Why not suggest the dev switches voiceover on at their end and try to use
their app without looking at the screen or turning the screen off?
Then again it's a bit surprising they didn't think of that themselves!

Re: time machine and recovery issues

2012-07-10 Thread Travis Siegel

You don't have to reinstall your os just to remove a partition.
Use disk utility (it's in utilities under applications)
You can remove the partition there, just make sure it's the time
machine one and not the one you boot from, or you really will have to
reinstall.
After that's gone, you can create a new one, (or if disk utility
supports it) reexpand your existing partition to use the space left
blank by the removed partition.
Personally, I'd say leave it there, and just mount it somewhere on
your file system (maybe under applications or users) to remove your
applications data from your user data.
Or, install another copy of osx on it (perhaps snowleopard) so that
if lion gets hosed completely, you can still boot to something else
to fix it.
Of course, these are not applicable if you're not interested in doing
any of those things.
I tend to try to support maximum options, so my setup is not
generally a simple 1-partition configuration. *grin*

Anyway, hope this helps.

Help stopping a process in Activity Monitor

2012-07-10 Thread Eric Caron
Dear Listers,

I've noticed for some time that my Mac book has been running its fan
and also extra slow. On occasion I've checked Activity monitor and apparently
Missed something important. I found today a process called WD SmartwareD and
my CPU percentage is usually over %90! I remember seeing WD Smartware on my
Western Digital external drive. I have all hard disks except time Capsule
disconnected from the computer and yet this process is still going. Further,
when I go to the toolbar and select quit process I can't get it to stop. It
says I'll have to enter a administrative password but I don't see where to do
that. then the quit process button goes dim. In the meantime my CPU is still
working like crazy and the fan is working very hard.

How can I quit this process?

Listers,

I'm answering my own question for the archives and interested listers.
I called Apple and they could not help me end the WD Smartware D Process. They
sent me to Western Digitil. I then talked to Western Digital and they said
there was a known problem with WD Smartware and Lyon. He wanted me to
uninstall WD Smarware but he didn't know how to help me do that. Just tossing
it in the trash didn't help. Finally while on hold I found the uninstall
program buried in a folder called extras in the annoying WD Smartware
partition. I ran the uninstall and restarted my computer. My CPU is acting
normally again and my fan is off.

This does not make me feel confident in WD drives for my Mac!

Re: Help stopping a process in Activity Monitor

2012-07-10 Thread Esther
Hi Eric,

Thanks for reporting back, and I'm glad that you found a solution. A web
search turned up the fact that WD Smartware is an additional software program
that Western Digital distributes for backup. I've actually read reports where
this process ran wild on Windows systems, too, where people had detached the
external Western Digital drives and still had this process running at a high
fraction of their CPU.

I know that the early releases of Western Digital drives in the MyBook Live
series had an incompatibility with Time Machine that was fixed with a firmware
update. Here's the link to the article at 9to5 Mac:
• Western Digital fixes OS X Lion Time Machine incompatibilities with My Book
Live series, August 3, 2011
http://9to5mac.com/2011/08/03/western-digital-fixes-time-machine-incompatibilities-with-my-book-live-series/

I wasn't able to find details about how to stop the program running in my web
search, and I don't have this Western Digital drive to check. Congratulations
on finding your own solution! You don't need the WD Smartware program at all
if you are using other backup programs, such as Time Machine, SuperDuper! or
Carbon Copy Cloner, so you should be OK now. My guess is that this program
somehow triggered when you updated many music tracks with the iTunes Match
replacement. On some of the Windows machines where this program ran, it was
large amounts of Outlook mail updating that seemed to trigger it.

Glad to hear that everything is working for you again.

Best,

Esther

Re: audible app problems

2012-07-10 Thread Esther
Hi Glenn,

As Sean says, it would help to know whether you tried to download your Audible
book to your computer or to the Audible app on an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad.
And if you have downloaded a book to either your computer or to an iOS device,
what system or device you are using. My guess, based on your earlier posts, is
that you are using the Audible app on an iPhone 4.

First, can you check whether your device is close to full? I usually use apps
to report on my system status (there are also several free ones, like System
Status Lite by Techet, but you can find this information on disk usage in the
Settings > General > About screen.) As with all devices and computers,
downloading uses available cache storage, and you may get better performance
when you're not short on available disk space, or have cleared off active apps
in your AppSwitcher, or have cleared off multiple tabs in Safari or even gone
to Settings > Safari and used "Clear History". (Most of this is not necessary,
but are steps that you can take to minimize existing use of resources before
you download.)

Occasionally a file just doesn't download correctly. This can be due to heavy
server traffic at the time you tried to download, or the status of the
connection at that time with your ISP, etc. I've rarely had this happen with
Audible downloads now, and it's unlikely unless you try to get a newly
purchased file just after they've run a big sale. However, if this was a
problem download, you can delete the file and try again. (You can start
playing an app even when the download is incomplete, so the fact that you were
able to start listening doesn't indicate that the complete download was OK.)

To delete an audiobook from the Audible app:
1. Go to the book's playing screen. If you have selected "My Library" (the
first of 5 buttons at the bottom of the screen), there is probably a "Last
Played" button at the the top right corner of your screen. Double tap that.
2. On the screen with player controls at the bottom, there is an "Info" button
at the top right corner. Double tap that "Info" button.
3. The Info screen for the book has three buttons at the bottom: "Bookmarks",
"Details", and "Chapters". Double tap the middle "Details" button that is just
above the "Home" button.
4. Do a three finger scroll up to move to the bottom of the page, and find the
"Remove from device" button (just above the "Details" button, which itself is
just above the "Home" button at the bottom of the screen). Double tap this to
delete the book from your device.
5. You should be taken back to your library screen and the entry for the
downloaded book. Flick right to the "Download" button and try the download
again.

HTH. I've rarely had problems with my Audible downloads not completing. This
was an issue when they first released the app, and some of the downloads of
even short files would take 50 minutes to complete, but now my downloads
complete within a few minutes. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Sound Hound

2012-07-10 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings Diane,

I too am totally blind, but consider Soundhound to be very voiceover friendly.
There are a few unlabeled buttons, which in my experience don't preclude the
ability to fully exploit all features of interest to me.

I understand your frustration with the developers response (kind of analogous
to the 1980s vintage office sign reading: "the beatings will continue until
employee morale improves), but to be honest, I had the identical question upon
reading your post. Perhaps if I try a different approach?

1. Can you verify that you're using the current version of SoundHound?

2. Is it the free or paid version (this probably doesn't affect the interface)?

3. Are you using the current IOS public release (5.1.1)?

4. What happens when you launch SoundHound -- is all text unreadable, and you
see no discernible buttons?

5. If so, try using the "back" button in the upper left hand corner until
you're on the home screen where all buttons are clearly labeled without any
need for the "label element" ( two finger double tap and hold) gesture. If you
cannot locate a back button, try the scrub gesture which is supported
throughout the app).

One of the available settings is to have SoundHound listen for music on
startup, but for me, this screen is very clearly presented via VoiceOver. I
can't imagine where you might be landing.

Please let us know how you're getting on, and perhaps the list can be of more
help if we know a bit more about where you're getting stuck.

Best regards,
Geoff

Re: Sound Hound

2012-07-10 Thread Diane Bomar
Thanks, I am running ios 5.1.1, running the latest paid version of
soundhound (5.0.1, I think).
After searching for recognition of a song, several buttons come up. I can
read the lyrics, at the bottom of the page, and the back button, but not the
artist or song title. There are several buttons, at that point, and the next
level, that are just "button"
I would think that asking to have "all" elements labeled, would result in
the developer looking at the code to determine which elements do not have
text labels.

Thanks,
Diane

Greetings Diane,

I too am totally blind, but consider Soundhound to be very voiceover
friendly. There are a few unlabeled buttons, which in my experience don't
preclude the ability to fully exploit all features of interest to me.

I understand your frustration with the developers response (kind of
analogous to the 1980s vintage office sign reading: "the beatings will
continue until employee morale improves), but to be honest, I had the
identical question upon reading your post. Perhaps if I try a different
approach?

1. Can you verify that you're using the current version of SoundHound?

2. Is it the free or paid version (this probably doesn't affect the
interface)?

3. Are you using the current IOS public release (5.1.1)?

4. What happens when you launch SoundHound -- is all text unreadable, and
you see no discernible buttons?

5. If so, try using the "back" button in the upper left hand corner until
you're on the home screen where all buttons are clearly labeled without
any need for the "label element" ( two finger double tap and hold)
gesture. If you cannot locate a back button, try the scrub gesture which
is supported throughout the app).

One of the available settings is to have SoundHound listen for music on
startup, but for me, this screen is very clearly presented via VoiceOver.
I can't imagine where you might be landing.

Please let us know how you're getting on, and perhaps the list can be of
more help if we know a bit more about where you're getting stuck.

Best regards,
Geoff

Yes, that is what I suggested. Haven't heard back.

If it is like IText express, and if it is the same developer, I love IText
express and use it for my word processing needs.

Take care.

Re: Sound Hound

2012-07-10 Thread Geoff Waaler
Hi Diane,

On the results screen, I see three unlabeled buttons. one is directly below
the word "results" and a second is in that same row on the left hand side.
Lets call them UK1 and UK2 going left to right. Directly below UK2 is a button
labeled with the name of the artist.

Just from playing around in order to prepare my post, it would appear that the
button I named UK1 will play a preview, or if the song is already in your
library presents a choice between the standard preview, or your version. The
other two above and below the artist will display a review of the album
including it's contents. There are unlabeled buttons corresponding to every
song title which will play samples. Remember that you can use the
two-finger-double-tap-hold gesture to label elements, or relabel ones where you
don't like the name -- for example, in the SoundHound search result window, you
might want to change "control infopage save" to "save".

Bare in mind that we are a very small segment of the population, hence we often
have to meet developers half way. Most have never had cause to use VoiceOver,
so won't know what is meant by a badly labeled element, unless you can explain
where they are and how they vary from the nicely labeled ones. Just my two
cents.

Best regards.
Geoff
