Using the iPhone 4S without earphones_

2012-02-06 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello everyone,

Last Friday, I purchased an unlocked iPhone 4S with 64 GB of RAM, and I am
ecstatic. I am having one issue, however, and I'd really appreciate some
thoughts.

At present, I can only use VO with earphones. As soon as I remove the
earphones, I don't hear a thing. The only sounds that ever emanate from the
speakers are the tones that are sounded when the unit is plugged in to recharge
the battery.

Neither VO, nor apps that use audio can be heard without earphones. Is this
normal, or is this just my iPhone?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on how to rectify this problem,

Mike

Hello Mike, no it is your Iphone, this should not happen. I'm on my third
Iphone fours as the speaker went on my other two phones. It might be worth
getting a sighted person to check that the volume is on full when using
speakers. If it is on full and there is still no sound, go to apple and try and
get a replacement.

Re: iMac no longer plays start up music

2012-02-06 Thread Martin McCormick
If it is otherwise working fine, you might try hitting
the Volume up and or mute buttons at the top of the number pad
during the time it should be playing this chord to see if you
might have accidentally muted it or turned it down. At least on
some Mac versions such as the Mac Pro, Voiceover remembers
different audio settings for the startup sequence than it does
when it finishes starting up and you have your desktop.

If, for example, you had gotten the startup audio
somehow routed to the bluetooth device, muted or turned all the
way down, you might not hear anything at all until your desktop
starts.

One good thing is that it is almost surely a software
configuration issue since it is consistent.

I discovered this accidentally one day on a Mac Pro.
This particular Mac has a tiny internal speaker that plays the
startup music and any voiceover speech that occurs when the
system has no users actually logged in. It was too faint to
understand VO so I pressed the Volume Up key on the number pad
with the idea of turning it back down when the speakers came on.
The internal speaker got louder but this didn't change the
main speaker volume when it finished booting and the desktop came on.
The system remembers this new setting over reboots, power downs,
etc so if one were to turn it all the way down, you would still
have a working desktop with VO, but no startup music nor
Voiceover when it wasn't you that was logged in. Basically, each
mode of operation has its own sound profile that the Mac appears
to store in some non-volatile way such as a file it always saves
or maybe non-volatile memory, but it tries to remember how your
sound and Voiceover were set even after an upgrade.

So, when your Mac is booting or you were to log out of
your session, a different sound profile rules until you are back in
your desktop again.

Moving iTunes library to an external drive [was Re: Itunes question]

Hi Matthew,

You asked about moving your iTunes library to an external drive:

I wrote a reply to Jane's question about this last week, and was going to point
you to this, but a check of the archives showed that this post never made it to
the list, although there's a copy in my Inbox dated January 28 (go figure). So
I'll append this note along with apologies to Jane for the late reply.

The brief answer to your question, Matthew, is that in order to move your
iTunes library to an external drive, you have to update the information in the
iTunes database to point to the new location. You do this by first changing
the location for your iTunes Media Folder in the Advanced pane of your iTunes
Preferences. This only specifies where future additions to your iTunes library
will be written. To actually move your library to the external drive, you then
use the "Organize Library…" menu option under iTunes. This is outlined in more
detail in an iLounge article called " Transferring your iTunes Library
(November 30, 2011)":

In case that long link breaks, here's a shortened link to the same page:

Please read that article, because it explains a lot of the basic concepts about
how iTunes organizes your library. And to answer your question about how you
can tell where any track in your iTunes library is located, if you select a
track in the songs table and use the "Get Info" (Command-I) shortcut, the
summary tab will show you the path to the file.

There are also more details in my reply to Jane, pasted in and appended below
my signature.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Subject:Moving iTunes library to an external drive [was Re:
Working with external Drive]
Date: January 28, 2012
To: Mac OSX & iOS Accessibility

Hi Jane,

I've retitled your subject since the main question is about moving your iTunes
library to an external drive and using it there. The best descriptions I've
read of this process are the articles on the iLounge site. There's a recent
(end of November 2011) iLounge article titled, "Transferring your iTunes
Library" by Jesse Hollington that explains the process. I prefer to use their
mobile site, especially when I access these articles from an iPhone or iPad, so
that's the format I'm giving you in the link:
• Transferring your iTunes Library (November 30, 2011)

In case that long link breaks, here's a shortened link to the same page:

Otherwise, you can do a Google search on "ilounge transferring iTunes library",
and use Safari Reader (via the Command-Shift-R shortcut on your Mac) to avoid
the ads, additional graphics, etc. on their regular site.

To briefly summarize, iTunes maintains the information on where your music,
audiobooks, movies, etc. are located in a database file that is relatively
small, that you will continue to keep on your main computer, while you move the
contents files and folders from your iTunes Media folder to your external
drive. However, the correct way to do this is by using iTunes with the
"Organize Library…" option found as a submenu under the File menu's "Library"
menu option. The iLounge articles use embedded graphics to display the option
menus, so I'll describe the dialog menu that appears for the "Organize
Library…" option. It consists of two check box options, one for "Consolidate
files" that puts copies of all media files used by iTunes in the iTunes Media
Folder while leaving the original files in their current location. The second
check box option is for "Reorganize files" in the folder "iTunes music" that
creates files and folders within the iTunes Media Folder location specified in
the Advanced menu of your iTunes preferences, and places files that you
imported into iTunes into the correct folders in this location, while leaving
files that were not imported in their current locations.

The article does a good job of describing the various options you have for
moving your iTunes library files if you're upgrading your computer or, as in
your case, simply moving the library to an external hard drive. It also
describes the common wrong ways to try moving your iTunes files and the
misconceptions behind these ways.

In the case of moving iTunes content to an external hard drive, you're going to
first bring up your iTunes preferences menu with the Command+Comma shortcut,
and then navigate to the "Advanced menu" on the title bar. (I think yo

Hello Ian,

I am greatly relieved to report that the problem has been solved. Though your
diagnosis was incorrect, it got me to thinking, and I resolved the problem in a
pretty non-spectacular way.

First of all, I went to the Sounds entry in settings and determined that my
sound volume was at 100%. Then, I turned off the phone and waited for a minute
before powering it up again. No change.

Finally, while holding the volume up key, after unplugging the earphones, I
just started randomly touching the screen to make VO talk. All of a sudden, I
started hearing the speaker. This leads me to conclude that the external
speaker volume is independent from the earphone volume. Perhaps this will help
someone else, too.

Best regards, and thank you for indirectly helping me resolve the problem. :)

Adjusting VoiceOver speaker volume [was Re: Using the iPhone 4S without earphones_]

2012-02-06 Thread Esther
Hi Mike and Ian,

Mike responded before I could, but his statement is correct: the volume of
VoiceOver through the speaker and the volume for other audio sources playing
through the speaker are set separately on the iPhone. If it happens that for
some reason the volume for VoiceOver has dropped through the speakers, just
start VoiceOver speaking -- for example, by doing a two finger flick up to read
all the contents of the current screen -- and use the volume up controls at the
side of the iPhone to increase VoiceOver's volume through the speaker while
VoiceOver is speaking. You don't need to reset or turn off and then power up
your phone to do this. You simply need to make sure that VoiceOver is speaking
when you perform the volume up adjustments.

Re: Adjusting VoiceOver speaker volume [was Re: Using the iPhone 4Swithout earphones_]

2012-02-06 Thread Geoff Waaler
You'll find that the volume will randomly drop -- some times the change is
probably attributable to an inadvertent holding of the volume down key. Still,
I suspect there may be a bug somewhere. For example, when I pull my phone out
of a dock, the speaker volume may be all the way down.

If the remedy you discovered does not work, and no sound other than ringtones
is emitted from your speaker, there may be a dust particle caught in the
headphone jack. This would cause the microswitch to remain open and
consequently your hardware behaves as though headphones are connected
regardless. When this occurs, you can usually dislodge the obstruction by
inserting and withdrawing headphones into your jack about ten times quickly. A
vacuum or canned air would also do the trick. I have not yet experienced this
problem on my 4S, but assume the hardware is unchanged and hence that
possibility still exists, so its something to bare in mind.

  Best regards.
  Geoff

Re: iMac no longer plays start up music

2012-02-06 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Martin,
Yes you are dead right and your suggestion fixed the problem. I must have
accidentally muted the sound at startup and my iMac has remembered that ever
since. So just after pressing the start button I pressed the mute button which
would have unmuted sound and presto the startup chord returned. My iMac has now
remembered this so the startup chord now survives power off / power on.
Many thanks for the tip..
Best regards.

Greetings,

One Bible app that I have is called Youversion. It seems to be okay, but I'd
like something that would be a little easier to use. Nevertheless, it is
accessible and at least one blind person that I know of really loves it. It's
a question of personal taste, should think..

Kind regards,

Mike

Siri and Orthography

2012-02-06 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi,

Now that I have the iPhone 4S, I am starting to experiment with Siri. I was
wondering if there was a way to get Siri to use proper punctuation in
sentences. Is it possible, for example, to tell Siri to insert punctuation
marks in sentences? How can one get Siri to handle acronyms properly?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

2012-02-06 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Mike,
Punctuation is quite easy to use. Just say, for instance, "period," "comma,"
and the like.
Common acronyms are handled automatically based on usage, but I'm not sure
there's a definitive list anywhere. Less common ones might require some use of
the Siri capitalization commands. These can be found, among other places, in
any good book on using Siri. A Google search should also turn up this
information.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

Hello Ian,

I am greatly relieved to report that the problem has been solved. Though
your diagnosis was incorrect, it got me to thinking, and I resolved the
problem in a pretty non-spectacular way.

First of all, I went to the Sounds entry in settings and determined that my
sound volume was at 100%. Then, I turned off the phone and waited for a
minute before powering it up again. No change.

Finally, while holding the volume up key, after unplugging the earphones, I
just started randomly touching the screen to make VO talk. All of a sudden,
I started hearing the speaker. This leads me to conclude that the external
speaker volume is independent from the earphone volume. Perhaps this will
help someone else, too.

Best regards, and thank you for indirectly helping me resolve the problem.
:)

Re: Siri and Orthography

2012-02-06 Thread Esther
Hi Mike,

John Panarese's macfortheblind pages contains a couple of references that you
might like, including all the tips for how to use punctuation for Dragon
Dictation, that also apply to Siri. This is on the same page he keeps for
third party tips and tricks for iOS apps, so I do a Google search on
"macfortheblind prizmo tips" to find the link -- just because "prizmo" is
pretty uncommon. Here's the link to the page:

John has also put a .rtf file on "What can you say to Siri?" on his
documentation page:

However, if you're willing to spend $4.99, I'd recommend getting "Talking to
Siri" from the iBooks Store:
• "Talking to Siri: Learning the Language of Apple's Intelligent Assistant" by
Steve Sande and Erica Sadun
http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/talking-to-siri/id479419244?mt=11
This contains all the tips for dictation with punctuation, a discussion of what
you can say to SIri, suggestions for how to improve Siri's recognition of your
voice for dictation and commands (with some interesting tongue twisters to
practice with), It basically assembles the information you can find on the
internet in one place, with a detailed organization, and also discusses a few
items that aren't generally treated elsewhere -- like apps, such as MailShot
for group email messaging, that are designed to work with Siri. (This app is
accessible, by the way, and can be used on iOS devices that don't support Siri.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
