You obviously misunderstood. :)

It isn't possible any longer to create an operating system DVD with Mountain
Lion. You need to create a thumb drive instead.

Re: iPhone calendar question

2012-08-02 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Sarah,
The month calendar view does indeed work as you describe. However my problem is
not "what events are happening on 10 August" but rather "I have a dentist
appointment sometime in mid August but cannot remember when". For this purpose
the list view is ideal if it would start at a sensible date like today.

I could use the search facility but entering "dentist" via the virtual keyboard
is a bit tricky.

I suppose I could request my iMac to automatically delete all events older than
say 7 days (on Lion it was set to delete all events older than 30 days).
However I cannot find this automatic delete option on Mountain Lion. Does
anyone know where it is? It used to be under the advanced tab on Lion.

Best regards

Using an iPad 2 - really new to this

2012-08-02 Thread Mary Stores

Hello, everyone.

I am using an iPad 2 from work. I have the iPad users guide installed,
and it seems you would have to be a pretty good navigator just to read
it. Even when I find what I'm looking for in the table of contents, it
doesn't read it right away. Does anyone have suggestions how to make
this happen? I am sure I don't know all the gestures.

I do have multiple disabilities. Typing is a very frustrating
experience for me. Even when I find a letter, it's hard to keep my
finger still enough to tap the key I want to type without accidently
finding another key. I am hoping the tactile covers sold by the A T
guys might help me with this, but if any of you have any suggestions
for me regarding this, I would be open to trying them.

I will be practing a lot. I even find it hard to swipe in a straight
line, but as time goes by, I am improving in that area.

Thanks,

Mary

Re: can not burn ml

2012-08-02 Thread Sarah Alawami
According th the life hacker article I sent, or I hope I sent, Internet is
flaky at my location, you will need a dool layer DVD to accomplish this. It's
probaly easier and fastrr to burn it to a flash drive anyways as DVD is slower,
way slower then the flash drive by about a few minutes. At least for me lol!

Use lion disk maker that was linked in th elife hacker article I liked to a few
days ago. I'm not home so can't resend the link and safari book marks righ tnow
are beein a pain in my back side.

Tc all.

Hi to help with the typing!
You can keep your finger on the pad and when you get to the letter you wish to
type just tap with another finger either on the same hand or the other!
Also you can change to touch type!
When on the edit field use the rota to select typing flick up to touch then
change the rota back to words or something!
Then as before you can just put your finger on the pad but this time when you
get to the letter you need just lift your finger and it will be typed!

Re: Using an iPad 2 - really new to this

2012-08-02 Thread Esther
Hello Mary,

Welcome to the list. Is this your first experience with a touch screen device?
You might find it easier to read the iPad User's Guide on the web browser of
your computer, first. You can find a copy at:
http://help.apple.com/ipad/5/voiceover/en/
You can review the sections under Accessibility, and particularly under
VoiceOver. I'll give you the direct link to the section on VoiceOver gestures:
http://help.apple.com/ipad/5/voiceover/en/iPad74ec1238.html

One of the gestures that I found very useful when I got started with iOS
devices is the two finger flick up to "read all" or the two finger flick down
to "read all" starting from the present position. Then you can do a two finger
tap on the screen to pause the reading and another two finger tap to resume it.
If you go past the control that you want, you can simply pause the reading
with a two finger tap and then flick left to move back a step or flick right to
move forward. When focus is on a control, simply double tap any where on the
screen to activate it. You can also move focus to any control by simply
touching it on the screen. So on the iPad, in applications like Settings or
Mail, where there are general categories on the left side of the screen, and
specific items on the right side of the screen, if you have difficulty
navigating between the two sets of controls, simply touch the screen on that
side. This will save you from having to either listen to all the Sett
ings or Mailboxes on the left side before getting to the right side items if
you haven't mastered rotor gestures to move by containers.

Are you holding your iPad in landscape mode (home button to the left or right)
or portrait mode (home button at the bottom center)? (VoiceOver will announce
which you are using if you change modes.)

The other recommendation is to review your VoiceOver gestures using the
VoiceOver Practice Gestures section of the Settings screen.
1. From the main home screen, locate "Settings" and activate it with a double
tap. (You can do a two finger flick up to read the whole screen, then pause
the reading with a two finger tap. If you've gone past "Settings", flick left
until you get back to it and double tap to open.)
2. Under "Settings" do a two finger flick up and stop the reading at "General"
with a two finger tap, Then double tap to select it
3. Use a four finger tap anywhere on the bottom half of the screen to go to the
last element on the screen. Keep your finger separated when you tap VoiceOver
should say "Reset button". If you flick left from this point you'll hear
"Accessibility button". If you don't get results from that gesture, then just
touch near the bottom of the right half of the screen and do a two finger flick
down, stopping with a two finger tap when you hear "Accessibility". Then double
tap.
4. VoiceOver should say "Settings, Vision heading". Flick right once to the
"VoiceOver on button" and double tap.
5. VoiceOver should say "Settings VoiceOver on". Flick right through the
information "VoiceOver speaks items on the screen. To select an item Touch it.
To activate the selected item Double-tap. To scroll Flick three fingers." to
"VoiceOver Practice button" and double tap.
6. VoiceOver should say "VoiceOver Practice heading". Flick right twice to
navigate past the "Done" button in the top right corner to the "Practice
VoiceOver gestures" area.
7. In this area you can perform gestures and have VoiceOver identify the
gesture you made and tell you what it does. For example a tap on the screen
will prompt VoiceOver to say "Touch, select item under your finger". A two
finger flick will elicit "Two finger flick up, read page starting at the top".
8. When you are finished practicing, double tap the "Done" button in the top
right corner of the screen. You can reach this button by moving your finger
vertically up the page until you reach the "VoiceOver Practice heading" at the
top, then flick right to the "Done button" and double tap.
9. To return to the home screen, click the "Home" button (at the bottom center
when you hold the iPad in Portrait mode).

HTH. As a general comment, most people use too much energy when they first
start swiping and tapping on the touch screen. The touch is a very light flick,
as though you were trying to brush off a gnat that landed on your arm. Use
enough pressure so your finger doesn't shake, but not so much that you feel
fatigued after a short session. If you have problems swiping in a straight
line horizontally, you can rotate your iPad 90 degrees and try the gesture as a
vertical swipe, where it's probably easier to get this "straight". But using
the practice gestures area helps a lot, because VoiceOver will tell you the
gesture it thinks you made without executing anything. Good luck. Write back
if you have more questions

Cheers,

Esther

Hi Paul
This may help with your origimal question. have you tried using the list tab
which just lists all your events down the centre of the screen? So you can
swipe right to hear each one read out, or just Drag a finger down the screen
and you will hear the word you're looking for.
Hope this helps.

view to display my calendar as that enables me to quickly see forthcoming
events. I use iCloud to sync with my iMac calendar on Mountain Lion. I
have my iMac calendar options set to delete appointments older than 30
 days.

My question is how can I display the Calendar list view starting at
today's date? This occasionaly happens automatically when I open the
calendar app on my iPhone but usually the calendar list view starts 30
days ago which makes it tricky to view events for today and the following
 few days.

I see that there is a button at the bottom of the calendar display titled
"today" which I hoped would rest the list vview to start at today;today's
date. Alas that button does not usually do anything.

Any thoughts? I would rather not have my iMac automatically delete events
older than 30 days but that is the only way to get my iPhone calendar list
 view tolerable.

 Many thanks.

 Paul Hopewell

Re: Using an iPad 2 - really new to this

2012-08-02 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Mary

First suggestion would be to help you with typing. In the "Rotor", you need to
change the typing mode to "Touch Type". That would do away withy the need to
"double-tap" to enter a letter. As soon as your finger is on the letter you
want, just lift your finger off the screen slightly and it is entered.

I think you need a Braille or tactile screen cover. They are available I
think, although I don't know where you can buy them in the US. But that rotor
change would be an essential for you I think.

Hello, everyone.

away. Does anyone have suggestions how to make this happen? I am sure I don't
know all the gestures.

I do have multiple disabilities. Typing is a very frustrating experience for
me. Even when I find a letter, it's hard to keep my finger still enough to tap
the key I want to type without accidently finding another key. I am hoping the
tactile covers sold by the A T guys might help me with this, but if any of you
have any suggestions for me regarding this, I would be open to trying them.

I will be practing a lot. I even find it hard to swipe in a straight line, but
as time goes by, I am improving in that area.

OK, if I understand this correctly, Sarah is advocating the use of a dual-layer
DVD. Guess what folks, I suggested that from day one. :)

Although actually, it may be that even that doesn't work. I tried it and got
errors. I think the image has to be the right size, although I could be wrong
on that score. All the same, just buy yourself a thumb drive, you'll find

Are you talking about a USB thumb drive or a SD card? I would presume the
former. If you use the recovery tool, you'll have no trouble. I think this
one is just one instance where people sometimes make it more difficult for
themselves, purely unintentionally, of course. :)

But yes, by thumb drive we mean a USB thumb drive, not a hard drive.

A thumb drive is a little USB stick, about the length of your thumb (hence the

DVDRemaster 8 currently on sale at the Mac App Store for a limited time

2012-08-02 Thread Esther
Hi All,

In celebration of the new version 8 release of DVDRemaster Pro, the developer
has put this app on sale at the Mac App Store for $9.99 for a limited time,
reduced from its usual price of $49.99. This application allows you to extract
audio or video tracks from DVDs and also to recompress large DVS so they can be
burned on standard DVDs, or convert them for watching on iOS devices or Apple
TVs. I should add that Gordon worked with the developer to improve the
accessibility of this application. You can get comments from other list
members who have used this program extensively. I think you can also get a
trial download of the software from Metakine's web site at:
http://www.metakine.com/products/dvdremaster/

The URL for DVDRemaster 8 at the Mac App Store is:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dvdremaster-8/id527609547?mt=12

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Burning ML to SD card.

Hi Geoff and Others,

Here's the link to Dan Frakes' Macworld article, "How to make a bootable
Mountain Lion install drive". (Use Safari reader with Command-Shift-R to read
the article):
http://www.macworld.com/article/1167857/how_to_make_a_bootable_mountain_lion_install_drive.html

I don't think method 1 with disk utility is accessible, but method 2 using
Carbon Copy Cloner should be. (And even though CCC is now $39.99 or $29.99
through till August 12, you can still download it as a fully functioning free
trial). Interestingly, in the comments the author said, "SuperDuper will work
for cloning a hard drive, but it's not the right tool for making a bootable
install drive. The three tools mentioned i nthe article are your best choices."

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: New iMac user with wi-fi/bluetooth problems

2012-08-02 Thread Esther
Hi Phil,

Can you describe what you're using for your Wi-Fi network? What model server,
and protocol? (8.0211N or G, WPA or WEP encryptions, etc.)? I don't have an
iMac, and probably someone else will be able to answer this, but that's the
kind of information that will help to troubleshoot.

I did read earlier in the year that some iMac users had a problem with an
AirPort update (Apple's wireless network software) that produced the symptoms
you described. In some cases using the power button instead of pressing a key
to wake from sleep (not reboot) worked for some people.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

ML issues.

2012-08-02 Thread Danny Noonan
Ok, I'm getting the feeling my drag & drop mail box issues in Mail are just 1
symptom of some system wide instability. I'm getting lots of apps crashing like
the SendSpace wizard, whilst reading the Ars Technica MountainLion review which
was on aprox 22 pages, at least 15 times, Voiceover turned off and then
straight back on again. About 1 out of every 15 pages, clicking on a link, I
get strange alpha numeric heading and link names and no text but quoting and
restarting bring it back to normal. In Mail, often I can't do a right arrow to
open conversation threads and yes, QuickNav is off. and I am interacting with
the message list. And last night, trying to tidy up my file & folder structure,
half the time I tried to drag and drop across windows, I got an item no longer
available and this could be an overlapping window issue, i don't know enough
yet about the 2d layout structure and inherent issues as of yet but they were
both windows within finder. Also, when doing a command
c to copy and then an option command v to move paste, it pasted copies of the
documents rather than moving them.

I don't know of any settings I could have inadvertently set that could cause
things like this but I really hope that's the issue as that would be
resolvable. I did notice that finder was set to not open folders in new windows
and I never changed that setting although the upgrade to Mountainlion certainly
could have. It did change my tabs in separate folders setting in safari after
all.

Anyway, I don't know if there's a way to role back an entire system like there
is in windows so I can oral the os back to before these issues started a few
days ago. I have a full Time Machine backup on an external so any suggestions
or even just kemeserations would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks to all.
