Re: Mud Client; please excuse my ignorance!

2012-05-14 Thread Thomas McMahan
So as they say, you all are computer poor huh? That's a few machines to
maintain then since people are dependent on them running, and folks can really
get cranked in a bad why when server systems go down.

We have 4 machines here, two are Macs one is the old Tiger machine we primarily
use the new i-mac here, my wife can see it a little better although the
computer usually doesn't interest her much anymore, perhaps when she recovers
more of her mind and memory she will get back into it again, and as a game
player she would put me to shame *lol*. Only she plays ones that aren't
accessible for me.

The other two are a windows laptop that is still usable, and an old windows
towner that will become a component of a server farm or a firewall one day,
don't think it's strong enough to upgrade anymore not without major replacement
of stuff.

The tiger machine officially belongs to my wife now, she always told me before
she got sick in 2009 that when we got new machine she wanted the tiger machine
as her's in total, so she gets that wish because she knows she can use this one
too since it's our's, but I still left my profile in that machine too so can
use it if she's on this one which some day will start happening more again I'm
sure.

Good luck to you guys on the current updating and revamping of the system.

Re: Mud Client; please excuse my ignorance!

2012-05-14 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello Thomas

There are currently 7 Mac Minis running various versions of OS X Server in this
building. Only 3 of them face the outside world. But their maintenance and
tweaking takes up a lot of Gordon's time. There is also one Mac Pro which
belongs to a commercial entity for whom we provide services related to their
network. That machine has 8 cores of processor power and 32GB of RAM. Yes, I
know; but we didn't pay for it. ;)

Gordon has the responsibility, helped to a degree by me, of keeping things
running smoothly and because Mac OS X is just so down right stable, it's a
pleasure rather than a bind to maintain them. He is hoping to overhaul our own
servers shortly which is going to create a lot of work in the short term. But
all things being equal, we should all get the benefit out of that; and I
include our various groups members in that statement.

I don't think it's likely in the foreseeable future that either of us will
develop an interest in playing computer games of any description. It's just not
something we're into. But as you rightly say there's nothing at all wrong with
those people who are into that side of things enjoying themselves with them. So
I wish you all as much fun as you can get out of your computers.

To us though, they are serious tools; with the exception of music, books and
movies.

unpack the zip file. Then you can copy the folder created to the USB device

I'll add (for the record) that I also do not charge anything more
than the books cost to purchase from the web site. This puts a crimp
in my own funds each time, because of paypal's policy of hogging it's
percentage, but everyone needs to make money somehow, so I don't
begrudge them their profit, nor do I pass this on to the purchasers,
since the whole point of working out the deal in the first place was
to help folks who could use the resource. So, anyone is welcome to
purchase directly from support at mac-access.net, or myself
(tsie...@softcon.com) and you will get the same books at the same
prices. With the added caveat that if you purchase through me, I do
not have the facilities to offer the downloadable bookshelf that
Gordon and Lynne maintain, so you will need to contact them to get
that setup after the transaction is complete.

So, thee you have it, hope it helps.

Re: Moving from Victor reader Stream to IPod.

2012-05-14 Thread Travis Siegel
I see they've not changed anything since I contacted them a year or
two ago about the same thing. I'd purchased a victor reader stream
for 50 bucks from a local store that happened to have it on the shelf
(they didn't know what it was) It didn't work, so I called, and was
told the same thing, since it's more than 2 versions old, they
couldn't fix it, but could sell me a new one for the aforementioned
$175. Needless to say, I declined the offer, and had fun taking it
apart to see what was wrong with it. Must have been a circuit board,
because I couldn't find anything at all broken on it. .
And, this is precisely why I refuse to purchase adaptive equipment at
the vastly inflated prices it's sold for, because when it breaks,
you're at the mercy of the company that made the silly thing, and
they often refuse to fix it.
So, I say, commercial products where possible, and Apple has done the
blind//vi market a tremendous favor making their products accessible,
because it means we can now use the same devices our sighted
acquaintenances use, and for no additional cost.
And, apple doesn't usually tell you they won't fix something because
it's more than 2 models out of date.
I don't know off hand what the name of it is, but there is a daisy
reading app for the ipod, a quick search of the app store should turn
up a few.
You should have no trouble importing your daisy books into your ipod
(come to think of it, I believe itunes has *some* daisy support,
though not to the degree you'd get with a dedicated reader.
I'd search for you, but my ipod is dead as a doornail at the moment,
and it takes it a while to realize it's plugged in and give me the
signal it's charging. :)

But, anyway, hope this helps anyway.

New Take Control Book Available Now!

2012-05-14 Thread Gordon, Lynne & Tracy
Hello everybody

We are just in the process of updating the bookshelves of those who our records
show bought the Take Control of your 802.11N Network title from us. This is a
free update for those on version 1.0 or 2.0. There's some good stuff in this
edition, so I urge you to come and get it from your bookshelves.

If you believe you bought this book and it isn't present in your bookshelf,
please show us the verification email if possible, and I will happily add it.
If you're interested in buying this book for the first time, by all means
contact us on the support address and I will make the necessary arrangements
with you.

I'm almost done adding it now to those bookshelves where I know it belongs. The
title is only available in PDF and ePub formats, as the publishers have not
released it in Mobi-Pocket format for whatever reason.

Lynne

Hi Tim,
I'd think it means you should consider taking the machine in to an Apple store
at some point soon, where heads wiser than mine will be able to tell you what
it means. :) More seriously, current MBP batteries aren't designed to be
serviced or replaced except by qualified people, so the store would be your
best bet.

Re: Mud Client; please excuse my ignorance!

2012-05-14 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hi Thomas

I wish we'd been in a position to play recently, LOL. I won't go into detail
but we do seem to do more work than play, that's true. Anyway to stay on topic;
Gordon is saying that to him, his work is play and visa versa. But yes; we do
love listening to music on our Mac, the odd audio book and the odd movie or two
each week.

That's where the Mac is so versatile. Those who love gaming have excellent
graphics, processing power, stability and lots more. Those who love work
likewise. Those who love entertainment media again have great flexibility. We
use Windows for two tasks only these days and not inside of a VM. We gave up on
virtualisation early last year and I now maintain it only for testing.

The Mac is king of the computer world; and iOS is king of mobile communications
and entertainment, in my humble opinion. I'm well aware that there is now some
competition to the mobile platforms, and each to their own. But having tried
Android a couple of times I reckon we'll be sticking with Apple for some
considerable time to come.

Yes, I'm not trying to preach or anything, as I said before it's to each their
own. I take the point about developers as well. It's just a purely personal
decision, end of story really. Computer games just don't interest us. That said

Gordon is a network administrator and server maintenance person. It's thanks to

Re: panes in ipad

2012-05-14 Thread Mary Otten
Hi William,

In the voiceover rotor, there is a setting called "containers". I must admit
that I've not found this setting as helpful as I thought it would be. When it
is selected, it lets you move among groups of objects in a program or, I think,
on a website, maybe not unlike group mode on the Mac, but I don't use group
mode that much, so I could be wrong about that last part. Flicking with one
finger up and down moves among the various containers, and those sometimes
correspond to panes. There are also popup windows that take getting use to. A
good example is the mail app, with its use of the popup and side bar, which I
honestly can't tell the difference between. In instances where there is a popup
or sidebar, you'll see a button you can double tap to dismiss that control.

Otherwise, in an app with panes that are not popups, you can just put your
finger into the other pane and it will get focus. A good example is the
settings app, which has the main categories down the left side of the IPad.
Double tap one and the list of categories remains on the left, but on the right
half of the screen, you see all the items related to the choice you just
selected on the left. This is actually kind of nice once you get use to it, as
it means less backing out of layered screens as with the IPhone or IPod touch.
But it definitely takes a little bit of getting use to.

Re: organising my aps on the ipad

2012-05-14 Thread Mary Otten
William,
If you mean you want to use ITunes to put certain apps on your IPad and not
others, then yes, you can do that as you described. However, if you mean that
you want to set up folders and the order of apps on the various pages, then no,
as a blind person, you can't do that. I've heard that sighted people can, but
we can't.

Hello Bill,
You should be able to use Text Edit without problems. It should be installed on

Another message which was sent to our sister group by Bill Deatherage

Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has downloaded books from Bards with the mack? I can
do it if I am putting the books on a SD card but if I want to put them on a
Thumb drive to play on the NLS player I have problems with setting up the
folders. After I download the book and want to copy it to the Thumb drive I
tried to create the folder. and name it so I can copy the book in its own
folder. how do I do this? Thanks in advance.
I am using an I Mac running Snow Leperd.

Hi William

I'm not surprised to hear you say that. We use Skim all the time as opposed to
Preview which has too many issues with more complex PDF documents for my
liking. You can, of course, get around a lot of them by changing your view
options but all in all, Skim is a better application I think.
