app has an in-built bar code scanner, take the product from the pan
tree, scan the bar code and the app will identify the product where upon you
can add it to your shopping list.

I see wonderful potential for this app and full marks to the developers for
what they've achieved with the app thus far, pity you can't order a delivery
but perhaps that will come in the future.

In short 2 words sum up my feelings regarding the Woolworths App, "Most
Impressive".

Is the Lion XCode IOS simulator accessible?

2011-08-17 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings,

In xCode for Lion, I built the MoveMe project described In the Apple tutorial
entitled: Creating an iPhone Application

I'm still trying to wrap my head around objective C, hence am probably missing
a number of details, but when I run MoveMe, it appears to build successfully
and launch in the IOS simulator. According to the documentation, a welcome
button draws an NSString (presumably text) object using a custom instance
method called: drawRect.

My expectation was that in the simulator window there would be a button visible
to voiceOver showing the word: "welcome". Instead there is no content visible
to voiceOver whether I use the two finger flick reading commands or the one
finger flick left/right on the trackpad.

I am wondering whether vo can be used in Lion in the xCode iPhone simulator.
If so, perhaps the draw method failed to implement an accessibility feature (II
still lack the knowledge to determine that).

Has anyone else played with the IOS simulator? TIA for any thoughts or ideas.
Geoff

More alternatives For Email Addresses From Mac Access Dot Net

2011-08-17 Thread Gordon & Lynne Smith
Hello everybody

As long-time list members will know, but perhaps newer ones don't, we at Mac
Access Dot Net are happy to offer free email addresses on our secure servers to
those who would like them. As well as being able to offer addresses in the
mac-access.net, mac-access.co.uk, mac-access.org and mac-access.org.uk domains,
we can now also offer:
maciosaccess.com
maciosaccess.co.uk
maciosaccess.org
maciosaccess.org.uk

These new domains form part of plans we are working on as a part of our
upcoming network expansion. We are also rolling out more Email servers on our
new network trunk which will come on stream any time between 22 and 25 August.

If anybody is interested in any of these or would like an account at any of the
domains on our server with the exception of those which we host for clients,
feel free to contact us off list at the usual support address and we will be
happy to discuss your needs with you.

Lynne

Hello David

That's why this list is here. Feel free to keep asking questions. The beginning
of wisdom is "I do not know". We all had to wise up some time. And I'm sure we
all started out with "I do not know".

Please do recommend this group to your friends if they have a Mac interest or
an iOS interest.

Gordon is going to approach Apple to see if we can get this group listed on the
resources pages which Apple maintains. The other list is there so why not this
one as well? If anybody else feels disposed to back us up in this, we will be
grateful.

Re: VMWare on the Mac

2011-08-17 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Sean

Sharp Keys is a Windows utility that allows you to modify the keyboard layout.
But it's off topic for this group as it is Windows.

Just to remind the group of list policy on this issue. The configuration of the
VM itself is on topic. But the configuration of anything inside of the VM is
definitely off topic for this group. That includes your screen-reader or
anything else.

Re: Navigation text questions

2011-08-17 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi all,
There is an option in VoiceOver Utility to force it to behave like the Windows
screen readers and speak the item to the right of the cursor each time. That
is on the Text pane of Verbosity settings, and defaults to "Speak Text the
Cursor Passes." I recommend getting used to the way the Mac does things on its
own though, not trying to make it act like Windows.
Best,
Zack.

Re: Navigation text questions

2011-08-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Sean,

To understand text navigation on the Mac, you need to picture a line being
drawn between two characters. This is the insertion point. The insertion point
moves from left to right of a character as you press the right arrow, and from
right to left as you press the left arrow. When the insertion point is to the
right of a character, the backspace will delete that character.

To me, this is perfectly logical, but I've never used Windows.

Cheers,

Anne

Navigation text questions

2011-08-17 Thread Sean Murphy
Hi All.

This is a basic question. But it is doing my head in.

When you move by character or word. the cursor is always at the end of the word
when moving from left to right. If you move right to left then the insert
cursor is at the beginning. This is the reverse to what I am used too.

Why is this the case?

So how do you delete the character you are currently on?

How do you stop the same character being spoken twice when you move to the
previous character and then back again? EG: Say you are on a space. Then you
press the left arrow key. YOu hear a character. Then you press the right arrow
key you hear the same character. This type of double announcing isn't seen
under windows.

If there is a good tutorial on this. Point me to it.

Hi All.

Those of you who play in the shell for Mac. How do you turn on auto completion.

This is normally turned on by default for all other Linux/UNix base OS's that I
have used in the past. I would like to know why Apple in their wisdom have
disabled it. I couldn't find the answer on Apples support.

Press control + option + A (VO+A) to read all from your current location.

Re: VMWare on the Mac

2011-08-17 Thread Sean Murphy
HI,

thanks Gordon and Cliff.

I do have some more questions.

1.
what is this file and where do you get it?

2. So I need to modify the preferences keyboard shortcut and re-assign keys?

I will play with the later and see what occurs.

Read all / say all in voiceover

2011-08-17 Thread David Griffith
Dear list

I have several books in text format which I need to read.
They have been scanned from hard copy and typically will be 300 500 pages in
length.
Typically these are broken up into chapters which take up about 30 pages
each.

I started to read one of these today in Text Edit on the Mac. However the
biggest level of reading I can find is read paragraph which as you might
imagine is an extremely laborious way of working through these books.
I am looking for the voiceover equivalent of the say All command which will
allow me to listen to the book until I need to make notes in it or edit it
to correct scanning errors.

Sorry for these basic questions as this is one of the most basic commands in
a screen reader but I cannot find it so far using keyboard help and
documentation.

Regards

David Griffith.

Hello Geoff,

At the second hotspot, you need to do a Shift-click. Yes, it still works in
Lion, and no, I haven't found another way of doing this.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Extracting part of a web page?

2011-08-17 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Geoff

This method seems very complex. Why can't you just select the text by
interacting with it and then pressing VO+Enter? I am sure that works, almost.

1. Define hotspots for the beginning and end of the text I wanted to copy.
2. Turned trackpad commander off.
3. Moved to hotspot1.
4. Rout the mouse via vo-shift-f5 and verified with vo-f5.
5. Click the trackpad (to clarify, I did not use the VO mouse click command).
6. Rout to the hotspot which was set at the end of my desired selection.
7. repeat steps 4 and 5 above.
8. Press command-c.

If I'm not overlooking a step, this use to result in the desired text being
copied to the clipboard. Instead a beep is emitted and nothing is copied.

So I am wondering how to accomplish this task? Dear I hope that there is a

Mac Access Dot Net Expansion Plans

2011-08-17 Thread Gordon & Lynne Smith
Hello everybody

On 25 August 2011 Mac Access will be adding another network trunk to our system
meaning that we wil have 3 separate Internet backbones. There are a number of
reasons why we've opted to invest in this way, but I won't go into all of those
here because it would turn into a bit of an essay.

The reason I'm mentioning it now is this. You may remember that some time ago
we talked about establishing a cloud backup service for a fee. We eventually
opted not to go that route because it would have been a little difficult for us
to keep on top of which users were due what, when and why. Also the process of
taking payments would have been a little messy.

However, we have decided to offer a free backup solution to a number of clients
and customers. Yes, you heard me right, a "free" backup solution.

If you are interested to know more, please contact the support address and we
will tell you how it will work. The last time we tried this we got some pretty
skeptical messages. One of which virtually accused us of trying to collect and
steal people's personal data. That is not the case, and we encourage you to
use encryption if you wish to join our service. But that's your call. More
information upon request, off list.

Lynne
