wireless N protocol on the iPhone 4s?

2011-10-20 Thread william lomas
hi all, does the iPhone 4s I wonder, support the N wireless protocol?
Or only a, b and g?
My router at home supports the 5 ghz profile which I think is only reserved for
the N standard of wireless, my iPhone 4 can't find the network I am on now with
this 5 ghz profile selected, so assumed didn't work.

IBank is supposed to be good I believe, as I think it can also use your
existing bank if it is on their list or you can import your data in to it from
the bank website so statements each month for example I believe could show up.
The app is also available for iPhone/ipod etc

Re: apps, ICloud and multiple IOS devices

2011-10-20 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Mary,
I don't know if iCloud will be a problem for you. All you need to do is turn
off the items you don't want synced. As far as I'm aware, iCloud won't touch
your apps on any device, unless you have the automatic download option checked
in the Store settings, in which case new purchases will be streamed to your
devices as they become available.
I don't think iCloud will interfere as much as you seem to.
Best,
Zack.

Don't worry. iTunes backs up your phone before the update and restores
it afterwards.

Hi Zach,

I thought one of the things you could do with ICloud was synch things other
than calendars and the like. I actually just set up an me.com address on my
IPad, but I don't have any intention of activating it on my IPod. So I want
ICloud to deal with Mail on the Pad but not the Pod. Or take Navigon, which I
want on the Pad and not the Pod. On the other hand, I have quite a bit more
music on my IPod than on the IPad and want to keep it that way, so I have
different play lists synched up through ITunes for each device. I don't see a
problem with contacts or calendars. Documents could be different, since I tend
to use the IPad for that purpose. So maybe ICloud is a bad idea for me. It
seems convenient, but it seems Apple assumes everybody wants to propagate
everything across all their IOS devices.

I want to listen to an internet radio station (WBBM)
News Radio 78 Chicago. I will do most of my listening, however,
from a Linux system that runs lynx which does not support
javascript so I will try to get it on the Mac I have at work

In Linux, the mplayer utility can handle just about
anything you can throw at it as long as it is in the form of a
URL. Sometimes, you can piece it together when javascript is
involved, but this time, I've come up short each time.

Javascript is the greatest cure for which there was
never any known disease but everybody now has caught the cure.

apps, ICloud and multiple IOS devices

2011-10-20 Thread Mary Otten
I have an IPad and an IPod touch, and I don't have the same apps on each. This
is possible when you synch to your Mac via ITunes by going into the apps
listings and selecting those apps that you want on each device. Kind of time
consuming if you've built up a lot of apps, but worth it. The same is true for
my music collection and my devices. I would like to be able to use ICloud to
synch my devices. But since ICloud is connected to an apple id, not each device
separately, it seems that it is not possible to selectively synch different
items to each individual ios device. Does anybody have a solution for this?
What am I overlooking?

Thanks for that.

Doesn't look as though its a title I'll be buying which is unfortunate as the

I couldn't get past the main screen, I can see the Iphone there but can't

Re: is it worth upgrading to growl 1.3?

2011-10-20 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Lyn

Let me try and explain what happens here. Yes, I put a new version on our
machine a few days back actually. Visually the notifications from some
programmes are better. But I have to say I've not noticed anything new that
affects VoiceOver

But maybe the old version is not fully Lion-compatible so yes, if that is the
dase then update.

Re: is it worth upgrading to growl 1.3?

2011-10-20 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hello Lyn,

The probably most significant change of all is how Growl handles settings at
this point. Previously, it used to be located in System Preferences as its own
preference pane but since the Mac App Store Guidelines do not permit this, to
os mow om the status bar. Third-party status bar icons are not accessible to
Voiceover at this time, though under OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard, you could reach
these accessibly by using the mouse. Currently, as far as I know, Apple is
investigating a fix to at least make this possible under Lion though I wish
they'd honestly investigate a fix so we could actually properly navigate these
icons using VoiceOver as intended. As far as I've been told, this is not under
investigation, but accessing the icons with the mouse is. This means that you
potentially only get one chance to access the Growl settings, and that is as
soon as you run the program after downloading it from the App Store. I haven't
found a way to access this within the Growl.app file itsel
f, and I don't think you are able. There are definitely some changes, some
good and some bad, but you can find those on the website. If you don't need to
fiddle with Growl 1.3 preferences, you can set it up once and leave them alone.
However, keep in mind that not all applications are able to register themselves
with Growl as of yet. Some will even without requiring an update, but others
will not.

Regards,
Nicolai

https://josephhall.org/nqb2/index.php/stuckonmute
What appears to happen sometimes when the headphone jack is pulled out too
quickly is that the sensor seems to stick on a setting for digital optical out
(directing output for a high-fidelity output). This is a mode that the
headphone jack can also support, according to the Apple Specs on External ports
for Geoff's model MacBook Pro.

When that happens, the Sound Preferences pane appears to get locked up, with
sound directed to digital out, and the mute box checked. I don't know whether
the solution posted on this older blog will work as an alternative to inserting
the headphone jack half way and pulling out several times in succession (with
one report of someone having to do it at least 50 times to get it to reset).
The blog post I linked outlines a way to reset by bringing the preferences pane
up (after being quit) while the headphones are plugged back in, playing a
sound, setting the preferences pane output device to "Headphones" and then
pulling out the headphone plug from the jack at this setting. The claim is
that the sound preferences will be reset to "Internal Speakers", but I can't
test this.

I'm just posting the link to it for Geoff to peruse, in case this happens again.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Heytell is an iPhone app that is way too cool and feature rich. I use it for
communication with friends an family from all over the world. Look for it on
the iTunes app store. I learned of it last year when I first got my iPhone and
it is just awesome and the devs are good to work with.

Re: Resolved: Muted MBP speaker.

2011-10-20 Thread Esther
Hi Geoff,

Glad this was fixed, but does this mean that the sound was muted on the because
mute was checked on the Sound pane Output tab under System Preferences? How
weird!

Create another account that you can use to login. It doesn't have to have
admin privileges, but you should be able to get in if your account runs into
problems. I'm glad that it sounds as though there's no hardware flaw on the
machine.

I was just reading up on what you can do from the Lion Recovery partition.
Apparently, you can attach other hard drives and recover files for the main
Macintosh HD from there. Here's the article by Erica Sadun with some details:

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/07/21/lion-diving-into-your-recovery-partition/

For future reference, to force eject a DVD or CD, you can hold down the eject
button at the top right corner of the keyboard upon bootup. Here are the
instructions from MacRumours:

"If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer
holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears,
let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button."

Cheers,

Esther

Geoff -- If you're not able to get the desired results using Esther's great
instructions, here's an idea that falls somewhere in-between fixing it yourself
and having sighted assistance. Since you now have an iPhone 4S, this means you
also have the ability to make Facetime video calls. Perhaps you could initiate
such a call with a sighted person who has a facetime compatible Mac or iDevice,
aim your iPhone's facetime camera at the screen of your Mac, and let the person
on the other end give you visual feedback as you work your way through to
system prefs to select the correct output device. I think this also might be
possible using the latest version of Skype for iPhone, but I'm not positive of

Since I don't have another account with admin authority or a bootable Lion
backup Esther's well thought out instructions won't help. Better planning next
time!! So I was just about to ask if anyone here might be willing or able to
do a facetime call when I saw your post.

I have a DVD and was considering reinstalling Lion. Trouble is that a DVD is
already in that drive. Is there a way to cause it to eject? I thought I
recalled reading that command-e on boot-up would do the trick, but alas that
did not work. I already tried reinstalling via the net, but it appeared to
hang when attempting to connect to the app store.

Thanks again to all for your input.
  Geoff

instructions, here's an idea that falls somewhere in-between fixing it yourself
and having sighted assistance.
I think this also might be
possible using the latest version of Skype for iPhone, but I'm not positive of
that.

Re: syncing books to read 2 go

2011-10-20 Thread Esther
Hi Michael,

You'll have to get help from some of the users who have tested out other DAISY
reader apps on the iPhone, but the way I think this is supposed to work is that
you create a zipped file of the Daisy book, connect your iPhone, and transfer
the files. But you must use the file format required by the app, or the
contents won't show up or be transferred, and I believe that requires the file
folder for the books you want to transfer to be zip compressed.

My guess is that it works like, this, but I haven't tried this:

1. Connect your iPHone to your computer and wait for it to finish syncing.

2. focus on its name in the iTunes source list.

3. Choose the Apps radio button.

4. In the Apps section, you'll find a file-sharing table. Select Read2Go in
this table.

5. The next table shows the files that are currently in Read2Go.

6. Next comes an Open button. to add material, press this.

7. A standard Open dialog box will open. Use it to choose a file to add. It
must be a zipped DAISY book,

8. Press Enter, and the file will be added.

Can someone who has transferred DAISY files to a DAISY reader app help Michael
out here? My guess is that his method of selecting files directly from his CD
won't work, unless he selected a zipped folder.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Muted MBP speaker.

2011-10-20 Thread Esther
Hi Geoff,

Do you have a test account set up on your MBP that you can log into? You
stated "I get sound output through the headphone jack only but as soon as I log
on it stops. Resetting the pran restored my start-up sound, but the problem
persists." Resetting the PRAM as Bryan suggested fixes system wide sound
problems. Since you lose sound upon logging into your account, I'd suspect
that one of your preference files may be corrupted. One way to check that out
is by logging into another user account on your machine and checking to see
whether the same problem occurs there. If it doesn't, then you know that it's
likely to be due to something individual to your account's setup -- most likely
a corrupted preference file. I create a user account on my Mac just to use for
testing whether problems or changes in behavior arise due to my local account
settings or whether these are due to system-wide behavior.

Do you only have the recovery partition, or do you also have a bootable clone
of your setup under Lion? If you have a clone that you made with Carbon Copy
Cloner or SuperDuper! after you upgraded to Lion, you can attach that drive and
boot up a working system from your clone. Just hold down the option key when
you power up. What will happen is that you'll be presented with a choice of
boot volumes to use for startup, with your regular hard drive selected by
default. VoiceOver won't be speaking at this point until you actually boot,
but if you press your right arrow key followed by the return key, you'll switch
to the next bootable volume and start up from there once you press return. If
you only have one other bootable disk attached it doesn't matter whether you
press the left or right option key to switch to the clone, however, some people
buy one large disk, partition it, and put all their clone backups onto a single
drive.Apart from the possibility of a single poi
nt failure, you'd have to keep track of the number of times you press the
right or left arrow key to determine which partition you were selecting before
pressing return, and you'd only be able to identify the partition you got by
checking the contents after boot up. So in that case you would have to keep
notes, only press either the right or left arrow key, and count the number of
key presses that would get you to a particular bootable partition.

I would try to check whether the sound problem exists by booting into another
account on your machine. If you don't have another account created, but you
have a working bootable clone of your system taken at an earlier time, I would
attach that drive and boot up from there by holding down the Option key when
powering on, then pressing Right arrow and the return key after waiting for 15
seconds or so for the drives to be recognized. Once your clone drive is booted
up, you can log in and check things out. You can also access your main
Macintosh hard drive and its files. My guess is that you want to copy over a
file named "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" from your user account on the
clone to replace the file that you changed when you were experimenting, but you
can also copy this over from the Library/Preferences folder of another user
account where this is working. Maybe you can get this from the recovery
partition? Or you can try moving this from the default location i
n the Library/Preferences folder of your account, and check whether the
default settings (to use your internal speakers) are restored when the
preference file is recreated. Someone who has access to the Lion setup can
probably tell you more.

Apart from creating another user account on my machine to test problems. I
usually store a copy of my recent preference list files in a separate location
on my machine. I don't need to know which ones these are by name -- all I need
to do is use the Finder Command-Shift-G "Go to folder" shortcut and type in:
~/Library/Preferences
Then in Finder's list view mode (Command-2) I'll sort on the "Date Modified"
column and pull off the most recent 100 files or so and copy them to another
location. Since plist files are small, this doesn't take up much room. And
the files that are frequently modified are the ones most likely to get
corrupted.

HTH. Maybe someone with access to the Lion recovery partition can give you
more suggestion about doing everything from the recovery partition, but I don't
think you need to reinstall or get sighted help to recover.

Cheers,

Esther

Hello everybody

It is traditional when new members join the Mac Access Dot Net email forum
that Gordon and I try to welcome the new member(s) personally. In keeping
with that tradition, we are delighted to welcome:

Yusuf, (No surname available)
and
Barry Hill
to our number. We are gratified by the fact that Mac Access is growing
globally. We hope that you will find Mac-Access@mac-access.net a pleasant,
friendly and worthwhile place to be.

In here you will find a wealth of knowledge, and people with a variety of
skill levels ranging from the total novice, to the application developers
with advanced skills. Then there are those who don't yet own a Mac, but
have a keen interest. We hope you will feel free to post your questions
and constructive comment, whatever your skill levels may be. Be assured,
there will be none of the ridiculing and flaming which we know takes place
in other groups. That kind of behaviour is not tolerated in Mac-Access.

Anything Mac OS and iOS is on topic for this group. In the case of
virtualisation applications such as Fusion and Parallels Desktop, the
configuration of the applications themselves, plus the configuration of
the virtual machines is on topic. However, the configuration of Windows or
any other operating systems within that virtual machine is off topic. The
exception to that is if you're using another instance of OSX within the
virtual machine. This has always been a bit of a grey area; but we hope
this clarifies the position.

If you have any list-related queries, please do not hesitate to contact
either Gordon and myself, (the list owners), at ,
or one of our very capable assistant list controllers; Anne Robertson,
 or James Austin, and
we will be happy to help you.

Once again, a very warm welcome to the group. We hope you find your
membership an enjoyable experience.

That's why the list exists; so feel free to ask questions and make comment. You
won't be ridiculed or flamed no matter how basic your questions may be, or
otherwise. This group is populated by people with more maturity than that. Once
again, welcome.

Thanks for the welcome, Lynn. I've not got a Mac yet, but I am a new
user of the Iphone and, as such, will be making use of the list for that.

Cheers

Barry

Subject: Double New Member Welcome

Then there are those who don't yet own a Mac, but have
a keen interest. We hope you will feel free to post your questions and
constructive comment, whatever your skill levels may be. Be assured, there
will be none of the ridiculing and flaming which we know takes place in
other groups. That kind of behaviour is not tolerated in Mac-Access.

Anything Mac OS and iOS is on topic for this group. In the case of
virtualisation applications such as Fusion and Parallels Desktop, the
configuration of the applications themselves, plus the configuration of the
virtual machines is on topic. However, the configuration of Windows or any
other operating systems within that virtual machine is off topic. The
exception to that is if you're using another instance of OSX within the
virtual machine. This has always been a bit of a grey area; but we hope this
clarifies the position.

If you have any list-related queries, please do not hesitate to contact
either Gordon and myself, (the list owners), at , or
one of our very capable assistant list controllers; Anne Robertson,
 or James Austin, and we
will be happy to help you.

Once again, a very warm welcome to the group. We hope you find your
membership an enjoyable experience.

Finally, I would like to add that currently, we are offering all Mac-Access.
members the opportunity to purchase the Take Control Of Your Mac
publications, published by Tidbits.com, at an 80% discount.

If you want to know more, please contact the above support address. For a
